Geology of the Pacoima Hills

The Pacoima Hills lie between Foothill Boulevard and the San Fernando Road, three miles southeast of San Fernando, California. In this area are exposed Jurassic(?) granodiorite intruded in older gneiss, and a mid Miocene Topango (?) sedimentary section lying in both fault and sedimentary contact with the intrusive complex. Two distinct lava flows and a small laccolith of andesite occur within the Topango (?) formation. The principal structural feature is an anticline plunging steeply northward. An upward acting force is postulated to have produced this anticline; upon cessation of the force, normal faulting occurred with consequent down-dropping of north-south blocks.

Mine-waste pollution of Bear Butte Creek, Black Hills, South Dakota

Effluents leaving the Gilt Edge Mining properties in the Black Hills near Deadwood, South Dakota, were collected during April 1940. Field studies of these effluents and of the streams receiving them were made at the time and subsequently laboratory assays and analyses have been completed. ... The present study deals with the length increment data of 15 adult Labeo rohita (Ham.) over a period of five months by the applicatin of finite difference method at an altitude of 1496 m above mean sea level at Shilllong, Meghalaya.

Structure and Change: Douglass North's Economics

Douglass North is a pivotal figure in the development of the 'new' economic history as well as the 'new' institutional economics. However, the relationship between these two aspects of his thinking remains undeveloped in previous critical assessments of North's work. The relationship is clarified here. The evidence presented indicates that three distinct phases can be distinguished in his writings between the 1950s and the 2000s. The paper relates these changing views to the shifting mainstream within economics and the effects that this shift has in turn had on economic history research. Economic history has adapted to economic research by abandoning some practices associated with the earlier cliometric literature. Furthermore, North is unique to the extent that his recent writings represent something of a convergence with 'old' institutionalism. © 2010 Taylor & Francis.
