It has been analyzed samples of portland cement (PC) with and without admixtures, samples of calcium aluminate cement (CAC) with different content of Al2O3 and specimens of concrete made with PC and CAC using High Resolution Gamma Spectrometry. The activity concentration index (I) is much less than 0.5 mSv y-1 for all the concrete specimens according to the Radiation protection document 112 of the European Commission. The PC without admixtures (CEM I 52,5 R) and the PC with addition of limestone (CEM II/BL 32,5 N) also have an I value much lower than 0.5 and the PC with the addition of fly ash and blast furnace slag (CEM IV/B (V) 32,5 N and III/A 42.5 N/SR) have an I value close to 0.6. The I value of the CAC used in the manufacture of structural precast concrete is of the order of 1 mSv y-1. Some of the CAC used in refractory concrete reaches a value close to 2 mSv y-1.

ABSTRACT This thesis has studied cellular mortars, focusing in testing aerated cement pastes with aluminum powder as expansive agent. The purpose is the development of a cementitious material with low thermal conductivity that can be used as thermal isolation. Inorganic nature of this material makes it non-combustible, in contrast with polymeric foams in market, whose application in ventilated double skin façade systems has been banned by building standards, both domestically and internationally. Possible uses for this material are pneumatically sprayed applications and precast panels. Two series of batches with aluminum powder have been tested: - WPC/CAC/CH series. Reference paste with white portland cement (WPC), calcium aluminate cement (CAC) and lime (CH) with 5:1:4 ratio. - OPC/CH series. Reference paste with portland cement with fly ash (OPC) and lime (CH) with 4:1 ratio. Metakaolin (MK) (10 and 20%) or sepiolite (SP) (1 and 2%) additions were used in reference pastes to characterize the effect in fresh and hardened mortar. Rheology in fresh pastes was studied, expansion process of pastes was analyzed, recording yield stress, entrained air and temperature values during expansion. Recorded values were used to discuss influence of additions on reaction kinetics of aluminum powder corrosion, that produces expansion.. Conclusion is that pozzolanic additions (FA and MK) and SP greatly reduce induction period, producing bigger pores and more entrained air. Relation between yield stress and entrained air has been also analyzed, observing that the bigger yield stress at beginning of expansion, the smaller pores size and the lower entrained air values. Finally density and water retention of fresh mortars were obtained. Pore network in hardened aerated cement pastes was characterized by imbibition methods providing true, bulk and relative density, and providing also open, closed and total porosity. Finally, pore system imaging were obtained with computerized axial tomography to study porosimetry of specimens. Pore network characterization was useful to complete facts analysis observed in expansion of fresh mortars. Influence of pore network in thermal conductivity, checked in hot box, was analyzed comparing with those existing values in cellular mortar and polymeric foams researches. It was concluded that thermal conductivity values achieved are close to minimum possible in a cementitious cellular material. Microstructure was studied with Scanning Electron Microscopy, X-Ray Diffractometry and TG-DTA analysis, observing that hydration phases found, are those produced in non aerated mortar. SEM imaging and ultrasound results were useful to analyze shrinkage microcracks in aerated cement pastes, concluding that microcrack presence in specimens with MK and SP additions were reduced.

The strategic incorporation of bioresorbable polymeric additives to calcium-deficient hydroxyapatite cement may provide short-term structural reinforcement and modify the modulus to closer match bone. The longer-term resorption properties may also be improved, creating pathways for bone in-growth. The aim of this study was to investigate the resorption process of a calcium phosphate cement system containing either in polyglycolic acid tri-methylene carbonate particles or polyglycolic acid fibres. This was achieved by in vitro aging in physiological conditions (phosphate buffered solution at 37°C) over 12 weeks. The unreinforced CPC exhibited an increase in compressive strength at 12 weeks, however catastrophic failure was observed above a critical loading. The fracture behaviour of cement was improved by the incorporation of PGA fibres; the cement retained its cohesive structure after critical loading. Gravimetric analysis and scanning electron microscopy showed a large proportion of the fibres had resorbed after 12 weeks allowing for the increased cement porosity, which could facilitate cell infiltration and faster integration of natural bone. Incorporating the particulate additives in the cement did not provide any mechanism for mechanical property augmentation or did not demonstrate any appreciable level of resorption after 12 weeks.

