Heterogeneous electron transfer rate constants (k(s)) and diffusion coefficients (D) of the ferrocene and its derivatives. in a new synthetic comb polymer solvent, poly(dimethylsiloxane-g-monomethylether polyethylene glycol) (SCP), and several other polymer solvents were estimated by using microelectrodes. Also, the influence of various supporting electrolytes on k(s) and D of ferrocene was studied. It was shown that k(s) and D of ferrocene decreased with increasing anionic size of the supporting electrolyte, but k(s) tended to increase with increasing radius of the solvated cation. Also, the cationic size of the supporting electrolytes had little effects on D. The values of k(s) and D for the ferrocene derivatives in the polymer solvents were in sharp contrast to those in monomeric solvents. Thus. the k(s) values were proportional to D in the polymer solvents. which indicates that solvent dynamics control of the electrode reaction. The values of k(s) and D of ferrocene in SCP were larger than those in other polymer solvents indicating that SCP is a good polymer solvent. (C) 2000 Elsevier Science B.V. All rights reserved.

The electron self-exchange rates (k(ex)) of viologen and its derivatives are estimated by using microelectrode voltammetry in poly(ethylene glycol) films. The dependences of supporting electrolyte concentration and sizes of viologen and its derivatives on k(ex) and diffusion coefficients (D) are discussed. Results show that k(ex) increases with the decrease of supporting electrolyte concentration and sizes of reactants. (C) 2000 Elsevier Science S.A. All rights reserved.

A new type of silicomolybdate-methylsilicate-graphite composite material was prepared by the sol-gel technique and used for the fabrication of an amperometric nitrite sensor. The silicomolybdic anion acts as a catalyst, the graphite powder ensures conductivity by percolation, the silicate provides a rigid porous backbone and the methyl groups endow hydrophobicity and thus limit the wetting section of the modified electrode. Cyclic voltammetry, square-wave voltammetry and chronoamperometry were employed to characterize the sensor. The amperometric nitrite sensor exhibited a series of good properties: high sensitivity (1.771 mu A mmol(-1) dm(3)), a short response time (7 s), remarkable long-term stability and especially reproducibility of surface renewal in the event of electrode surface fouling.

A hydrogen peroxide biosensor was fabricated by coating a sol-gel-peroxidase layer onto a Nafion-methylene green modified electrode. Immobilization of methylene green (MG) was attributed to the electrostatic force between MG(+) and the negatively charged sulfonic acid groups in Nafion polymer, whereas immobilization of horseradish peroxidase was attributed to the encapsulation function of the silica sol-gel network. Cyclic voltammetry and chronoamperometry were employed to demonstrate the feasibility of electron transfer between sol-gel-immobilized peroxidase and a glassy carbon electrode. Performance of the sensor was evaluated with respect to response time, sensitivity as well as operational stability. The enzyme electrode has a sensitivity of 13.5 mu A mM(-1) with a detection limit of 1.0 x 10(-7) M H2O2, and the sensor achieved 95% of the steady-state current within 20 s. This paper presents a microelectrode voltammetric determination of heterogeneous electron transfer rate constants (k(s)) and diffusion coefficients (D) of 7,7,8',8 '-tetracyanoquinodimethane (TCNQ) in polyelectrolytes. The diffusion coefficients are estimated using cyclic voltammetry under linear diffusion conditions, and the heterogeneous electron transfer rate constants are obtained under mixed linear and radial diffusion in the polyelectrolyte. k(s) and D increase with increasing temperature, and the activation barriers of the electrode reaction for reduction of TCNQ are obtained. On the other hand, the dependencies of D and k(s) of TCNQ on the size and charge of the counterion are compared in the polyelectrolyte. (C) 1998 Elsevier Science Ltd. All rights reserved.

A new type of sol-gel organic-inorganic hybrid material was developed and used for the production of biosensors. This material is composed of silica sol and a grafting copolymer of poly(vinyl alcohol) with 4-vinylpyridine. It prevents the cracking of conventional sol-gel-derived glasses and eliminates the swelling of the hydrogel. The optimum composition of the hybrid material was first examined, and then glucose oxidase was immobilized in this matrix to demonstrate its application. The characteristics of the biosensor were studied by cyclic voltammetry and chronoamperometry. The biosensor exhibited a series of good properties: high sensitivity (600 nA mmol(-1)L(-1)), short response time (11 s) and remarkable long-term stability in storage (at least 5 months). In addition, the characteristics of the second-generation biosensor with the use of tetrathiafulvalene as a mediator mere discussed.

In this paper, the polypyrrole (PPy) film modified electrodes are used as an electroreleasing reservoir. The electrochemically controlled release of 5-fluorouracil (5-FU) from a PPy film modified electrode to aqueous electrolytes is studied by the in situ probe beam deflection (PBD) method combined with cyclic voltammetry (CV) and chronoamperometry (CA). The PBD results reveal that the release of 5-FU from PPy film depends on the electrochemical redox process of the PPy film electrode. The released amount is controlled by the reduction potential and is proportional to the thickness of the film. The exchange of 5-FU anions with Cl- on an open circuit is slow on the time scale of minutes, but the release of 5-FU anions can proceed quickly at -0.6 V (vs Ag/AgCl). The amount of released 5-FU decreases with the time that the PPy film is soaked in aqueous solution. (C) 1998 Elsevier Science Ltd. All rights reserved.

The diffusion coefficients (D) of quinhydrone were estimated in polymer electrolytes by using non-steady-state chronoamperometry and steady-state current voltammetry. The D values have been estimated in polyethylene glycol (PEG) containing different concentrations, and cations of supporting electrolytes, and in different solvents over a range of temperatures. The dependencies of electroactive probe diffusion coefficients on temperature, supporting electrolyte concentration and polymer chain length are discussed. The results show that D increases with increasing temperature and decreasing concentration of supporting electrolyte. The diffusion coefficient depends strongly on the length of polymer chain and decreases sharply with increasing polymer chain length. The contribution of electron self-exchange has been explored and it seems to be negligible here. (C) 1998 Elsevier Science S.A.

