Macrokinetic models, namly the modified Avrami, Ozawa and Zibicki models, were applied to study the non-isothermal melt crystallization process of PET/PEN/DBS blends by DSC measurement. The modified Avrami model was found to describe the experimental data fairly well. With the cooling rates in the range from 5 to 20 K/min, Ozawa model could be well used to describe the early stages of crystallization. However, Ozawa model did not fit the polymer blends during the late stages of crystallization, because it ignored the influence of secondary crystallization. The crystallization ability of the blends decreases with increasing the DBS content from analysis by using Ziabicki kinetic model, which is similar to the results based on calculation of the effective energy barrier of the blends.

The nonisothermal crystallization behavior of poly (L-lactide)-poly(ethylene glycol) ( PLLA-PEG) diblock copolymer was studied by means of real-time WAXD, DSC and POM, and Ozawa equation was used to analyze the kinetics of PLLA-PEG under nonisothermal crystallization conditions. During the crystallization of the high-T-m block (PLLA), the low-T-m block (PEG) acts as a noncrystalline diluent, and the crystallization behavior of PLLA obeys the Ozawa theory. When the PEG block begins to crystallize, the PLLA phase is always partially solidified and the presence of the spherulitic microstructure of PLLA profoundly restricts its crystallization behavior, which results in that the overall crystallization process does not obey the Ozawa equation. Furthermore, the study of the crystalline morphology of PLLA-PEG at different cooling rates indicates that when the cooling rate is from low to high, the crystalline morphology undergoes a transformation from the ring-banded spherulites to the typical Maltese cross spherulites, which experiences the mixed crystalline morphologies of ring-banded and typical Maltese cross spherulites, and the spherulitic size becomes smaller.

The effect of nucleating agents on the crystallization behavior of poly(3-hydroxybutyrate-co-3-hydroxyvalerate) (PHBV) was studied. A differential scanning calorimeter was used to monitor the energy of the crystallization process from the melt and melting behavior. During the crystallization process from the melt, nucleating agent led to an increase in crystallization temperature (T-c) of PHBV compared with that for plain PHBV (without nucleating agent). The melting temperature of PHBV changed little with addition of nucleating agent. However, the areas of two melting peaks changed considerably with added nucleating agent. During isothermal crystallization, dependence of the relative degree of crystallization on time was described by the Avrami equation. The addition of nucleating agent caused an increase in the overall crystallization rate of PHBV, but did not influence the mechanism of nucleation and growth of the PHB crystals. The equilibrium melting temperature of PHBV was determined as 187degreesC. Analysis of kinetic data according to nucleation theories showed that the increase in crystallization rate of PHBV in the composite is due to the decrease in surface energy of the extremity surface.

Isothermal and nonisothermal crystallization kinetics of nylon-46 were investigated with differential scanning calorimetry. The equilibrium melting enthalpy and the equilibrium melting temperature of nylon-46 were determined to be 155.58 J/g and 307.10 degreesC, respectively. The isothermal crystallization process was described by the Avrami equation. The lateral surface free energy and the end surface free energy of nylon-46 were calculated to be 8.28 and 138.54 erg/cm(2), respectively. The work of chain folding was determined to be 7.12 kcal/mol. The activation energies were determined to be 568.25 and 337.80 kJ/mol for isothermal and nonisothermal crystallization, respectively. A convenient method was applied to describe the nonisothermal crystallization kinetics of nylon-46 by a combination of the Avrami and Ozawa equations.

Nonisothermal crystallization and melting behavior of poly(3-hydroxybutyrate) (PHB) and maleated PHB were investigated by differential scanning calorimetry using various cooling rates. The results show that the crystallization behavior of maleated PHB from the melt greatly depends on cooling rates and its degree of grafting. With the increase in cooling rate, the crystallization process for PHB and maleated PHB begins at lower temperature. For maleated PHB, the introduction of maleic anhydride group hinders its crystallization, causing crystallization and nucleation rates to decrease, and crystallite size distribution becomes wider. The Avrami analysis, modified by Jeziorny, was used to describe the nonisothermal crystallization of PHB and maleated PHB. Double melting peaks for maleated PHB were observed, which was caused by recrystallization during the heating process.

