Ceria, because of its excellent redox behavior and oxygen storage capacity, is used as a catalyst for several technologically important reactions. In the present study, different morphologies of nano-CeO2 (rods, cubes, octahedra) were synthesized using the hydrothermal route. An ultrafast microwave-assisted method was used to efficiently attach Pt particles to the CeO2 polyhedra. These nanohybrids were tested as catalysts for the CO oxidation reaction. The CeO2/Pt catalyst with nanorods as the support was found to be the most active catalyst. XPS and IR spectroscopy measurements were carried out in order to obtain a mechanistic understanding and it was observed that the adsorbed carbonates with lower stability on the reactive planes of nanorods and cubes are the major contributor to this enhanced catalytic activity.

Ti0.97Pt0.032+O1.97 and Ti0.97Pt0.034+O2 have been synthesized by a solution combustion method using alanine and glycine as the fuels, respectively. Both crystallize in anatase TiO2 structure with 15 nm average crystallite size. X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) confirmed Pt ions are in the 2+ state in Ti0.97Pt0.03O1.97 (alanine) and 4+ state in Ti0.97Pt0.03O2 (glycine). The rate of CO oxidation occurring over Ti0.97Pt0.032+O1.97 (0.76 mu mol.g(-1).s(-1)) is similar to 10, times more than that over Ti0.97Pt0.034+O2 at 60 degrees C (0.08 mu mol.g(-1).s(-1)). A large shift in 100% hydrocarbons conversion to lower temperature was observed for Pt2+ ion-substituted TiO2 relative 10 that for Pt4+ ion-substituted TiO2. After reoxidation of the reduced compound by H-2 as well as CO, Pt ions are stabilized in mixed valences, 2+ and 4+ states. The role of oxide ion vacancy has been demonstrated by CO oxidation and H-2 + O-2 recombination reactions in the presence and absence of O-2. We analyze the activated lattice oxygens upon substitution of Pt2+ and Pt4+ ions in TiO2, using first-principles density functional theory (DFT) calculations with supercells of Ti31Pt1O63, Ti30Pt2O62, and Ti29Pt3O61 for Pt2+ ion substitution and Ti31Pt1O64, Ti30Pt2O62, and Ti29Pt3O61 for Pt4+ ion substitution in TiO2. We find that the local structure of Pt2+ ion has a distorted square planar geometry and that of Pt4+ ion has an octahedral geometry similar to that of Ti4+ ion in pure TiO2. The change in coordination of Pt2+ ion gives rise to weakly bonded oxygens, and these oxygens are involved in high rates of catalytic reaction. Thus, the high catalytic activity results from synergistic roles of Pt2+ ion and oxide ion vacancy and weakly bonded lattice oxygen.

Reaction of the salicylhydrazone of 2-hydroxy-1-naphthaldehyde (H2L1), anthranylhydrazone of 2hydroxy-l-naphthaldehyde (H2L2), benzoylhydrazone of 2-hydroxy-1-acetonaphthone (H2L3) and anthranylhydrazone of 2-hydroxy-1-acetonaphthone (H2L4; general abbreviation H2L) with MoO2(acac)21 afforded a series of 5- and 6- coordinate Mo(VI) complexes of the type MoO2L1-2(ROH)] where R = C2H5 (1) and CH3 (2)], and MoO2L3-4] (3 and 4). The substrate binding capacity of 1 has been demonstrated by the formation of one mononuclear mixed-ligand dioxidomolybdenum complex MoO2L1(Q)] (where Q= gamma-picoline (la)). Molecular structure of all the complexes (I, la, 2,3 and 4) is determined by X-ray crystallography, demonstrating the dibasic tridentate behavior of ligands. All the complexes show two irreversible reductive responses within the potential window -0.73 to -1.08 V, due to Movl/Mov and Mov/Mow processes. Catalytic potential of these complexes was tested for the oxidation of benzoin using 30% aqueous H2O2 as an oxidant in methanol. At least four reaction products, benzoic acid, benzaldehydedimethylacetal, methyl benzoate and benzil were obtained with the 95-99% conversion under optimized reaction conditions. Oxidative bromination of salicylaldehyde, a functional mimic of haloperoxidases, in aqueous 1-1202/KEr in the presence of HC1O4 at room temperature has also been carried out successfully. Reaction of cobalt(II) perchlorate hexahydrate with a potentially tetradentate Schiff base ligand, HL (2-methoxy-6-(2-diethylaminoethylimino)methyl]phenol) in presence of sodium azide and sodium thiocyanate yields two complexes Co( L)( HL)(N-3)]center dot ClO4 ( 1) and Co( L)( HL)(NCS)] center dot ClO4 ( 2); both being characterized by different physicochemical methods. Crystal structure of 1 was determined by single crystal X-ray diffraction while that of 2 was reported earlier. In 1, the central cobalt(III) adopts slightly distorted octahedral geometry with same donor set to that of 2. Catalytic efficacy of the complexes towards epoxidation of different alkenes under aerobic condition were investigated in homogeneous medium which reveals that 1 is better catalyst than 2 with respect to alkene oxidation, reflected from the turn over frequencies (TOF) measured at an optimum temperature of 60 degrees C in acetonitrile. Large-scale production of hydrogen gas by water electrolysis is hindered by the sluggish kinetics of oxygen evolution reaction (OER) at the anode. The development of a highly active and stable catalyst for OER is a challenging task. Electrochemically prepared amorphous metal-based catalysts have gained wide attention after the recent discovery of a cnbalt-phosphate (Co-Pi) catalyst: Herein, an amorphous iridium-phosphate (Ir-Pi) is investigated as an oxygen evolution catalyst. The catalyst is prepared by the anodic polarization of carbon paper electrodes in neutral phosphate buffer solutions containing IrCl3. The Ir-Pi film deposited on the substrate has significant amounts of phosphate and It centers in an oxidation state higher than +4. Phosphate plays a significant role in the deposition of the catalyst and also in its activity toward OER. The onset potential of OER on the Ir-Pi is about 150 mV lower in comparison with the Co-Pi under identical experimental conditions. Thus, Ir-Pi is a promising catalyst for electrochemical oxidation of water.

