A simulation study of a localised computer network

An investigation is carried out into the design of a small local computer network for eventual implementation on the University of Aston campus. Microprocessors are investigated as a possible choice for use as a node controller for reasons of cost and reliability. Since the network will be local, high speed lines of megabit order are proposed. After an introduction to several well known networks, various aspects of networks are discussed including packet switching, functions of a node and host-node protocol. Chapter three develops the network philosophy with an introduction to microprocessors. Various organisations of microprocessors into multicomputer and multiprocessor systems are discussed, together with methods of achieving reliabls computing. Chapter four presents the simulation model and its implentation as a computer program. The major modelling effort is to study the behaviour of messages queueing for access to the network and the message delay experienced on the network. Use is made of spectral analysis to determine the sampling frequency while Sxponentially Weighted Noving Averages are used for data smoothing.

Developing Collective Teaching Computer Software for the Course “Decision Theory”

Improvement of training students using modern information technologies, like collective developing teaching computer software, is discussed. Organizational, technical, technological advices are given. Experience of using information technologies in educational course “Decision Theory” is described.

The Matrix Method of Determining the Fault Tolerance Degree of a Computer Network Topology

This work presents a theoretical-graph method of determining the fault tolerance degree of the computer network interconnections and nodes. Experimental results received from simulations of this method over a distributed computing network environment are also presented.

Modeling of Effective Process of Network Maintaining Based on Statistical Data

This paper is dedicated to modelling of network maintaining based on live example – maintaining ATM banking network, where any problems are mean money loss. A full analysis is made in order to estimate valuable and not-valuable parameters based on complex analysis of available data. Correlation analysis helps to estimate provided data and to produce a complex solution of increasing network maintaining effectiveness.

The Visual Arts as a Canvas for Teaching Computer Programming

We explore the relationships between the construction of a work of art and the crafting of a computer program in Java and suggest that the structure of paintings and drawings may be used to teach the fundamental concepts of computer programming. This movement "from Art to Science", using art to drive computing, complements the common use of computing to inform art. We report on initial experiences using this approach with undergraduate and postgraduate students. An embryonic theory of the correspondence between art and computing is presented and a methodology proposed to develop this project further.

Anàlisis del contingut de webs antivacunes

Aquest estudi observacional transversal pretén analitzar la presència dels continguts antivacunes tipificats a l'article de Zimmerman et al. (2005) en els portals web que defensen aquestes postures. Del total de 16 pàgines web localitzades, la mitja del nombre de ítems avaluats que van aparèixer en cadascuna de les pàgines va ser 16,75 ± 5,7 (rang 9-27), destacant per damunt de tots l'ítem risc de malalties/seguretat de les vacunes" que hi apareix en totes les pàgines. També s'ha constatat que les pàgines web antivacunes al·leguen errades en les vacunes i greus violacions ètiques, incloent l'encobriment, conspiració, i violacions de llibertats civils.

¿Qué información sobre salud esconde Internet? Un análisis cualitativo de su contenido

L'acostament entre el professional de la salut i el qui necessita els seus serveis és un tema d'interès per a la psicologia de la salut des que va començar com a disciplina. En el context de la societat de la informació i el coneixement apareix un nou escenari d'intervenció d'aquests dos col·lectius que és necessari conèixer. Per això s'han començat diferents propostes, però la que presenta el grup d'investigació de Psicologia de la Salut i Xarxa (PSINET) de la Universitat Oberta de Catalunya s'encamina a potenciar la creació d'espais virtuals de trobada entre ambdós col·lectius (professionals de la salut i usuaris de serveis de salut). L'establiment de plataformes digitals de serveis sanitaris per als ciutadans del segle XXI passa primer per conèixer la realitat dels diferents col·lectius implicats en la relació salut i xarxa. L'objectiu que es planteja en aquest estudi se centra en el primer col·lectiu i en el descobriment del que hi ha sobre salut a Internet. Per a això, seguint una metodologia de recerca exhaustiva per Internet, s'han recollit webs sobre salut en català i castellà, i s'ha fet una anàlisi de dades textuals de la informació que contenien els webs en català. Aquesta anàlisi ha permès conèixer i descriure el prototip de web sobre salut que hi ha a la xarxa en el moment de fer l'estudi.

Lightweight monitoring of label switched paths for bandwidth management

The purpose of resource management is the efficient and effective use of network resources, for instance bandwidth. In this article, a connection oriented network scenario is considered, where a certain amount of bandwidth is reserved for each label switch path (LSP), which is a logical path, in a MPLS or GMPLS environment. Assuming there is also some kind of admission control (explicit or implicit), these environments typically provide quality of service (QoS) guarantees. It could happen that some LSPs become busy, thus rejecting connections, while other LSPs may be under-utilised. We propose a distributed lightweight monitoring technique, based on threshold values, the objective of which is to detect congestion when it occurs in an LSP and activate the corresponding alarm which will trigger a dynamic bandwidth reallocation mechanism

En el presente estudio se presenta un análisis de los contenidos antivacunas en páginas web publicado en Internet, tomando como referencia el trabajo ya realizado en el año 2005 por Zimmerman et al. (2005) en lengua inglesa. El objetivo es identificar, analizar y caracterizar los contenidos web antivacunas en Internet en lengua castellana y catalana.
