The present investigation observed the sealing ability of low shrinkage composite resins in large and deep cavities, placed and photocured in one increment. Large, deep cavities (5.0 mm diameter and 2.5 mm deep) surrounded by enamel were prepared in bovine teeth, which were then divided into five groups. Groups 1, 2, 3 and 4: acid conditioning + Adper Single Bond (3M/ESPE, St Paul, MN, USA) and restoration with Aelite LS Posterior (BISCO Inc. Schaumburg, IL, USA) (G1); Filtek Z-350 (3M/ESPE,St Paul, MN, USA) (G2); Filtek Z-350 Flow (3M/ESPE, St Paul, MN, USA) (G3); Premisa (KERR Corporation, Orange, CA, USA) (G4). Group 5: Silorane Adhesive system (3M/ESPE, St Paul, MN, USA) + restoration with Filtek Low Shrinkage Posterior P90 (3M/ESPE, St Paul, MN, USA). After polymerization, the teeth were immersed in 0.5% basic fuchsine solution and immediately washed. Using the Imagetool Software, the extent of dye along the margins was calculated as a percentage of total perimeter. The restorations were then transversally sectioned and the depth of dye penetration was calculated in mm, using the same software. Kruskal-Wallis analysis for all groups showed no statistical differences for extent (p = 0.54) or depth (p = 0.8364) of dye penetration. According to this methodology, the so-called low shrinkage composite resins had the same sealing ability compared to regular and flowable nanocomposite materials.

Objectives. To verify the hypothesis that crack analysis and a mechanical test would rank a series of composites in a similar order with respect to polymerization stress. Also, both tests would show similar relationships between stress and composite elastic modulus and/or shrinkage. Methods. Soda-lime glass discs (2-mm thick) with a central perforation (3.5-mm diameter) received four Vickers indentations 500 mu m from the cavity margin. The indent cracks were measured (500x) prior and 10 min after the cavity was restored with one of six materials (Kalore/KL, Gradia/GR, Ice/IC, Wave/WV, Majesty Flow/MF, and Majesty Posterior/MP). Stresses at the indent site were calculated based on glass fracture toughness and increase in crack length. Stress at the bonded interface was calculated using the equation for an internally pressurized cylinder. The mechanical test used a universal testing machine and glass rods (5-mm diameter) as substrate. An extensometer monitored specimen height (2 mm). Nominal stress was calculated dividing the maximum shrinkage force by the specimen cross-sectional area. Composite elastic modulus was determined by nanoindentation and post-gel shrinkage was measured using strain gages. Data were subjected to one-way ANOVA/Tukey or Kruskal-Wallis/Mann-Whitney tests (alpha: 5%). Results. Both tests grouped the composites in three statistical subsets, with small differences in overlapping between the intermediate subset (MF, WV) and the highest (MP, IC) or the lowest stress materials (KL, GR). Higher stresses were developed by composites with high modulus and/or high shrinkage. Significance. Crack analysis demonstrated to be as effective as the mechanical test to rank composites regarding polymerization stress. (c) 2012 Academy of Dental Materials. Published by Elsevier Ltd. This paper evaluates the photopolymerization kinetics and degree of conversion of different commercial dental composites when photoactivated by a LED curing unit using two different modes (standard and soft-start mode). The investigation was performed on with RelyX ARC (dual-cured), Filtek Z-350 (Nanocomposite), Filtek Z-250 (Hybrid), and Filtek Z-350flow (Flowable) resin composites. The analysis used was attenuated total reflection with a Fourier transform infrared (ATR-FTIR). The RelyX ARC resin demonstrated the highest degree of conversion with both LED photoactivation modes. For this resin a 28% decrease in maximum rate was observed and the time to reach its highest rate was almost 2.3 times higher than when the soft-start photoactivation light curing was used. Z-350flow resin recorder a higher maximum rate using the soft-start mode rather than the standard mode. In contrast, the Z-250 showed a higher value using the standard mode. Although Z-250 and Z-350 showed a higher total degree of conversion effectiveness using the soft-start mode, RelyX and Z-350flow achieved a higher value using the standard mode.

