This work presents a comparative analysis about the behaviour of pile caps supported by 3 piles subjected to axial loading. Piles with 20 cm and 30 cm diameters were analysed. The main reinforcement was maintained in all the specimens, however, the arrangement of the secondary reinforcement varied. The main reinforcement consisted of steel bars connecting the piles. The secondary reinforcement was made up of: (a) bars going through the piles and through the projection of the column, (b) bars forming a network, and (c) vertical and horizontal stirrups. The main objective was the observation of the pile cap behaviour regarding the cracks and the modes of rupture. The real scale specimens were subjected to experimental tests until failure by rupture. Instruments were placed with the aim to obtain the displacement of the bases, the strains in the main and secondary reinforcement bars, in the compression struts, in the lower and upper nodal zones and in the sides of the caps. None of the caps reached failure by rupture with a load less than 1.12 times the theoretical load. The specimens ruptured due to the cracking of the compression strut and/or the yielding of the reinforcement bars in one direction.

This paper deals with the numerical assessment of the influence of parameters such as pre-compression level, aspect ratio, vertical and horizontal reinforcement ratios and boundary conditions on the lateral strength of masonry walls under in-plane loading. The numerical study is performed through the software DIANA (R) based on the Finite Element Method. The validation of the numerical model is carried out from a database of available experimental results on masonry walls tested under cyclic lateral loading. Numerical results revealed that boundary conditions play a central role on the lateral behavior of masonry walls under in-plane loading and determine the influence of level of pre-compression as well as the reinforcement ratio on the wall strength. The lateral capacity of walls decreases with the increase of aspect ratio and with the decrease of pre-compression. Vertical steel bars appear to have almost no influence in the shear strength of masonry walls and horizontal reinforcement only increases the lateral strength of masonry walls if the shear response of the walls is determinant for failure, which is directly related to the boundary conditions. The aim of this work was to investigate the effect of different feeding times (2, 4, and 6 h) and organic loading rates (3, 6 and 12 gCOD l(-1) day(-1)) on the performance of an anaerobic sequencing batch reactor containing immobilized biomass, as well as to verify the minimum amount of alkalinity that can be added to the influent. The reactor, in which mixing was achieved by recirculation of the liquid phase, was maintained at 30 +/- 1A degrees C, possessed 2.5 l reactional volume and treated 1.5 l cheese whey in 8-h cycles. Results showed that the effect of feeding time on reactor performance was more pronounced at higher values of organic loading rates (OLR). During operation at an OLR of 3 gCOD l(-1) day(-1), change in feeding time did not affect efficiency of organic matter removal from the reactor. At an OLR of 6 gCOD l(-1) day(-1), reactor efficiency improved in relation to the lower loading rate and tended to drop at longer feeding times. At an OLR of 12 gCOD l(-1) day(-1) the reactor showed to depend more on feeding time; higher feeding times resulted in a decrease in reactor efficiency. Under all conditions shock loads of 24 gCOD l(-1) day(-1) caused an increase in acids concentration in the effluent. However, despite this increase, the reactor regained stability readily and alkalinity supplied to the influent showed to be sufficient to maintain pH close to neutral during operation. Regardless of applied OLR, operation with feeding time of 2 h was which provided improved stability and rendered the process less susceptible to shock loads.

An investigation was performed on the effect of temperature and organic load on the stability and efficiency of a 1.8-L fluidized-bed anaerobic sequencing batch reactor (ASBR), containing granulated biomass. Assays were carried out employing superficial up How velocity of 7 m/h, total cycle length of 6 h and synthetic wastewater volume of 1.3 L per cycle. The fluidized-bed ASH was operated at 15, 20, 25 and 30 degrees C with influent organic matter concentrations of 500 and 1000 mgCOD/L The system showed stability under all conditions and presented filtered samples removal efficiency ranging from 79 to 86%. A first-order kinetic model could be fitted to the experimental values of the organic matter concentration profiles. The specific kinetic parameter values of this model ranged from 0.0435 to 0.2360 L/(gTVS h) at the implemented operation conditions. in addition, from the slope of an Arrhenius plot, the activation energy values were calculated to be 16,729 and 12,673 cal/mol for operation with 500 and 1000 mgCOD/L, respectively. These results show that treatment of synthetic wastewater. with concentration of 500 mgCOD/L, was more sensitive to temperature variations than treatment of the same residue with concentration of 1000 mgCOD/L. Comparing the activation energy value for operation at 500 mgCOD/L with the value obtained by Agibert et al. (S.A. Agibert, M.B. Moreira, S.M. Ratusznei, J.A.D. Rodrigues, M. Zaiat, E. Foresti. Influence of temperature on performance of an ASBBR with circulation applied to treatment of low-strength wastewater. journal of Applied Biochemistry and Biotechnology, 136 (2007) 193-206) in an ASBBR treating the same wastewater at the same concentration, the value obtained in the fluidized-bed ASBR showed