Two new metal-organic based polymeric complexes, [Cu-4(O2CCH2CO2)(4)(L)].7H(2)O (1) and [CO2(O2CCH2CO2)(2)(L)].2H(2)O (2) [L = hexamethylenetetramine (urotropine)], have been synthesized and characterized by X-ray crystal structure determination and magnetic studies. Complex 1 is a 1D coordination polymer comprising a carboxylato, bridged Cu-4 moiety linked by a tetradentate bridging urotropine. Complex 2 is a 3D coordination polymer made of pseudo-two-dimensional layers of Co(II) ions linked by malonate anions in syn-anticonformation which are bridged by bidentate urotropine in trans fashion, Complex 1 crystallizes in the orthothombic system, space group Pmmn, with a = 14,80(2) Angstrom, b = 14.54(2) Angstrom, c = 7.325(10) Angstrom, beta = 90degrees, and Z = 4. Complex 2 crystallizes in the orthorhombic system, space group Imm2, a = 7.584(11) Angstrom, b = 15.80(2) Angstrom, c = 6.939(13) Angstrom, beta = 90.10degrees(1), and Z = 4. Variable temperature (300-2 K) magnetic behavior reveals the existence of ferro- and antiferromagnetic interactions in 1 and only antiferromagnetic interactions in 2. The best fitted parameters for complex 1 are J = 13.5 cm(-1), J = -18.1 cm(-1), and g = 2.14 considering only intra-Cu-4 interactions through carboxylate and urotropine pathways. In case of complex 2, the fit of the magnetic data considering intralayer interaction through carboxylate pathway as well as interlayer interaction via urotropine pathway gave no satisfactory result at this moment using any model known due to considerable orbital contribution of Co(II) ions to the magnetic moment and its complicated structure. Assuming isolated Co(II) ions (without any coupling, J = 0) the shape of the chi(M)T curve fits well with experimental data except at very low temperatures.

The hydrothermal reactions of Ni(NO3)(2).6H(2)O, disodium fumarate (fum) and 1,2-bis(4-pyridyl)ethane (bpe)/1,3-bis(4-pyridyl) propane (bpp) in aqueous-methanol medium yield one 3-D and one 2-D metal-organic hybrid material, [Ni(fum)(bpe)] (1) and [Ni(fum)(bpp)(H2O)] (2), respectively. Complex 1 possesses a novel unprecedented structure, the first example of an "unusual mode" of a five-fold distorted interpenetrated network with metal-ligand linkages where the four six-membered windows in each adamantane-type cage are different. The structural characterization of complex 2 evidences a buckled sheet where nickel ions are in a distorted octahedral geometry, with two carboxylic groups, one acting as a bis-chelate, the other as a bis-monodentate ligand. The metal ion completes the coordination sphere through one water molecule and two bpp nitrogens in cis position. Variable-temperature magnetic measurements of complexes 1 and 2 reveal the existence of very weak antiferromagnetic intramolecular interactions and/or the presence of single-ion zero field splitting (D) of isolated Ni-II ions in both the compounds. Experimentally, both the J parameters are close, comparable and very small. Considering zero-field splitting of Ni-II, the calculated D values are in agreement with values reported in the literature for Ni-II ions. Complex 3, [{Co(phen)}(2)(fum)(2)] (phen=1,10-phenanthroline) is obtained by diffusing methanolic solution of 1,10-phenanthroline on an aqueous layer of disodium fumarate and Co(NO3)(2).6H(2)O. It consists of dimeric Co-II(phen) units, doubly bridged by carboxylate groups in a distorted syn-syn fashion. These fumarate anions act as bis-chelates to form corrugated sheets. The 2D layer has a (4,4) topology, with the nodes represented by the centres of the dimers. The magnetic data were fitted ignoring the very weak coupling through the fumarate pathway and using a dimer model.

Two phenoxo bridged dinuclear Cu(II) complexes, [Cu2L2(NO2)(2)] (1) and [Cu2L2(NO3)(2)] (2) have been synthesized using the tridentate reduced Schiff-base ligand 2-[(2-dimethylamino-ethylamino)-methyl]-phenol (HL). The complexes have been characterized by X-ray structural analyses and variable-temperature magnetic susceptibility measurements. The structures of the two compounds are very similar having the same tridentate chelating ligand (L) and mono-dentate anionic ligand nitrite for 1 and nitrate for 2. In both complexes Cu(II) is penta-coordinated but the square pyramidal geometry of the copper ions is severely distorted (Addison parameter (tau) = 0.33) in 1 while the distortion is quite small (average tau = 0.11) in 2. These differences have marked effect on the magnetic properties of two compounds. Although both are antiferromagnetically coupled, the coupling constants (J = -140.8 and -614.7 cm (1) for 1 and 2, respectively) show that the coupling is much stronger in 2.

