In this paper we report here new considerations about the relationship between the mass and charge variations (m/z relationship) in underpotential deposition (UPD), bulk deposition and also in the H(2)Se formation reaction. Nanogravimetric experiments were able to show the adsorption of H(2)SeO(3) on the AuO surface prior to the voltammetric sweep and that, after the AuO reduction, 0.40 monolayer of H(2)SeO(3) remains adsorbed on the newly reduced Au surface, which was enough to gives rise to the UPD layer. The UPD results indicate that the maximum coverage with Se(ads) on polycrystalline gold surface corresponds to approximately 0.40 monolayer, in good agreement with charge density results. The cyclic voltammetry experiments demonstrated that the amount of bulk Se obtained during the potential scan to approximately 2 Se monolayers, which was further confirmed by electrochemical quartz crystal microbalance (EQCM) measurements that pointed out a mass variation corresponding of 3 monolayers of Se. In addition, the Se thin films were obtained by chronoamperometric experiments, where the Au electrode was polarized at +0.10V during different times in 1.0 M H(2)SO(4) + 1.0 mM SeO(2). The topologic aspects of the electrodeposits were observed in Atomic Force Microscope (AFM) measurements. Finally, in highly negative potential polarizations, the H(2)Se formation was analyzed by voltammetric and nanogravimetric measurements. These finding brings a new light on the selenium electrodeposition and point up to a proposed electrochemical model for molecule controlled surface engineering. (c) 2009 Elsevier Ltd. This article compares two Information and Communication Technologies (ICTs) used in the Faculty of Arts, Deakin University Australia, and investigates the relationships between technology, pedagogy and key issues in the teaching and practice of public relations, in a media studies context. The online role-play ‘Save Wallaby Forest’ and the e-simulation ‘PRessure Point! Getting Framed (GF), in their different ways, afford learning  environments with capabilities that present public relations and media students with opportunities to discover a critical consciousness, break out of naturalised world-views, and explore alternative approaches to organisational communication. Furthermore, they present students with complex ethical issues to investigate based around the idea that media industries are powerful discursive producers and reproducers of social norms, values and beliefs which in turn shape notions of identity and influence the formation of public opinion in society (Fairclough 1999; Habermas 1995). This article explores the intersections and differences between these distinct ICTs in their relationships to a constructivist learning approach and ethical questions about how public relations both produces and reproduces world views through practice. This interacting nexus – between technology, pedagogy and theme – is significant because “what happens in the learning process” relates to the learning outcome and therefore has the potential to develop holistic reflexivity in studies of public relations (Laurillard 2003, p.42).

Venoms from Bothrops jararacussu, Bothrops asper, Bothrops atrox, Bothrops pirajai, Bothrops moojeni, Bothrops alternatus and Bothrops (Bothriopsis) bilineata were fractionated using a simplified procedure based on ion-exchange chromatography on CM-Sepharose at pH 8.0 or reverse phase HPLC. The resulting elution profiles showed important differences in the myotoxin content of these venoms. The venoms from B. alternatus, B. atrox and Bothriopsis bilineata did not contain the major myotoxin found in the other venoms. The amino acid sequence of the first 50 residues of the N-terminal region of the PLA(2)-like myotoxins showed a homology of 90-96% with other bothropic myotoxins. All of the myotoxins isolated induced rat paw edema, increased the level of plasma creatine kinase and produced myonecrosis together with polymorphonuclear cell infiltration.

The chromosomes of 173 specimens representing eleven species of the Tropidurus torquatus group, from 33 localities in Brazil, were analysed after Giemsa staining, C-banding, NORs, and replication banding techniques. A karyotype with 2n = 36, including 12 macrochromosomes and 24 microchromosomes (12 M + 24 m), and sex determination of the XY:XX type were found in Tropidurus cocorobensis, T. erythrocephalus, T. etheridgei, T. hispidus, T. hygomi, T. montanus, T. mucujensis, T. oreadicus, and T. torquatus. The two other species, T. itambere and T. psammonastes, presented 2n = 36 (12 M + 23 m) karyotype only in females while males had 2n = 35 (12 M + 23 m), due to the sex determination of the X(1)X(2)Y:X(1)X(1)X(2)X(2) type. Other interspecific differences as well as some intraspecific variation regarding the NORs and C-banding patterns have been observed, mainly in the microchromosome set. on the contrary, the macrochromosomes were highly conservative. Although consistent karyotypic diversity occurred in the torquatus group, the cytogenetic data obtained up to now did not allow us to clarify the phylogenetic relationships of the species. Nevertheless, the geographical distribution of the distinct cytotypes in T. hispidus and T. torquatus suggested that more than one species might be involved in each case.

In the present study, the karyotype of three species (nine populations) of the Callichthyinae subfamily were investigated with the objective of better understanding the pattern of relationship among the genera that compose the subfamily. Among the four populations of Callichthys callichthys studied, two showed 2n=56 chromosomes and two 2n=58 chromosomes. Up to eight additional microchromosomes were observed in the sample from Marilia. The three populations of Hoplosternum littorale displayed the same number of chromosomes, 2n=60, and karyotypic constitution, 6M+2SM+52A. The two populations of Megalechis personata showed 2n=62 chromosomes and similar karyotypic formulae, 8M+54A and 6M+2SM+54A. Terminal Ag-NORs were found in one chromosome pair of C. callichthys, H. littorale, and M. personata from Itiquira, and in two pairs in M. personata from Rio Branco. The populations of C. callichthys showed C-band positive segments in centromeric and pericentromeric position and the populations of H. littorale and M. personata exhibited C-band positive segments in centromeric and/or interstitial position. Contrarily to the extensive chromosome rearrangements verified in the Corydoradinae subfamily, in the Callichthyinae subfamily a small number of changes seems to have occurred in its karyotypic evolution.
