The modification of high-impact polystyrene (HIPS) was accomplished by melt-grafting glycidyl methacrylate (GMA) on its molecular chains. Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy and electron spectroscopy for chemical analysis were used to characterize the formation of HIPS-g-GMA copolymers. The content of GMA in HIPS-g-GMA copolymer was determined by using the titration method. The effect of the concentrations of GMA and dicumyl peroxide on the degree of grafting was studied. A total of 1.9% of GMA can be grafted on HIPS. HIPS-g-GNU was used to prepare binary blends with poly(buthylene terephthalate) (PBT), and the evidence of reactions between the grafting copolymer and PBT in the blends was confirmed by scanning electron microscopy (SEM), dynamic mechanical analysis, and its mechanical properties. The SEM result showed that the domain size in PBT/HIPS-g-GMA blends was reduced significantly compared with that in PBT/HIPS blends; moreover, the improved strength was measured in PBT/HIPS-g-GMA blends and results from good interfacial adhesion. The reaction between ester groups of PBT and epoxy groups of HIPS-g-GMA can depress crystallinity and the crystal perfection of PBT.

The graft copolymer of high impact polystyrene (HIPS) grafted with malice anhydride (MA) (HIPS-g-MA) was prepared with melt mixing in the presence of a free-radical initiator. The grafting reaction was confirmed by IR analyses and the amount of MA grafted on HIPS was evaluated by a titration method. 1-5 wt% of MA can be grafted on HIPS. HIPS-g-MA is miscible with HIPS. Its anhydride group can react with the PA6 during melt mixing the two components. The compatibility of HIPS-g-MA in the HIPS/PA6 blends was evident. Evidence of reactions in the blends was confirmed in the morphology and mechanical properties of the blends. A significant reduction in domain size was observed because of the compatibilization of HIPS-g-MA in the blends of HIPS and PA6. The tensile mechanical properties of the prepared blends were investigated and the fracture surfaces of the blends were examined by means of the scanning electron microscope (SEM). The improved adhesion in a 16%HIPS/75%PA6 blend with 9%HIPS-g-MA copolymer was detected. The morphology of fibrillar ligaments formed by PA6 connecting HIPS particles was observed.

In this work some basic constants of extractant Sec-Octylphenoxy acetic acid (CA-12) such as solubility (S) in water, dissociation constant (K-a) in aqueous solution, dimerization constant( K-2) and distribution constant (K-d) between water and haptane have been determined by two phase titration method. The results are as follows: S = 1.40 x 10(-4) mol/L, K-a = 3.02 x 10(-4), K-2 = 3.56 x 10(2), K-d = 4.06 x 10(2) (25 +/-0.5 degreesC).

The graft copolymer of high-impact polystyrene (HIPS) grafted with maleic anhydride (MA) (HIPS-g-MA) was prepared with melt mixing in the presence of a free-radical initiator. The grafting reaction was confirmed by infrared analyses, and the amount of MA grafted on HIPS was evaluated by a titration method. 1-5% of MA can be grafted on HIPS. HIPS-g-MA is miscible with HIPS. Its anhydride group can react with polyamide 1010 (PA1010) during melt mixing of the two components. The compatibility of HIPS-g-MA. in the HIPS/PA1010 blends was evident. Evidence of reactions in the blends was confirmed in the morphology and mechanical behavior of the blends. A significant reduction in domain size was observed because of the compatibilization of HIPS-g-MA in the blends of HIPS and PA1010. The tensile mechanical properties of the prepared blends were investigated, and the fracture surfaces of the blends were examined by means of the scanning electron microscope. The improved adhesion in a 15% HIPS/75% PA1010 blend with 10% HIPS-g-MA copolymer was detected. The morphology of fibrillar ligaments formed by PA1010 connecting HIPS particles was observed. A series of Sr2+ doped perovskite like oxides La2-xSrxCuO4-lambda (x = 0 similar to 1) were prepared, the structure, lattice parameters, content of Cu3+, oxygen vacancies created by Sr2+ substitution and composition of these complex oxides were studied by XRD and iodic titration method. The redox ability, active oxygen species and surface image were evaluated and analyzed with TPD, TG, XPS and SEM measurements. The catalytic activity for ammonia oxidation over these oxides was tested, and the relationship among the catalytic properties, structure, nonstoichiometric oxygen, redox ability and surface behavior were correlated and some information on the mechanism of ammonia oxidation was obtained.