to be superior, indicating that treatment of synthetic wastewater in a reactor containing granulated biomass was more sensitive to temperature variations than the treatment using immobilized biomass. This paper presents a technological viability study of wastewater treatment in an automobile industry by an anaerobic sequencing batch biofilm reactor containing immobilized biomass (AnSBBR) with a draft tube. The reactor was operated in 8-h cycles, with agitation of 400 rpm, at 30 degrees C and treating 2.0 L wastewater per cycle. Initially the efficiency and stability of the reactor were studied when supplied with nutrients and alkalinity. Removal efficiency of 88% was obtained at volumetric loading rate (VLR) of 3.09 mg COD/L day. When VLR was increased to 6.19 mg COD/L day the system presented stable operation with reduction in efficiency of 71%. In a second stage the AnSBBR was operated treating wastewater in natura, i.e., without nutrients supplementation, only with alkalinity, thereby changing feed strategy. The first strategy consisted in feeding 2.0 L batch wise (10 min), the second in feeding 1.0 L of influent batch wise (10 min) and an additional 1.0 L fed-batch wise (4 h), both dewatering 2.0 L of the effluent in 10 min. The third one maintained 1.0 L of treated effluent in the reactor, without discharging, and 1.0 L of influent was fed fed-batch wise (4 h) with dewatering 1.0 L of the effluent in 10 min. For all implemented strategies (VLR of 1.40, 2.57 and 2.61 mg COD/L day) the system presented stability and removal efficiency of approximately 80%. These results show that the AnSBBR presents operational flexibility, as the influent can be fed according to industry availability. In industrial processes this is a considerable advantage, as the influent may be prone to variations. Moreover, for all the investigated conditions the kinetic parameters were obtained from fitting a first-order model to the profiles of organic matter, total volatile acids and methane concentrations. Analysis of the kinetic parameters showed that the best strategy is feeding 1.0 L of influent batchwise (10 min) and 1.0 L fed-batch wise (4 h) in 8-h cycle. (c) 2007 Elsevier B.V. Reconciliation can be divided into stages, each stage representing the performance of a mining operation, such as: long-term estimation, short-term estimation, planning, mining and mineral processing. The gold industry includes another stage which is the budget, when the company informs the financial market of its annual production forecast. The division of reconciliation into stages increases the reliability of the annual budget informed by the mining companies, while also detecting and correcting the critical steps responsible for the overall estimation error by the optimization of sampling protocols and equipment. This paper develops and validates a new reconciliation model for the gold industry, which is based on correct sampling practices and the subdivision of reconciliation into stages, aiming for better grade estimates and more efficient control of the mining industry`s processes, from resource estimation to final production.

This work presents a comparison between laser weld (LBW) and electric resistance spot weld (ERSW) processes used for assemblies of components in a body-in-white (BIW) at a world class automotive industry. It is carried out by evaluating the mechanical strength modeled both by experimental and numerical methods. An ""Arcan"" multiaxial test was designed and manufactured in order to enable 0 degrees, 45 degrees and 90 degrees directional loadings. The welded specimens were uncoated low carbon steel sheets (S-y = 170 MPa) used currently at the automotive industry, with two different thicknesses: 0.80 and 1.20 mm. The time varying intensity character of a load applied to a structure poses many difficulties in analysis. A remedy to this situation is to substitute a complex pulse shape by a rectangular equivalent one. It has been shown by others that this procedure works well for perfectly plastic elementary structures. This paper applies the concept of equivalent pulse to more complex structures. Special attention is given to the material behavior, which is allowed to be strain rate and strain hardening sensitive. Thanks to the explicit finite element solution, it is shown in this article that blast loads applied to complex structures made of real materials can be substituted by equivalent rectangular loads with both responses being practically the same. We present the temperature dependence of piezooptical coefficients for three samples of TeO(2)-GeO(2)-PbO glasses doped with 0.5% of Eu(2)O(3), 0.5% and 1% of Au(2)O(3), after different thermoannealing times. We have established that there exist two temperatures singularities - minima in the range 655-695 K and maxima - at 850 K. It is crucial that for the glasses annealed during 61 h, at temperatures about 850 K, the anomaly of piezooptical coefficient disappears. Simultaneously the minima within the range 655-695 K changed depending on the duration of the thermoannealing which leads to low temperature shift of the minima. Towards lower temperature the piezooptical maxima occurs around 850 K and disappears after the increase of the annealing time. It is also crucial that the values of the piezooptical coefficients decrease with the enhancement of the thermoannealing. The observed temperature dependence with the piezooptical coefficients has a good correlation with the temperature dependences of the DSC. We have found that the pure glasses and glasses doped only by Au(2)O(3) and Eu(2)O(3) possess the piezooptical coefficients one order less with respect to the samples possessing