Complexes of polyelectrolytes with defined charge distance and different dendrimer counterions Magdalena Chelmecka Max Planck Institute for Polymer Research; Ackermannweg 10; D-55128 Mainz ; Tel.: (+49) 06131- 379 – 226 A study of complexes in solution is of interest to investigate whether the formation of well-defined assemblies like in classical surfactant systems is possible. Aim of this thesis is to investigate the electrostatic self-assembly of linear polycations of varying charge distance with “large” counterions of varying architecture. We especially investigate the morphology of objects formed, but also their stability under salt free condition and after low molecular mass salt addition. As polycations, Poly(dialkylimino)-alkylene salts (Ionenes) I65MeBr and I25MeBr were chosen. Ionenes are synthesized via Menschutkin reaction and characterized by standard methods. Counterions are Polyamidoamine (PAMAM) dendrimers of generations G2.5, G5.5, G7.5 with -COONa surface groups and shape-persistent, Polyphenylene dendrimers of generation G1 with surface -COOH groups. A complex interplay of interactions is expected to direct the self assembly via electrostatic interaction, geometric factors, hydrophobic interaction or hydrogen bonds. Methods used for the investigation of complexes are: UV-spectroscopy, pH-metric techniques, dynamic and static light scattering, small angle neutron scattering, potential measurements and potentiometric titration. Under certain conditions, (i.e. charge ratio of compounds, charge density of ionene and dendrimer also concentration of sample) polyelectrolyte systems composed of ionenes and dendrimers build complexes in solution. System compounds are typical polyelectrolytes, but structures which they build behave not usual for typical polyelectrolytes. In a one diffusion mode regime aggregates of about 100 nm hydrodynamic radius have been found. Such aggregates are core-shell or anisotropic core shell structures in the case of ionenes/PAMAM dendrimers complexes. These complexes are stable even at high ionic strength. In case of ionenes with poly(phenylene) dendrimers, hard sphere-like objects or spherical objects with hairy-like surface have been found in a one diffusion mode regime. Their stability at high ionic strength is lower. For the ionenes/poly(phenylene) dendrimers systems one transition point has been found from one to two diffusion processes, towards increasing ionene concentration, i.e. for the samples with fixed dendrimer concentration towards increasing ionic strength. For the diffusion profile of ionene/PAMAM dendrimers in most cases two transition regimes are observed. One at very low ionene concentration, the second one at high ionene concentrations, which again means for the samples with fixed dendrimer concentration, also at higher ionic strength. Both two mode regimes are separated by the one mode regime. As was confirmed experimentally, the one diffusion mode regime is caused by the motion of well defined assemblies. The two diffusion mode regimes are caused by the movement of different sized species in solution, large aggregates and middle-size aggregates (oligoaggregates). The location and also the number of transition points in the diffusion profiles is dependent on the ionene to dendrimer charge ratio, charge density of the compounds and concentration. No influence of the molecular mass of the ionene has been found. The aggregates are found to be charged on the surface, however this surface charge does not significantly influence the diffusion properties of the system.

The task considered in this paper is performance evaluation of region segmentation algorithms in the ground-truth-based paradigm. Given a machine segmentation and a ground-truth segmentation, performance measures are needed. We propose to consider the image segmentation problem as one of data clustering and, as a consequence, to use measures for comparing clusterings developed in statistics and machine learning. By doing so, we obtain a variety of performance measures which have not been used before in image processing. In particular, some of these measures have the highly desired property of being a metric. Experimental results are reported on both synthetic and real data to validate the measures and compare them with others.

During decades Distance Transforms have proven to be useful for many image processing applications, and more recently, they have started to be used in computer graphics environments. The goal of this paper is to propose a new technique based on Distance Transforms for detecting mesh elements which are close to the objects' external contour (from a given point of view), and using this information for weighting the approximation error which will be tolerated during the mesh simplification process. The obtained results are evaluated in two ways: visually and using an objective metric that measures the geometrical difference between two polygonal meshes.