Objectives. To evaluate the response of the pulpo-dentin complex following application of a resin-modified glass-ionomer cement or an adhesive system in deep cavities performed in human teeth.Methods. Deep class V cavities were prepared on the buccal surface of 26 premolars. In Group I the cavity walls (dentin) and enamel were conditioned with 32% phosphoric acid and the dentin adhesive system One Step (Bisco, Inc., Itasca, IL, USA) was applied. In Groups 2 and 3, before total etching and application of bonding agent, the cavity floor was lined with the resin-modified glass-ionomer cement-Vitrebond (3M ESPE Dental Products Division, St. Paul, MN, USA) or the calcium hydroxide cement-Dycal (control group, Dentsply, Mildford, DE, USA), respectively. The cavities were restored using light-cured Z-100 composite resin (3M ESPE). The teeth were extracted between 5 and 30 days and prepared for microscopic assessment. Serial sections were stained with H/E, Masson's trichrome, and Brown and Brenn techniques.Results. In Group 1, the inflammatory response was more evident than in Groups 2 and 3. Diffusion of dental material components across dentinal tubules was observed only in Group 1, in which the intensity of the pulp response increased as the remaining dentin thickness decreased. Bacteria were evidenced in the lateral walls of two samples (Group 2) which exhibited no inflammatory response or tissue disorganization.Conclusions. Based on the experimental conditions, it was concluded total acid etching followed by application of One Step bonding agent cannot be recommended as adequate procedures. In this clinical condition the cavity walls should be lined with a biocompatible dental material, such as Vitrebond or Dycal. 2003 Academy of Dental Materials. Published by Elsevier Ltd. Castor oil bean cement (COB) is a new material that has been used as an endodontic sealer, and is a candidate material for direct pulp capping. Objective: The purpose of this study was to evaluate the biocompatibility of a new formulation of COB compared to calcium hydroxide cement (CH) and a control group without any material, in the subcutaneous tissue of rats. Material and Methods: The materials were prepared, packed into polyethylene tubes, and implanted in the rat dorsal subcutaneous tissue. Animals were sacrificed at the 7th and 50th days after implantation. A quantitative analysis of inflammatory cells was performed and data were subjected to ANOVA and Tukey's tests at 5% significance level. Results: Comparing the mean number of inflammatory cells between the two experimental groups (COB and CH) and the control group, statistically significant difference (p=0.0001) was observed at 7 and 50 days. There were no significant differences (p=0.111) between tissue reaction to CH (382 inflammatory cells) and COB (330 inflammatory cells) after 7 days. After 50 days, significantly more inflammatory cells (p=0.02) were observed in the CH group (404 inflammatory cells) than in the COB group (177 inflammatory cells). Conclusions: These results demonstrate that the COB cement induces less inflammatory response within long periods.

Objectives: To compare the response of human dental pulp capped with a mineral trioxide aggregate (MTA) and Ca(OH) 2 powder. Methods and Material: Pulp exposures were performed on the occlusal floor of 40 permanent premolars. The pulp was then capped with either Ca(OH) 2 powder (CH) or MTA and restored with resin composite. After 30 days (groups CH30 and MTA30) and 60 days (groups CH60 and MTA60), the teeth were extracted and processed for HE and categorized in a histological score system. The data were subjected to Kruskal-Wallis and Conover tests (α=0.05). Results: In regard to dentin bridge formation, CH30 showed a tendency towards superior performance compared to MTA30 (p>0.05), although the products showed comparable results at day 60. In the item Inflammation and General State of the Pulp (p>0.05), CH showed a tendency towards presenting a higher inflammatory response. In the item Other Pulpal Findings, MTA and Ca(OH) 2 showed equal and excellent performance after 30 and 60 days (p>0.05). Conclusion: After 30 days, Ca(OH) 2 powder covered with calcium hydroxide cement showed faster hard tissue bridge formation compared to MTA. After 60 days, Ca(OH) 2 powder or MTA materials showed a similar and excellent histological response with the formation of a hard tissue bridge in almost all cases with low inflammatory infiltrate. © Operative Dentistry, 2008.

