Perspectives on culture : meeting points and divergences

In a post-modern world of diversity, difference and melting social, political, economic and cultural boundaries, there is a fundamental tension between the preservation of cultural identity and the cultural homogenisation that defines a globalised world.

This paper reports on a collaborative, international study between researchers in Thailand, Japan and Australia which examines perceptions of conceptual differences and meeting points in the cultural views of their three communities of teachers. In doing so, it attempts to move beyond post-modernism and the reality of globalism by proposing a new methodology for facilitating intercultural understanding.

Engaging international students

Effective and meaningful student engagement is integral for enhancing student learning experience and outcomes. For international students who move beyond their cultural comfort zone and navigate through cross-border experiences, it is essential to conceptualise their engagement through not only the formal curriculum but also the informal curriculum. International student engagement should be viewed in relation to multiple interrelated dimensions. These may include their engagement with the learning content and learning process, the bonding between teachers and students, the interaction between international and domestic students and amongst international students themselves and their integration into the relevant networks, the community and the society that they are living in. These dimensions of engagement are anchored in the intersections of international student personal agency and personal experiences, educational practices, cultural boundaries and the broader social and political context shaping Australian international education.

Made in New Zealand: place and enchantment in Margaret Mahy's picture books

Margaret Mahy published over a hundred picture books from A Lion in the Meadow in 1969 to a cluster of posthumous texts. This article considers the extent to which Mahy’s picture books can be said to have been “made in New Zealand,” given that most have been illustrated by artists from other countries, particularly Britain. Mahy’s picture book narratives are, I argue, informed by values, assumptions and orientations toward the natural world which subtly but unmistakably locate protagonists in New Zealand, even when the books’ illustrations reflect British, American or Canadian geographic and cultural settings. In this sense Mahy’s picture books are transnational products, traversing national and cultural boundaries.

Tropicalia concerns the attempt of understanding of Brazil and a national identity characterized by the transience of time and space, rhizomatic action, perpetual laceration of cultural boundaries and at the same time act synchronously to instances such as policy and the social. A word created by artist Hélio Oiticica and registered by him on the National Register of Trademarks and Patents, was later used to a name the eponymous song by Caetano Veloso and also in this fertile cultural impulse at the turn of the sixties to the seventies on last century, who had the intention to make creating new spaces and simultaneously rethink the spatial cuts of Brazilian culture, encouraging them to be much more than a myth of a paradise within a lush new look of a tropical truth.

Dual origins of dairy cattle farming - evidence from a comprehensive survey of European Y-chromosomal variation

BACKGROUND: Diversity patterns of livestock species are informative to the history of agriculture and indicate uniqueness of breeds as relevant for conservation. So far, most studies on cattle have focused on mitochondrial and autosomal DNA variation. Previous studies of Y-chromosomal variation, with limited breed panels, identified two Bos taurus (taurine) haplogroups (Y1 and Y2; both composed of several haplotypes) and one Bos indicus (indicine/zebu) haplogroup (Y3), as well as a strong phylogeographic structuring of paternal lineages. METHODOLOGY AND PRINCIPAL FINDINGS: Haplogroup data were collected for 2087 animals from 138 breeds. For 111 breeds, these were resolved further by genotyping microsatellites INRA189 (10 alleles) and BM861 (2 alleles). European cattle carry exclusively taurine haplotypes, with the zebu Y-chromosomes having appreciable frequencies in Southwest Asian populations. Y1 is predominant in northern and north-western Europe, but is also observed in several Iberian breeds, as well as in Southwest Asia. A single Y1 haplotype is predominant in north-central Europe and a single Y2 haplotype in central Europe. In contrast, we found both Y1 and Y2 haplotypes in Britain, the Nordic region and Russia, with the highest Y-chromosomal diversity seen in the Iberian Peninsula. CONCLUSIONS: We propose that the homogeneous Y1 and Y2 regions reflect founder effects associated with the development and expansion of two groups of dairy cattle, the pied or red breeds from the North Sea and Baltic coasts and the spotted, yellow or brown breeds from Switzerland, respectively. The present Y1-Y2 contrast in central Europe coincides with historic, linguistic, religious and cultural boundaries.

Mobilities, Entanglements and Transformations in Neolithic societies on the Swiss Plateau (3900-3500 BC)

The material culture of Neolithic settlements – especially pottery – was often taken as key argument to distinguish „Neolithic cultures“ like Cortaillod, Pfyn, Michelsberg, Munzingen, NMB, Altheim. „Foreign influences“ in these pottery styles point to complex entanglements between social groups and highly mobile people, bluring the supposed cultural boundaries. The two PhD-projects aim at a critical revision of former notions of „culture“ by focussion on similarities and differences in pottery practecies of dedrodated key sites on the Swiss Plateau (3900 -3500 BC).

