Slightly < 111 >-oriented 0.65Pb(Mg1/3Nb2/3)03-0.35PbTiO(3) ceramic was prepared using fine powders obtained by means of an alternative and promising chemical oxide precursor method. High quality samples with improved structural, microstructural, dielectric and ferroelectric properties were obtained. The dielectric constant value (epsilon similar to 2577) measured at 1 kHz is compared to unpoled < 112 > grain-oriented ceramics while the remanent polarization (P-r similar to 19-1 mu cm(-2)) is compared with random grain-oriented ceramics. These results point out the viability to produce ferroelectric PMN-PT ceramics of very good quality using powder precursors prepared from this chemical method. (c) 2007 Elsevier B.V. Usually, the kinetic models used in the study of sintered ceramic are performed by means of indirect physical tests, such as, results obtained from data of linear shrinkage and mass loss. This fact is justified by the difficulty in the determinations of intrinsic parameters of ceramic materials along every sintering process. In this way, the technique of atomic force microscopy (AFM) was used in order to determine the importance and the evolution of the dihedral angle in the sintering of 0.5 mol% MnO2-doped tin dioxide obtained by the polymeric precursor method.

Structural heterogeneities in SnO2.CoO-based varistors were analyzed by transmission electron microscopy. In SnO2.CoO-based system doped with La2O3 and Pr2O3 two kinds of precipitate phases at grain boundary region were found. Using energy dispersive spectrometry they were found to be Co2SnO4 and Pr2Sn2O7, presenting a defined crystalline structure. It was also identified that such precipitate phases are mainly located in triple-junctions of the microstructure. HRTEM analysis revealed the existence of other two types of junctions, one as being homo-junctions of SnO2 grains and other due to twin grain boundaries inside the SnO2.CoO grain. The role of these types of junction in the overall nonlinear electrical features is also discussed. (C) 2003 Elsevier B.V. Ltd. All rights reserved.

The mechanisms of material removal and the interactions among scratches performed in ceramic materials were investigated using acoustic emission signals, and scanning electron microscopy, in scratching experiments. Several testing conditions were used to produce different types of removing mechanism on a glass as well as on a polycrystalline alumina sample composed by heterogeneous grain size. It is known that the material removing process on a polycrystalline ceramic involves intergranular microfracture and grain dislodgement, unlike the chipping produced by the extension of lateral cracks in non-granular materials, such as glass. Distinct settings for velocities, loads, and two types of diamond indenter were tested. The material removal was carried out by three different methods of scratching: single passes, repeated overlapping passes, and parallel scratches. As a general result, there was a clear relationship between the acoustic emission signals and the damage intensity occurred in the material removal. More specifically, there were differences in the acoustic emission signal levels in the scratches made on the alumina and on the glass owing to the material removal mechanisms associated with the structure of these materials. A gradual increase in the acoustic emission levels was observed when the number of repeated passes was increased as a result of the damage accumulation process followed by severe material removal. It was also noticed that the acoustic emission signals were capable of reflecting the interactions between two parallel scratches.

The effect of Ta2O5 doping in 0.99SnO(2). 0.01CoO on the microstructure and electrical properties of this ceramic were analyzed in this study. The grain size was found to decrease from 6.87 mu m to 5.68 mu m when the Ta2O5 concentration increased from 0.050 to 0.075 mol%. DC electrical characterization showed a dramatic increase in the current loss and decrease in the non-linear coefficient with the increase of the Ta2O5 concentration. The conduction mechanism is by thermionic emission and the potential barriers are of Schottky type, separated by a thin film. (C) 2000 Kluwer Academic Publishers.

ZrO2 powder was coated with Al2O3 precursor generated by a polymeric precursor method in aqueous solution. The system of nanocoated particles formed a core shell-like structure in which the particle is the core and the nanocoating (additive) is the shell. A new approach is reported in order to control the superficial mass transport and the exaggerated grain growth during the sintering of zirconia powder. Transmission electron microscopy (TEM) observations clearly showed the formation of an alumina layer on the surface of the zirconia particles. This layer modifies the sintering process and retards the maximum shrinkage temperature of the pure zirconia.