ABSTRACT This dissertation presents the results of a research on inerting fly ash from urban solid waste and its subsequent encapsulation in mortar matrixes. The inerting of this hazardous toxic waste, as well as its valorization as a by-product has been achieved. In this way, a new "raw material" is available through a simple process and the toxic and hazardous waste is eliminated, and consequently, conservation of alternative natural resources is strengthened. Chemical analysis of the ashes analyzed shows high concentrations of soluble chlorides, Zn and Pb. An inerting process of fly ash with sodium bicarbonate (NaHCO3) has been developed which reduces 99% the content of chlorides and maintains pH at optimal values, so that the concentration of heavy metals in the leachate is minimum, due to its stabilization in the form of insoluble carbonates. Mortars with four different types of cements (CEM-I, CEM-II, CAC and CSA) have been developed by the addition of inertized fly ash in the form of carbonates, in the proportion of 10% in weight of the aggregates used. The samples tested include different proportions in the use of aggregates with different sizes (0/2 and 0/4), and in the cement/aggregate ratio (1/1 and 1/3). Physical/mechanical properties of these mortars have been studied through workability, dimensional stability, carbonation, porosity and mechanic strength tests. Leaching tests of Zn, Pb, Cu and Cd ions are also being performed on monolithic samples of the best behavioral mortars. The content in leachated heavy metal ions is being analyzed through stripping voltammetry determination. Conclusions drawn are that the tested CAC and CSA cement mortars present much better behavior than those of CEM-I and CEM-II cement. The results are especially remarkable for the CAC cement mortars, improving reference mortars compression strengths in more than 48%, and also bending strengths in more than 67%. Leaching tests confirm that the encapsulation of Zn and Pb is achieved and leachate of both ions is mitigated within the mortar matrixes. For the above stated reasons, it might be concluded that mortars made with calcium aluminate cements or calcium sulfoaluminate with the incorporation of treated fly ash, may be perfectly valid for uses in which a fast-curing product, with high initial strength and drying shrinkage compensation with a high dimensional stability is required. Based on this, the material could be used as repair mortar for structures, roads and industrial pavements requiring high performance, such as: industrial floorings, landing tracks, parking lots, etc. Alternatively, it could also be used in the manufacture of prefabricated elements without structural reinforcement, given its high bending strength.

Brushite cements differ from apatite-forming compositions by consuming a lot of water in their setting reaction whereas apatite-forming cements consume little or no water at all. Only such cement systems that consume water during setting can theoretically produce near-zero porosity ceramics. This study aimed to produce such a brushite ceramic and investigated whether near elimination of porosity would prevent a burst release profile of incorporated antibiotics that is common to prior calcium phosphate cement delivery matrices. Through adjustment of the powder technological properties of the powder reactants, that is particle size and particle size distribution, and by adjusting citric acid concentration of the liquid phase to 800 mM, a relative porosity of as low as 11% of the brushite cement matrix could be achieved (a 60% reduction compared to previous studies), resulting in a wet unprecompacted compressive strength of 52 MPa (representing a more than 100% increase to previously reported results) with a workable setting time of 4.5 min of the cement paste. Up to 2 wt.% of vancomycin and ciprofloxacin could be incorporated into the cement system without loss of wet compressive strength. It was found that drug release rates could be controlled by the adjustable relative porosity of the cement system and burst release could be minimized and an almost linear release achieved, but the solubility of the antibiotic (vancomycin > ciprofloxacin) appeared also to be a crucial factor.

