From the twentieth century is witnessing a gradual increase in the debates and issues related to the degradation of nature, making the twenty-first century begins under the aegis of speeches linked to this concept as one of the axes of the concerns of humanity. There are several movements that are related to the degrading way of contemporary society and how we are called upon daily to save and defend nature, from the consumption of sustainable products through environmentally friendly lifestyles. While this may appear to be explicit that the current form of metabolic interaction man / nature in the current historical period of capitalism converges in a bleak scenario, however, there is an ideological and peacemaker convergence between productively and the systematic appeal to the consumption. Given these assumptions could be palpable the question that in the course of human history would be ideological conceptions of nature? Being a true statement what is the conflict present in the ideological struggle over nature with regard to the genesis of modern geography? Would it be overt or covert? These questions lead us to the present study, whose goal is to bring some notes about the ideological conceptions of the nature in human history, culminating in the possible influences upon the institutionalization of Modern Geography

This article has been generated by the interface between geography and music. Methodologically, we have used a multidisciplinary bibliography that contemplates cultural geography, history, music, linguistics, literature, anthropology, for we understand that, for the understanding of a polysemous code, as it is in music, we need a diversity of looks. Our main document for an analysis of the construction of Brasília is the “Sinfonia da Alvorada” (Symphony of the Dawn), composed by Antônio Carlos Jobim and Vinícius de Moraes. Here, we attempt mainly to do a textual analysis of the work under an external perspective of the symphonic work, we mean, analyzing more its semantics (considering the product between interlocution and interpretation), and less its instrumental aesthetics, although the latter is also present. Finally, we attempt to understand the connection that exists between the actors and the spaces which are metamorphosing along with the construction of the city and which puts into evidence the idea of social circularity, proposed by the “Sinfonia da Alvorada”. This piece captures social and cultural elements related to the construction of Brasília and repositions and rearranges it through the execution of the music, in such a way that this arrangement can provide a change in the senses which are constructed from the urban experience in Brasília.

This study concerns the representation of space in Caribbean literature, both francophone and Anglophone and, in particular, but not only, in the martinican literature, in the works of the authors born in the island. The analysis focus on the second half of the last century, a period in which the martinican production of novels and romances increased considerably, and where the representation and the rule of space had a relevant place. So, the thesis explores the literary modalities of this representation. The work is constituted of 5 chapters and the critical and methodological approaches are both of an analytical and comparative type. The first chapter “The caribbean space: geography, history and society” presents the geographic context, through an analysis of the historical and political major events occurred in the Caribbean archipelago, in particular of the French Antilles, from the first colonization until the départementalisation. The first paragraph “The colonized space: historical-political excursus” the explores the history of the European colonization that marked forever the theatre of the relationship between Europe, Africa and the New World. This social situation take a long and complex process of “Re-appropriation and renegotiation of the space”, (second paragraph) always the space of the Other, that interest both the Antillean society and the writers’ universe. So, a series of questions take place in the third paragraph “Landscape and identity”: what is the function of space in the process of identity construction? What are the literary forms and representations of space in the Caribbean context? Could the writing be a tool of cultural identity definition, both individual and collective? The second chapter “The literary representation of the Antillean space” is a methodological analysis of the notions of literary space and descriptive gender. The first paragraph “The literary space of and in the novel” is an excursus of the theory of such critics like Blanchot, Bachelard, Genette and Greimas, and in particular the recent innovation of the 20th century; the second one “Space of the Antilles, space of the writing” is an attempt to apply this theory to the Antillean literary space. Finally the last paragraph “Signs on the page: the symbolic places of the antillean novel landscape” presents an inventory of the most recurrent antillean places (mornes, ravines, traces, cachots, En-ville,…), symbols of the history and the past, described in literary works, but according to new modalities of representation. The third chapter, the core of the thesis, “Re-drawing the map of the French Antilles” focused the study of space representation on francophone literature, in particular on a selected works of four martinican writers, like Roland Brival, Édouard Glissant, Patrick Chamoiseau and Raphaël Confiant. Through this section, a spatial evolution comes out step by step, from the first to the second paragraph, whose titles are linked together “The novel space evolution: from the forest of the morne… to the jungle of the ville”. The virgin and uncontaminated space of the Antilles, prior to the colonisation, where the Indios lived in harmony with the nature, find a representation in both works of Brival (Le sang du roucou, Le dernier des Aloukous) and of Glissant (Le Quatrième siècle, Ormerod). The arrival of the European colonizer brings a violent and sudden metamorphosis of the originary space and landscape, together with the traditions and culture of the Caraïbes population. These radical changes are visible in the works of Chamoiseau (Chronique des sept misères, Texaco, L’esclave vieil homme et le molosse, Livret des villes du deuxième monde, Un dimanche au cachot) and Confiant (Le Nègre et l’Amiral, Eau de Café, Ravines du devant-jour, Nègre marron) that explore the urban space of the creole En-ville. The fourth chapter represents the “2nd step: the Anglophone novel space” in the exploration of literary representation of space, through an analytical study of the works of three Anglophone writers, the 19th century Lafcadio Hearn (A Midsummer Trip To the West Indies, Two Years in the French West Indies, Youma) and the contemporary authors Derek Walcott (Omeros, Map of the New World, What the Twilight says) and Edward Kamau Brathwaite (The Arrivants: A New World Trilogy). The Anglophone voice of the Caribbean archipelago brings a very interesting contribution to the critical idea of a spatial evolution in the literary representation of space, started with francophone production: “The spatial evolution goes on: from the Martiniques Sketches of Hearn… to the modern bards of Caribbean archipelago” is the new linked title of the two paragraphs. The fifth chapter “Extended look, space shared: the Caribbean archipelago” is a comparative analysis of the results achieved in the prior sections, through a dialogue between all the texts in the first paragraph “Francophone and Anglophone representation of space compared: differences and analogies”. The last paragraph instead is an attempt of re-negotiate the conventional notions of space and place, from a geographical and physical meaning, to the new concept of “commonplace”, not synonym of prejudice, but “common place” of sharing and dialogue. The question sets in the last paragraph “The “commonplaces” of the physical and mental map of the Caribbean archipelago: toward a non-place?” contains the critical idea of the entire thesis.

