We reported the thermal conductivity of the two-dimensional carbon nanotube (CNT)-based architecture, which can be constructed through welding of single-wall CNTs by electron beam. Using large-scale nonequilibrium molecular dynamics simulations, the thermal conductivity is found to vary with different junction types due to their different phonon scatterings at the junction. The strong length and strain dependence of the thermal conductivity suggests an effective avenue to tune the thermal transport properties of the CNT-based architecture, benefiting the design of nanoscale thermal rectifiers or phonon engineering.

The effective medium theory for a system with randomly distributed point conductivity and polarisability is reformulated, with attention to cross-terms involving the two disorder parameters. The treatment reveals a certain inconsistency of the conventional theory owing to the neglect of the Maxwell-Wagner effect. The results are significant for the critical resistivity and dielectric anomalies of a binary liquid mixture at the phase separation point.

Thin films of Cu2SnS3 (CTS) were deposited by the facile solution processed sol-gel route followed by a low-temperature annealing. The Cu-Sn-thiourea complex formation was analysed using Fourier Transform Infrared spectrophotometer (FTIR). The various phase transformations and the deposition temperature range for the initial precursor solution was determined using Thermogravimetric analysis (TGA) and Differential Scanning Calorimetry (DSC). X-Ray Diffraction (XRD) studies revealed the tetragonal phase formation of the CTS annealed films. Raman spectroscopy studies further confirmed the tetragonal phase formation and the absence of any deterioratory secondary phases. The morphological investigations and compositional analysis of the films were determined using Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM) and Energy Dispersive Spectroscopy (EDS) respectively. Atomic Force Microscopy (AFM) was used to estimate the surface roughness of 1.3 nm. The absorption coefficient was found to be 10(4) cm(-1) and bandgap 1.3 eV which qualifies CTS to be a potential candidate for photovoltaic applications. The refractive index, extinction coefficient and relative permittivity of the film were measured by Spectroscopic ellipsometry. Hall effect measurements, indicated the p type nature of the films with a hole concentration of 2 x 10(18) cm(-3), electrical conductivity of 9 S/cm and a hole mobility of 29 cm(2)/V. The properties of CTS as deduced from the current study, present CTS as a potential absorber layer material for thin film solar cells. (C) 2015 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

The inverse coupled dependence of electrical conductivity and thermopower on carrier concentration presents a big challenge in achieving a high figure of merit. However, the simultaneous enhancement of electrical conductivity and thermopower can be realized in practice by carefully engineering the electronic band structure. Here by taking the example of Bi2S3, we report a simultaneous increase in both electrical conductivity and thermopower under hydrostatic pressure. Application of hydrostatic pressure enables tuning of electronic structure in such a way that the conductivity effective mass decreases and the density of states effective mass increases. This dependence of effective masses leads to simultaneous enhancement in electrical conductivity and thermopower under n-type doping leading to a huge improvement in the power factor. Also lattice thermal conductivity exhibits very weak pressure dependence in the low pressure range. The large power factor together with low lattice thermal conductivity results in a high ZT value of 1.1 under n-type doping, which is nearly two times higher than the previously reported value. Hence, this pressure-tuned behaviour can enable the development of efficient thermoelectric devices in the moderate to high temperature range. We further demonstrate that similar enhancement can be observed by generating chemical pressure by doping Bi2S3 with smaller iso-electronic elements such as Sb at Bi sites, which can be achieved experimentally.

An analytical model for thermal conductivity of composites with nanoparticles in a matrix is developed based on the effective medium theory by introducing the intrinsic size effect of thermal conductivity of nanoparticles and the interface thermal resistance effect between two phases. The model predicts the percolation of thermal conductivity with the volume fraction change of the second phase, and the percolation threshold depends on the size and the shape of the nanoparticles. The theoretical predictions are in agreement with the experimental results.

The thermal conductivity of periodic composite media with spherical inclusions embedded in a homogeneous matrix is discussed. Using Green's function, we show that the Rayleigh identity can be generalized to deal with the thermal properties of these systems. A technique for calculating effective thermal conductivities is proposed. Systems with cubic symmetries (including simple cubic, body centered cubic and face centered cubic symmetry) are investigated in detail, and useful formulae for evaluating effective thermal conductivities are derived.

