A series of novel organic-inorganic hybrid membranes have been prepared employing Nafion and acid-functionalized meso-structured molecular sieves (MMS) with varying structures and surface area. Acid-functionalized silica nanopowder of surface area 60 m(2)/g, silica meso-structured cellular foam (MSU-F) of surface area 470 m(2)/g and silica meso-structured hexagonal frame network (MCM-41) of surface area 900 m(2)/g have been employed as potential filler materials to form hybrid membranes with Nafion framework. The structural behavior, water uptake, proton conductivity and methanol permeability of these hybrid membranes have been investigated. DMFCs employing Nafion-silica MSU-F and Nafion-silica MCM-41 hybrid membranes deliver peak-power densities of 127 mW/cm(2) and 100 mW/cm(2), respectively; while a peak-power density of only 48 mW/cm(2) is obtained with the DMFC employing pristine recast Nafion membrane under identical operating conditions. The aforesaid characteristics of the hybrid membranes could be exclusively attributed to the presence of pendant sulfonic acid groups in the filler, which provide fairly continuous proton-conducting pathways between filler and matrix in the hybrid membranes facilitating proton transport without any trade-off between its proton conductivity and methanol crossover. Organic-inorganic hybrid membranes are prepared from Nafion and acid functionalized aluminosilicate with varying structures and surface areas. Acid-functionalized mesostructured aluminosilicate with cellular foam framework (Al-MSU-F type) of surface area 463 m(2) g(-1), acid-functionalized aluminosilicate molecular sieves (Al-HMS type) of surface area 651 m(2) g(-1) and acid-functionalized mesostructured aluminosilicate with hexagonal network (Al-MCM-41 type) of surface area 799 m(2) g(-1) have been employed as potential filler materials to form hybrid membranes with Nafion. The structural behavior, water uptake, ion-exchange capacity, proton conductivity and methanol permeability of the hybrid membranes are extensively investigated. Direct methanol fuel cells (DMFCs) with Al-HMS-Nafion and Al-MCM-41-Nafion hybrid membranes deliver respective peak power-densities of 170 mW cm(-2) and 246 mW cm(-2), while a peak power-density of only 48 mW cm(-2) is obtained for the DMFC employing pristine recast-Nafion membrane under identical operating conditions. The unique properties associated with hybrid membranes could be exclusively attributed to the presence of pendant sulfonic-acid groups in the filler materials, which provide proton-conducting pathways between the filler and matrix in the hybrid membranes, and facilitate proton transport with adequate balance between proton conductivity and methanol permeability. A new type of sulfonated clay (clay-SO3H) was prepared by the ion exchange method with the sulfanilic acid as the surfactant agent. The grafted amount of sulfanilic acid in clay-SO3H was 51.8 mequiv. (100 g)(-1), which was measured by thermogravimetric analysis (TGA). Sulfonated poly(ether ether ketone) (SPEEK)/clay-SO3H hybrid membranes which composed of SPEEK and different weight contents of clay-SO3H, were prepared by a solution casting and evaporation method. For comparison, the SPEEK/clay hybrid membranes were produced with the same method.

In this study. Nafion (R) 117 membrane is surface-modified with mesoporous silica layers through in situ surfactant-templated sol-gel reaction. The reaction makes use of tetraethyl orthosilicate (TEOS) under acidic condition via dip-coating technique on both sides. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM), Fourier transformation infrared (FTIR), and thermogravimetric analysis (TGA) are employed to characterize the resultant membranes. Proton conductivity and methanol permeability of the membranes are also studied.
Sulfonated poly(arylene-co-imide)s as water stable proton exchange membrane materials for fuel cells
Resumo:
A novel sulfonated poly(arylene-co-imide)s were synthesized by Ni(0) catalytic copolymerization of sodium 3-(2,5-dichlorobenzoyl)benzenesulfonate and naphthalimide dichloride monomer. The synthesized copolymers with the - SO3H group on the side-chain of polymers possessed high molecular weights revealed by their high viscosity and the formation of tough and flexible membranes. Because of the introduction of electron donating phenoxy groups into naphthalimide moieties, the hydrolysis of the imide rings was depressed. The resulting copolymers exhibited excellent water stability. The copolymer membranes display no apparently change in appearance, flexibility, and toughness after a soaking treatment in pressurized water at 140 degrees C for 250 h.