In this study the effect of structure and amount of polyglactin fibre incorporation into a brushite forming calcium phosphate cement system and the effect of mechanical compaction on the fibre modified system were investigated. In comparison the effect of resorbable polycaprolactone surface coating of cement specimens was investigated. The results showed that, apart from the mechanical properties of the reinforcing material, the structure of the incorporated fibres, regular or random, is crucial for the resulting flexural strength and modulus of elasticity. Fibre reinforcement could also be combined with mechanical compaction of the cement/fibre composite paste leading to a possible 7-fold increase in flexural strength or an almost 5-fold increase in modulus of elasticity. Reinforcement of the tensile surface of cement grafts may ultimately improve strength where required, especially in conjunction with bone fixation devices. © 2005 Acta Materialia Inc. Bioceramics play an important role in repairing and regenerating bone defects. Annually, more than 500,000 bone graft procedures are performed in the United states and approximately 2.2 million are conducted worldwide. The estimated cost of these procedures approaches $2.5billion per year. Around 60% of the bone graft substitutes available on the market involve bioceramics. It is reported that bioceramics in the world market increase by 9% per year. For this reason, the research of bioceramics has been one of the most active areas during, the past several years. Considering the significant importance of bioceramics, our goal was to compile this book to review the latest research advances in the field of bioceramics. The text also summarizes our work during the past 10 years in an effort to share innovative concepts, design of bioceramisc, and methods for material synthesis and drug delivery. We anticipate that this text will provide some useful information and guidance in the bioceramics field for biomedical engineering researchers and material scientists. Information on novel mesoporous bioactive glasses and silicate-based ceramics for bone regeneration and drug delivery are presented. Mesoporous bioactive glasses have shown multifunctional characteristics of bone regeneration and drug delivery due to their special mesopore structures, whereas silicated-based bioceramics, as typical third-generation biomaterials, possess significant osteostimulation properties. Silica nanospheres with a core-shell structure and specific properties for controllable drug delivery have been carefully reviewed-a variety of advanced synthetic strategies have been developed to construct functional mesoporous silica nanoparticles with a core-shell structure, including hollow, magnetic, or luminescent, and other multifunctional core-shell mesoporous silica nanoparticles. In addition, multifunctional drug delivery systems based on these nanoparticles have been designed and optimized to deliver the drugs into the targeted organs or cells, with a controllable release fashioned by virtue of various internal and external triggers. The novel 3D-printing technique to prepare advanced bioceramic scaffolds for bone tissue engineering applications has been highlighted, including the preparation, mechanical strength, and biological properties of 3D-printed porous scaffolds of calcium phosphate cement and silicate bioceramics. Three-dimensional printing techniques offer improved large-pore structure and mechanical strength. In addition , biomimetic preparation and controllable crystal growth as well as biomineralization of bioceramics are summarized, showing the latest research progress in this area. Finally, inorganic and organic composite materials are reviewed for bone regeneration and gene delivery. Bioactive inorganic and organic composite materials offer unique biological, electrical, and mechanical properties for designing excellent bone regeneration or gene delivery systems. It is our sincere hope that this book will updated the reader as to the research progress of bioceramics and their applications in bone repair and regeneration. It will be the best reward to all the contributors of this book if their efforts herein in some way help reader in any part of their study, research, and career development.

The blue long-lasting phosphorescence (LLP) phenomenon was observed for Eu2+-doped SrO-B2O3 glasses prepared in the reducing atmosphere. The phosphorescence peaks at about 450 nm due to the 4f5d -> 4f transition of Eu2+. With the doping of different amounts of Eu2+, the concentration-quenching phenomenon was observed for both the LLP and photoluminescence of the glasses, and the critical concentration for the two cases was same, i.e., 0.02 mol% Eu2+. And by the investigation of the TL curves, the content of Eu2+ had an effect on the trap depth of the samples. At last the possible mechanism of the LLP of the samples was suggested.

Objective. This study evaluated histopathologically the response of pulp and periradicular tissues after pulp capping with an all-in-one self-etching adhesive system in dogs` teeth. Study design. Forty teeth of 4 dogs were assigned to 3 groups according to the pulp capping material: G1 (n = 20): self-etching adhesive system; G2 (n = 10): Ca(OH)(2); G3 (n = 10): zinc oxide-eugenol. The animals were killed 7 and 70 days after pulp capping. The pieces containing the pulp-capped teeth were removed and processed for histologic analysis. Results. At 7 days, no dentin bridge formation was observed; G1 and G3 exhibited inflammatory pulpal alterations, whereas G2 presented only mild inflammatory infiltrate in the pulp tissue adjacent to the capping material, the remainder being intact. At 70 days, no specimen in G1 or G3 presented dentin bridge formation. The remaining pulp tissue exhibited severe inflammatory alterations and areas of necrosis. In G2, all specimens showed dentin bridge formation and absence of inflammation and mineralized tissue resorption. No bacteria were identified using Brown and Brenn staining techniques in all 3 groups at any observation period. Conclusion. According to the conditions of this study, direct pulp capping with the self-etching adhesive system did not allow pulp tissue repair and failed histopathologically in 100% of the cases.