Objectives: The aim was to investigate the influence of increment thickness on shear bond strength (SBS) to dentin of a conventional and two bulk fill flowable composites. Methods: A total of 135 specimens of ground human dentin were produced (n=15/group; 3 increment thicknesses; 3 flowable composites) and the dentin surfaces were treated with the adhesive system OptiBond FL (Kerr) according to manufacturer’s instructions. Split Teflon molds (inner diameter: 3.6 mm) of 2 mm, 4 mm, or 6 mm height allowing three increment thicknesses were clamped on the dentin surfaces and filled with either the conventional flowable Filtek Supreme XTE ((XTE); 3M ESPE) or the bulk fill flowables Filtek Bulk Fill ((FBF); 3M ESPE) or SDR ((SDR); DENTSPLY Caulk). The flowable composites were light-cured for 20 s (Demi LED; Kerr) and the specimens stored for 24 h (37°C, 100% humidity). Specimens were then subjected to a SBS-test in a universal testing machine at a cross-head speed of 1 mm/min (Zwick Z010; Zwick GmbH & Co.). SBS-values were statistically analysed with a nonparametrical ANOVA followed by exact Wilcoxon rank sum tests (α=0.05). Failure mode of the specimens was determined under a stereomicroscope at 25× magnification. Results: SBS-values (MPa) at 2 mm/4 mm/6 mm increment thicknesses (mean value [standard deviation]) were for XTE: 18.8 [2.6]/17.6 [1.6]/16.7 [3.1], for FBF: 20.6 [2.7]/17.8 [2.7]/18.7 [2.9], and for SDR: 21.7 [2.6]/18.5 [2.6]/20.3 [3.0]. For all three flowable composites, 2 mm increments yielded the highest SBS-values whereas for increments of 4 mm and 6 mm no differences were detected. All specimens presented failure modes involving cohesive failure in dentin. Conclusion: The influence of increment thickness on dentin SBS was less pronounced than expected. However, the high number of cohesive failures in dentin, reflecting the efficiency of the adhesive system, suggests a limited discriminatory power of the SBS-test.

Hyaluronan (HA) plays an important role in lung pathophysiology. For this reason it has attracted great attention both as active ingredient and as excipient in treating lung diseases by direct pulmonary HA administration. The aim was the production of highly respirable and flowable HA powders either as a potential carrier for drug delivery or for being delivered directly by inhalation. Engineered sodium hyaluronate powders were produced by spray-drying technique. All the spray-dried powders were characterised in terms of particle size distribution, drug content, morphology and in vitro respirability. HA was successfully formulated with salbutamol sulphate in combination with leucine and highlighted remarkable aerodynamic performance (emitted dose equal to 83 % and FPF % equal to 97.1%). Moreover, HA colloidal solutions were designed and they were spray-dried. In order to improve particle aerodynamic characteristics, different types of excipients were investigated. In particular, stearylamine (5% w/w) allowed to obtain the best performance throughout the experimental set. Finally, in vitro biocompatibility was carried out by MTT assay and High Content Analysis for selected dry powder formulations and starting materials. The assays demonstrated the same outcome by confirming the HA biocompatibility and by producing the same rank of toxicity for the surfactants. The general conclusion of the project is that formulation containing HA and stearyl alcohol represents the best performing formulation.

The apple is attacked by a significant number of insect pests in Brazilian commercial orchards, including Bonagota salubricola and Grapholita molesta (Lepidoptera: Tortricidae). Sexual disruption of B. salubricola and G. molesta was evaluated in apple orchard using the flowable pheromone formulations, SPLAT Grafo+Bona (SG+B), SPLAT Attract and Kill Grafo+Bona (SAKG+B), and compared with the standard insecticides used for management in the Integrated Apple Production (IAP) system. Both formulations were applied at a rate of 1kg/ha on October 10, 2005 and December 13, 2005 using 300 and 1000 point sources/ha of SG+B and SAKG+B, respectively in experimental units of 7 ha. Adult male captures of B. salubricola and G. molesta were evaluated weekly in Delta traps with specific synthetic sex pheromone from October 10, 2005 to February 14, 2006. Damage to fruits was evaluated on November 21 and December 21, 2005, and January 25 and February 14, 2006. In the SPLAT treated experimental units a significant reduction was observed in the number of B. salubricola and G. molesta males caught in Delta traps compared to the experimental unit IAP. Damage by B. salubricola at harvest ranged from 1.63 to 4.75% with no differences between treatments, while damage by G. molesta was near zero in all experimental units. Mating disruption using SG+B and SAKG+B was sufficient to control B. salubricola and G. molesta with results equivalent to IAP guidelines. This technology is promising for management of both pests in Brazilian apple orchards with immediate reduction of 43% in the number of insecticide applications.
