The design of a compact planar antenna featuring ultra wideband performance and simultaneous signal rejection in the 4-6 GHz band, assigned for IEEE802.11a and HIPERLAN/2, is presented. The design is demonstrated assuming RT6010LM substrate with a relative dielectric constant of 10.2 and thickness of 0.64 mm. The presented results show that the designed antenna of 27 mm * 20 mm dimensions has a bandwidth from 2.7 GHz to more than 10 GHz excluding the rejection band. The antenna features near omnidirectional characteristics and good radiation efficiency.

Indoor localization systems in nowadays is a huge area of interest not only at academic but also at industry and commercial level. The correct location in these systems is strongly influenced by antennas performance which can provide several gains, bandwidths, polarizations and radiation patterns, due to large variety of antennas types and formats. This paper presents the design, manufacture and measurement of a compact microstrip antenna, for a 2.4 GHZ frequency band, enhanced with the use of Electromagnetic Band-Gap (EBG) structures, which improve the electromagnetic behavior of the conventional antennas. The microstrip antenna with an EBG structure integrated allows an improvement of the location system performance in about 25% to 30% relatively to a conventional microstrip antenna.

The design of an ultra-wideband planar tapered slot antenna for use in a circular cylindrical microwave imaging system is pre-sented. The antenna was designed assuming high dielectric substrate material Rogers RT6010LM to achieve its compact size. The developed antenna element (50 X 50 mm(2)) features a 10-dB return loss bandwidth from 2.75 GHz to more than 11 GHz. The gain of the antenna is between 3.5 and 9.4 dBi over the 3-10 GHz band. The experimental tests showed that the manufactured antenna element supports transmission of narrow pulses with negligible distortions, as required in the microwave imaging system. In this paper, a novel design procedure for designing a compact UWB antipodal Vivaldi antenna is presented. The antenna operates over the UWB frequency, band from 3.1 to more than 10.6 GHz. Its measured far-field radiation is directive and its peak gain is 10.2 dBi in the specified band. The antenna pulse response shows negligible distortion, indicating that it can be useful in a precision ranging and imaging instrumentation. (c) 2006 Wiley Periodicals, Inc.

A compact ultra-wideband (UWB) printed slot antenna is described, suitable for integration with the printed circuit board (PCB) of a wireless, universal, serial-bus dongle. The design comprises of a near-rectangular slot fed by a coplanar waveguide (CPW) printed on a PCB of size 20 × 30 mm2. It has a large bandwidth covering the 3.1–10.6 GHz UWB band, with omnidirectional radiation patterns. Further, a notched band centered at 5.45 GHz wireless local area network bands is obtained within the wide bandwidth by inserting a narrow slot inside the tuning stub. Details of the antenna design are described, and the experimental results of the constructed prototype are presented. The time domain studies on the antenna shows a linear phase response throughout the band except at the notched frequency. The transient analysis of the antenna indicates very little pulse distortion confirming its suitability for high speed wireless connectivity.

This paper proposes a possible implementation of a compact printed monopole antenna, useful to operate in UMTS and WLAN bands. In order to accomplish that, a miniaturization technique based on the application of chip inductors is used in conjunction with frequency reconfiguration capability. The chip inductors change the impedance response of the monopole, allowing to reduce the resonant frequency. In order to be able to operate the antenna in these two different frequencies, an antenna reconfiguration technique based on PIN diodes is applied. This procedure allows the change of the active form of the antenna leading to a shift in the resonant frequency. The prototype measurements show good agreement with the simulation results.

Design equations are presented for calculating the resonance frequencies for a compact dual frequency arrow-shaped microstrip antenna. This provides a fast and simple way to predict the resonant frequencies of the antenna. The antenna is also analyzed using the IE3D simulation package. The theoretical predictions are found to be very close to the IE3D results and thus establish the validity of the design formulae
