The VUV-UV spectra of rare earth ions activated calcium borophosphate, CaBPO5:RE (RE = Ce3+, sm(3+), Eu2+, Eu3+, Tb3+ and Dy3+) were determined. The bands at about 155 nm in the VUV excitation spectra are attributed to the host lattice absorptions. The bands at 166 and 190 nm for the sample CaBPO5:Sm have been considered as related to the f-d transition and the charge transfer band (CTB) of Sm3+ ions, and the band at 169 nm for the sample CaBPO5:Dy is assumed to be connected with the f-d transition of the Dy3+ ions in CaBPO5. The partial reduction of Eu3+ CaBPO5:Eu prepared by high temperature solid state reaction in air is confirmed by the VUV-UV spectra.

When alkaline earth ions in borates, phosphates or borophosphates [SrB4O7, SrB6O10, BaB8O13, MBPO5 (M=Ca,Sr)] are substituted partially and aliovalently by trivalent rare earth ions such as Sm3+, Eu3+, these rare earth ions can be reduced to divalent state by the produced negative charge vacancy V-M". The matrices must have appropriate structure containing a rigid three-dimensional network of tetragonal AO(4) groups (A=B,P). These groups can surround and isolate the produced divalent RE2+ ions from the reaction with oxygen. Therefore, this reduction reaction can be carried out even in air at high temperature. The produced divalent rare earth ions can be detected by luminescence and XANES methods and their spectroscopic properties are discussed.

The measurements of VUV-UV photoluminescence emission (PL) and photoluminescence excitation (PLE) spectra of rare earth ions activated strontium orthophosphate [Sr-3(PO4)(2):RE, RE = Ce, Sm, Eu, Tb] are performed. Whenever the samples are excited by VUV or UV light, the typical emission of Ce-3+,Ce- Sm3+, Eu3+, Eu2+ and Tb3+ ions can be observed in PL spectra, respectively. The charge transfer bands (CTBs) of Sm3+ and Eu3+ are found, respectively, peaking at 206 and 230nm. The absorption bands peaking in the region of 150-160 nm are assigned to the host lattice sensitization bands, i.e., the band-to-band transitions of PO43- grouping in Sr-3(PO4)(2). It is speculated that the first f-d transitions of Sm3+ (Eu3+), and the CTB of Tb3+ are, respectively, located around 165 (14 3) and 167 urn by means of VUV-UV PLE spectra and relational empirical formula, these f-d transitions or CT bands are included in the bands with the maxima at 150-160 nm, respectively. The valence change of europium from trivalent to divalent in strontium orthophosphate prepared in air is observe by VUV-UV PL and PLE spectra.

The luminescence properties of CaBPO5: Eu, Tb phosphor and the sensitization of Ce3+ were investigated. The CaBPO5: Eu, Tb phosphors were synthesized in the ambient air and the emission spectra of Eu3+, Tb3+ and Eu2+ were Observed in the phosphor. The result shows that there is electron transfer between conjugate rare earth ions. Sensitization of Ce3+ can improve the intensity of emission of Tb3+ and Eu2+. A novel trichromatic lamp phosphor codoped with Eu3+-Tb3+ in matrix CaBPO5 is then predicted.

The spectroscopic feature of divalent Sm2+, Eu2+, Tm2+ and Yb2+ is discussed in this paper. Especially the spectroscopic properties of some berates containing tetrahedral BO4 group such as SrB4O7, SrB6O10 and BaB8O13 doped with these divalent ions are reported. When the divalent alkaline earth ion in these berates is replaced partially by the above trivalent rare earth ion, the charge carried in the produced defects can be used as reductant to reduce the doped rare earth ion into divalent state at high temperature even in air. Therefore, a convenient and safe method is provided to prepared phosphors doped with these divalent rare earths.

A four-level decay model in KMgF3:Eu2+ is proposed. The decay profiles of the P-6(7/2) excited state of Eu2+ are biexponential, and the physical implication of each term in the fit equation responsible for the model is interpreted. The evidence obtained spectroscopically for supporting the model is presented. A new method to study energy transfer between Eu2+ and X3+ in KMgF3:Eu-X (X = Gd, Ce, Cr) is established on the basis of the proposed model.

Two kinds of luminescent centers an observed in BaMgAl10O17:Eu2+ phosphor. Influence of flux on luminescence of Eu2+ in the phosphor is discussed in detail. There exists Eu2+ (F-) center (a luminescent center with 277 nm excitation band and 386 nm emission band) due to the substitution of F- ions for O2- ions, Effective energy transfer from Eu2+ (F-) to Eu2+ (O2-) (a luminescent center with 334 nm excitation band and 450 nm emission band) is observed. The quenching concentration of Eu2+ in BaMgAl10O17 is raised by 0.20 mole per mole host due to forming of new luminescent center Eu2+ (F-). (C) 2001 Elsevier Science Ltd. All rights reserved.

Phorsphors of BaY2F8 : Ce3+, BaY2F8: EU2+ and BaY2F8 : Ce, Eu were prepared by higher temperature solid reaction and their excitation, emission and diffuse reflection spectra were made. We firstly found that the competition of energy transfer from Ce3+ to Eu2+ and electron transfer from Ce3+ to EU3+ existed in CeF3 and EuF3-co-doped BaY2F8 systems. The f-f transition emission of EU2+ was increased with increasing x in systems BaY2F8 : 0. 03Ce, xEU. Ce4+ ions coexist, with Ce3+ ions and substitute Y3+ for Ce4+ in the systems BaY2F8 : Eu, Cc.