Material culture entanglements of early wetland sites in central Switzerland (4300-3850 BC)

In central Switzerland, the earliest wetland settlements with definitely attested finds and features date into the second half of the 5th millennium BC. Combining the information they have yielded with that from dryland sites, we can construct a detailed picture of material culture at the turn of the 5th to the 4th millennium. On this basis, the definition of clearly delimited archaeological cultures seems questionable, not only from a theoretical point of view. Similiarities and differences in the pottery show small-scale regional units defined via vessel forms as well as stylistic and technological aspects. Yet there are also inter-regional connections: roundbased vessels with opposing handles are typical for Lake Zurich, central and western Switzerland, the Valais and the central Rhône valley. In turn, ‘foreign‘ types such as shoulder-band beakers indicate regular connections between groups living in central Switzerland and those in Alsace and southern Germany. Are these beakers ‘imports‘ or locally produced items (‘imitations‘) indicating the adoption of ‘foreign‘ vessel types and concepts? This and similar material culture phenomena result in a picture of many material entanglements and problematise the kinds of relationships and mobility which might have existed. Our paper addresses these questions and discusses how and whether these interwoven connections changed in the early 4th millennium.

Global flows of foreign talent: Identity anxieties in Singapore's ethnoscape

This paper draws on Appadurai's (1996) concept of ethnoscapes — the global flow of people or what has become increasingly popularized as the global flow of talent. Singapore has initiated a foreign talent policy to compete for a global pool of talent to make up for its shortfall of indigenous work-force. The rationale for recruiting foreign talent is informed by a nationalist competitive ideology to sustain Singapore in the new knowledge-based economy. This paper examines the competing and dissenting discourses surrounding the foreign talent policy. It argues that the mobility of migratory flow has transformative and disruptive effects at the level of culture and the identity landscape of Singapore, where its discursive cultural boundaries are drawn according to a nationalist framework. Drawing on theories and concepts of ‘diaspora’, ‘hybridity’, and ‘third space’, these are the political and cultural issues that this paper attempts to tease out. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Challenging market conventions:supermarket diversification and consumer resistance in children's apparel purchases

Purpose – In the UK, while fashion apparel purchasing is available to the majority of consumers, the main supermarkets seem – rather against the odds and market conventions – to have created a new, socially-acceptable and legitimate, apparel market offer for young children. This study aims to explore parental purchasing decisions on apparel for young children (below ten years old) focusing on supermarket diversification into apparel and consumer resistance against other traditional brands. Design/methodology/approach – Data collection adopted a qualitative research mode: using semi-structured interviews in two locations (Cornwall Please correct and check againand Glasgow), each with a Tesco and ASDA located outside towns. A total of 59 parents participated in the study. Interviews took place in the stores, with parents seen buying children fashion apparel. Findings – The findings suggest that decisions are based not only on functionality (e.g. convenience, value for money, refund policy), but also on intuitive factors (e.g. style, image, quality) as well as broader processes of consumption from parental boundary setting (e.g. curbing premature adultness). Positive consumer resistance is leading to a re-drawing of the cultural boundaries of fashion. In some cases, concerns are expressed regarding items that seem too adult-like or otherwise not as children's apparel should be. Practical implications – The paper highlights the increasing importance of browsing as a modern choice practice (e.g. planned impulse buying, sanctuary of social activity). Particular attention is given to explaining why consumers positively resist buying from traditional label providers and voluntarily choose supermarket clothing ranges without any concerns over their children wearing such garments. Originality/value – The paper shows that supermarket shopping for children's apparel is now firmly part of UK consumption habits and choice. The findings provide theoretical insights into the significance of challenging market conventions, parental cultural boundary setting and positive resistance behaviour.

Canções de fogo: a apreensão de saberes através da performance da escuta no contexto da União do Vegetal

