The Daya Bay Reactor Antineutrino Experiment observed the disappearance of reactor $\bar{\nu}_e$ from six $2.9~GW_{th}$ reactor cores in Daya Bay, China. The Experiment consists of six functionally identical $\bar{\nu}_e$ detectors, which detect $\bar{\nu}_e$ by inverse beta decay using a total of about 120 metric tons of Gd-loaded liquid scintillator as the target volume. These $\bar{\nu}_e$ detectors were installed in three underground experimental halls, two near halls and one far hall, under the mountains near Daya Bay, with overburdens of 250 m.w.e, 265 m.w.e and 860 m.w.e. and flux-weighted baselines of 470 m, 576 m and 1648 m. A total of 90179 $\bar{\nu}_e$ candidates were observed in the six detectors over a period of 55 days, 57549 at the Daya Bay near site, 22169 at the Ling Ao near site and 10461 at the far site. By performing a rate-only analysis, the value of $sin^2 2\theta_{13}$ was determined to be $0.092 \pm 0.017$.

The aim of this presentation is to report a new result of afterglow materials. The Y2OS: Ln(3+) (Ln = Sm, Tm) phosphors show bright reddish orange and orange-yellow colors when excited by UV or visible light. The main spectroscopic characterizations of Sin(3+) and Tin(3+) in yttrium oxysulfide and their long-lasting phosphorescence were measured and discussed in this presentation. Their long-lasting phosphorescence can be seen by the naked eyes clearly for about one hour in the dark room after the Irradiation light sources were removed. XRD and photoluminescence (PL) spectra as well as the luminance decay were used to characterize these long-lasting phosphorescence phosphors. The results of XRD indicate that the products synthesized through the flux fusion method tinder 1050 degreesC, for 6 It have a good crystallization without any detectable amount of impurity phase. Both the PL spectra and luminance decay results reveal that these phosphors have efficient luminescent and good long-lasting properties. We believe that the experimental data gathered in our present work will be. useful in finding some new long-lasting phosphors with different colors.

The p-toluene sulfonic acid (MA) in phenol matrix was separated and determined by capillary electrophoresis with ultraviolet detector. the effect of the concentration and pH of the buffer on separation was investigated. Cinnamic acid has been chosen as the internal standard from four compounds, the calibration curves of PTSA in 50 mg/L phenol matrix were obtained with and without the internal standard. The linear range was from 1.25 to 12.5 mg/L and the correlation coefficient was 0.9999 for both curves. The limit of detection of PISA was 0.75 mg/L at 3 times of SIN. Finally, the concentration of PTSA in four synthesized samples was determined with method of standard additions, and the effect of matrix was discussed. The values of MA in these samples were 1.01, 0.94, 1.56 and 0.00 mg/L respectively.

This study explores the effectiveness of a Church-based recovery program for the mentally ill in Korea where many Christian communities view mental illness as evidence of sin. Building on theological and psychological literature, an empirical study was conducted with participants in the alternative program of the Han-ma-um community. Data analysis revealed that this program, which views mental disorders as illness rather than sin, helps participants build self-respect and enables families to provide support as they move toward recovery. Based on this empirical examination, recommendations for refinement and expansion of the program and avenues for future research are proposed.

This article examines advocacy of Catholic restorative justice for clerical child sexual abuse from the standpoint of feminist criminological critiques of the use of restorative mediation in sexual offence cases. In particular, it questions the Catholic invocation of grace and forgiveness of survivors of abuse in light of critical feminist concerns about the exploitation of emotions in restorative practices, especially in regard to sexual and other gender-based offences. In the context of sexual abuse, the Catholic appeal to grace has the potential for turning into an extraordinary demand made of victims not only to rehabilitate offenders and the church in the eyes of the community, but also to work towards the spiritual absolution of the abuser. This unique feature of Catholic-oriented restorative justice raises important concerns in terms of feminist critiques of the risk of abuses of power within mediation, and is also incompatible with orthodox restorative justice theory, which, although it advocates a ‘spiritual’ response to crime, is concerned foremost with the rights, needs and experiences of victims.

CB1, TRPV1 and NO can regulate glutamate release and modify defensive behaviors in regions related to defensive behavior such as the dorsolateral periaqueductal gray (dIPAG). A possible interaction between the endocannabinoid and nitrergic systems in this area, however, has not been investigated yet. The objective of the present work was to verify if activation of CB1 or TRPV1 receptors could interfere in the flight responses induced in rats by the injection of SIN-1, an NO donor, into the dIPAG. The results showed that local administration of a low dose (5 pmol) of anandamide (AEA) attenuated the flight responses, measured by the total distance moved and maximum speed in an open arena, induced by intra-dIPAG microinjection of SIN-1 (150 nmol). URB597 (0.1 nmol), an inhibitor of anandamide metabolism, produced similar effects. When animals were locally treated with the CB1 receptor antagonist AM251 the effective AEA dose (5 pmol) increased, rather than decreased, the flight reactions induced by SIN1-1. Higher (50-200 nmol) doses of AEA were ineffective and even tended to potentiate the SIN-1 effect. The TRPV1 antagonist capsazepine (CPZ, 30 nmol) prevented SIN-1 effects and attenuated the potentiation of its effect by the higher (200 nmol) AEA dose. The results indicate that AEA can modulate in a dual way the pro-aversive effects of NO in the dIPAG by activating CB1 or TRPV1 receptors. (C) 2012 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