A spectroscopic study was performed showing that the [Fe(III)(L(2-))(2)](1-) (L(2-) = dopacatecholate) complex reacts with Ni(II), Co(II) and Zn(II) in an aqueous solution containing S(2)O(3)(2-) resulting in the soluble [M(L(1-))(3)](1-) (L(1-) = dopasemiquinone; M = Ni(II), Co(II) or Zn(II) complex species. The Raman and IR spectra of the [CTA][M(L(1-))(3)] complexes, CTA hexadecyltrimethylammonium cation, in the solid state were obtained. The kinetic constants for the metal substitution reactions were determined at four different temperatures, providing values for Delta W(not equal) Delta S(not equal) and Delta G(not equal). The reactions were slow (k = 10(-1)1 M s(-1)) and endothermic. The system investigated can be considered as a simplified model to explain some aspects of siderophore chemistry. (c) 2007 Elsevier Inc. The aim of this investigation is to study how Zr/Ti-PILC adsorbs metals. The physico-chemical proprieties of Zr/Ti-PILC have been optimized with pillarization processes and Cu(II), Ni(II) and Co(II) adsorption from aqueous solution has been carried out, with maximum adsorption values of 8.85, 8.30 and 7.78 x10-1 mmol g-1, respectively. The Langmuir, Freundlich and Temkin adsorption isotherm models have been applied to fit the experimental data with a linear regression process. The energetic effect caused by metal interaction was determined through calorimetric titration at the solid-liquid interface and gave a net thermal effect that enabled the calculation of the exothermic values and the equilibrium constant.

Schiff base ligand: N,N'-bis(1-phenylethylidene)ethane-1,2-diamine (L), was derived from acetophenone and ethylenediamine by condensation and its complexes (1-5) were prepared with Pb2+, Ni2+, Co2+, Cu2+ and Cd2+ metal ions. Their structures were characterized by FAB-MS, IR spectra, elemental analyses and molar conductance. The octahedral geometry of the complexes was proposed by electronic spectra and magnetic moment data. The conductivity data showed that the complexes have non-electrolytic nature. The complexes (1-5) have higher in vitro antimicrobial activity than the Schiff base ligand (L). In the nuclease activity, the complexes cleave DNA as compared to control DNA in the presence of H2O2.

The potentially hexadentate polyamines N,N,N',N'-tetrakis(2-aminoethyl)ethane-1,2-diamine (L-1) and the octamethylated analogue N,N,N',N'-tetrakis(2-dimethylaminoethyl)ethane 1,2-diamine (L-2) have been complexed with copper(II) and the crystal structures of their complexes determined. A trigonal-bipyramidal co-ordination geometry for [Cu(HL1)][ClO4](3) was found where one aminoethyl arm is not co-ordinated. By contrast, a dinuclear structure of formula [(H2O)Cu(L-2)Cu(OH)](3+) was determined for the N-methylated analogue, where the hexaamine acts as a bridging ligand between the two square-pyramidal metal centres. Electronic and EPR spectroscopy are both consistent with these structures being maintained in solution.

The title pendent-arm macrocyclic hexaamine ligand binds stereospecifically in a hexadentate manner, and we report here its isomorphous Ni-II and Zn-II complexes (both as perchlorate salts), namely (cis-6,13-dimethyl-1,4,8,11-tetraazacyclotetradecane-6,13-diamine-kappa(6)N)nickel(II) diperchlorate, [Ni(C12H30N6)](ClO4)(2), and (cis-6,13-dimethyl-1,4,8,11-tetraazacyclotetradecane-6,13-diamine-kappa(6)N)zinc(II) diperchlorate, [Zn(C-12 H30N6)](ClO4)(2). Distortion of the N-M-N valence angles from their ideal octahedral values becomes more pronounced with increasing metal-ion size and the present results are compared with other structures of this ligand.

