Y2O3:Eu3+ nanocrystals were prepared by combustion synthesis. The particle size estimated by X-ray powder diffraction (XRD) was about 10 nm. A blue-shift of the charge-transfer (CT) band in excitation spectra was observed in Y2O3:Eu3+ nanocrystals compared with bulk Y2O3:Eu3+. The electronic structure Of Y2O3 is calculated by density functional method and exchange and correlation have been treated by the generalized gradient approximation (GGA) within the scheme due to Perdew-Burke-Ernzerhof (PBE). The calculated results show that the energy centroid of 5d orbital in nanocrystal has increasing trend compared with that in the bulk material. The bond length and bond covalency are calculated by chemical bond theory. The bond lengths of Y2O3:Eu3+ nanocrystal are shorter than those of the bulk counterpart and the bond covalency of Y2O3:Eu3+ nanocrystal also has an increasing trend. By combining centroid shift and crystal-field splitting, the blue-shift of the CT band is interpreted.

La-2, Yb-2, and Lu-2 have been studied by use of the density-functional methods B3LYP, BLYP, B3PW91, BHLYP, BP86, B3P86, MPW1PW91, and PBE1PBE. In these density-functional methods, the exchange functional is from either Becke's three-parameter HF-DFT hybrid exchange functional (B3), pure DFT exchange functional of 1988 (B), a modification of the half-and-half HF/DFT hybrid method (BH), Perdew-Wang 1991 (PW91), or Barone's modified PW91 (MPW1), while the correlation functional is from either Lee, Yang, and Parr (LYP), Perdew-Wang 1991 (PW91), or Perdew 86 (P86). PBE1PBE is the generalized-gradient-approximation exchange-correlation functional of Perdew, Burke, and Ernzerhof. For La-2, the calculated bond distance is in reasonable agreement with the experiment, but the calculated vibrational frequency is underestimated significantly compared with the experiment. Only BP86 and B3P86 have the best performance in reproducing the experimental dissociation energy for La-2. For the van der Waals dimer Yb-2, three functionals, B3LYP, BLYP, and BHLYP have excellent performance in reproducing the spectroscopic constants compared with both the experiment and previous theoretical studies.

The electronic structure of CaCu3Mn4O12 and LaCu3Mn4O12 was investigated using a full-potential linearized augmented plane wave method within the Generalized Gradient Approximation (GGA). The ferrimagnetic and ferromagnetic states in these two compounds were investigated and the calculated spin magnetic moments were found to be close to the available experimental values. Calculations of spin polarization for these two oxides show that the ferrimagnetic configurations are the energetically favored ground state, which is consistent with experimental observation. The calculations predict that CaCu3Mn4O12 is a semiconductor and that LaCu3Mn4O12 is a half-metallic material. Furthermore, the relevance of these different electronic structures to the magnetoresistance is discussed.

We use molecular statics and dynamics to study the stability of L-aspartic acid both in vacuo and solvated by polar and non-polar molecules using density functional theory in the generalized gradient approximation. We find that structures stable in vacuo are unstable in aqueous solution and vice versa. From our simulations we are able to come to some conclusions about the mechanism of stabilisation of zwitterions by polar protic solvents, water and methanol.

