In the scattering analysis of a circular cylindrical structure, the impedance boundary condition (IBC) can approximate and simplify the perfect electric conductor (PEC) boundary condition. The circular cylinder problem can be solved with modal methods but they require a large number of terms when the cylinder radius is large in terms of the wave length. The uniform theory of diffraction (UTD) [1] is commonly used to overcome this issue. The two-dimensional problem of scattering on a circular cylinder covered by a dielectric layer has been analyzed by [2]–[5], but their solutions either do not consider oblique incidence, fail on the transition region or use a constant surface impedance.

For small or medium size conformal array antennas in terms of the wave length, modal solutions in spectral domain for mutual coupling analysis are convenient for canonical shapes such as circular cylinder [1] or sphere [2], but as the antenna dimensions increase a large number of terms are necessary. For large structures the uniform theory of diffraction (UTD) is commonly used to solve this problem for canonical and arbitrarily convex shaped perfect electric conductor (PEC) surfaces [3]. A UTD solution for mutual coupling on an impedance cylinder has been introduced in [4], [5] but using a constant surface impedance.

A series of surface plasmonic fibre devices were fabricated by depositing multiple thin coatings on a lapped section of a standard single mode telecoms fibre forming a D-shaped section and then inscribing a grating-type structure using UV light. The coatings consisted of base coatings of semi-conductor (germanium) and dielectric (silicon dioxide) materials, followed by different metals. These fibre devices showed high spectral refractive index sensitivity with high coupling efficiency in excess of 40 dB for indices in the aqueous regime and below, with estimated index sensitivities of Lambda lambda/Lambda n = 90-800 nm from 1 to 1.15 index range and Lambda lambda/Lambda n = 1200-4000 nm for refractive indices from 1.33 to 1.39. Porous yttria-stabilized zirconia (YSZ) has been regarded as a potential candidate for bone substitute due to its high mechanical strength. However, porous YSZ is biologically inert to bone tissue. It is therefore necessary to introduce bioactive coatings onto the walls of the porous structures to enhance its bioactivity. In this study, porous YSZ scaffolds were prepared using a replication technique and then coated with mesoporous bioglass due to its excellent bioactivity. The microstructures were examined using scanning electron microscopy and the mechanical strength was evaluated via compression test. The biocompatibility and bioactivity were also evaluated using bone marrow stromal cell (BMSC) proliferation test and simulated body fluid test.

For the filling and reconstruction of non-healing bone defects, the application of porous ceramic scaffold as bone substitutes is considered to be a reasonable choice. In bone tissue engineering, an ideal scaffold must satisfy several criterias such as open porosity, having high compressive strength (it depends where in body, and if external fixatures are used) and the practicability for cell migration. Many researchers have focused on enhancing the mechanical properties of hydroxyapatite scaffolds by combining it with other biomaterials, such as bioglass and polymers. Nevertheless, there is still a lack of suitable scaffolds based on porous biomaterials. In this study, zirconia scaffolds from two different templates (polyurethane (PU) and Acrylonitrile Butadiene Styrene (ABS) templates) were successfully fabricated with dissimilar fabrication techniques. The scaffold surfaces were further modified with mesoporous bioglass for the purpose of bone tissue engineering. In the study of PU template scaffold, high porosity (~88%) sol-gel derived yttria-stabilized zirconia (YSZ) scaffold was prepared by a polyurethane (PU) foam replica method using sol-gel derived zirconia for the first time, and double coated with Mesoporous Bioglass (MBGs) coating. For the ABS template scaffold, two types of templates (cube and cylinder) with different strut spacings were used and fabricated by a 3D Rapid Prototyper. Subsequently, zirconia scaffolds with low porosity (63±2.8% to 68±2.5%) were fabricated by embedding the zirconia powder slurry into the ABS templates and burning out the ABS to produce a uniform porous structure. The zirconia scaffolds were double coated with mesoporous bioglass by dip coating for the first time. The porosities of the scaffolds were calculated before and after coating. The microstructures were then examined using scanning electron microscopy and the mechanical properties were evaluated using compressive test. Accordingly, relationships between microstructure, processing and mechanical behaviour of the porous zirconia was discussed. Scaffold biocompatibility and bioactivity was also evaluated using a bone marrow stromal cell (BMSC) proliferation test and a simulated body fluid test.

Monodisperse silica nanoparticles were synthesised by the well-known Stober protocol, then dispersed in acetonitrile (ACN) and subsequently added to a bisacetonitrile gold(I) coordination complex ([Au(MeCN)2]?) in ACN. The silica hydroxyl groups were deprotonated in the presence of ACN, generating a formal negative charge on the siloxy groups. This allowed the [Au(MeCN)2]? complex to undergo ligand exchange with the silica nanoparticles and form a surface coordination complex with reduction to metallic gold (Au0) proceeding by an inner sphere mechanism. The residual [Au(MeCN)2]? complex was allowed to react with water, disproportionating into Au0 and Au(III), respectively, with the Au0 adding to the reduced gold already bound on the silica surface. The so-formed metallic gold seed surface was found to be suitable for the conventional reduction of Au(III) to Au0 by ascorbic acid (ASC). This process generated a thin and uniform gold coating on the silica nanoparticles. The silica NPs batches synthesised were in a size range from 45 to 460 nm. Of these silica NP batches, the size range from 400 to 480 nm were used for the gold-coating experiments.