High-quality InGaAs/InAlAs/InP high-electron-mobility transistor (HEMT) structures with lattice-matched or pseudomorphic channels have been grown by molecular-beam epitaxy (MBE). The purpose of this work is to enhance the channel conductivity by changing the epitaxial structure and growth process. With the use of pseudomorphic step quantum-well channel, the highest channel conductivity is achieved at x = 0.7, the corresponding electron mobilities are as high as 12300 (300 K) and 61000 cm(2)/V.s (77 K) with two-dimensional electron gas (2DEG) density of 3.3 x 10(12) cm(-2). These structures are comprehensively characterized by Hall measurements, photoluminescence, double crystal X-ray diffraction and transmission electron microscopy. Strong room-temperature luminescence is observed, demonstrating the high optical quality of the samples. We also show that decreasing the In composition in the InyAl1-yAs spacer is very effective to increase the 2DEG density of PHEMT structures. (C) 1998 Published by Elsevier Science B.V. An eigenfunction expansion-variational method based on a unit cell is developed to deal with the steady-state heat conduction problem of doubly-periodic fiber reinforced composites with interfacial thermal contact resistance or coating. The numerical results show a rapid convergence of the present method. The present solution provides a unified first-order approximation formula of the effective thermal conductivity for different interfacial characteristics and fiber distributions. A comparison with the present high-order results, available experimental data and micromechanical estimations demonstrates that the first-order approximation formula is a good engineering closed-form formula. An engineering equivalent parameter reflecting the overall influence of the thermal conductivities of the matrix and fibers and the interfacial characteristic on the effective thermal conductivity, is found. The equivalent parameter can greatly simplify the complicated relation of the effective thermal conductivity to the internal structure of a composite. (c) 2010 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

For steady-state heat conduction a new variational functional for a unit cell of composites with periodic microstructures is constructed by considering the quasi-periodicity of the temperature field and in the periodicity of the heat flux fields. Then by combining with the eigenfunction expansion of complex potential which satisfies the fiber-matrix interface conditions, an eigenfunction expansion-variational method (EEVM) based on a unit cell is developed. The effective transverse thermal conductivities of doubly-periodic fiber reinforced composites are calculated, and the first-order approximation formula for the square and hexagonal arrays is presented, which is convenient for engineering application. The numerical results show a good convergency of the presented method, even through the fiber volume fraction is relatively high. Comparisons with the existing analytical and experimental results are made to demonstrate the accuracy and validity of the first-order approximation formula for the hexagonal array.

Under alternating current electric field, effective response of granular nonlinear composites with spherical coated inclusions is investigated in the dilute limit by using the perturbation approach. For an external sinusoidal applied field with finite frequency omega, the local fields and potentials of composites in general consist of components at all harmonics for cubic nonlinear constitutive relationships. We derive the local potentials of spherical coated composites at harmonics. Moreover, we give the formulae of the nonlinear effective AC susceptibility at the third harmonic frequency.

The perturbation method is developed to deal with the problem of determining the effective nonlinear conductivity of Kerr-like nonlinear media under an external ac electric field. As an example, we have considered the cylindrical inclusion embedded in a host under the sinusoidal external field E-1 sin(omegat) + E-3 sin(3omegat) with frequencies omega and 3omega. The potentials of composites at higher harmonics are derived in both local inclusion particle and host regions. The effective responses of bulk nonlinear composites at basic frequency and harmonics are given for cylindrical composites in the dilute limit. Moreover, the relationships between the nonlinear effective responses at the basic frequency and the third harmonics are derived.

The perturbation method is developed to deal with the effective nonlinear dielectric responses of weakly nonlinear graded composites, which consist of the graded inclusion with a linear dielectric function of spatial variables of inclusion material. For Kerr-like nonlinear graded composites, as an example in two dimensions, we have used the perturbation method to solve the boundary value problems of potentials, and studied the effective responses of nonlinear graded composites, where a cylindrical inclusion with linear dielectric function and nonlinear dielectric constant is randomly embedded in a homogeneous host with linear and nonlinear dielectric constants. For the exponential function and the power-law dielectric profiles of cylindrical inclusions, in the dilute limit, we have derived the formulae of effective nonlinear responses of both graded nonlinear composites.

