For some time, oral surgeons have tried several surgical procedures to improve the alveolar ridge for prosthetic appliance construction. The techniques used for this purpose are divided into four groups: submucosal vestibuloplasty; secondary epithelization; soft tissue grafting and transpositional flaps. Twenty patients who had problems to wear dentures due to unsatisfactory retention and stability were selected at the Oral and MaxilloFacial Surgery and Traumatology Clinic of Dental School of São José dos Campos. They were divided in two groups and operated by submucosal vestibuloplasty using stents and secondary epithelization vestibuloplasty by Clark's technique and were evaluated twelve months after operations in relationship of the sulcus depth. The results were obtained by clinical and radiological examination before and after surgery, and they are similar to those found in the literature reaching satisfactory functional judgement

Many incisions have been described for approaches to zygomatic fractures. Precise repositioning of zygomatic complex fractures is difficult. The traditional approach is through an eyebrow incision, but it can produce a scar that causes aesthetic and psychological problems for the patient. We describe the supratarsal fold approach to expose the frontozygomatic suture and to reduce small displacements of frontal sinus anterior wall; it gives good access and excellent aesthetic results.

The execution of a appropriate odontological surgical treatment for patients with Myocardial Infarction has been based in established protocols for important works in world wide literature during the sixty’s and seventy’s decade, established with a minimum of six months before the noncardiac surgery. The recent advancements in the medical assessment of surgical risk based on the individual analysis of each case with availability of new therapeutic tools in reference to medical or dental treatment, allowing for new procedures that can be used in the execution of safer odontological surgery for each patients. This review of the literature shows the actual tendencies of the treatment of patients with Myocardial Infarction concerning specific care before, during and after surgery based on laboratory evaluation and drug therapy as well as the possibility of surgical treatment before six months post-infarction.

Necrotizing ulcerative periodontitis is associated with bacteria and predisposing risk factors. The treatment is centered in elimination and/or control of the bacteria and predisposing risk factors. However the disease acute phase could induce sequelae as periodontal tissue destruction which may be treated by periodontal surgical procedures.

Multiple gingival recessions may cause mainly dentinary sensibility and aesthetic alterations. The subepithelial graft is a mucogingival technique which can be used to treat multiple gingival recessions. In this case report the Erbium YAG laser was applied to promote radicular surface decontamination, an important step to reach reinsertion of the gingival tissues on exposed radicular surface.

The oral anticoagulants (AOC) and platelet antiagregants are drugs used for the prevention of thromboembolic phenomena, such as pulmonary embolism in patients with atrial fribrilation heart valves, thrombosis and pulmonary embolism. For patients who are undergoing surgical procedures-dentistry were asked to discontinue the use of anticoagulants until the value of the INR remained = 2.0, that in order to avoid trans and hemorrhages in the postoperative period. However, the AOC can cause the formation of a clot, leading to obstruction of blood pathways. Thus, it became doubtful the medicine for surgery, in which local hemostatic measures would be sufficient to promote hemostasis. Thus, the objective of the review was to evaluate the risk of bleeding in patients AOC users that are subjected to surgical procedures, through a bibliographical survey carried out in relevant clinical studies published between 1990 and 2012, by the MedlinePubMed data. In this review of literature was concluded that the benefit of thromboembolism prevention overcomes the risk hemorrhage, therefore, it is recommended to keep the dose of anticoagulant therapy unchanged for patients undergoing oral surgery and implant dentistry, using appropriate INR levels with the assistance of local hemostatic. In addition, a refined surgical technique should be performed in these patients. With respect to the most invasive oral surgery, with a risk of bleeding, treatment may be necessary in conjunction with the medical staff.

The frontal sinus fractures are derived from accidents of great intensity. Are usually associated with fractures of the midface, including the naso-orbital fractures and zygomatic ethmoid. Several treatment modalities have been proposed. In this case it was used to access bicoronal reconstruction of the anterior frontal sinus, and restore contour fronto-naso-orbital-ethmoid with satisfactory results.

Bone is a specialized connective tissue, vascular and dynamic changes over the life of the organism. When injured, has a unique ability to regenerate and repair without the presence of scars, but in some situations due to the size of the defect, the bone tissue does not regenerate so completely, it is necessary to carry out bone grafting procedures. Considering there are various types of grafts and various donor sites. Thus, the aim of this study was to review the literature to some type of graft most commonly used in dentistry. Given the importance of bone reconstruction in oral and maxillofacial surgery, it is necessary to know the viability and influence of biomaterials, or not associated with autogenous grafts in bone repair. Even this, with many qualities, but further studies should be done to achieve each day, a synthetic material compatible with bone tissue lost in adequate amounts without requiring extra-oral surgeries that are considered to be devoted to higher morbidity.

This study sought to evaluate the efficacy of passive ultrasonic irrigation (PUI) on removing the smear layer and debris from root dentin using scanning electron microscopy (SEM). Twenty-five bovine incisors were manually prepared and divided into three groups according to the final irrigation protocol: EDTA, final irrigation with 12 mL of 17% EDTA for 3 minutes followed by 5 mL of 2.5% NaOCl; EDTA=PUI, final flush with 4 mL of 17% EDTA and PUI for 30 seconds. These procedures were repeated three times to standardize the volume of the irrigant. Control group, after preparation, the specimens were irrigated only with 17 mL of 2.5% NaOCl. The roots were fractured and analyzed using SEM. The intragroup analysis revealed that the EDTA=PUI protocol removed a higher amount of debris at the cervical third (P 5 0.03). The intergroup analysis revealed that EDTA=PUI presented the lowest amount of debris at the cervical third (P 5 0.007). Smear layer scores were higher in the control group compared with the EDTA and EDTA=PUI groups, but only at the cervical third (P 50.02). None of the final irrigant protocols completely removed the smear layer and debris. EDTA=PUI only improved the removal of debris at the cervical third.