A novel colloid method using (WO3)(n)center dot xH(2)O as colloidal source was developed to prepare Pd/C catalyst for formic acid oxidation. Transmission electron microscopy image shows that the Pd/C nanoparticles have an average size of 3.3 nm and a narrow size distribution. Electrochemical measurements indicate that the Pd/C catalyst exhibits significantly high electrochemical active surface area and high catalytic activity with good stability for formic acid oxidation compared with that prepared by common method.

A novel sulfonated tetraamine, di(triethylammonium)-4,4'-bis(3,4-diaminophenoxy)biphenyl-3,3'-disulfonate (BAPBDS), was successfully synthesized by nucleophilic aromatic substitution of 4,4'-dihydroxybiphenyl with 5-chloro-2-nitroaniline, followed by sulfonation and reduction. A high-temperature polycondensation of sulfonated tetraamine, non-sulfonated tetraamine (4,4 -bis(3,4-aminophenoxy)biphenyl) and 1,4,5,8-naphthalenetetracarboxylic dianhydride (a) or 4,4'-binaphthyl-1,1',8,8'-tetracarboxylic dianydride (b) gave the poly[bis(benzimidazobenzisoquinolinones)] ionomers SPBIBI-a(x) or SPBIBI-b(x), where x refers to the molar percentage of the sulfonated tetraamine monomer. Flexible and tough membranes of high mechanical strength were obtained by solution casting and the electrolyte properties of the polymers were intensively investigated. The ionomer membranes displayed excellent dimensional and hydrolytic stabilities.

A series of cost-effective, proton-conducting composite membranes, comprising of Nafion (R) ionomer, chitosan (CS). and polyvinyl alcohol (PVA), is successfully prepared. By taking advantage of the strong electrostatic interactions between Nafion (R) ionomer and CS component, Nafion ionomer is effectively implanted into the PVA/CS composite membranes, and improves proton conductivity of the PVA/CS composite membranes. Furthermore, this effect dramatically depends on the composition ratio of PVA/CS, and the optimum conductivity is obtained at the PVA/CS ratio of 1:1. The developed composite membranes exhibit much lower methanol permeability compared with the widely used Nafion (R) membrane, indicating that these novel membranes have great potential for direct methanol fuel cells (DMFCs).

The size-controlled synthesis of Pd/C catalyst for formic acid electrooxidation is reported in this study. By using alcohol solvents with different chain length in the impregnation method, the sizes of Pd nanoparticles can be facilely tuned; this is attributed to the different viscosities of the solvents. The results show that a desired Pd/C catalyst with an average size of about 3 nm and a narrow size distribution is obtained when the solvent is n-butanol. The catalyst exhibits large electrochemically active surface area and high catalytic activity for formic acid electrooxidation.

In this work, a new promoter, tetrasulfophthalocyanine (FeTSPc), one kind of environmental friendly material, was found to be very effective in both inhibiting self-poisoning and improving the intrinsic catalysis activity, consequently enhancing the electro-oxidation current during the electro-oxidation of formic acid. The cyclic voltammograms test showed that the formic acid oxidation peak current density has been increased about 10 times compared with that of the Pt electrode without FeTSPc. The electrochemical double potential step chronoamperometry measurements revealed that the apparent activity energy decreases from 20.64 kJ mol(-1) to 17.38 kJ mol(-1) after Pt electrode promoted by FeTSPc. The promoting effect of FeTSPc may be owed to the specific structure and abundant electrons of FeTSPc resulting in both the steric hindrance of the formation of poisoning species (CO) and intrinsic kinetic enhancement. In the single cell test, the performance of DFAFC increased from 80 mW cm(-2) mg(-1) (Pt) to 130 mW cm(-2) mg(-1) after the anode electrode adsorbed FeTSPc.

Surface-modified Nafion (R) membrane was prepared by casting proton-conducting polyelectrolyte complexes on the surface of Nafion (R). The casting layer is homogeneous and its thickness is about 900 nm. The proton conductivity of modified Nafion (R) is slightly lower than that of plain Nafion (R); however, its methanol permeability is 41% lower than that of plain Nafion (R). The single cells with modified Nafion (R) exhibit higher open circuit voltage (OCV = 0.73 V) and maximal power density (P-max = 58 mW cm(-2)) than the single cells with plain Nafion (R) (OCV = 0.67 V, P x = 49 mW cm-2). It is a simple, efficient, cost-effective approach to modifying Nafion (R) by casting proton-conducting materials on the surface of Nafion (R).