A new kind of self-assembled monolayer (SAM) formed in aqueous solution through the pre-formed inclusion complexes (abbreviated CD . C-n) between alpha-, beta-cyclodextrins (CDs) and alkanethiols (CH3(CH2)(n-1)SH, n = 10, 14 and 18) was prepared successfully on gold electrodes. High-resolution H-1 NMR was used to confirm the formation of CD . C-n. X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, cyclic voltammetry and chronoamperometry were used to characterize the resulting SAMs (denoted as M-CD . Cn). It was found that M-CD . Cn were more stable against repeated potential cycling in 0.5 M H2SO4 than SAMs of CH3(CH2)(n-1)SH (denoted as M-Cn), with a relative sequence of Mbeta-CD . Cn > Malpha-CD . Cn > M-Cn. In addition, an order of blocking the electron transfer between gold electrodes and redox couples (both Fe(CN)(6)(3-) and Ru(NH3)(6)(3+)) in solution, M-CD . C10 > M-CD . C14 > M-CD . C18, was observed. A plausible explanation is provided to elucidate some of the observations. (C) 1997 Elsevier Science S.A.

A thin-layer microdisk array electrode (TLMDAE) was designed for in situ reflectance FTIR spectroelectrochemical studies. A theoretical estimation, cyclic voltammetry, chronoamperometry and in situ IR measurements demonstrate that this novel design of array electrode results in advantages such as reduced ohmic potential drop, small cell constant and facility for diffusional exchange between thin layer and bulk solution. It has been suggested that the enhanced edge diffusion on the TLMDAE leads to a reduced accumulation of species in the thin layer. (C) 1997 Elsevier Science S.A.

A novel kind of electroactive self-assembled monolayer (SAM) has been successfully prepared through the following procedure: (1) formation of inclusion complexes (denoted as CD/C8VC10SH) between N-(n-octyl)-N'-(10-mercaptodecyl)-4,4'-bipyridinium dibromide (C8VC10SH) and alpha-, beta-cyclodextrin (CD) under a mild condition; (2) spontaneous formation of SAM of CD/C8VC10SH on gold electrodes at room temperature. High-resolution H-1-NMR spectrum was used to confirm the formation of CD/C8VC10SH. Cyclic voltammetry was used to characterize the redox behavior of the resulting monolayers and chronoamperometry and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy to characterize their electron transfer kinetics. It was found that the redox sites in SAM of CD/C8VC10SH are effectively diluted, with a larger electron transfer rate constant than that of SAM of C8VC10SH.

The ion exchange mechanism accompanying the oxidation/reduction processes of cupric hexacyanoferrate-modified platinum electrodes in different aqueous electrolyte solutions has been studied by means of in situ probe beam deflection and the electrochemical quartz crystal microbalance technique. The results demonstrate that the charge neutrality of the film during the reoxidation/reduction process is accomplished predominantly by the movement of cations, but anions and/or solvent are also participator(s). Moreover, in KHC8H4O4 (potassium biphthalate) solution, the EQCM data obtained from chronoamperometry experiment are more complicated than those in KCl and K2SO4 solutions. Supported lipid membranes consisting of self-assembled alkanethiol and lipid monolayers on gold substrates could be produced by three different deposition methods: the Langmuir-Blodgett (L-B) technique, the painted method, and the paint-freeze method, By using cyclic voltammetry, chronoamperometry/chronocoulometry and a.c. impedance measurements, we demonstrated that lipid membranes prepared by these three deposition methods had obvious differences in specific capacitance, resistance and thickness. The specific capacitance of lipid membranes prepared by depositing an L-B monolayer on the alkanethiol alkylated surfaces was 0.53 mu Fcm(-2), 0.44 mu Fcm(-2) by the painted method and 0.68 mu Fcm(-2) by the paint-freeze method. The specific conductivity of lipid membranes prepared by the L-B method was over three times lower than that of the painted lipid membranes, while that of the paint-freeze method was the lowest. The difference among the three types of lipid membranes was ascribed to the influence of the organic solvent in lipid films and the changes in density of the films. The lipid membranes prepared by the usual painted method contained a trace amount of the organic solvent. The organic solvent existing in the hydrocarbon core of the membrane reduced the density of the membrane and increased the thickness of the membrane. The membrane prepared by depositing an L-B monolayer containing no solvent had higher density and the lowest fluidity, and the thickness of the membrane was smaller. The lipid membrane prepared by the paint-freeze method changed its structure sharply at the lower temperature. The organic solvent was frozen out of the membrane while the density of the membrane increased greatly. All these caused the membrane to exist in a ''tilted'' state and the thickness of this membrane was the smallest. The lipid membrane produced by the paint-freeze method was a membrane not containing organic solvent. This method was easier in manipulation and had better reproducibility than that of the usual painting method and the method of forming free-standing lipid film. The solvent-free membrane had a long lifetime and a higher mechanical stability. This model membrane would be useful in many areas of scientific research.

The diffusion rates of ferrocene have been estimated in five kinds of poly(ethylene glycol) solution, containing the electrolyte LiClO4, by using non-steady-state chronoamperometry. The D-app of ferrocene increases with increasing temperature, and the dependency of D-app on temperature obeys the Williams-Landel-Ferry equation. The D-app of ferrocene decreases with increasing polymer chain length. Both the chain length and temperature dependence conform to a simple free volume model. A relation between current and polymer chain length is suggested at room and high temperatures.
