Long-term stability studies of particle storage rings can not be carried out using conventional numerical integration algorithms. We require symplectic integration algorithms which are both fast and accurate. In this paper, we study a symplectic integration method wherein the sym-plectic map representing the Hamiltonian system is refactorized using polynomial symplectic maps. This method is used to perform long term integration on a particle storage ring.

The use of the sulfurdiimide RN=S=NR' (R = R' = SiMe3, 3) in reactions with group 4 metallocene bis(trimethylsilyl)-acetylene complexes of the type [Cp2M(L (eta(2)-Me3Si-C2SiMe3)] (1: M = Ti, no L; 2: M = Zr, L = pyridine) has led to the formation of four-membered metallacycles 4M containing the group 4 metal, nitrogen and sulfur. DFT calculations performed on compound 4Ti indicate that this complex is best described as a sigma-complex with cyclic delocalisation of the ring electrons. Moreover, pseudo-Jahn-Teller distortion plays a significant role in stabilising this complex.

Six new copper metal complexes with formulas Cu(H2O)(2,2'-bpy) (H2L)](2) center dot H4L center dot 4 H2O (1), {Cu(H2O)(2,2'-bpy)-(H3L)}(2)(H2L)]center dot 2H(2)O (2), Cu(H2O)(1,10-phen)(H2L)](2)center dot 6H(2)O (3), Cu(2,2'-bpy)(H2L)](n)center dot nH(2)O (4), Cu(1,10-phen)(H2L)](n)center dot 3nH(2)O (5), and {Cu(2,2'-bpy)(MoO3)}(2)(L)](n)center dot 2nH(2)O (6) have been synthesized starting from p-xylylenediphosphonic acid (H4L) and 2,2'-bipyridine (2,2'-bpy) or 1,10-phenanthroline (1,10-phen) as secondary linkers and characterized by single crystal X-ray diffraction analysis, IR spectroscopy, and thermogravimetric (TG) analysis. All the complexes were synthesized by hydrothermal methods. A dinuclear motif (Cu-dimer) bridged by phosphonic acid represents a new class of simple building unit (SBU) in the construction of coordination architectures in metal phosphonate chemistry. The initial pH of the reaction mixture induced by the secondary linker plays an important role in the formation of the molecular phosphonates 1, 2, and 3. Temperature dependent hydrothermal synthesis of the compounds 1, 2, and 3 reveals the mechanism of the self assembly of the compounds based on the solubility of the phosphonic acid H4L. Two-dimensional coordination polymers 4, 5, and 6, which are formed by increasing the pH of the reaction mixture, comprise Cu-dimers as nodes, organic (H2L) and inorganic (Mo4O12) ligands as linkers. The void space-areas, created by the (4,4) connected nets in compounds 4 and 5, are occupied by lattice water molecules. Thus compounds 4 and 5 have the potential to accommodate guest species/molecules. Variable temperature magnetic studies of the compounds 3, 4, 5, and 6 reveal the antiferromagnetic interactions between the two Cu(II) ions in the eight membered ring, observed in their crystal structures. A density functional theory (DFT) calculation correlates the conformation of the Cu-dimer ring with the magnitude of the exchange parameter based on the torsion angle of the conformation.