O ritual onde se utiliza a cocção conhecida por ayahuasca vem sendo ressignificado em contextos urbanos há mais de oito décadas, sobretudo após sua expansão iniciada pelos movimentos organizados. Essa experiência derivante dos povos da floresta amazônica, vem ultrapassando tanto fronteiras geográficas como culturais, sendo constantemente reinventada por diferentes agentes. Contemporaneamente, o fenômeno abarca indivíduos provenientes de várias partes do mundo incorporando legados doutrinários de mestres originários da América Latina. A linha doutrinária conhecida por União do Vegetal - UDV, na qual este trabalho se centra, vem ganhando espaço entre os circuitos europeus neo esotéricos. Atualmente o ritual é vivenciado por mais de 18 mil pessoas espalhadas pelo globo e tem como característica, após a ingestão da cocção, a utilização da música como uma das ferramentas mediadoras para a apreensão dos princípios doutrinários. Usualmente os mestres da UDV têm como característica a utilização de fonogramas de variadas categorias musicais que adquirem uma dimensão simbólica e funcional no momento do ritual. A comunidade estabelecida em Portugal - foco desta tese – e as comunidades digitais Musincante e Músicas do Alto, permitiram-me perceber, através do trabalho de campo e de observação participante, elementos constitutivos que abrangem toda a comunidade da UDV. O enfoque parte da perspectiva de observar essa doutrina como um lugar de conhecimento sistematizado e formal. No sentido de compreender os processos de construção desse saber, foi verificado o protagonismo do ato da escuta como elemento central para a apreensão da doutrina. Neste sentido, esta tese adota o conceito de performance da escuta como meio de explorar as formas como o indivíduo e o coletivo absorvem um saber doutrinário a partir da música e de como esta assume o papel de mediadora dos saberes transmitidos no contexto da UDV e de manutenção deste conhecimento num contexto extra ritual.

Regionalismos léxicos y paremiológicos en la narrativa de Jorge Amado: aspectos sociolingüístico y antropológico

The work of Jorge Amado collects and processes relevant aspects of Brazilian miscegenation and allows discussion on various issues relating to the cultural productions of the country. If on the one hand the racial mixture can be seen as the result of an harmonious process, as is traditional Brazilian thought that comes from XVIII century, on the other hand it portrays the customs of Bahian society at different times, mixing the humorous tone to the optimistic view of the world. As for the miscegenation, reality of the Bahian people, as of all Brazil, can also be analyzed in their heterogeneity, for whom observes that, in the end, the crossing of economic, social and cultural boundaries have been, in many cases, quite problematic. The aim of this work is to make a journey into reality, past and present in Brazil, to understand the lexical regionalisms present in each work; it is important to understand the history of slavery, indigenous groups and the relation that the white man had with this world. All that enormous database of spoken language (a true linguistic laboratory) served and is serving to describe the Portuguese in Brazil in its regional, ethnic and social varieties. Aborda los lineamientos centrales de enfoques gerenciales tales como el empowerment, la reingeniería, la calidad total y el benchmarking.Además, se reconoce que los ambientes internacionales han ido moldeando las gerencias de tal forma que hoy día se necesitan gerentes multiculturales que puedan motivar a personas de diferentes culturas así como ser aceptados por estas. Esos gerentes deben ser capaces de traspasar las barreras culturales y guiar a las empresas hacia la consecución de sus metas.Abstract:This article intends to focus on the importance of the approach and managerial styles in an international competitive context. It states the central guidelines of the managerial approaches such as the empowerment, the re-engineering, the total quality and benchmarking.This document also states that the international or foreign environments have been modeling management. Therefore, nowadays it is necessary to count on multicultural manages who are able to motivate other people from different cultures, as well as to be accepted from these cultural groups. These managers must be able to cross cultural boundaries and guide the companies to reach their goals.

Pushing cultural competence boundaries in nutrition and dietetics training

A health workforce ready for safe practice is a government priority, and particularly critical to support indigenous communities closing ‘the gap’. Increased pressure exists on dietetic training programs for quality placements, with fewer opportunities for immersion in Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities to demonstrate cultural competence. In 2012, Queensland University of Technology established a partnership with Apunipima Cape York Health Council with 56 weeks of dietetic placement for 8 students provided to achieve these aims. Clinical practice in Community Public Health Nutrition (CPHN) was structured in a standard 6 week placement, with Individual Case Management (ICM) and Foodservice Management (FSM) integrated across 8 weeks (4 each), with an additional 2 weeks ICM prior in a metropolitan indigenous health service. Students transitioned from urban to rural then remote sites, with new web-based technologies used for support. Strong learning opportunities were provided, with CPHN projects in antenatal and child health, FSM on standardisation of procedures in a 22 bed health facility, and ICM exposing students to a variety of cases via hospital in/outpatients, general clinics and remote community outreach. Supervisor focus group evaluation was positive, with CPHN and FSM enhancing capacity of service. Student focus group evaluation revealed placements exceeded expectations, with rating high, and strong confidence in cultural competence described. Students debriefed final and third year cohorts on their experiences, with increased awareness and enthusiasm for work with indigenous communities indicated by groups. With the success of this partnership, placements are continuing 2013, and new boundaries in dietetic training established.
