Background: The aim of this study was to identify novel candidate biomarker proteins differentially expressed in the plasma of patients with early stage acute myocardial infarction (AMI) using SELDI-TOF-MS as a high throughput screening technology. Methods: Ten individuals with recent acute ischemic-type chest pain (< 12 h duration) and ST-segment elevation AMI (1STEMI) and after a second AMI (2STEMI) were selected. Blood samples were drawn at six times after STEMI diagnosis. The first stage (T(0)) was in Emergency Unit before receiving any medication, the second was just after primary angioplasty (T(2)), and the next four stages occurred at 12 h intervals after T(0). Individuals (n = 7) with similar risk factors for cardiovascular disease and normal ergometric test were selected as a control group (CG). Plasma proteomic profiling analysis was performed using the top-down (i.e. intact proteins) SELDI-TOF-MS, after processing in a Multiple Affinity Removal Spin Cartridge System (Agilent). Results: Compared with the CG, the 1STEMI group exhibited 510 differentially expressed protein peaks in the first 48 h after the AMI (p < 0.05). The 2STEMI group, had similar to 85% fewer differently expressed protein peaks than those without previous history of AMI (76, p < 0.05). Among the 16 differentially-regulated protein peaks common to both STEMI cohorts (compared with the CG at T(0)), 6 peaks were persistently down-regulated at more than one time-stage, and also were inversed correlated with serum protein markers (cTnI, CK and CKMB) during 48 h-period after IAM. Conclusions: Proteomic analysis by SELDI-TOF-MS technology combined with bioinformatics tools demonstrated differential expression during a 48 h time course suggests a potential role of some of these proteins as biomarkers for the very early stages of AMI, as well as for monitoring early cardiac ischemic recovery. Much information on flavonoid content of Brazilian foods has already been obtained; however, this information is spread in scientific publications and non-published data. The objectives of this work were to compile and evaluate the quality of national flavonoid data according to the United States Department of Agriculture`s Data Quality Evaluation System (USDA-DQES) with few modifications, for future dissemination in the TBCA-USP (Brazilian Food Composition Database). For the compilation, the most abundant compounds in the flavonoid subclasses were considered (flavonols, flavones, isoflavones, flavanones, flavan-3-ols, and anthocyanidins) and the analysis of the compounds by HPLC was adopted as criteria for data inclusion. The evaluation system considers five categories, and the maximum score assigned to each category is 20. For each data, a confidence code (CC) was attributed (A, B, C and D), indicating the quality and reliability of the information. Flavonoid data (773) present in 197 Brazilian foods were evaluated. The CC ""C"" (as average) was attributed to 99% of the data and ""B"" (above average) to 1%. The main categories assigned low average scores were: number of samples; sampling plan and analytical quality control (average scores 2, 5 and 4, respectively). The analytical method category received an average score of 9. The category assigned the highest score was the sample handling (20 average). These results show that researchers need to be conscious about the importance of the number and plan of evaluated samples and the complete description and documentation of all the processes of methodology execution and analytical quality control. The Brazilian Network of Food Data Systems (BRASILFOODS) has been keeping the Brazilian Food Composition Database-USP (TBCA-USP) (http://www.fcf.usp.br/tabela) since 1998. Besides the constant compilation, analysis and update work in the database, the network tries to innovate through the introduction of food information that may contribute to decrease the risk for non-transmissible chronic diseases, such as the profile of carbohydrates and flavonoids in foods. In 2008, data on carbohydrates, individually analyzed, of 112 foods, and 41 data related to the glycemic response produced by foods widely consumed in the country were included in the TBCA-USP. Data (773) about the different flavonoid subclasses of 197 Brazilian foods were compiled and the quality of each data was evaluated according to the USDAs data quality evaluation system. In 2007, BRASILFOODS/USP and INFOODS/FAO organized the 7th International Food Data Conference ""Food Composition and Biodiversity"". This conference was a unique opportunity for interaction between renowned researchers and participants from several countries and it allowed the discussion of aspects that may improve the food composition area. During the period, the LATINFOODS Regional Technical Compilation Committee and BRASILFOODS disseminated to Latin America the Form and Manual for Data Compilation, version 2009, ministered a Food Composition Data Compilation course and developed many activities related to data production and compilation. Foods that contain unavailable carbohydrates may lower the risks for some non-transmissible chronic diseases because of the potential benefits provided by the products of colonic fermentation. On the other hand, foods that are sources of available carbohydrates may have higher energy value and increase the post-prandial glycemic response. The biomarker glycemic index and the resulting glycemic load may be used to classify foods according to their potential to increase blood glucose. Information about glycemic index and glycemic load may be useful in diet