The linear-polarization optical property of CdSe quantum rods is studied in the framework of effective-mass envelope function theory. The effects of shape and magnetic field on the linear polarization factors are investigated. It is found that CdSe quantum spheres have negative polarization factors (xy-polarized emission)and quantum long rods with small radius have positive linear polarization factors (z-polarized emission). The z-direction is the direction of the c axis.Quantum long rods with large radius have negative linear polarization factors, due to the hexagonal crystal symmetry and the crystal field splitting energy. The linear polarization factors decrease and may change from a positive value to a negative value;i.e.,the z-polarized emissions decrease relative to xy-polarized emissions as the magnetic field applied along the z direction increases.

CdSe nanoclusters overcoated with CdS shell were prepared with macapoacetic acid as stabilizer. The optical properties of CdSe nanoclusters and the influence of CdS shell on the electronic structures of CdSe cores were studied by optical absorption, photoluminescence (PL) and photoluminescence excitation (PLE) spectroscopies. Based on PL and PLE results and the theoretical calculation on fine structure of bandedge exciton, a model of formation of excimer within the small clusters was proposed to explain the large Stokes shift of luminescence from absorption edge observed in PL results. A novel selenium source was developed to synthesize the size-controlled CdSe nanocrystals with relatively narrow size distribution successfully in a two-phase thermal approach. A highly reactive and aqueous soluble selenium source was provided by the reduction of selenite, and in this route the size of the nanocrystals can be adjusted by the reaction temperature and time. The size, crystalline structure and optical characteristics of these nanocrystals were investigated by transmission electron microscopy, X-ray powder diffraction, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, UV-vis spectroscopy, and photoluminescence spectroscopy. The influence factors for this approach were also discussed.

CdSe nanocrystals (NCs) are prepared in noncoordination solvents (1-octadecene (ODE) and paraffin liquid) with Ion g-chain primary alkylamine as the sole ligand, ODE-Se, and cadmium fatty acid salt as precursors. The obtained NCs meet the four fundamental parameters for high-quality NCs: high crystallinity, narrow size distribution, moderate photoluminescence quantum yield, and broad range size tunableness. Further, by simply regulating the relative molar ratio of alkylamine to cadmium precursor, the regular sized "nuclei" and final obtained NCs can be produced predictably within a certain size range.

In this contribution, common vegetable oils are used as coordination solvents for synthesis of high quality CdSe nanocrystals. Various shaped nanocrystals (quantum dots, quantum rods, multipods, arc structure, etc.) can be produced free of alkylphosphonic acids. Shape evolution can be induced by three types of selenium precursors: ODE-Se, VO-Se and TOP-Se (ODE, 1-octadecene; VO, vegetable oil; TOP, trio-n-octylphosphine). The quantum yields of NCs are 15-40%. The full width at half-maximum (fwhm) of the photoluminescence spectra are 27 +/- 1 nm for quantum clots and 23 +/- 1 nm for quantum rods/multipods.

Colloidal CdSe and CdS quantum dots were synthesized at low temperatures (60-90 degrees C) by a two-phase approach at a toluene-water interface. Oil-soluble cadmium myristate (Cd-MA) was used as cadmium source, and water-soluble Na2S, thiourea, NaHSe, Na2SeSO3, and selenourea were used as sulfur and selenium sources, respectively. When a cadmium precursor in toluene and a selenium precursor in water were mixed, CdSe nanocrystals were achieved at a toluene-water interface in the range of 1.2-3.2 nm in diameter. Moreover, we also synthesized highly luminescent CdSe/CdS core-shell quantum dots by a two-phase approach using poorly reactive thiourea as sulfur source in an autoclave at 140 degrees C or under normal pressure at 90 degrees C. Colloidal solutions of CdSe/CdS core-shell nanocrystals exhibit a photoluminescence quantum yield (PL QY) up to 42% relative to coumarin 6 at room temperature.