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------- ABSTRACT ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------- The main goal of this PhD. Thesis is to demonstrate that a multidisciplinary analysis is needed during the implementation phase of preservation of heritage programmes. Such analysis allows the identification of significant results, which in turn can serve as the foundation for the conceptual bases of the public policy at hand. Thus, any corrections can be made both during the programme and afterward, by introducing new strategies to be applied in future intervention programmes. On the other hand, this project also asks whether cities participating in the same national preservation of heritage programme with common rules and goals can achieve distinct results. In order to meet these objectives, the project chose Brazil as its focus and Monumenta Programme for its object of study. This Programme is part of the Ministry of Culture’s public cultural policy, and was developed with cooperation by the Inter-American Development Bank. Implemented at the national level in 1999, the Programme aimed at promoting a process of sustainable urban renewal and the preservation of 26 urban historic sites or urban monumental ensembles, protected by the National Historic and Artistic Heritage Institute (IPHAN). UNESCO and IPHAN supported the Programme, and participants included municipal and state offices, private businesses, and local residents. The hypotheses established in this Doctoral Thesis were: (a) the analysis of the results in the implementation phase of a cultural public policy is imperative, because it enables preliminary conclusions to be drawn and orientate reforms; (b) the short-term objectives set out in the Monumenta Programme were achieved differently in the benefitted cities; (c) despite the differences, the Monumenta Programme displayed significant positive preliminary results in the conservation of the urban historic heritage in Brazil. Methodology procedures centered around quantitative, qualitative, and comparative analyses of the results achieved in three benefiting cities, selected according to population size: Pelotas, Porto Alegre (Rio Grande do Sul State) and São Francisco do Sul (Santa Catarina State). These procedures were applied to the following indicators: the use of the cultural facilities, characteristics of the population and the residential housing, variation of the economic activities, financing destined for the recovery of real estate, and promoting urban safety. The Thesis includes discussions and concepts addressed in urban sociology, urban geography, history, economics, and statistics, in order to examine the object of study with an interdisciplinary eye and an understanding between preservation theory and practice. Variance analysis, linear regression, and factorial analysis were the statistical techniques applied to the data, with the goal of defining the significance of the results and the correspondence ratio between some of the variables. This Thesis attempted to elaborate an applied methodology for calculating the space occupied by economic activities, using John Wilder Tukey's statistical method of Box-and-Whisker Plot. The conclusions corroborated the hypotheses established and are meant to contribute to the design of new public policies of historical site preservation in urban settings, emphasizing the need for deeper evaluations of the results during the implementation phase.

This is the story of an extraordinary Aboriginal woman, Princy Carlo, and the identity of place she and her descendants fashioned within the confines of the Aboriginal settlement of Cherbourg (formerly Barambah), during the early twentieth century. The patch of Cherbourg that came to be known as 'Chinatown' has to date attracted cursory reference in historical commentary on the south-eastern Queensland Aboriginal settlement. Yet, hidden beneath what may appear as an inconsequential historical detail lies a fascinating illustration of the negotiation of place identity within a frame of triangulated group relations (Aboriginal-Chinese-White) in what remained, in essence, a colonial society. Incorporating primary written sources and oral accounts from descendants the study analyses the forging of the Chinatown identity of place through a process of 'spatial othering', eliciting features unique to this indigenous identity-construct. The study provides an insight into Aboriginal connection and kinship with land following forced removal to a government settlement, and contributes to the historical records of the Cherbourg Aboriginal community and the Eidsvold district in Queensland, Australia. Network analysis has emerged as a key technique in communication studies, economics, geography, history and sociology, among others. A fundamental issue is how to identify key nodes in a network, for which purpose a number of centrality measures have been developed. This paper proposes a new parametric family of centrality measures called generalized degree. It is based on the idea that a relationship to a more interconnected node contributes to centrality in a greater extent than a connection to a less central one. Generalized degree improves on degree by redistributing its sum over the network with the consideration of the global structure. Application of the measure is supported by a set of basic properties. A sufficient condition is given for generalized degree to be rank monotonic, excluding counter-intuitive changes in the centrality ranking after certain modifications of the network. The measure has a graph interpretation and can be calculated iteratively. Generalized degree is recommended to apply besides degree since it preserves most favorable attributes of degree, but better reflects the role of the nodes in the network and has an increased ability to distinguish between their importance.