A new distance function to compare arbitrary partitions is proposed. Clustering of image collections and image segmentation give objects to be matched. Offered metric intends for combination of visual features and metadata analysis to solve a semantic gap between low-level visual features and high-level human concept.

In this contribution, we propose a first general definition of rank-metric convolutional codes for multi-shot network coding. To this aim, we introduce a suitable concept of distance and we establish a generalized Singleton bound for this class of codes.

Two different methods to measure binocular longitudinal corneal apex movements were synchronously applied. High-speed videokeratoscopy at a sampling frequency of 15 Hz and a customdesigned ultrasound distance sensor at 100 Hz were used for the left and the right eye, respectively. Four healthy subjects participated in the study. Simultaneously, cardiac electric cycle (ECG) was registered for each subject at 100 Hz. Each measurement took 20 s. Subjects were asked to suppress blinking during the measurements. A rigid headrest and a bite-bar were used to minimize undesirable head movements. Time, frequency and time-frequency representations of the acquired signals were obtained to establish their temporal and spectral contents. Coherence analysis was used to estimate the correlation between the measured signals. The results showed close correlation between both corneal apex movements and the cardiopulmonary system. Unraveling these relationships could lead to better understanding of interactions between ocular biomechanics and vision. The advantages and disadvantages of the two methods in the context of measuring longitudinal movements of the corneal apex are outlined.

This paper proposes the validity of a Gabor filter bank for feature extraction of solder joint images on Printed Circuit Boards (PCBs). A distance measure based on the Mahalanobis Cosine metric is also presented for classification of five different types of solder joints. From the experimental results, this methodology achieved high accuracy and a well generalised performance. This can be an effective method to reduce cost and improve quality in the production of PCBs in the manufacturing industry.

Today more than ever, generating and managing knowledge is an essential source of competitive advantage for every organization, and particularly for Multinational corporations (MNC). However, despite the undisputed agreement about the importance of creating and managing knowledge, there are still a large number of corporations that act unethically or illegally. Clearly, there is a lack of attention in gaining more knowledge about the management of ethical knowledge in organizations. This paper refers to value-based knowledge, as the process of recognise and manage those values that stand at the heart of decision-making and action in organizations. In order to support MNCs in implementing value-based knowledge process, the managerial ethical profile (MEP) has been presented as a valuable tool to facilitate knowledge management process at both the intra-organizational network level and at the inter-organizational network level.

This chapter seeks to develop an analysis of the contemporary use of the ePortfolio (Electronic Portfolio) in education practices. Unlike other explorations of this new technology which are deterministic in their approach, the authors seek to reveal the techniques and practices of government which underpin the implementation of the e-portfolio. By interrogating a specific case study example from a large Australian university’s preservice teacher program, the authors find that the e-portfolio is represented as eLearning technology but serves to govern students via autonomization and self responsibilization. Using policy data and other key documents, they are able to reveal the e-portfolio as a delegated authority in the governance of preservice teachers. However, despite this ongoing trend, they suggest that like other practices of government, the e-portfolio will eventually fail. This however the authors conclude opens up space for critical thought and engagement which is not afforded presently.

Dynamic load sharing can be defined as a measure of the ability of a heavy vehicle multi-axle group to equalise load across its wheels under typical travel conditions; i.e. in the dynamic sense at typical travel speeds and operating conditions of that vehicle. Various attempts have been made to quantify the ability of heavy vehicles to equalise the load across their wheels during travel. One of these was the concept of the load sharing coefficient (LSC). Other metrics such as the dynamic load coefficient (DLC) have been used to compare one heavy vehicle suspension with another for potential road damage. This paper compares these metrics and determines a relationship between DLC and LSC with sensitivity analysis of this relationship. The shortcomings of these presently-available metrics are discussed with a new metric proposed - the dynamic load equalisation (DLE) measure.

Historically, distance education consisted of a combination of face-to-face blocks of time and surface mailed packages. However, advances in information technology literacy and the abundance of personal computers has placed e-learning in increased demand. The authors describe the planning, implementation, and evaluation of the blending of e-learning with face-to-face education in the postgraduate nursing forum. Experiences of this particular student group are also discussed.