Transport between compartments of eukaryotic cells is mediated by coated vesicles. The archetypal protein coats COPI, COPII, and clathrin are conserved from yeast to human. Structural studies of COPII and clathrin coats assembled in vitro without membranes suggest that coat components assemble regular cages with the same set of interactions between components. Detailed three-dimensional structures of coated membrane vesicles have not been obtained. Here, we solved the structures of individual COPI-coated membrane vesicles by cryoelectron tomography and subtomogram averaging of in vitro reconstituted budding reactions. The coat protein complex, coatomer, was observed to adopt alternative conformations to change the number of other coatomers with which it interacts and to form vesicles with variable sizes and shapes. This represents a fundamentally different basis for vesicle coat assembly.

In this work, we investigate how hydrogen sensing performance of thermally evaporated MoO3 nanoplatelets can be further improved by RF sputtering a thin layer of tantalum oxide (Ta2O5) or lanthanum oxide (La2O3). We show that dissociated hydrogen atoms cause the thin film layer to be polarised, inducing a measurable potential difference greater than that as reported previously. We attribute these observations to the presence of numerous traps in the thin layer; their states allow a stronger trapping of charge at the Pt-thin film oxide interface as compared to the MoO3 sensors without the coating. Under exposure to H2 (10 000 ppm) the maximum change in dielectric constant of 45.6 (at 260 °C) for the Ta2O5/MoO3 nanoplatelets and 31.6 (at 220 °C) for La2O3/MoO3 nanoplatelets. Subsequently, the maximum sensitivity for the Ta2O5/MoO3 is 16.87 (at 260 °C) and La2O3/MoO3 is 7.52 (at 300 °C).

Cell-based therapy is considered a promising approach to achieving predictable periodontal regeneration. In this study, the regenerative potential of cell sheets derived from different parts of the periodontium (gingival connective tissue, alveolar bone and periodontal ligament) were investigated in an athymic rat periodontal defect model. Periodontal ligament (PDLC), alveolar bone (ABC) and gingival margin-derived cells (GMC) were obtained from human donors. The osteogenic potential of the primary cultures was demonstrated in vitro. Cell sheets supported by a calcium phosphate coated melt electrospun polycaprolactone (CaP-PCL) scaffold were transplanted to denuded root surfaces in surgically created periodontal defects, and allowed to heal for 1 and 4 weeks. The CaP-PCL scaffold alone was able to promote alveolar bone formation within the defect after 4 weeks. The addition of ABC and PDLC sheets resulted in significant periodontal attachment formation. The GMC sheets did not promote periodontal regeneration on the root surface and inhibited bone formation within the CaP-PCL scaffold. In conclusion, the combination of either PDLC or ABC sheets with a CaP-PCL scaffold could promote periodontal regeneration, but ABC sheets were not as effective as PDLC sheets in promoting new attachment formation.

Despite a favourable morphology, anodized and ordered TiO2 nanotubes are incapable of showing electrochromic properties in comparison to many other metal oxide counterparts. To tackle this issue, MoO3 of 5 to 15 nm thickness was electrodeposited onto TiO2 nanotube arrays. A homogenous MoO3 coating was obtained and the crystal phase of the electrodeposited coating was determined to be α-MoO3. The electronic and optical augmentations of the MoO3 coated TiO2 platforms were evaluated through electrochromic measurements. The MoO3/TiO2 system showed a 4-fold increase in optical density over bare TiO2 when the thickness of the MoO3 coating was optimised. The enhancement was ascribed to (a) the α-MoO3 coating reducing the bandgap of the composite material, which shifted the band edge of the TiO2 platform, and subsequently increased the charge carrier transfer of the overall system and (b) the layered morphology of α-MoO3 that increased the intercalation probability and also provided direct pathways for charge carrier transfer.

We describe a novel and facile approach to covalently graft molecules containing stable free radicals onto carbon surfaces including graphene, carbon nanotubes, glassy carbon and carbon fibres. The new technique employs a stable aryl nitroxide radical diazonium tetrafluoroborate salt. The salt may be isolated and added to carbon surfaces in solution, suspension or electrochemically and represents a convenient, versatile and highly efficient means to adorn graphitic materials with large numbers of free radical spin systems

There has been significant interest in developing metal oxide films with high surface area-to-volume ratio nanostructures particularly in substantially increasing the performance of Pt/oxide/semiconductor Schottky-diode gas sensors. While retaining the surface morphology of these devices, they can be further improved by modifying their nanostructured surface with a thin metal oxide layer. In this work, we analyse and compare the electrical and hydrogen-sensing properties of MoO3 nanoplatelets coated with a 4 nm layer of tantalum oxide (Ta2O5) or lanthanum oxide (La2O3). We explain in our study, that the presence of numerous defect traps at the surface (and the bulk) of the thin high- layer causes a substantial trapping of charge during hydrogen adsorption. As a result, the interface between the Pt electrode and the thin oxide layer becomes highly polarised. Measurement results also show that the nanoplatelets coated with Ta2O5 can enable the device to be more sensitive (a larger voltage shift under hydrogen exposure) than those coated with La2O3.

A set of resistance-type strain sensors has been fabricated from metal-coated carbon nanofiller (CNF)/epoxy composites. Two nanofillers, i.e., multi-walled carbon nanotubes and vapor growth carbon fibers (VGCFs) with nickel, copper and silver coatings were used. The ultrahigh strain sensitivity was observed in these novel sensors as compared to the sensors made from the CNFs without metal-coating, and conventional strain gauges. In terms of gauge factor, the sensor made of VGCFs with silver coating is estimated to be 155, which is around 80 times higher than that in a metal-foil strain gauge. The possible mechanism responsible for the high sensitivity and its dependence with the networks of the CNFs with and without metal-coating and the geometries of the CNFs were thoroughly investigated.