A novel sulfonated diamine monomer, 2,2'-bis(p-aminophenoxy)-1,1'-binaphthyl-6,6'-disulfonic acid (BNDADS), was synthesized. A series of sulfonated polyimide copolymers containing 30-80 mol % BNDADS as a hydrophilic component were prepared. The copolymers showed excellent solubility and good film-forming capability. Atomic force microscopy phase images clearly showed hydrophilic/hydrophobic microphase separation. The relationship between the proton conductivity and degree of sulfonation was examined. The sulfonated polyimide copolymer with 60 mol % BNDADS showed higher proton conductivity (0.0945-0.161 S/cm) at 20-80 degrees C in liquid water. The membranes exhibited methanol permeability from 9 x 10(-8) to 5 X 10(-7) cm(2)/s at 20 degrees C, which was much lower than that of Nafion (2 x 10(-6) cm(2)/s). The copolymers were thermally stable up to 300 degrees C. The sulfonated polyimide copolymers with 30-60 mol % BNDADS showed reasonable mechanical strength; for example, the maximum tensile strength at break of the sulfonated polyimide copolymer with 40 mol % BNDADS was 80.6 MPa under high moisture conditions. The optimum concentration of BNDADS was found to be 60 mol % from the viewpoint of proton conductivity, methanol permeability, and membrane stability.

Polypyrrole (Ppy) was successfully introduced into methyl substituted sulfonated poly(ether ether ketone) (SPEEK) membranes by polymerization in SPEEK solutions to improve their methanol resistance. Uniform polypyrrole (Ppy) distributed composite membranes were formed by this method by the interaction between SPEEK and Ppy. The properties of the composite membranes were characterized in detail. The composite membranes show very good proton conductive capability (25 degrees C: 0.05-0.06s cm(-1)) and good methanol resistance (25 degrees C: 5.3 x 10(-7) 1.1 x 10(-6) cm(2) s(-1)). The methanol diffusion coefficients of composite membranes are much lower than that of pure SPEEK membranes (1.5 x 10(-6) cm(2) s(-1)). The composite membranes show very good potential usage in direct methanol fuel cells (DMFCs).

A novel series of polyaromatic ionomers with similar equivalent weights but very different sulphonic acid distributions along the ionomer backbone has been designed and prepared. By synthetically organising the sequence-distribution so that it consists of fully defined ionic segments (containing singlets, doublets or quadruplets of sulphonic acid groups) alternating strictly with equally well-defined nonionic spacer segments, a new class of polymers which may be described as microblock ionomers has been developed. These materials exhibit very different properties and morphologies from analogous randomly substituted systems. Progressively extending the nonionic spacer length in the repeat unit (maintaining a constant equivalent weight by increasing the degree of sulphonation. of the ionic segment) leads to an increasing degree of nanophase separation between hydrophilic and hydrophobic domains in these materials. Membranes cast from ionomers with the more highly phase-separated morphologies show significantly higher onset temperatures for uncontrolled swelling in water. This new type of ionomer design has enabled the fabrication of swelling-resistant hydrocarbon membranes, suitable for fuel cell operation, with very much higher ion exchange capacities (>2 meq g(-1)) than those previously reported in the literature. When tested in a fuel cell at high temperature (120 degrees C) and low relative humidity (35% RH), the best microblock membrane matched the performance of Nafion 112. Moreover, comparative low load cycle testing of membrane -electrode assemblies suggests that the durability of the new membranes under conditions of high temperature and low relative humidity is superior to that of conventional perfluorinated materials.

In this work, carbon-supported Pt70Co30 nanoparticles were prepared by a polyol process using a long-chain diol as reducer (hexadecanediol) and oleic acid and oleylamine as stabilizers. Depending on the synthesis conditions, Pt70Co30/C nanocatalysts with very small particle size (1.9 +/- 0.2 nm) and narrow distribution homogeneously dispersed on the carbon support and having a high degree of alloying without the need of thermal treatments were obtained. The as-prepared catalyst presents an excellent performance as proton exchange membrane fuel cells (PEMFC) cathode material. In terms of mass activity (MA), the Pt70Co30/C electrocatalysts produced single fuel cell polarization response superior to that of commercial catalyst. To analyze alloying effects, the result of thermal treatment at low temperatures (200-400 degrees C) was also evaluated and an increase of average crystallite size and a lower degree of alloying, probably associated to cobalt oxidation, were evidenced.