Catalytic formation of N2O via a (NO)(2) intermediate was studied employing density functional theory with generalized gradient approximations. Dimer formation was not favored on Pt(111), in agreement with previous reports. On Pt(211) a variety of dimer structures were studied, including trans-(NO)(2) and cis-(NO)(2) configurations. A possible pathway involving (NO)(2) formation at the terrace near to a Pt step is identified as the possible mechanism for low-temperature N2O formation. The dimer is stabilized by bond formation between one O atom of the dimer and two Pt step atoms. The overall mechanism has a low barrier of approximately 0.32 eV. The mechanism is also put into the context of the overall NO+H-2 reaction. A consideration of the step-wise hydrogenation of O-(ads) from the step is also presented. Removal of O-(ads) from the step is significantly different from O-(ads) hydrogenation on Pt(111). The energetically favored structure at the transition state for OH(ads) formation has an activation energy of 0.63 eV. Further hydrogenation of OH(ads) has an activation energy of 0.80 eV. Catalytic formation of N2O and NO2 were studied employing density functional theory with generalized gradient approximations, in order to investigate the microscopic reaction pathways of these catalytic processes on a Pt(111) surface. Transition states and reaction barriers for the addition of chemisorbed N or chemisorbed O to NO(ads) producing N2O and NO2, respectively, were calculated. The N2O transition state involves bond formation across the hcp hollow site with an associated reaction barrier of 1.78 eV. NO2 formation favors a fcc hollow site transition state with a barrier of 1.52 eV. The mechanisms for both reactions are compared to CO oxidation on the same surface. The activation of the chemisorbed NO and the chemisorbed N or O from the energetically stable initial state to the transition state are both significant contributors to the overall reaction barrier E-a, in contrast to CO oxidation in which the activation of the O-(ads) is much greater than CO(ads) activation. Catalytic ammonia synthesis is believed to proceed via dissociation of N-2 and H-2 with subsequent stepwise addition reactions from an adsorbed nitrogen atom to NH3. The first step, N-2 dissociation, has been thoroughly studied. However, little is known about the microscopic details of the stepwise addition reactions. To shed light on these stepwise addition reactions, density functional theory calculations with the generalized gradient approximation are employed to investigate NHx (x=1,3) formation on Ru(0001). Transition states and reaction barriers are determined in each elementary step. It is found that the reaction barriers for stepwise addition reactions are rather high, for example, the barrier for NH hydrogenation is calculated to be 1.28 eV, which is comparable with that of N-2 dissociation. In addition, one of the stepwise addition reactions on a stepped surface is also considered. The reaction barrier is found to be much higher than that of N-2 dissociation on the same stepped surface, which indicates the importance of stepwise addition reactions in ammonia synthesis. We have performed density functional theory calculations with the generalized gradient approximation to investigate CO oxidation on a close-packed transition metal surface, Pd(lll), and a more open surface, Pd(100), aiming to shed light on surface structure effects on reaction pathways and reactivity, an important issue in catalysis. Reaction pathways on both surfaces at two different coverages have been studied. It is found that the reaction pathways on both surfaces possess crucial common features despite the fact that they have different surface symmetries. Having determined reaction barriers in these systems, we find that the reaction on Pd(lll) is strongly coverage dependent. Surface coverages, however, have little effect on the reaction on Pd(100). Calculations also reveal that the low coverage reactions are structure sensitive while the medium coverage reactions are not. Detailed discussions on these results are given.

The role of dispersion or van de Waals (VDW) interactions in imidazolium-based room-temperature ionic liquids is studied within the framework of density functional theory, using a recently developed non-empirical functional [M. Dion, H. Rydberg, E. Schroder, D. C. Langreth, and B. I. Lundqvist, Phys. Rev. Lett. 92, 246401 (2004)], as efficiently implemented in the SIESTA code [G. Roman-Perez and J. M. Soler, Phys. Rev. Lett. 103, 096102 (2009)]. We present results for the equilibrium structure and lattice parameters of several crystalline phases, finding a general improvement with respect to both the local density (LDA) and the generalized gradient approximations (GGA). Similar to other systems characterized by VDW bonding, such as rare gas and benzene dimers as well as solid argon, equilibrium distances and volumes are consistently overestimated by approximate to 7%, compared to -11% within LDA and 11% within GGA. The intramolecular geometries are retained, while the intermolecular distances and orientations are significantly improved relative to LDA and GGA. The quality is superior to that achieved with tailor-made empirical VDW corrections ad hoc [M. G. Del Popolo, C. Pinilla, and P. Ballone, J. Chem. Phys. 126, 144705 (2007)]. We also analyse the performance of an optimized version of this non-empirical functional, where the screening properties of the exchange have been tuned to reproduce high-level quantum chemical calculations [J. Klimes, D. Bowler, and A. Michaelides, J. Phys.: Condens. Matter 22, 074203 (2010)]. The results for solids are even better with volumes and geometries reproduced within 2% of experimental data. We provide some insight into the issue of polymorphism of [bmim][Cl] crystals, and we present results for the geometry and energetics of [bmim][Tf] and [mmim][Cl] neutral and charged clusters, which validate the use of empirical force fields. Time-dependent density-functional theory is a rather accurate and efficient way to compute electronic excitations for finite systems. However, in the macroscopic limit (systems of increasing size), for the usual adiabatic random-phase, local-density, or generalized-gradient approximations, one recovers the Kohn-Sham independent-particle picture, and thus the incorrect band gap. To clarify this trend, we investigate the macroscopic limit of the exchange-correlation kernel in such approximations by means of an algebraical analysis complemented with numerical studies of a one-dimensional tight-binding model. We link the failure to shift the Kohn-Sham spectrum of these approximate kernels to the fact that the corresponding operators in the transition space act only on a finite subspace.

