The nucleation and growth of vanadium oxide nanotubes (VOx-NT) have been followed by a combination of numerous ex situ techniques. long the hydrothermal process. Intermediate solid phases extracted at different reaction times have been characterized by powder X-ray diffraction, scanning and transmission electron microscopy, electron spin resonance, and V-K edge :X-ray absorption near-edge structure spectroscopy. The supernatant vanadate solutions extracted during the hydrothermal treatment have been studied by liquid V-51 NMR and flame. spectroscopy. For short durations of the hydrothermal synthesis, the initial V2O5-surfactant intercalate. is progressively transformed into VOx-NT whose crystallization starts to be detected after a hydrothermal treatment of 24 h. Upon heating from 24 h to 7 days, VOx-NT are obtained in larger amount and with an improved crystallinity. The detection of soluble amines and cyclic metavanadate V4O12](4-) in the supernatant solution along the hydrothermal process suggests that VOx-NT result from a dissolution precipitation mechanism. Metavanadate species V4O12](4-) could behave as molecular precursors in the polymerization reactions leading to VOx-NT.

The oxygen vacancy has been inferred to be the critical defect in HfO 2, responsible for charge trapping, gate threshold voltage instability, and Fermi level pinning for high work function gates, but it has never been conclusively identified. Here, the electron spin resonance g tensor parameters of the oxygen vacancy are calculated, using methods that do not over-estimate the delocalization of the defect wave function, to be g xx = 1.918, g yy = 1.926, g zz = 1.944, and are consistent with an observed spectrum. The defect undergoes a symmetry lowering polaron distortion to be localized mainly on a single adjacent Hf ion. © 2012 American Institute of Physics.

A Monte Carlo simulation on the basis of quantum trajectory approach is carried out for the measurement dynamics of a single-electron spin resonance. The measured electron, which is confined in either a quantum dot or a defect trap, is tunnel coupled to a side reservoir and continuously monitored by a mesoscopic detector. The simulation not only recovers the observed telegraphic signal of detector current, but also predicts unique features in the output power spectrum which are associated with electron dynamics in different regimes.

The electron spin resonance (ESR) is optically detected by monitoring the microwave-induced changes in the circular polarization of the neutral exciton (X) and the negatively charged exciton (X-) emission in CdTe quantum wells with low density of excess electrons. We find that the circular polarization of the X and X- emission is a mapping of the spin polarization of excess electrons. By analyzing the ESR-induced decrease in the circular polarization degree of the X emission, we deduce the microwave-induced electron spin-flip time >0.1 mus, which is much longer than the recombination time of X and X-. This demonstrates that the optically detected ESR in type I quantum wells with low density of excess electrons does not obey the prerequisite for the conventional optically detected magnetic resonance. Dyson's theory of conduction electron spin resonance (CESR) has been used in the limit d less than or equal to delta (d being the thickness of the sample and delta the skin depth of the microwave field) to obtain the microwave conductivity from the (A/B) ratio of the CESR absorbed power derivative. In this work we calculate the CESR absorbed power derivative using Kaplan's approach and show that the (A/B) ratio can be enhanced if asymmetrical penetration of microwave is used, which means that the microwave field enters into the sample from one of the faces. Therefore, the determination of the microwave conductivity from the (A/B) ratio of the CESR line can be performed for thinner samples. Experimentally, asymmetrical penetration can be obtained if one of the sample's faces is covered with a thin gold layer. The determination of microwave conductivity in conducting polymers films is among the possible applications of this method. (C) 2001 Elsevier B.V. Ltd. All rights reserved.

Gigahertz conductivity of pressed pellets of ClO4--doped poly( 3-methylthiophene) can be readily obtained from the asymmetry ratio (A / B) of the electron spin resonance line using Dyson's theory. The measurements were performed in three different frequencies, 1.3, 9.4, and 35 GHz. The temperature dependence of the gigahertz conductivity is sensitive to the heating rate, probably due to the ordering of the randomly assembled anions. (C) 1994 Academic Press, Inc.