When CaS:Sm3+, Eu2+ is excited at 476.5 nm (Ar+), the emission spectra taken at room temperature and at 77 K are different, indicating that there are two competitive energy transfer processes-Sm3+ --> Eu2+ and Eu2+ --> Sm3+ with phonon participation. So, the luminescence intensity of Sm3+ increases first, and then decreases as the concentration of Eu2+ is increasing. (C) 2001 Elsevier Science Ltd. All rights reserved.

Energy transfer processes between Eu2+ and Gd3+, Cr3+, Ce3+ ions in KMgF3, which are difficult to study spectroscopically, have been investigated by using the proposed four-level decay model of the P-6(7/2) excited state of the Eu2+ ion. Gd3+ and Ce3+ transfer its energy to the vibronic transition of the P-6(7/2) --> S-8(7/2) transition of Eu2+, whereas Cr3+ receive energy from Eu2+ via the d-d interaction. The energy transfer from the Eu2+ 4f(6)5d level to the Ce3+ 4f5d state is observed spectroscopically, and the energy transfer mechanism is discussed. (C) 2001 Elsevier Science B.V. Photoluminescence characteristics and the energy transfer between Ce3+ and Eu2+ in BaLiF3 host lattice have been investigated. A series of concentrations of Ce3+ ion with a fixed Eu2+ concentration in doubly doped BaLiF3:Ce3+,Eu2+ have been studied. According to the defects forming after Eu2+ and Ce3+ entering the host lattice, cerium ions occupy the positions of nearest neighbors of the europium ions. The energy transfer probability and critical distance are calculated. (C) 1999 Elsevier Science Ltd. All rights reserved.

The dependence of the structure of the hosts on the M ion radius in MMgAl10O17 (M = Be, Mg, Ca, Sr, Ba, Pb, Eu, Mn, Fe, Co, Ni, Zn, Cd, Sn) system was studied and the luminescence of Eu2+ the mixed phase system was discussed. When M ion radius is less than 0.10 nm, the system MMgAl10O17 constructs by the mixed phases consisting of manegtoplumbite and spinel, alpha-alumina or spinel and alpha-alumina. In the mixed phase of manegtoplumbite and spinel and alpha-alumina, Eu2+ ion preferentially occupies lattice site of the cations in manegtoplumbite well matched with the radius and charge of Eu2+. There exists only d-->f transition emission of Eu2+ and no characteristic emission of Eu3+ occurs in those hosts. In the mixed phase of spinel and alpha-alumina, Eu2+ can enter the lattice site of Mg2+ ion or Al3+ ion and the d-->f and f-->f transition of Eu2+ can been observed respectively. Meanwhile, since the radius and charge of matrix lattice ions substituted by Eu2+ do not match with those of Eu2+, the valence state of Eu2+ is unstable. Eu2+ is partly changed into Eu3+ and the emission of Eu3+ is obviously observed even under the condition of reduction atmosphere. If reaction temperature is more than 1 150 degrees C, Al2O3 forms alpha-Al2O3 structure, the f-->f transition of Eu2+ appears. If reaction temperature is less than 1 150 degrees C, a mixed phase of alpha-Al2O3 and gamma-Al2O3 is formed, the f-->f transition of Eu2+ disappears and a new band emission from d-->f transition of Eu2+ occurs.

This paper reports a new observation of the abnormal reduction of Eu3+ --> Eu2+ in Sr2B5O9Cl when prepared in air at high temperature. A model based on the nature of substitution defects is proposed to explain this abnormal reduction. Electrons, which reduced the Eu3+ ions, are created by the substitution of cations first and then transferred to the target Eu3+ ions via tetrahedral berate anion groups. Codoping experiments are designed and performed. The results of these experiments support the model proposed. (C) 1999 Academic Press.

In this work, the persistent luminescence mechanisms of Tb3+ (in CdSiO3) and Eu2+ (in BaAl2O4) based on solid experimental data are compared. The photoluminescence spectroscopy shows the different nature of the inter- and intraconfigurational transitions for Eu2+ and Tb3+, respectively. The electron is the charge carrier in both mechanisms, implying the presence of electron acceptor defects. The preliminary structural analysis shows a free space in CdSiO3 able to accommodate interstitial oxide ions needed by charge compensation during the initial preparation. The subsequent annealing removes this oxide leaving behind an electron trap. Despite the low band gap energy for CdSiO3, determined with synchrotron radiation UV-VUV excitation spectroscopy of Tb3+, the persistent luminescence from Tb3+ is observed only with UV irradiation. The need of high excitation energy is due to the position of F-7(6) level deep below the bottom of the conduction band, as determined with the 4f(8)-> 4f(7)5d(1) and the ligand-to-metal charge-transfer transitions. Finally, the persistent luminescence mechanisms are constructed and, despite the differences, the mechanisms for Tb3+ and Eu2+ proved to be rather similar. This similarity confirms the solidity of the interpretation of experimental data for the Eu2+ doped persistent luminescence materials and encourages the use of similar models for other persistent luminescence materials. In this paper, a broad combined orange-red emission from Eu2+- and Eu3+-doped low-silica calcium aluminosilicate (LSCAS) glass is reported. Spectroscopic results demonstrate that it is possible to tune the emission wavelength by changing the excitation wavelength in the UV-Vis region. The color coordinates for the emission spectra were calculated, and using the Commission Internationale de l'Eclairage 1931 and 1976 chromatic diagrams, it is possible to note that they are dependent on the excitation wavelength. In addition, the (u', v') color coordinates for the investigated LSCAS samples are close to the Planckian spectrum in the cold region between 2000 and 2600K. Our results show that the Eu:LSCAS system can be used in a white light phosphor when mixed in aggregate with phosphors using green-yellow luminescent ions. (c) 2012 Optical Society of America