therapy. Currently, food composition tables in Brazil do not provide data for individually analyzed carbohydrates even though some quality data are available in scientific publications. The objectives of this work were to produce and compile information about the concentration of individual carbohydrates in foods and their glycemic responses and to disseminate this information through the Brazilian Food Composition Database (TBCA-USP). The glycemic index and glycemic load of foods were evaluated in healthy individuals. Concentrations of available carbohydrates (soluble sugars and available starch) and unavailable carbohydrates (dietary fiber, resistant starch, beta-glucans, fructans) were quantified by official methods, and other national data were compiled. TBCA-USP (http://www.fcf.usp.br/tabela), which is used by professionals and the population in general, now offers both chemical and biological information for carbohydrates. (C) 2009 Elsevier Inc. Zinc is an essential nutritional component required for normal development and maintenance of immune functions. The possible effects of zinc in upregulating the host immune response during the acute and chronic phases of experimental Chagas` disease were evaluated. In young, infected and Zn-supplemented animals, higher concentrations of IFN-gamma and NO were observed. During the chronic phase, decreased concentrations of NO and IFN-gamma were found for older infected animals that received Zn supplementation. For young animals, hearts from Zn-supplemented groups displayed reduced inflammatory infiltrate, heart weight and number of amastigote burdens. For older, infected and Zn-supplemented animals amastigote nests were absent with reduced inflammatory cell infiltrate. This study identifies a potentially novel therapeutic approach that could control the parasite load during acute phase of disease, consequently preventing the deleterious, parasite-elicited responses observed during chronic phase. As part of ACIAR project ASEM/2003/052, Improving Financial Returns to Smallholder Tree Farmers in the Philippines, plantations of timber trees in Leyte Island, the Philippines were located using a systematic survey of the island. The survey was undertaken in order to compile a database of plantations which could be used to guide the planning of project activities. In addition to recording a range of qualitative and quantitative information for each plantation, the survey spatially referenced each site using a Global Positioning System (GPS) to electronic maps of the island which were held in a Geographical Information System (GIS). Microsoft Excel and Mapsource® software were used as the software links between GPS coordinates and the GIS. Mapping of farm positions was complicated by different datums being used for maps of Leyte Island and this caused GPS positions to be displaced from equivalent positions on the map. Photos of the sites were hyperlinked to their map positions in the GIS in order to assist staff to recall site characteristics.

Data describing the composition of dietary supplements are not readily available to the public health community. As a result, intake from dietary supplements is generally not considered in most dietary surveys and, hence, little is known about the significance of supplement intake in relation to total diet or disease risk. To enable a more comprehensive analysis of dietary data, a database of the composition of various dietary supplements has been compiled. Active ingredients of all dietary supplements sold in Australia are included in the Australian Register of Therapeutic Goods (ARTG), maintained by the Therapeutic Goods Administration. Products included in the database were restricted to those vitamin, mineral and other supplements identified in dietary data collected from studies conducted in southeast Queensland and New South Wales (850 supplements). Conversion factors from ingredients compounds to active elements were compiled from standard sources. No account has been made for bioavailability, consistent with current practice for food composition databases. The database can be queried by ARTG identification number, brand, product title, or a variety of other fields. Expected future developments include development of standard formulations for use when supplements are incompletely specified, and expansion of products included for more widespread use.

A dissociation between two putative measures of resource allocation skin conductance responding, and secondary task reaction time (RT), has been observed during auditory discrimination tasks. Four experiments investigated the time course of the dissociation effect with a visual discrimination task. participants were presented with circles and ellipses and instructed to count the number of longer-than-usual presentations of one shape (task-relevant) and to ignore presentations of the other shape (task-irrelevant). Concurrent with this task, participants made a speeded motor response to an auditory probe. Experiment 1 showed that skin conductance responses were larger during task-relevant stimuli than during task-irrelevant stimuli, whereas RT to probes presented at 150 ms following shape onset was slower during task-irrelevant stimuli. Experiments 2 to 4 found slower RT during task-irrelevant stimuli at probes presented at 300 ms before shape onset until 150 ms following shape onset. At probes presented 3,000 and 4,000 ms following shape onset probe RT was slower during task-relevant stimuli. The similarities between the observed time course and the so-called psychological refractory period (PRF) effect are discussed.
