Growth of Perna viridis L. inhabiting Moheshkhali jetty of the channel was studied for one year from November, 1990 to October, 1991. The mussel attained 88.12mm±14.69 in length within 12 months with a mean growth rate of 7.34mrnlmonth. Employing von Bertalanffy's growth equation it was found that P. viridis can be 88.43mm, 114.69mm and 121.9lmm at the age of 1, 2 and 3 year respectively. The highest growth rate was recorded during November-April, coinciding with the maximum abundance of phytoplankton and the greatest salinity. The maximum growth rate (99.38%) was recorded at an early stage and was followed by a sharp decline to 4.47%. The growth pattern of P. viridis fitted well with the von Bertalanffy's growth equation.

Clarias batrachus (Linn.), a common freshwater cat fish of Bhima River, has high economic value and considerable fishery importance. The length-weight relationship in the logarithmic way for this fish can be written as: Log W = 4.503717819 + 2.70681765 Log L. This is close to the cubic law indicating the isometric growth of the fish in its natural habitat. The correlation coefficient (r) was found to be 0.9824 which showed a good relationship between the two parameters.

The effects of salinity variations on the survival of Martesia striata from Cochin harbour are presented. It is observed that at least a few of the animals survive the low saline conditions during monsoon. Laboratory experiments showed the lethal salinity as 6‰ when animals acclimatised in 34‰ were subjected to abrupt changes in salinity. But acclimatisation to 17‰ salinity showed a downward shift in the lethal salinity to 4‰. The present observations indicate that M. striata is euryhaline arid the extent of tolerance to lower salinities depends on the degree of acclimatisation.

Marked changes were observed in different chemical constituents of C. batrachus during starvation. The N and protein fractions showed a definite pattern of variations. The highest values of these were recorded on 10th day of starvation and thereafter values declined gradually. On the other hand, the acid soluble phosphorus exhibited a reverse trend, increasing gradually from the first to the 30th day of starvation. These changes have been attributed mainly to the energy and metabolic demands of the starving fish.

Various physical properties (viscosity, fluidity, surface tension and specific gravity) have been determined for muscle lipids of Ophicephalus striatus and Clarias batrachus. Results are presented and the methods used in determination noted. The physical parameters studied are found to be species-specific.

The toxicity of Croton tiglium seed is very effective in the eradication of most of the aquatic fauna except a few species of hard shelled crustaceans such as crabs and prawns which are resistant to even very high concentrations of it. Its toxicity ranged between 0.4 and 2.2 p.p.m. for different species of fishes. Application of homogenized C. tiglium seed at the rate of 10 kg/ha (0.5 m depth) is found effective for the eradication of aquatic pests and predators of fish farms. While its toxicity lasts for 5-8 days in still water ponds, it is only for 1-3 days in tidal ponds with frequent replenishment of water. This method is thus most useful for the initial preparation of the ponds for pisciculture.

Tilapia nilotica is commercially very important throughout the Ethiopian region including the major rivers in West Africa, the Chad basin, the Nile and its associated lakes. The Tilapia fishery of Lake Rudolf is at present small, but potentially important, particularly on the eastern shores of the lake where fishing intensity is low. Preliminary results from observations on the feeding of Tilapia nilotica in Lake Rudolf are presented. The fish exhibit a regular diurnal feeding rhythm, commencing between 05.00 hours and 08.00 hours and ceasing between 14.00 hours and 18.00 hours. The largest fish appear to feed longer. Quantitative estimates of the daily food intake indicate less material to be ingested than by populations in other lakes. The lysis of algae, intestinal pH and food material are also investigated.

The phytoremediation of triazophos (O, O-diethyl-O-(1-phenyl-1, 2, 4-triazole-3-base) sulfur phosphate, TAP) by Canna indica Linn. in a hydroponic system was studied. After 21 d of exposure, the removal kinetic constant (K) of TAP was 0.0229-0.0339 d(-1) and the removal percentage of TAP was 41-55% in the plant system and the K and removal percentage of TAP were about 0.002 d(-1) and 1%, respectively, in darkness and disinfected control. However, the K and removal percentage of TAP were 0.006 d(-1) and approximately 11%, respectively, in the treatment with eluate from the media of constructed wetland. The contribution of plant to the remediation of TAP was 74% and C. indica played the most important role in the hydroponic system. Under the stress of TAP and without inorganic phosphorus nutrient, the activity of phosphatase in the plant system increased and phytodegradation was observed. The production and release of phosphatase is seen as the key mechanism for C. indica to degrade TAP. C. indica, which showed the potential of phytoremediation of TAP, and is commonly used in constructed wetland, so the technique of phytoremediation of TAP from contaminated water can be developed with the combination of constructed wetland.

The effects of cadmium (Cd2+) on growth status, chlorophyll (Chl) content, photochemical efficiency, and photosynthetic intensity were studied on Canna indica Linn. Plant specimens that were produced from a constructed wetland and precultivated hydroponically in 20 L of 1/10 Hoagland solution under greenhouse conditions for I week were exposed to cadmium in concentrations of 0, 0.4, 0.8, 1.6 and 3.2 mg L- Cd2+, respectively. The results show that leaves were injured in the Cd2+ solution by the third day of exposure and the injury became more serious with an increase in the applied heavy metal. Under 3.2 mg L-1 Cd2+ treatment, growth retardation, the decrease of chlorophyll content from 0.70 to 0.43 mg g(-1) FW, and a decrease in Chl a/b ratio from 2.0 to 1.2 were observed. Chl a was more sensitive than Chl b to Cd2+ stress. The decrease was the same with photochemical efficiency. Photosynthetic intensity decreased by 13.3% from 1.5X10(4) mumol m(-2)s(-1) CO2 in control to 1.3x10(4) mumol m(2)s(-1) CO2 in the treatment of 3.2 mg L-1. Because Canna species are used in heavy metal phytoremediation, these results show that C. indica can tolerate 0.4 to 0.8 mg L-1 Cd2+. Therefore, it is a potential species for phytoremediation of cadmium with some limitations only at higher concentrations.
