The interaction of lanthanide ions with a supported bilayer lipid (1,2-dimyristoyl-sn-glycero-3-phosphatidylcholine) membrane (sBLM) was investigated by cyclic voltammetry and ac impedance spectroscopy in this paper, Lanthanide can affect the conformation of the supported bilayer lipid membrane and cause pore formation. Through the pores, Fe(CN)(6)(3) (4) can reach the electrode surface and show its redox behaviour. Furthermore the redox currents or Fe(CN)(6)(3) (4) increased with increasing concentration of lanthanides and leveled off at 1.2 muM for Eu3+. The interaction ability of three lanthanides with sBLM follows the sequence: Eu3+ > Tb3+ > La3+.

Cyclic voltammetry and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy were used to study the surface acid-base property of carboxylic acid-terminated self-assembled monolayers (SAMs). A carboxylic acid-terminated thiol, such as thioctic acid (1,2-dithiolane-3-pentanoic add), was self-assembled on gold electrodes. Electron transfer between the bulk solution and the SAM modified electrode was studied at different pH using Fe(CN)(6)(3-) as a probe. The surface pK(a) of thioctic acid was determined by cyclic voltammetry and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy to be 5.6 +/- 0.1 and 5.8 +/- 0.1, respectively. The method is compared with other methods of monolayer pK(a) measurement.

Plussian blue(PB)/Pt modified electrode Tvas studied in the CdCl2 electrolyte solution by cyclic voltammetry and in situ FTIR spectroelectrochemistry. It was found that Cadmium ion was capable of substituting the high-spin iron of PB in an electrochemically induced substitution reaction and hexacyanoferrate cadmium (CdHCF) can be formed in the PB film. But PB and CdHCF in mixture film showed their own electrochemistry properties without serious effect on each other. The mechanism of substitution reaction has been given in detail.

Ytterbium(III) and praseodymium(III) complexes of 2-carboxyethylgermanium sesquioxide (Ge-132) can hydrolyze the phosphodiester linkage of 3',5'-cyclic adenosine monophosphate (cAMP) and 3',5'-cyclic deoxyadenosine monophosphate (dcAMP). Both cAMP and dcAMP are hydrolyzed with high selectivity, yielding predominantly 3'-monophosphates. The selectivity and activity for hydrolyzing cAMP and dcAMP by lanthanide metal(III) complexes and lanthanide metal ions are compared.

The cleavage of 3',5'-cAMP, 3',5'-cGMP and 3',5'-dcAMP by lanthanides has been investigated by HPLC and H-1 NMR. Rapid cleavage of cAMP, cGMP and dcAMP by Ce(III) under air at pH 8 and 37 degrees C has been observed. Regioselective cleavage of P-O(5') bond in cAMP, cGMP and dc;aMP tu give the corresponding 3'-AMP, 3'-GMP and 3'-dAMP by lanthanide chlorides has been achieved, and 3'-AMP and 3'-GMP are cleaved to adenosine(A) and guanosine(CT) more slowly, respectively, The notable difference in reactivity between Ce(III) and the other lanthanide ions under air has also been studied. The cleavage is enhanced with the increase in the molar fraction of Ce(IV). The fast cleavage of cAMP by Ce(III) under air at pH 8 is ascribed to the resultant Ce(IV) in the reaction mixture.

A new method for electrochemically in situ conductivity measurements based on a reusable glassy carbon disc carbon fibre array double electrode is described. Using this technique and cyclic voltammetry, we have investigated the effects of the doping anion and solvent on the electrochemical properties of polypyrrole film. The electroactivity and potential dependent conductivity of polypyrrole film are strongly affected by solvent and the doping anion's solubility in the solvent, and also by the history of electrochemical treatments in different electrolyte solutions. It is very interesting that NO3-doped polypyrrole can completely keep its conducting state (doped state) at a reasonably negative potential (eg -0.8 V vs. sce) in acetonitrile solutions.

The behaviour of the electroplated copper film electrode on tin oxide/glass or glassy carbon surface was studied in potassium hydroxide medium by cyclic voltammetry and in situ transmission spectroelectrochemistry. The results indicate that the electroplated copper film electrode is similar to a copper electrode and cyclic voltammetry with this electrode affords more resolution. The anodic peaks were found to correspond successively to the adsorption of oxygen, the formation of a surface layer of Cu2O, the formation of a surface layer of Cu(OH)2 or CuO and formation of a thick multilayer film of CuO. This is the first time it has been proposed that a surface layer of Cu(OH)2 or CuO is formed from the oxidation of the surface layer of Cu2O. Similarly, a clear interpretation is presented that the cathodic peaks correspond successively to the reduction of CuO to Cu2O, the reductions of Cu2O to Cu and the soluble Cu(II) species to Cu. On the other hand, a shoulder peak related to the chemical transformation of Cu(OH)2 to CuO was first observed.

Solder constitutive models are important as they are widely used in FEA simulations to predict the lifetime of soldered assemblies. This paper briefly reviews some common constitutive laws to capture creep in solder and presents work on laws capturing both kinematic hardening and damage. Inverse analysis is used to determine constants for the kinematic hardening law which match experimental creep curves. The mesh dependence of the damage law is overcome by using volume averaging and is applied to predict the crack path in a thermal cycled resistor component

The absorption spectra. cyclic voltammetry and spectroelectrochemistry of [Ni(II)DPTAA] and [Co(II)DPTAA] (DPTAA = 6,13-diphenyldibenzo[b,i][1,4,8,11] tetraaza[14]annulene) complexes in DMF are reported in detail. The ligand oxidation is observed for [Ni(II)DPTAA] at +0.70 V vs. SCE whereas Ni2(+/+) occurs at - 1.60 V. For [Co(II)DPTAA], a ligand oxidation redox couple is seen at +0.56 V while the Co2+/+ and Co2+/3+ redox couples appear at -1.21 and +0.24 V, respectively. All observed redox couples are assigned to reversible one-electron processes on account of peak separations and scan-rate dependency. These processes were further investigated by spectroelectrochemistry for [Co(II)DPTAA]. For [Co(II)DPTAA], axial ligation of pyridine was found to shift the Co2+/3+ redox couple more negative. while the ligand oxidation was shifted to more positive potentials. From a spectrophotometric titration of [Co(II)DPTAA] with pyridine an equilibrium constant, K-f, was determined for the binding of pyridine to [Co(II)DPTAA]. This was found to be 10.2 dm(3) mol(-1), slightly lower than that of [Co(II)TAA], indicating the influence of the phenyl groups. From this value and shifts in the Co2+/3+ redox couple upon ligation, an equilibrium constant for the binding of pyridine to [Co(III)DPTAA], K'(f), was found to be 5.06 x 10(6) dm(3) mol(-1). The facile syntheses of 1,2- and 3,5-cyclic sulfite and sulfate furanoside diesters were conducted in molecular solvents and ionic liquids in the presence of immobilised morpholine. Molecular solvents and ionic liquids performed similarly with regards to overall yields. However, the use of ILs allowed for the reactions to be carried out under atmospheric conditions and showed good recyclability. Additionally, increases in product stability was achieved in ILs over organic solvents, in particular, in bis{(trifluoromethanesulfonyl)imide) and trispentafluoro-ethyltrifluorophosphate-based ionic liquids, which were also excellent media to control the hydrolysis of thionyl chloride and sulfuryl chloride.