simultaneously Au(2)O(3) and Eu(2)O(3). Luminescence properties of Eu3+ doped TeO2-PbO-GeO2 glasses containing gold nanoparticles (NPs) were investigated. The emission spectra of the samples exhibited enhancement of Eu3+ luminescence due to the presence of gold NPs. The emission at 614 nm. due to the Eu3+ hypersensitive transition D-5(0)-F-7(2), is much influenced by the gold NPs and increases by approximate to 100%. for samples heat-treated at 350 degrees C during 41 h. In the present work we report the characterization of PbO-GeO(2) films containing silver nanoparticles (NPs). Radio Frequency (RF) co-sputtering was used for deposition of amorphous films on glass substrates. Targets of 60PbO-40GeO(2) (in wt%) and bulk silver with purity of 99.99% were RF-sputtered using 3.5 m Torr of argon. The concentration of silver and gold NPs in the films was controlled varying the RF-power applied to the targets (40-50W for the PbO-GeO(2) target; 6-8 W for the metallic target). The films obtained were annealed in air at different temperatures and various periods of time. Absorption measurements have shown strong NPs surface plasmon bands. Different widths and peak wavelengths were observed, indicating that size, shape and distribution of the silver NPs are dependent on the deposition process parameters and on the annealing of the samples. We have found photoinduced second harmonic generation at wavelength 1064 nm during bicolor Nd:YAG laser coherent treatment of TeO(2)-ZnO and GeO(2)-PbO amorphous films. The maximally achieved second order susceptibility was equal to about 1.02 pm/V. Correlation of the induced second order susceptibility with local sample heating and induced birefringence may indicate an occurrence of local phase transitions from amorphous glass-like phase to non-centrosymmetry metastable phases. This work investigates the formation of self-assembled monolayers (SAMs) of cystamine and cystamine-glutaraldehyde on a screen-printed electrode, and the immobilization of the Tc85 protein (from Trypanosoma cruzi) on these monolayers. The methods used included infrared techniques, cyclic voltammetry, and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy. The electrochemical studies were performed at pH 6.9 in 0.1 mol L(-1) phosphate buffer solution containing Fe(CN)(6)(-3/-4) redox species. The surface coverage (0) of the electrode was 0.10 (cystamine), 0.35 (cystamine-glutaraldehyde) and 0.84 (Tc85). Interpretation of electrochemical impedance spectroscopy results was based on a charge-transfer reaction involving Fe(CN)(6)(-3/-4) species at high frequencies, followed by a diffusion through the monolayers at lower frequencies. Estimates of the electrode surface coverage, active site radius, and distance between two adjacent sites assumed that charge transfer occurred at the active sites, and that there was a planar diffusion of redox species to these sites. Monoclonal antibodies (MAb) have been commonly applied to measure LDL in vivo and to characterize modifications of the lipids and apoprotein of the LDL particles. The electronegative low density lipoprotein (LDL(-)) has an apolipoprotein B-100 modified at oxidized events in vivo. In this work, a novel LDL-electrochemical biosensor was developed by adsorption of anti-LDL(-) MAb on an (polyvinyl formal)-gold nanoparticles (PVF-AuNPs)-modified gold electrode. Electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) and cyclic voltammetry (CV) were used to characterize the recognition of LDL-. The interaction between MAb-LDL(-) leads to a blockage in the electron transfer of the [Fe(CN)(6)](4-)/K(4)[Fe(CN)(6)](3-) redox couple, which may could result in high change in the electron transfer resistance (R(CT)) and decrease in the amperometric responses in CV analysis. The compact antibody-antigen complex introduces the insulating layer on the assembled surface, which increases the diameter of the semicircle, resulting in a high R(CT), and the charge transferring rate constant k(0) decreases from 18.2 x 10(-6) m/s to 4.6 x 10(-6) m/s. Our results suggest that the interaction between MAb and lipoprotein can be quantitatively assessed by the modified electrode. The PVF-AuNPs-MAb system exhibited a sensitive response to LDL(-), which could be used as a biosensor to quantify plasmatic levels of LDL(-). (C) 2011 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

This experiment investigated whether the stability of rhythmic unimanual movements is primarily a function of perceptual/spatial orientation or neuro-mechanical in nature. Eight participants performed rhythmic flexion and extension movements of the left wrist for 30 s at a frequency of 2.25 Hz paced by an auditory metronome. Each participant performed 8 flex-on-the-beat trials and 8 extend-on-the-beat trials in one of two load conditions, loaded and unload. In the loaded condition, a servo-controlled torque motor was used to apply a small viscous load that resisted the flexion phase of the movement only. Both the amplitude and frequency of the movement generated in the loaded and unloaded conditions were statistically equivalent. However, in the loaded condition movements in which participants were required to flex-on-the-beat became less stable (more variable) while extend-on-the-beat movements remained unchanged compared with the unload condition. The small alteration in required muscle force was sufficient to result in reliable changes in movement stability even a situation where the movement kinematics were identical. These findings support the notion that muscular constraints, independent of spatial dependencies, can be sufficiently strong to reliably influence coordination in a simple unimanual task.