Bi1.5ZnSb1.5O7 dielectric ceramic with pyrochlore structure was investigated by impedance spectroscopy from 400 to 750 degreesC. Pyrochlore was synthesized by the polymeric precursor method, a chemical synthesis route derived from Pechini's method. The grain or bulk resistance exhibits a sensor temperature characteristic, being a thermistor with a negative temperature coefficient (NTC). Only a single region was identified on the resistance curve investigated. The NTC thermistor characteristic parameter (beta) is equal to 7140 degreesC, in the temperature range investigated. The temperature coefficient of the resistance (alpha) was derived, being equal to -4.46x10(-2) degreesC(-1) at 400 degreesC. The conduction mechanism and relaxation are discussed. In this work, in situ alpha-SiAlON-SiC ceramic composites were obtained,by, liquid phase sintering, using SiC as reinforcement. Different beta-SiC powder contents (0-20 wt.%), were added to Si3N4-AlN-RE2O3. powder mixtures, and compacted by cold isostatic pressing. The samples were sintered at 1950 degrees C for 1 h, in N-2 atmosphere. Sintered: samples were characterized by relative density, weight loss, X-ray diffraction and scanning electron microscopy. Furthermore, mechanical properties such as hardness and fracture toughness were determined by Vickers indentation method. Lattice parameters of the alpha' phase did not considerably change with increase of SiC content. However, morphology, average grain size and aspect ratio of the alpha' phase were considerably changed with increase of the SiC content. These behavior influences significantly the mechanical properties of this hard ceramic composite. (C) 2006 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

This paper reviews the influence of particle size distribution, agglomerates, rearrangement, sintering atmospheres and impurities on the pore evolution of some commonly studied oxides. These factors largely affect sintering mechanisms due to modifications of diffusion coefficients or evaporation-condensation. Very broad particle size distribution leads to grain growth and agglomerates densify first. Rearrangement of particles due to neck asymmetry mainly in the early stage of sintering is responsible for a high rate of densification in the first minutes of sintering by collapse of large pores. Sintering atmospheres play an important role in both densification and pore evolution. The chemical interaction of water molecules with several oxides like MgO, ZnO and SnO2 largely affects surface diffusion. As a consequence, there is an increase in the rates of pore growth and densification for MgO and ZnO and in the rate of pore growth for SnO2. Carbon dioxide does not affect the rate of sintering of MgO but greatly affects both rates of pore growth and densification of ZnO. Oxygen concentration in the atmosphere can especially affect semiconductor oxides but significantly affects the rate of pore growth of SnO2. Impurities like chlorine ions increase the rate of pore growth in MgO due to evaporation of HCl and Mg(OH)Cl, increasing the rate of densification and particle cuboidization. CuO promotes densification in SnO2, and is more effective in dry air. The rate of densification decrease and pore widening are promoted in argon. An inert atmosphere favors SnO2 evaporation due to reduction of CuO. © 1990.

A novel fractal model for grain boundary regions of ceramic materials was developed. The model considers laterally inhomogeneous distribution of charge carriers in the vicinity of grain boundaries as the main cause of the non-Debye behaviour and distribution of relaxation times in ceramic materials. Considering the equivalent circuit the impedance of the grain boundary region was expressed. It was shown that the impedance of the grain boundary region has the form of the Davidson-Cole equation. The fractal dimension of the inhomogeneous distribution of charge carriers in the region close to the grain boundaries could be calculated based on the relation ds = 1 + β, where β is the constant from the Davidson-Cole equation.

Heavy metal oxide (HMO) glasses have received special attention due to their optical, electrical and magnetic properties. The problem with these glasses is their corrosive nature. In this work, three ceramic crucibles (Al 2O 3, SnO 2 and ZrO 2) were tested in the melting of the system 40 PbO-35 BiO 1.5-25 GaO 1.5 (cation-%). After glass melting, crucibles were transversally cut and analyzed by scanning electronic microscopy (SEM), coupled to microanalysis by energy dispersive spectroscopy (EDS). Results indicated that zirconia crucibles presented the highest corrosion, probably due to its smallest grain size. Tin oxide crucibles presented a low corrosion with small penetration of the glass into the crucible. This way, these crucibles are an interesting alternative to melt corrosive glasses in instead of gold or platinum crucibles. It is important to emphasize the lower cost of tin oxide crucibles, compared to gold or platinum ones.

Due to their low cost and high resistance to corrosion, ceramic crucibles can be used for the melting of PBG glasses (PbO-BiO 1.5GaO 1.5). These glasses present good window transmission from ultra-violet to infrared, making their use as optical fibres promising. However, their disadvantage is the high reactivity, leading to the corrosion of different crucibles, including gold and platinum ones. In this work, the corrosion of Al 2O 3, SnO 2 and ZrO 2 crucibles after melting at temperatures varying from 850 to 1000°C, was evaluated by Scanning Electronic Microscopy (SEM) in conjunction with microanalysis by EDS. The lead diffusion profile in the crucible material was obtained. Diffusion coefficients were calculated according to the Fick and Fisher theories. Results indicated that the different crucibles presented similar behaviour: in the region near the interface, diffusion occurs in the volumetric way and in regions away from the interface, diffusion occurs through grain boundary.
