Treatment of the lambda(3)-cyclotriphosphazanes, cis-{EtNP(OR)}(3) [R = C6H4Br-4 (L-1) or C6H4Br-2 (L-2)] with [Mo(CO)(4)(NBD)] (NBD = norbornadiene) yields the mononuclear complexes [Mo(CO)(4)L-1] (1) and [Mo(CO)(4)L-2] (2). which have been characterised by IR, NMR (P-31 and H-1) and FAB mass spectral data. The structure of 1 has been confirmed by single crystal X-ray analysis. The structural and conformational changes brought about by complexation are discussed in terms of a bonding model based on "negative hyperconjugation". (C) 1998 Elsevier Science Ltd. The thiocarbohydrazone Schiff-base ligand with a nitrogen and sulphur donor was synthesized through condensation of pyridine-2-carbaldehyde and thiocarbohydrazide. Schiff-base ligands have the ability to conjugate with metal salts. A series of metal complexes with a general formula [MCl(2)(H(2)L)]center dot nH(2)O (M=Ni, Co, Cu and Zn) were synthesized by forming complexes of the N(1),N5-bis[pyridine-2-methylene]thiocarbohydrazone (H2L) Schiff-base ligand. These metal complexes and ligand were characterized by using ultraviolet-visible (UV-Vis), Fourier Transform Infrared (FT-IR), (1)H and (13)C NMR spectroscopy and mass spectroscopy, physicochemical characterization, CHNS and conductivity. The biological activity of the synthesized ligand was investigated by using Escherichia coli DNA as target. The DNA interaction of the synthesized ligand and complexes on E. coli plasmid DNA was investigated in the aqueous medium by UV-Vis spectroscopy and the binding constant (K(b)) was calculated. The DNA binding studies showed that the metal complexes had an improved interaction due to trans-geometrical isomers of the complexes than ligand isomers in cis-positions. (C) 2011 Elsevier B.V. The crystal polymorphism of the anthelmintic drug, triclabendazole (TCB), is described. Two anhydrates (Forms I and II), three solvates, and an amorphous form have been previously mentioned. This study reports the crystal structures of Forms I (1) and II (2). These structures illustrate the uncommon phenomenon of tautomeric polymorphism. TCB exists as two tautomers A and B. Form I (Z'=2) is composed of two molecules of tautomer A while Form II (Z'=1) contains a 1:1 mixture of A and B. The polymorphs are also characterized by using other solid-state techniques (differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), thermal gravimetric analysis (TGA), PXRD, FT-IR, and NMR spectroscopy). Form I is the higher melting form (m.p.: 177 degrees C, Delta Hf=approximate to 105 +/- 4 Jg-1) and is the more stable form at room temperature. Form II is the lower melting polymorph (m.p.: 166 degrees C, Delta Hf=approximate to 86 +/- 3 Jg-1) and shows high kinetic stability on storage in comparison to the amorphous form but it transforms readily into Form I in a solution-mediated process. Crystal structure analysis of co-crystals 3-11 further confirms the existence of tautomeric polymorphism in TCB. In 3 and 11, tautomer A is present whereas in 4-10 the TCB molecule exists wholly as tautomer B. The DFT calculations suggest that the optimized tautomers A and B have nearly the same energies. Single point energy calculations reveal that tautomer A (in Form I) exists in two low-energy conformations, whereas in Form II both tautomers A and B exist in an unfavorable high-energy conformation, stabilized by a five-point dimer synthon. The structural and thermodynamic features of 1-11 are discussed in detail. Triclabendazole is an intriguing case in which tautomeric and conformational variations co-exist in the polymorphs.

The evolution of entanglement in a 3-spin chain with nearest-neighbor Heisenberg-XY interactions for different initial states is investigated here. In an NMR experimental implementation, we generate multipartite entangled states starting from initial separable pseudo-pure states by simulating nearest-neighbor XY interactions in a 3-spin linear chain of nuclear spin qubits. For simulating XY interactions, we follow algebraic method of Zhang et al. Phys. Rev. A 72 (2005) 012331]. Bell state between end qubits has been generated by using only the unitary evolution of the XY Hamiltonian. For generating W-state and GHZ-state a single qubit rotation is applied on second and all the three qubits, respectively after the unitary evolution of the XY Hamiltonian.