In this manuscript, rotational spectra of four new isotopologues of the S-H center dot center dot center dot pi bonded C2H4 center dot center dot center dot H2S complex, i.e., C2D4 center dot center dot center dot H2S, C2D4 center dot center dot center dot D2S, C2D4 center dot center dot center dot HDS, and (CCH4)-C-13 center dot center dot center dot H2S have been reported and analyzed. All isotopologues except C2D4 center dot center dot center dot HDS show a four line pattern whereas a doubling of the transition frequencies was observed for C2D4 center dot center dot center dot HDS. These results together with our previous report on the title complex M. Goswami, P. K. Mandal, D. J. Ramdass, and E. Arunan, Chem. Phys. Lett. 393(1-3), 22-27 (2004)] confirm that both subunits (C2H4 and H2S) are involved in large amplitude motions leading to a splitting of each rotational transition to a quartet. Further, the results also confirm that the motions which are responsible for the observed splittings involve both monomers. Molecular symmetry group analysis, considering the interchange of equivalent H atoms in H2S and C2H4 could explain the observed four line pattern and their intensities in the microwave spectrum. In addition, hydride stretching fundamentals of the complex were measured using coherence-converted population transfer Fourier Transform Microwave-infrared (IR-MW double resonance) experiments in the S-H and C-H stretch regions. Changes in the tunneling splittings upon vibrational excitation are consistent with the isotopic dependence of pure rotational transitions. A complexation shift of 2.7-6.5 cm(-1) has been observed in the two fundamental S-H stretching modes of the H2S monomer in the complex. Vibrational pre-dissociation in the bound S-H stretch has been detected whereas the instrument-limited line-shapes in other S-H and C-H stretches indicate slower pre-dissociation rate. Some local perturbations in the vibrational spectra have been observed. Two combination bands have been observed corresponding to both the S-H stretching fundamentals and what appears to be the intermolecular stretching mode at 55 cm(-1). The tunneling splitting involved in the rotation of C2H4 unit has been deduced to be 1.5 GHz from the IR-MW results. In addition, ab initio barrier heights derived for different motions of the monomers support the experimental results and provide further insight into the motions causing the splitting. The static and dynamic pressure concentration isotherms (PCIs) of MmNi(5-x)Al(x). (x = 0, 0.3, 0.5 and 0.8) hydrides were measured at different temperatures using volumetric method. The effect of Al substitution on PCI and thermodynamic properties were studied. The plateau pressure and maximum hydrogen storage capacity decreased with Al content whereas reaction enthalpy increased. The plateau pressure, plateau slope and hysteresis effect was observed more for dynamic PCIs compared to static PCIs. Different mathematical models used for metal hydride-based thermodynamic devices simulation are compared to select suitable model for static and dynamic PCI simulation of MmNi(5)-based hydrides. Few important physical coefficients (partial molar volume, reaction enthalpy, reaction entropy, etc.) useful for development of thermodynamic devices were estimated. A relation has been proposed to correlate aluminium content and physical coefficients for the prediction of unknown PCI. The simulated and experimental PCIs were found matching closely for both static and dynamic conditions. Copyright (C) 2014, Hydrogen Energy Publications, LLC. Published by Elsevier Ltd. A workshop was convened by the MODEL Task Team and held June 23-28, 1996, in Nemuro, Japan, to develop the modeling requirements of the PICES Climate Change and Carrying Capacity (CCCC) Program. It was attended by over 40 scientists from all member nations of PICES. The principal objectives of the workshop were to • review the roles and limitations of modeling for the CCCC program; • propose the level of modeling required; and • provide a plan for how to promote these modeling activities. Secondary activities at the workshop included organisational meetings of the Regional comparisons (REX) and Basin-scale experiment (BASS) Task Teams, and a symposium by Japan-GLOBEC on “Development and application of new technologies for measurement and modeling in marine ecosystems.” This report serves as a record of the proceedings of this workshop. Chapter 1
Cyclobutanediyl has been studied in both its singlet and triplet states by ab initio electronic structure theory. The triplet, which is the ground state of the molecule, exists in both C_(2h) and C_(2v) forms, which interconvert via a C_s transition state. For the singlet, only a C_(2h) form is found. It passes, via a C_s transition state, onto the C_(2v) surface on which bicyclobutane is the only minimum. The ring-flipping (inversion) process in bicyclobutane includes the singlet biradical as an intermediate, and involves a novel, nonleast motion pathway. Semiclassical periodic orbit theory indicates that the various minima on both the singlet and triplet surfaces can interconvert via quantum mechanical tunneling.
Chapter 2
The dimethylenepolycyclobutadienes (n) are the non-Kekulé analogues of the classical acenes. Application of a variety of theoretical methods reveals several novel features of such structures. Most interesting is the emergence of a parity rule. When n is even, n is predicted to be a singlet, with n disjoint NBMOs. When n is odd, theory predicts a triplet ground state with (n+1) NBMOs that are not fully disjoint.
Chapter 3
Bi(cyclobutadienyl) (2), the cyclobutadiene analogue of biphenyl, and its homologues tri- (3) and tetra(cyclobutadienyl) (4) have been studied using electronic structure theory. Ab initio calculations on 2 reveal that the central bond is a true double bond, and that the structure is best thought of as two allyl radicals plus an ethylene. The singlet and triplet states are essentially degenerate. Trimer 3 is two allyls plus a dimethylenecyclobutanediyl, while 4 is two coplanar bi(cyclobutadienyl) units connected by a single bond. For both 3 and 4, the quintet, triplet, and singlet states are essentially degenerate, indicating that they are tetraradicals. The infinite polymer, polycyclobutadiene, has been studied by HMO, EHCO, and VEH methods. Several geometries based on the structures of 3 and 4 have been studied, and the band structures are quite intriguing. A novel crossing between the valence and conduction bands produces a small band gap and a high density of states at the Fermi level.
Chapter 4
At the level of Hückel theory, polyfulvene has a HOCO-LUCO degeneracy much like that seen in polyacetylene. Higher levels of theory remove the degeneracy, but the band gap (E_g) is predicted to be significantly smaller than analogous structures such as polythiophene and polypyrrole at the fulvenoid geometry. An alternative geometry, which we have termed quinoid, is also conceivable for polyfulvene, and it is predicted to have a much larger E_g. The effects of benzannelation to produce analogues of polyisothianaphthene have been evaluated. We propose a new model for such structures based on conventional orbital mixing arguments. Several of the proposed structures have quite interesting properties, which suggest that they are excellent candidates for conducting polymers.
Chapter 5
Theoretical studies of polydimethylenecyclobutene and polydiisopropylidene- cyclobutene reveal that, because of steric crowding, they cannot achieve a planar, fully conjugated structure in either their undoped or doped states. Rather, the structure consists of essentially orthogonal hexatriene units. Such a structure is incompatible with conventional conduction mechanisms involving polarons and bipolarons.