A Prussian Blue-modified glassy carbon electrode prepared by simple adsorption exhibited excellent electrocatalytic activity in the oxidation of hydrazine in acidic media. A film of the perfluorosulphonic acid polymer Nafion coated on top of the Prussian Blue-modified glassy carbon electrode can improve the mechanical stability of the Prussian Blue layer in the flow stream. Hydrazine was detected by flow-injection analysis at the modified electrode with high sensitivity. The limit of detection was 0.6 ng.

Chemically modified electrodes prepared by adsorbing prussian blue on a glassy carbon electrode are shown to catalyse the electro-oxidation of cysteine, N-acetylcysteine and glutathione in acidic media. The catalytic response is evaluated with respect to the potential scan rate, the solution pH, the concentration dependence, and other variables. Covering the electrode with Nafion(R) film improved the stability and reproducibility in liquid chromatography with electrochemical detection to the extent that repetitive sample injections produced relative standard deviations of less than 5% over several hours of operation. The limit of detection was 4 pmol for cysteine, 33 pmol for glutathione and 61 pmol for N-acetylcysteine.

BACKGROUND: On the basis of preclinical studies of NC-6004, a cisplatin-incorporated micellar formulation, we hypothesised that NC-6004 could show lower toxicity than cisplatin and show greater anti-tumour activity in phase I study. METHODS: A total of 17 patients were recruited in a range of advanced solid tumour types. NC-6004 was administered intravenously (i.v.) every 3 weeks. The dose escalation started at 10?mg?m(-2) and was increased up to 120?mg?m(-2) according to the accelerated titration method and modified Fibonacci method. RESULTS: One dose-limiting toxicity (DLT) occurred in a patient who was given 90?mg?m(-2) of NC-6004, otherwise any significant cisplatin-related toxicity was not observed or generally mild toxicity was observed. Despite the implementation of post-hydration and pre-medication regimen, renal impairment and hypersensitivity reactions still developed at 120?mg?m(-2), which led to the conclusion that the maximum tolerated dose was 120?mg?m(-2), and the recommended dose was 90?mg?m(-2), although DLT was not defined as per protocol. Stable disease was observed in seven patients. The maximum concentration and area under the concentration-time curve of ultrafilterable platinum at 120?mg?m(-2) NC-6004 were 34-fold smaller and 8.5-fold larger, respectively, than those for cisplatin. CONCLUSION: The delayed and sustained release of cisplatin after i.v. administration contributes to the low toxicity of NC-6004.

We have investigated the changes in surface acidity/basicity and catalytic pro~erties of samarium oxide due to surface modification by SO42- ion. The acidity/basicity of the catalysts is determined by titration method using Hammett indicators. Esterification of acetic acid by n-butanol is chosen as a test reaction. Sm203, owing to its high basicity and low acidity, does not catalyze the reaction. But sulphated Sm20J catalyzes the esterification reaction effectively. Activation temperature does not have much effect on the acidity of sulphated samaria.

The surface electron donor properties of sulphate modified stannic oxide have been determined from the adsorption of electron acceptors of various electron affinities on the oxide surface. The acid base properties of stannic oxide have been determined by titration method using Hammett indicators. Catalytic activities of the oxide for esterification of acetic acid using n-butanol.reduction of cyclohexanone in 2-propanol and oxidation of cyclohexanol with benzophenone have been studied. The data have been correlated with the surface electron donor properties of these oxides. The activity for reduction and oxidation decreases and that for esterification reaction increases on modification with sulphate ion. It has heen found that electron donating capacity decreased when stannic oxide was modified with sulphate ion.

The surface acidity/ basicity of TiO2 (rutile) and its sulphate modified form have been determined by titration method using Hammett indicators after activation at different temperatures. The electron donating properties of these oxides are also studied from the adsorption of electron acceptors of different electron affinity values. The data have been correlated with the catalytic activity of these oxides towards esterification of acetic acid using n-butanol, reduction of cyclohexanone in isopropanol and oxidation of cyclohexanol in benzophenone. Catalytic activity for esterification and oxidation reaction parallels the acidity while that for reduction reaction parallels the basicity of these oxides.

The Lewis acidity of yttrium and dysprosium exchanged zeolite Y and ZSM-5 has been determined by titration method using Hammett indicators. The acidity of the Y form increases with increase in concentration of the rare earth cation in the Y zeolite. It is independent of the amount of the rare earth ion for ZSM-5. The data have been correlated with the activity of these zeolites for the esterification of butanol using acetic acid.