Reversible addition-fragmentation chain transfer polymerization at 70 A degrees C in N,N-dimethylformamide was used to prepare poly(N-isopropylacrylamide-co-N,N-dimethylacrylamide) copolymers in various compositions to afford well-defined polymers with pre-determined molecular weight, narrow molecular weight distribution, and precise chain end structure. The copolymer compositions were determined by H-1 NMR spectroscopy. The reactivity ratios of N-isopropylacrylamide (NIPAM) and N,N-dimethylacrylamide (DMA) were calculated as r (NIPAM) = 0.838 and r (DMA) = 1.105, respectively, by the extended Kelen-Tudos method at high conversions. The lower critical solution temperature of PNIPAM can be altered by changing the DMA content in the copolymer chain. Differential scanning calorimetry and thermogravimetric analysis at different heating rates were carried out on these copolymers to understand the nature of thermal degradation and to determine its kinetics. Different kinetic models were applied to estimate various parameters like the activation energy, the order, and the frequency factor. These studies are important to understand the solid state polymer degradation of N-alkyl substituted polymers, which show great potential in the preparation of miscible polymer blends due to their ability to interact through hydrogen bonding.

Aluminium and zinc are known to be the major triggering agents for aggregation of amyloid peptides leading to plaque formation in Alzheimer's disease. While zinc binding to histidine in A (amyloid ) fragments has been implicated as responsible for aggregation, not much information is available on the interaction of aluminium with histidine. In the NMR study of the N-terminal A fragments, DAEFRHDSGYEV (A12) and DAEFRHDSGYEVHHQK (A16) presented here, the interactions of the fragments with aluminium have been investigated. Significant chemical shifts were observed for few residues near the C-terminus when aluminium chloride was titrated with A12 and A16 peptides. Surprisingly, it is nonhistidine residues which seem to be involved in aluminium binding. Based on NMR constrained structure obtained by molecular modelling, aluminium-binding pockets in A12 were around charged residues such as Asp, Glu. The results are discussed in terms of native structure propagation, and the relevance of histidine residues in the sequences for metal-binding interactions. We expect that the study of such short amyloid peptide fragments will not only provide clues for plaque formation in aggregated conditions but also facilitate design of potential drugs for these targets.

A new ruthenium pincer complex RuHCl(CO)(PNP)] (PNP = PhCH2N(CH2CH2PPh2)(2)) (1) was synthesized and characterized. The reactivity of complex 1 with electrophilic reagents XOTf (X = H, CH3, and Me3Si; OTf = CF3SO3) was studied by variable temperature NMR spectroscopy with an aim to observe and characterize sigma complexes of type Ru(eta(2)-HX)Cl(CO)(PNP)]OTf] (X = H (2), CH3 (3), Me3Si (4)). Reaction of complex 1 with HOTf resulted in the formation of the dihydrogen complex, Ru(eta(2)-H-2)Cl(CO)(PNP)OTf] (2). On the other hand, the reaction between complex 1 and MeOTf and Me3SiOTf resulted in the direct elimination of MeCl and Me3SiCl via a S(N)2 type of reaction without the intermediacy of the respective sigma complexes 3 and 4. This contrasting reactivity behaviour has been rationalized taking into consideration the approach of the relatively bulky electrophites CH3+ and Me3Si+ onto the hydride moiety of the ruthenium fragment, which is sterically hindered.

The use of Projection Reconstruction (PR) to obtain two-dimensional (2D) spectra from one-dimensional (1D) data in the solid state is illustrated. The method exploits multiple 1D spectra obtained using magic angle spinning and off-magic angle spinning. The spectra recorded under the influence of scaled heteronuclear scalar and dipolar couplings in the presence of homonuclear dipolar decoupling sequences have been used to reconstruct J/D Resolved 2D-NMR spectra. The use of just two 1D spectra is observed sufficient to reconstruct a J-resolved 2D-spectrum while a Separated Local Field (SLF) 2D-NMR spectrum could be obtained from three 1D spectra. The experimental techniques for recording the 10 spectra and procedure of reconstruction are discussed and the reconstructed results are compared with 20 experiments recorded in traditional methods. The application of the technique has been made to a solid polycrystalline sample and to a uniaxially oriented liquid crystal. Implementation of PR-NMR in solid state provides high-resolution spectra as well as leads to significant reduction in experimental time. The experiments are relatively simple and are devoid of several technical complications involved in performing the 2D experiments.
Low temperature FTIR, Raman, NMR spectroscopic and theoretical study of hydroxyethylammonium picrate