Mononuclear manganese(II) [Mn(kappa O-HL)(2)(CH3OH)(4)] (4), nickel(II) [Ni(kappa O-2, kappa N-L)(H2O)(3)] (5), cadmium(II) [Cd(kappa O-2-HL)(2)(CH3OH)(3)] (7), tetranuclear zinc(II) [Zn-4(mu-OH)(2)(1 kappa O:2 kappa O-HL)(4)(kappa O-HL)(2)(H2O)(4)] (6) and polynuclear aqua sodium(I) [Na(H2O)(2)(mu-H2O)(2)](n)(HL)(n) (2) and magnesium(II) [Mg(OH)(H2O)(mu-H2O)(2)](n)(-HL)(n) (3) complexes were synthesized using 3-(2-carboxyphenyl-hydrazone)pentane-2,4-dione (H2L, 1) as a ligand precursor. The complexes were characterized by single crystal X-ray diffraction, elemental analysis, IR, H-1 and C-13 NMR (for 2, 3, 6 and 7) spectroscopies. Mono- or dianionic deprotonated derivatives of H2L display different coordination modes and lead to topologies and nuclearities of the complexes depending on metal ions and conditions used for the syntheses. Extensive intermolecular H-bonds form supramolecular arrangements in 1D chains (4 and 6), 1D chains of the organic anion and 2D networks of the metal-aqua aggregates (2 and 3), 2D networks (7) or even 3D frameworks (5). Electrochemical studies, by cyclic voltammetry and controlled potential electrolysis, show ligand centred redox processes as corroborated by theoretical DFT calculations in terms of LUMO and HOMO compositions. Two new tetranuclear complexes [Cu-4(mu-O)(L-1)-Cl-4] and [Cu-4(mu(4)-O)(L-2)(2)Cl-4] (2), where H2L1 is a macrocyclic ligand resulting from [2+2] condensation of 2,6-diformy1-4-methylphanol (DFF) and 1,3-bis(aminopropy1)tetramethyldisiloxane, and HL2 is a 1:2 condensation product: of DFF with trimethylsilyl p-aminobenzoate, have been prepared. The structures of the products were established by Xray diffraction. The complexes have been characterised by FTIR, UV/Vis spectroscopy, ES1 mass-spectrometry and magnetic susceptibility measurements. The latter revealed that the letrftriuclear complexes can be descr bed as two ferromagnetically coupled dinuclear units, in which the two copper(II) ions interact antiferromacinetically. The ccimpi.iunds act as homogeneous catalyst precursors for a number of single-pot reactions, including (I) hydrocarbaxylation, with CO, H2O and K2S2O8, of a variety of linear and cyclic (n = 5-8) alkanes into the corresponding Cn+1 carboxylic acids, (ii) peroxidative oxidation of cyclohexane, and (iii) solvent-free microwave-assisted oxidation of 1-phenyletha.nol.

A one-pot template reaction of sodium 2-(2-(dicyanomethylene) hydrazinyl) benzenesulfonate (NaHL1) with water and manganese(II) acetate tetrahydrate led to the mononuclear complex [Mn(H2O)(6)](HL1a)(2)center dot 4H(2)O (1), where (HL1a) -= 2-(SO3-)C6H4(NH)=N=C(C N) (CONH2) is the carboxamide species derived from nucleophilic attack of water on a cyano group of (HL1) . The copper tetramer [Cu-4(H2O)(10)(-) (1 kappa N: kappa O-2: kappa O, 2 kappa N: k(O)-L-2)(2)]center dot 2H(2)O (2) was obtained from reaction of Cu(NO3)(2)center dot 2.5H(2)O with sodium 5-(2( 4,4-dimethyl-2,6-dioxocyclohexylidene) hydrazinyl)-4-hydroxybenzene-1,3-disulfonate (Na2H2L2). Both complexes were characterized by elemental analysis, IR spectroscopy, ESI-MS and single crystal X-ray diffraction. They exhibit a high catalytic activity for the solvent-and additive-free microwave (MW) assisted oxidation of primary and secondary alcohols with tert-butylhydroperoxide, leading to yields of the oxidized products up to 85.5% and TOFs up to 1.90 x 103 h(-1) after 1 h under low power (5-10 W) MW irradiation. Moreover, the heterogeneous catalysts are easily recovered and reused, at least for three consecutive cycles, maintaining 89% of the initial activity and a high selectivity.