R. G. Collingwood’s philosophical analysis of religious atonement as a dialectical process of mortal repentance and divine forgiveness is explained and criticized. Collingwood’s Christian concept of atonement, in which Christ TeX the Atonement (and also TeX the Incarnation), is subject in turn to another kind of dialectic, in which some of Collingwood’s leading ideas are first surveyed, and then tested against objections in a philosophical evaluation of their virtues and defects, strengths and weaknesses. Collingwood’s efforts to synthesize objective and subjective aspects of atonement, and his proposal to solve the soteriological problem as to why God becomes flesh, as a dogma of some Christian belief systems, is finally exposed in adversarial exposition as inadequately supported by one of his main arguments, designated here as Collingwood’s Dilemma. The dilemma is that sin is either forgiven or unforgiven by God. If God forgives sin, then God’s justice is lax, whereas if God does not forgive sin, then, also contrary to divine nature, God lacks perfect loving compassion. The dilemma is supposed to drive philosophy toward a concept of atonement in which the sacrifice of Christ is required in order to absolve God of the lax judgment objection. God forgives sin only when the price of sin is paid, in this case, by the suffering and crucifixion of God’s avatar. The dilemma can be resolved in another way than Collingwood considers, undermining his motivation for synthesizing objective and subjective facets of the concept of atonement for the sake of avoiding inconsistency. Collingwood is philosophically important because he asks all the right questions about religious atonement, and points toward reasonable answers, even if he does not always deliver original philosophically satisfactory solutions.

Hyper-Kamiokande will be a next generation underground water Cherenkov detector with a total (fiducial) mass of 0.99 (0.56) million metric tons, approximately 20 (25) times larger than that of Super-Kamiokande. One of the main goals of HyperKamiokande is the study of CP asymmetry in the lepton sector using accelerator neutrino and anti-neutrino beams. In this paper, the physics potential of a long baseline neutrino experiment using the Hyper-Kamiokande detector and a neutrino beam from the J-PARC proton synchrotron is presented. The analysis uses the framework and systematic uncertainties derived from the ongoing T2K experiment. With a total exposure of 7.5 MW × 10⁷ s integrated proton beam power (corresponding to 1.56 × 10²² protons on target with a 30 GeV proton beam) to a 2.5-degree off-axis neutrino beam, it is expected that the leptonic CP phase δCP can be determined to better than 19 degrees for all possible values of δCP , and CP violation can be established with a statistical significance of more than 3 σ (5 σ) for 76% (58%) of the δCP parameter space. Using both νe appearance and νµ disappearance data, the expected 1σ uncertainty of sinθ₂₃ is 0.015(0.006) for sinθ₂₃ = 0.5(0.45).

The relationship between hantaviruses and their reservoir hosts is not well understood. We successfully passaged a mouse-adapted strain of Sin Nombre virus from deer mice (Peromyscus maniculatus) by i.m. inoculation of 4- to 6-wk-old deer mouse pups. After inoculation with 5 ID50, antibodies to the nucleocapsid (N) antigen first became detectable at 14 d whereas neutralizing antibodies were detectable by 7 d. Viral N antigen first began to appear in heart, lung, liver, spleen, and/or kidney by 7 d, whereas viral RNA was present in those tissues as well as in thymus, salivary gland, intestine, white fat, and brown fat. By 14 d nearly all tissues examined displayed both viral RNA and N antigen. We noted no consistent histopathologic changes associated with infection, even when RNA load was high. Viral RNA titers peaked on 21 d in most tissues, then began to decline by 28 d. Infection persisted for at least 90 d. The RNA titers were highest in heart, lung, and brown fat. Deer mice can be experimentally infected with Sin Nombre virus, which now allows provocative examination of the virus-host relationship. The prominent involvement of heart, lung, and brown fat suggests that these sites may be important tissues for early virus replication or for maintenance of the virus in nature.

Nitric oxide (NO) produced opposite effects on acetylcholine (ACh) release in identified neuroneuronal Aplysia synapses depending on the excitatory or the inhibitory nature of the synapse. Extracellular application of the NO donor, SIN-1, depressed the inhibitory postsynaptic currents (IPSCs) and enhanced the excitatory postsynaptic currents (EPSCs) evoked by presynaptic action potentials (1/60 Hz). Application of a membrane-permeant cGMP analog mimicked the effect of SIN-1 suggesting the participation of guanylate cyclase in the NO pathway. The guanylate cyclase inhibitor, methylene blue, blocked the NO-induced enhancement of EPSCs but only reduced the inhibition of IPSCs indicating that an additional mechanism participates to the depression of synaptic transmission by NO. Using nicotinamide, an inhibitor of ADP-ribosylation, we found that the NO-induced depression of ACh release on the inhibitory synapse also involves ADP-ribosylation mechanism(s). Furthermore, application of SIN-1 paired with cGMP-dependent protein kinase (cGMP-PK) inhibitors showed that cGMP-PK could play a role in the potentiating but not in the depressing effect of NO on ACh release. Increasing the frequency of stimulation of the presynaptic neuron from 1/60 Hz to 0.25 or 1 Hz potentiated the EPSCs and reduced the IPSCs. In these conditions, the potentiating effect of NO on the excitatory synapse was reduced, whereas its depressing effect on the inhibitory synapse was unaffected. Moreover the frequency-dependent enhancement of ACh release in the excitatory synapse was greatly reduced by the inhibition of NO synthase. Our results indicate that NO may be involved in different ways of modulation of synaptic transmission depending on the type of the synapse including synaptic plasticity.

The role of morality and sin in therapy is a controversial topic. However, therapy has a distinctly moral nature, and the Christian concept of sin provides a helpful framework within which the therapist can effectively respond to clients' feeling guilt for their wrong doing as they present in therapy. This paper discusses how the moral nature of therapy must be understood and embraced if it is to encourage both insight and increased self-efficacy in treatment. The Christian concept of sin is discussed as well as a psychological definition of sin and its effects. A potential treatment approach is presented which emphasizes responsibility and restoration through insight, compassion, and increased self-efficacy. This approach is then displayed through a case example.
