MAST: multi-script annotation toolkit for scenic text

This paper describes a semi-automatic tool for annotation of multi-script text from natural scene images. To our knowledge, this is the maiden tool that deals with multi-script text or arbitrary orientation. The procedure involves manual seed selection followed by a region growing process to segment each word present in the image. The threshold for region growing can be varied by the user so as to ensure pixel-accurate character segmentation. The text present in the image is tagged word-by-word. A virtual keyboard interface has also been designed for entering the ground truth in ten Indic scripts, besides English. The keyboard interface can easily be generated for any script, thereby expanding the scope of the toolkit. Optionally, each segmented word can further be labeled into its constituent characters/symbols. Polygonal masks are used to split or merge the segmented words into valid characters/symbols. The ground truth is represented by a pixel-level segmented image and a '.txt' file that contains information about the number of words in the image, word bounding boxes, script and ground truth Unicode. The toolkit, developed using MATLAB, can be used to generate ground truth and annotation for any generic document image. Thus, it is useful for researchers in the document image processing community for evaluating the performance of document analysis and recognition techniques. Essex ACL - Broadening horizons with blended learning - technology toolkit for foreign language tutors

As part of an LSIS Regional Response Fund project, Essex Adult Community Learning (ACL) has created a toolkit. The toolkit provides training for foreign language tutors in producing digital resources which combine audio, video, text and communication activities. The toolkit which is now an integral part of a blended learning language course, has also developed tutors' skills in using technology for teaching and learning. The main aim has also been to provide an alternative and flexible method of delivery, especially where funding cuts have impacted on the cost of running taught courses.

Otley College: An Online toolkit for tutorials in rural- based FE – meeting new funding needs

As part of an LSIS Regional Response Fund project, Otley College has developed an online toolkit for one-to-one tutorials, based on research undertaken with practitioners and learners. The toolkit has been developed to meet the needs of students and tutors, and attempts to fulfil the requirement for tutorials within a new straightened funding agreement.

Expanding the Toolkit for Synthetic Biology: Frameworks for Native-like Non-natural Gene Circuits

Synthetic biology combines biological parts from different sources in order to engineer non-native, functional systems. While there is a lot of potential for synthetic biology to revolutionize processes, such as the production of pharmaceuticals, engineering synthetic systems has been challenging. It is oftentimes necessary to explore a large design space to balance the levels of interacting components in the circuit. There are also times where it is desirable to incorporate enzymes that have non-biological functions into a synthetic circuit. Tuning the levels of different components, however, is often restricted to a fixed operating point, and this makes synthetic systems sensitive to changes in the environment. Natural systems are able to respond dynamically to a changing environment by obtaining information relevant to the function of the circuit. This work addresses these problems by establishing frameworks and mechanisms that allow synthetic circuits to communicate with the environment, maintain fixed ratios between components, and potentially add new parts that are outside the realm of current biological function. These frameworks provide a way for synthetic circuits to behave more like natural circuits by enabling a dynamic response, and provide a systematic and rational way to search design space to an experimentally tractable size where likely solutions exist. We hope that the contributions described below will aid in allowing synthetic biology to realize its potential.

Towards a modular toolkit for strategic technology management

Many strategic technology management methods and tools have been proposed and deployed by academics and practitioners. Each approach, with its advantages and disadvantages, provides a particular perspective for supporting understanding, analysis, decision and action. Many approaches overlap in function, the interfaces with other methods are not clear, and many variants of tools are often available with little guidance provided for their application. As a step towards the construction of a flexible toolkit for supporting strategic technology management, this paper sets out a workshop-based approach that comprises functional modules that can be combined to address a range of management challenges. 对闪烁光在晶体内的传输以及光电子倍增过程进行了建模,基于GEANT4软件包对CsI(T1)闪烁体探测器进行了蒙特卡罗模拟,得到了不同形状、尺寸和包装的CsI(Tl)晶体测量γ射线的能谱。对比模拟和测试结果,两者得到了很好的符合,从而验证了模拟参数的合理性和可靠性。该模拟程序的建立为闪烁体探测器的设计提供了更精确的开发工具。

The Application of Toolkit of Optimization in Designs of Accelerator Magnets

The traditional design of accelerator magnet usually involves many time consuming iterations of the manual analysis process. A software platform to do these iterations automatically is proposed in this paper. In this platform, we use DAKOTA (a open source software developed by Sandia National Laboratories) as the optimizing routine, which provides a variety of optimization methods and algorithms, and OPERA (software from Vector Fields) is selected as the electromagnetic simulating routine. In this paper, two examples of designs of accelerator magnets are used to illustrate how an optimization algorithm is chosen and the platform works.