Iridium-functionalized multiwalled carbon nanotubes (Ir-MWNT) are the future catalyst support material for hydrazine fuel decomposition. The present work demonstrates decoration of iridium particle on iron-encapsulated multiwalled carbon nanotubes (MWNT) by wet impregnation method in the absence of any stabilizer. Electron microscopy studies reveal the coated iridium particle size in the range of 5-10 nm. Elemental analysis by energy dispersive X-ray diffraction confirms 21 wt% of Ir coated over MWNT. X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) shows 4f(5/2) and 4f(7/2) lines of iridium and confirms the metallic nature. The catalytic activity of Ir-MWNT/Shell 405 combination is performed in 1 N hydrazine micro-thrusters. The thruster performance shows increase in chamber pressure and decrease in chamber temperature when compared to Shell 405 alone. This enhanced performance is due to high thermal conducting nature of MWNTs and the presence of Ir active sites over MWNTs.

MoNi/gamma-Al2O3 catalysts were prepared by the impregnation method. The catalyst samples were characterized by XRD and TPR. The effects of Mo promoter content and the catalyst reducing temperature Oil hydrotreatment activity of the catalyst were studied under 200 degrees C and 3 MPa hydrogen pressure using acetic acid as the model compound. The XRD results indicate that the addition of Mo promoter is beneficial to the uniformity of nickel species on the catalyst and decreases the Interaction between nickel species and the support Which results in the decrease the of NiAl2O4 spinel formation. The addition of Mo promoter also decreases the reducing temperature of the catalyst. After the catalyst of 0.06 MoNi/gamma-Al2O3 being reduced Under the atmosphere of H-2/N-2(5/95, V/V), nickel oxide was reduced to Ni-0. The reaction was promoted obviously upon the addition of the MoNi/gamma-Al2O3 catalyst reduced at 600 degrees C. The Mo-modified Ni/gamma-Al2O3 catalyst reduced at 600 degrees C displayed the highest activity during the reaction, the conversion of acetic acid reached the highest point of 33.2%. The products included ethyl acetate and water.

Aluminum was incorporated into the mesoporous framework of ethane-silica by one-pot condensation of Al(OiPr)(3) with 1,2-bis(trimethoxysilyl)ethane using octadecyltrimethylammonium chloride as surfactant. Powder X-ray diffraction patterns, nitrogen sorption analysis, and TEM results reveal the formation of an ordered mesoporous material with uniform porosity. Al-27 MAS NMR confirms the incorporation of aluminum in the framework. The synthesized materials exhibit extremely high hydrothermal stability in boiling water (no obvious change of mesostructure and textural properties was observed even after refluxing in water for 100 h), which could be mainly contributed to the ethane-bridged mesoporous framework. The aluminum-containing mesoporous ethane-silicas are efficient catalysts for the alkylation of 2,4-di-tert-butylphenol by cinnamyl alcohol to yield a flavan.

A series of novel ferrocenylphosphine-ketimine ligands 6 were prepared by reaction of (R,S-p)-PPFNH2-R or (S,S-p)-PPFNH2 with a variety of m-substituted acetophenones. A different catalytic activity was observed between ferrocenylphosphine-ketimine ligands and corresponding aldimine ligands. The efficiency and diastereomeric impact of these ferrocenylphosphine-ketimine ligands in Pd-catalyzed asymmetric allylic alkylation were first investigated, and higher enantioselectivity of over 98% e.e. with 95% yield was obtained by the use of ferrocenylphosphine-ketimine ligands. However, in Rh-catalyzed asymmetric hydrosilylation of aryl ketones, only 42% e.e. was obtained by the use of ferrocenylphosphine-ketimine ligands compared to 90% e.e. with the use of aldimine ligands. Ce1-XNiXO2 oxides with X varying from 0.05 to 0.5 were prepared by different methods and characterized by XRD and TPR techniques. Ce(0.7)Mi(0.3)O(2) sample prepared by sol-gel method shows the highest reducibility and the highest catalytic activity for methane combustion. Three kinds of Ni phases co-exist in the Ce1-XNiXO2 catalysts prepared by sol-gel method: (i) aggregated NiO on the support CeO2, (ii) highly dispersed NiO with strong interaction with CeO2 and (iii) Ni atoms incorporated into CeO2 lattice. The distribution of different Ni species strongly depends on the preparation methods. The highly dispersed NiO shows the highest activity for methane combustion. The NiO aggregated on the support CeO2 shows lower catalytic activity for methane combustion, while the least catalytic activity is found for the Ni species incorporated into CeO2. Any oxygen vacancy formed in CeO2 lattice due to the incorporating of Ni atoms adsorbs and activates the molecular oxygen to form active oxygen species. So the highest catalytic activity for methane combustion on Ce0.7Ni0.3O2 catalyst is attributed not only to the highly dispersed Ni species but also to the more active oxygen species formed.