The standard local density approximation and generalized gradient approximations fail to properly describe the dissociation of an electron pair bond, yielding large errors (on the order of 50 kcal/mol) at long bond distances. To remedy this failure, a self-consistent Kohn-Sham (KS) method is proposed with the exchange-correlation (xc) energy and potential depending on both occupied and virtual KS orbitals. The xc energy functional of Buijse and Baerends [Mol. Phys. 100, 401 (2002); Phys. Rev. Lett. 87, 133004 (2001)] is employed, which, based on an ansatz for the xc-hole amplitude, is able to reproduce the important dynamical and nondynamical effects of Coulomb correlation through the efficient use of virtual orbitals. Self-consistent calculations require the corresponding xc potential to be obtained, to which end the optimized effective potential (OEP) method is used within the common energy denominator approximation for the static orbital Green's function. The problem of the asymptotic divergence of the xc potential of the OEP when a finite number of virtual orbitals is used is addressed. The self-consistent calculations reproduce very well the entire H-2 potential curve, describing correctly the gradual buildup of strong left-right correlation in stretched H-2. An approximate Kohn-Sham (KS) exchange potential v(xsigma)(CEDA) is developed, based on the common energy denominator approximation (CEDA) for the static orbital Green's function, which preserves the essential structure of the density response function. v(xsigma)(CEDA) is an explicit functional of the occupied KS orbitals, which has the Slater v(Ssigma) and response v(respsigma)(CEDA) potentials as its components. The latter exhibits the characteristic step structure with "diagonal" contributions from the orbital densities \psi(isigma)\(2), as well as "off-diagonal" ones from the occupied-occupied orbital products psi(isigma)psi(j(not equal1)sigma). Comparison of the results of atomic and molecular ground-state CEDA calculations with those of the Krieger-Li-Iafrate (KLI), exact exchange (EXX), and Hartree-Fock (HF) methods show, that both KLI and CEDA potentials can be considered as very good analytical "closure approximations" to the exact KS exchange potential. The total CEDA and KLI energies nearly coincide with the EXX ones and the corresponding orbital energies epsilon(isigma) are rather close to each other for the light atoms and small molecules considered. The CEDA, KLI, EXX-epsilon(isigma) values provide the qualitatively correct order of ionizations and they give an estimate of VIPs comparable to that of the HF Koopmans' theorem. However, the additional off-diagonal orbital structure of v(xsigma)(CEDA) appears to be essential for the calculated response properties of molecular chains. KLI already considerably improves the calculated (hyper)polarizabilities of the prototype hydrogen chains H-n over local density approximation (LDA) and standard generalized gradient approximations (GGAs), while the CEDA results are definitely an improvement over the KLI ones. The reasons of this success are the specific orbital structures of the CEDA and KLI response potentials, which produce in an external field an ultranonlocal field-counteracting exchange potential. The adsorption of C atoms on the α-Fe2O3 (001) surface was studied based on density function theory (DFT), in which the exchange-correlation potential was chosen as the PBE (Perdew, Burke and Ernzerhof) generalized gradient approximation (GGA) with a plane wave basis set. Upon the optimization on different adsorption sites with coverage of 1/20 and 1/5 ML, it was found that the adsorption of C atoms on the α-Fe 2O3 (001) surface was chemical adsorption. The coverage can affect the adsorption behavior greatly. Under low coverage, the most stable adsorption geometry lied on the bridged site with the adsorption energy of about 3.22 eV; however, under high coverage, it located at the top site with the energy change of 8.79 eV. Strong chemical reaction has occurred between the C and O atoms at this site. The density of states and population analysis showed that the s, p orbitals of C and p orbital of O give the most contribution to the adsorption bonding. During the adsorption process, O atom shares the electrons with C, and C can only affect the outermost and subsurface layers of α-Fe2O3; the third layer can not be affected obviously. We have performed ab initio density functional theory calculations with the generalized gradient approximation to investigate CO oxidation on Ru(0001). Several reaction pathways and transition states are identified. A much higher reaction barrier compared to that on Pt(111) is determined, confirming that the Ru is very inactive for CO oxidation under UHV conditions. The origin of the reaction barrier was analyzed. It is found that in the transition state the chemisorbed O atom sits in an unfavorable bonding site and a significant competition for bonding with the same substrate atoms occurs between the CO and the chemisorbed O, resulting in the high barrier. Ab initio molecular dynamics calculations show that the activation of the chemisorbed O atom from the initial hcp hollow site (the most stable site) to the bridge site is the crucial step for the reaction. The CO oxidation on Ru(0001) via the Eley-Rideal mechanism has also been investigated. A comparison with previous theoretical work has been made. (C) 2000 American Institute of Physics. Ab initio total energy calculations using density functional theory with the generalized gradient approximation have been performed for the chemisorption of oxygen atoms on a Pt{100}-(1 x 1) slab. Binding energies for the adsorption of oxygen on different high-symmetry sites are presented. The bridge site is the most stable at a coverage of 0.5 ML, followed by the fourfold hollow site. The atop site is the least stable. This finding is rationalized by analyzing the ''local structures'' formed upon oxygen chemisorption. The binding energies and heats of adsorption at different oxygen coverages show that pairwise repulsive interactions are considerably stronger between oxygen atoms occupying fourfold sites than those occupying bridge sites. Analysis of the partial charge densities associated with Bloch states demonstrates that the O-Pt bond is considerably more localized at the bridge site. These effects cause a sharp drop in the heats of adsorption for oxygen on hollow sites when the coverage is increased from 0.25 to 0.5 ML. Mixing between oxygen p orbitals and Pt d orbitals can be observed over the whole metal d-band energy range.