Under an external alternating current (ac) field, the effective ac dielectric response of graded composites consisting of the graded cylindrical inclusion having complex permittivity profiles has been investigated theoretically. A model that the dielectric function is assumed to be a constant while the conductivity has a power-law dependence on the radial variable r, namely epsilon(i)(r) = A + cr(k)/i omega. is studied and the local analytical potentials of the inclusion and the host regions are derived in terms of hyper-geometric function. In the dilute limit, the effective ac dielectric response is predicted. Meanwhile, we have given the exact proof of the differential effective dipole approximation (DEDA) method, which is suitable to arbitrary graded profiles. Furthermore, we have given the analytical potentials and the effective ac dielectric responses of coated graded cylindrical composites for two cases, case (a) graded core and case (b) graded coated layer, having the graded dielectric profiles, respectively. We present in this work a comparative study on density and transport properties, such as the conductivity (sigma), viscosity (eta) and self-diffusion coefficients (D), for electrolytes based on the lithium hexafluorophosphate, LiPF6; or on the lithium tris(pentafluoroethane)-trifluorophosphate, LiFAP dissolved in a binary mixture of ethylene carbonate (EC) and dimethylcarbonate (DMC) (50:50 wt%). For each electrolyte, the temperature dependence on transport properties over a temperature range from 10 to 80 degrees C and 20 to 70 degrees C for viscosity and conductivity, respectively, exhibits a non-Arrhenius behavior. However, this dependence is correctly correlated by using the Vogel-Tamman-Fulcher (VTF) type fitting equation. In each case, the best-fit parameters, such as the pseudo activation energy and ideal glass transition temperature were then extracted. The self-diffusion coefficients (D) of the Li+ cation and PF6- or FAP(-) anions species, in each studied electrolyte, were then independently determined by observing Li-3, F-19 and P-31 nuclei with the pulsed-gradient spin-echo (PGSE) NMR technique over the same temperature range from 20 to 80 degrees C. Results show that even if the diffusion of the lithium cation is quite similar in both electrolytes, the anions diffusion differs notably. In the case of the LiPF6-based electrolyte, for example at T approximate to 75 degrees C (high temperature), the self-diffusion coefficients of Li+ cations in solution (D (Li+)approximate to 5 x 10(-19) m(2) s(-1)) is 1.6 times smaller than that of PF6- anions (D (PF6-) = 8.5 x 10(-19) m(2) s(-1)), whereas in the case of the LiFAP-based electrolyte, FAP(-) anions diffuse at same rate as the Li+ cations (D (FAP(-)) = 5 x 10(-1) m(2) s(-1)). Based on these experimental results, the transport mobility of ions were then investigated through Stokes-Einstein and Nernst-Einstein equations to determine the transport number of lithium t(Li)(+), effective radius of solvated Li+ and of PF6- and FAP(-) anions, and the degree of dissociation of these lithium salts in the selected EC/DMC (50:50 wt%) mixture over a the temperature range from 20 to 80 degrees C. This study demonstrates the conflicting nature of the requirements and the advantage of the well-balanced properties as ionic mobility and dissociation constant of the selected electrolytes. In this paper the current development of the steady state migration test was reviewed. Experiments were carried out for a series of concrete mixes with the steady state migration test in which conductivity sensor technology is applied. With the developed steady state migration test, conductivity in anolyte, loop current and temperature can be monitored in real time. The experimental results are conductive to understand the mechanism of chloride migration during both unsteady state and steady state. The conductivity of anolyte could be used to calculate the chloride concentration in anolyte and the theoretical correlation between them was explained. Over all, the developed steady state migration is an effective, convenient, well-defined in theory and plentiful with information method which could be used to determine the chloride diffusion coefficient of cementitious materials.