A combined experimental (infrared, Raman and NMR) and theoretical quantum chemical study is performed on the charge-transfer complex hydroxyethylammonium picrate (HEAP). The infrared (IR) spectra for HEAP were recorded at various temperatures, ranging from 16 K to 299 K, and the Raman spectrum was recorded at room temperature. A comparison of the experimental IR and Raman spectra with the corresponding calculated spectra was done, in order to facilitate interpretation of the experimental data. Formation of the HEAP complex is evidenced by the presence of the most prominent characteristic bands of the constituting groups of the charge-transfer complex e.g., NH3+, CO- and NO2]. Vibrational spectroscopic analysis, together with natural bond orbital (NBO) and theoretical charge density analysis in the crystalline phase, was used to shed light on relevant structural details of HEAP resulting from deprotonation of picric acid followed by formation of a hydrogen bond of the N-H center dot center dot center dot OC type between the hydroxyethylammonium cation and the picrate.C-13 and H-1 NMR spectroscopic analysis are also presented for the DMSO-d(6) solution of the compound revealing that in that medium the HEAP crystal dissolves forming the free picrate and hydroxyethylammonium ions. Finally, the electron excitation analysis of HEAP was performed in an attempt to determine the nature of the most important excited states responsible for the NLO properties exhibited by the compound. The broadband luminescence covering 1.2-1.6 mu m was observed from bismuth and aluminum co-doped germanium oxide glasses pumped by 808 nm laser at room temperature. The spectroscopic properties of GeO2:Bi,Al glasses strongly depend on the glass compositions and the pumping sources. To a certain extent, the Al3+ ions play as dispersing reagent for the infrared-emission centers in the GeO2:Bi,Al glasses. The broad infrared luminescence with a full width at half maximum larger than 200 nm and a lifetime longer than 200 mu s possesses these glasses with the potential applications in broadly tunable laser sources and ultra-broadband fiber amplifiers in optical communication field. Fisher families had been investigated by the Department of Commerce and Industries in earlier economic surveys conducted in 1935, 1938 and 1939 (Das Gupta, 1937 a & b; 1944 a & b). These surveys were directed at the general economic conditions of the urban and rural sectors of the population and therefore did not provide much information in particular on the life of the fisherman or his environment. The Department of Fisheries in 1954 conducted a rapid enquiry into the living conditions of fishermen to obtain some data on their income, indebtedness and general social conditions, at the request of the Canadian Co-operative Consultant for incorporation in his report on the "Status and Possibilities of Co-operative Development of the Fisheries of Ceylon” (MacDonald, 1954). The present survey was undertaken to provide more definite socio-economic information on the fishermen of Ceylon, covering such aspects as income, expenditure, indebtedness and living conditions. The survey was started in June, 1958, but was interrupted by the unsettled conditions of the Island at the time, taking therefore a little over a year for completion. Some of the data collected was used as a basis for a report on the living conditions of fishermen, incorporated in the “Guide to the Fisheries of Ceylon", a hand book published by the Department of Fisheries (Anon. 1958).

Three Polypropylene/Poly(ethylene-co-propylene) (PP/EPR) in-reactor alloys produced by a two-stage slurry/gas polymerization had different ethylene contents and mechanical properties, which were achieved by controlling the copolymerization time. The three alloys were fractionated into five fractions via temperature rising dissolution fractionation (TRDF), respectively. The chain structures of the whole samples and their fractions were analyzed using high-temperature gel permeation chromatography (GPC), Fourier transform infrared (FT-IR), C-13 nuclear magnetic resonance (C-13 NMR), and differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) techniques. These three in-reactor alloys mainly contained four portions: ethylenepropylene random copolymer (EPR), ethylene-propylene (EP) segmented and block copolymers, and propylene homopolymer. The increased copolymerization time caused the increased ethylene content of the sample. The weight percent of EPR, EP segmented and block copolymer also became higher.