Notch signaling acts in many diverse developmental spatial patterning processes. To better understand why this particular pathway is employed where it is and how downstream feedbacks interact with the signaling system to drive patterning, we have pursued three aims: (i) to quantitatively measure the Notch system's signal input/output (I/O) relationship in cell culture, (ii) to use the quantitative I/O relationship to computationally predict patterning outcomes of downstream feedbacks, and (iii) to reconstitute a Notch-mediated lateral induction feedback (in which Notch signaling upregulates the expression of Delta) in cell culture. The quantitative Notch I/O relationship revealed that in addition to the trans-activation between Notch and Delta on neighboring cells there is also a strong, mutual cis-inactivation between Notch and Delta on the same cell. This feature tends to amplify small differences between cells. Incorporating our improved understanding of the signaling system into simulations of different types of downstream feedbacks and boundary conditions lent us several insights into their function. The Notch system converts a shallow gradient of Delta expression into a sharp band of Notch signaling without any sort of feedback at all, in a system motivated by the Drosophila wing vein. It also improves the robustness of lateral inhibition patterning, where signal downregulates ligand expression, by removing the requirement for explicit cooperativity in the feedback and permitting an exceptionally simple mechanism for the pattern. When coupled to a downstream lateral induction feedback, the Notch system supports the propagation of a signaling front across a tissue to convert a large area from one state to another with only a local source of initial stimulation. It is also capable of converting a slowly-varying gradient in parameters into a sharp delineation between high- and low-ligand populations of cells, a pattern reminiscent of smooth muscle specification around artery walls. Finally, by implementing a version of the lateral induction feedback architecture modified with the addition of an autoregulatory positive feedback loop, we were able to generate cells that produce enough cis ligand when stimulated by trans ligand to themselves transmit signal to neighboring cells, which is the hallmark of lateral induction.

Experimental and theoretical studies have been made of the electrothermal waves occurring in a nonequilibrium MHD plasma. These waves are caused by an instability that occurs when a plasma having a dependence of conductivity on current density is subjected to crossed electric and magnetic fields. Theoretically, these waves were studied by developing and solving the equations of a steady, one-dimensional nonuniformity in electron density. From these nonlinear equations, predictions of the maximum amplitude and of the half width of steady waves could be obtained. Experimentally, the waves were studied in a nonequilibrium discharge produced in a potassium-seeded argon plasma at 2000°K and 1 atm. pressure. The behavior of such a discharge with four different configurations of electrodes was determined from photographs, photomultiplier measurements, and voltage probes. These four configurations were chosen to produce steady waves, to check the stability of steady waves, and to observe the manifestation of the waves in a MHD generator or accelerator configuration.
Steady, one-dimensional waves were found to exist in a number of situations, and where they existed, their characteristics agreed with the predictions of the steady theory. Some extensions of this theory were necessary, however, to describe the transient phenomena occurring in the inlet region of a discharge transverse to the gas flow. It was also found that in a discharge away from the stabilizing effect of the electrodes, steady waves became unstable for large Hall parameters. Methods of prediction of the effective electrical conductivity and Hall parameter of a plasma with nonuniformities caused by the electrothermal waves were also studied. Using these methods and the values of amplitude predicted by the steady theory, it was found that the measured decrease in transverse conductivity of a MHD device, 50 per cent at a Hall parameter of 5, could be accounted for in terms of the electrothermal instability.

Based on the experimental data of scanning tunneling microscopy (STM), models of three-stranded braid-like DNAs composed by three kinds of base triplets AAA, TAT and GCA were constructed. We investigated the braid-like DNAs and their comparative tripler DNAs using a molecular mechanics method. The three strands of braid-like DNAs are proven equivalent, while those of tripler DNAs are not. The conformational energies for braid-like DNAs were found to be higher than that for tripler DNAs. Each period in one strand of braid-like DNA has 18 nucleotides, half of which are right-handed, while the other half are left-handed. Additional discussions concerning sugar puckering modes and the H-bonds are also included. (C) 1999 Elsevier Science B.V. All rights reserved.