The overall isothermal crystallization kinetics and melting behavior of poly(beta-hydroxybutyrate) (PHB) and maleated PHB with different graft degree were studied by using differential scanning calorimetry (DSC). The Avrami analysis indicates that the introduction of maleic anhydride results in the decrease in the overall crystallization rate of PHB, but does not affect its nucleation mechanism and geometry of crystal growth. The activation energy of the overall crystallization process increases with the increase in graft degree. The phenomenon of multiple melting endotherms is observed, which results from melting and recrystallization during the DSC heating run.

Analyses of the isothermal and nonisothermal melt kinetics for syndiotactic polystyrene have been performed with differential scanning calorimetry, and several kinetic analyses have been used to describe the crystallization process. The regime II-->III transition, at a crystallization temperature of 239degrees, is found. The values of the nucleation parameter K-g for regimes II and III are estimated. The lateral-surface free energy, sigma = 3.24 erg cm(-2), the fold-surface free energy, sigma(e) = 52.3 +/- 4.2 erg cm(-2), and the average work of chain folding, q = 4.49 +/- 0.38 kcal/mol, are determined with the (040) plane assumed to be the growth plane. The observed crystallization characteristics of syndiotactic polystyrene are compared with those of isotactic polystyrene. The activation energies of isothermal and nonisothermal melt crystallization are determined to be DeltaE = -830.7 kJ/mol and DeltaE = -315.9 kJ/mol, respectively.

Isothermal and non-isothermal crystallization kinetics of three metallocene-catalysed short-chain-branched polyethylene (SCBPE) fractions with different degree of branching were investigated by using differential scanning calorimetry (DSC). Narrow molecular weight fractions (M-w = 20,000 and M-w/M-n < 1.15) are used and the degree of branching (CH3 per 1000C) are 1.6, 10.4, 40 respectively. The regime I - II transition temperature are 119.8C, 115.9 degreesC, 113.3 degreesC with the decreasing of degree of branching. Increasing the branch content decreases the rate of secondary nucleation, i,relative to the rate of surface spreading and so increases the range of supercooling over which regime I exists. The rate of bulk crystallization for both isothermal and non-isothermal crystallization decreases with the increasing of degree of branching. Both Ozawa Equation and Kissinger Equation are invalid for non-isothermal crystallization kinetics of SCBPE fractions, that means the effects of the branched chain on crystallization process are more complex than expected.

The isothermal crystallization kinetics of poly(ethylene oxide) (PEO) block in two poly(ethylene terephthalate) (PET)-PEO segmented copolymers was studied with differential scanning calorimetry. The Avrami equation failed to describe the overall crystallization process, but a modified Avrami equation, the Q equation, did. The crystallizability of the PET block and the different lengths of the PEO block exerted strong influences on the crystallization process, the crystallinity, and time final morphology of the PEO block. The mechanism of nucleation and the growth dimension of the PEG block were different because of the crystallizability of time PET block and the compositional heterogeneity. The crystallization of the PEO block was physically constrained by the microstructure of time PET crystalline phase, which resulted in a lower crystallization rate. However, this influence became weak with the increase in the soft-block length. (C) 2000 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.

The miscibility, spherulite growth kinetics, and morphology of binary blends of poly(beta-hydroxybutyrate) (PHB) and poly(methyl acrylate) (PMA) were studied with differential scanning calorimetry, optical microscopy, and small-angle X-ray scattering (SAXS). As the PMA content increases in the blends, the glass-transition temperature and cold-crystallization temperature increase, but the melting point decreases. The interaction parameter between PHB and PMA, obtained from an analysis of the equilibrium-melting-point depression, is -0.074. The presence of an amorphous PMA component results in a reduction in the rate of spherulite growth of PRE. The radial growth rates of spherulites were analyzed with the Lauritzen-Hoffman model. The spherulites of PHB were volume-filled, indicating the inclusion of PMA within the spherulites. The long period obtained from SAXS increases with increased PMA content, implying that the amorphous PMA is entrapped in the interlamellar region of PHB during the crystallization process of PHB. All the results presented show that PHB and PMA are miscible in the melt. (C) 2000 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.

The nonisothermal crystallization behavior of ethylene terephthalate-ethylene oxide segmented copolymers has been studied by means of differential scanning calorimetry (DSC). The kinetics of ET-EO segmented copolymer under nonisothermal crystallization conditions has been analyzed by the Ozawa equation. During the crystallization of the high-T-m segments (PET), the low-T-m segments (PEO) act as a noncrystalline diluent, the crystallization behavior of PET obeys the Ozawa theory. When the PEO segments begin to crystallize, the PET phase is always partially solidified and the presence of the spherulitic microstructure of PET profoundly influences the crystallization behavior, which results in that the overall crystallization process does not obey the Ozawa equation. Isothermal and nonisothermal crystallization behavior for PEKK(T) was studied using differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), and electron diffraction (ED). In the isothermal crystallization process, the Avrami parameters obtained were n = 2.33-2.69, which shows crystal growth of two-dimensional extensions consistent with our observations by TEM. The lamellar thickness increases with the crystallization temperature of PEKK(T) crystallized isothermally from the melt. However, for the nonisothermal crystallization of PEKK(T), the results from the modified Avrami analysis show two different crystallization processes. Avrami exponents n(1) = 3.61-5.30, obtained from the primary crystallization process, are much bigger than are the secondary n(2) = 2.26-3.04 and confirmed by the observation of the spherulite morphology. PEKK(T) crystallized isothermally from the melt possesses the same crystal structure (Form I) as that from nonisothermal melt crystallization. The results from TEM observation show that the spherulite radius decreases with an increasing cooling rate. (C) 2001 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.

The crystallization behavior of PHBV, poly(beta -hydroxybutyrate-co-beta -hydrxyvalerate), with nucleating agents under isothermal conditions was investigated. A differential scanning calorimeter was used to monitor the crystallization process from the melt. During isothermal crystallization, the dependence of relative degree of crystallinity on time was described by the Avrami equation. It has been shown that the addition of BN and Tale causes a considerable increase in the overall crystallization rate of PHBV but does not influence the Avrami exponent n, mechanism of nucleation and spherulite growth mode of PHBV. A little of nucleating agent will increase the crystallization rate and decrease the fold surface free energy sigma (e), remarkably. The effect of BN is more significant than that of Talc.

The nonisothermal crystallization behavior of polyethylene oxide (PEO) in poly(ethylene terephthalate)poly(ethylene oxide) (PETPEO) segmented copolymer and PEO homopolymer has been studied by means of differential scanning calorimetry, as well as transmission electron microscope. The kinetics of PEO in copolymer and PEO homopolymer under nonisothermal crystallization condition has been analyzed by Ozawa equation. The results show that Ozawa equation only describes the crystallization behavior of PEO-6000 homopolymer successfully, but fails to describe the whole crystallization process of PEO in copolymer because the secondary crystallization in the later stage could not be neglected. Due to the constraint of PET segments imposed on the PEO segments, a distinct two stage of crystallization of PEO in copolymer has been investigated by using Avrami equation modified by Jeziorny to deal with the nonisothermal crystallization data. In the case of PEO-6000 homopolymer, good linear relation for the whole crystallization process is obtained owing to the secondary crystallization does not occur under our experimental condition. The nonisothermal crystallization behavior of Ethylene Terephthalate-Ethylene Oxide (ET-EO) segmented copolymers has been studied with the use of differential scanning calorimetry (DSC). The kinetics of PEO in ET-EO segmented copolymer under nonisothermal crystallization conditions has been analyzed with the Ozawa equation. The results show that there is no agreement with Ozawa's theoretical predictions in the whole crystallization process owing to the constraint of ET segments imposed on the EO segments. A distinct two-crystallization process has been investigated by using the Avrami equation modified by Jeziorny to deal with the nonisothermal crystallization data. The value of the Avrami exponent n is independent of the length of soft segments. However, the crystallization rate is sensitive to the length of soft segments. The longer the soft segments, the faster the crystallization will be.
