Frequency upconversion fluorescence property of Er3+-doped oxychloride germanate glass is investigated. Intense green and red emissions centred at 525, 546, and 657nm, corresponding to the transitions H-2(11/2) -> I-4(15/2), S-4(3/2) -> 4I(15/2), and F-4(9/2) -> I-4(15/2), respectively, were simultaneously observed at room temperature. The quadratic dependence of the 525, 546, and 657nm emissions on excitation power indicates that a two-photon absorption process occurs under 975nm laser diode (LD) excitation. The Raman spectrum investigation indicates that oxychloride germanate glass has the maximum phonon energy at similar to 805 cm(-1). The thermal stability of this oxychloride germanate glass is evaluated by differential scanning calorimetry, and thermal stability factor Delta T (Delta T = T-x-T-g) is 187 degrees C. Intense upconversion luminescence and good thermal stability indicate that Er3+-doped oxychloride germanate glass is a promising upconversion laser material.

New lithium-barium-lead-bismuth glasses with low OH- concentration have been obtained. The role of the different components in the glass formation has been explored from the thermal, density, and refractive index measurements. The T-g, T-x, and T-x-T-g values of these glasses are in the range of 358-400, 453-575, and 87-197 degreesC, respectively. The densities (p) and refractive indices of these glasses are mainly affected by Bi2O3 and PbO contents. A wide transmitting window from visible to infrared (IR) regions for some compositions of these glasses has been observed, which makes them appealing candidates for different optical applications such as upconverting phosphors, new laser materials, optical waveguides, and crystal-free fibre drawing. Tm3+/Yb3+-codoped gernianate-niobic (GN) and germanium-bismuth (GB) glasses have been synthesized by conventional ruching and quenching method. Intense blue and weak red emissions centered at 477 and 650 nm, corresponding to the transitions (1)G(4)->H-3(6) and (1)G(4)->H-3(4), respectively, were observed at room temperature. The possible Up-conversion mechanisms are discussed and estimated. GN glass showed a weaker up-conversion emission than GB glass, which is inconsistent with the prediction from the difference of maximum phonon energy between GN and GB glasses. In this paper, Raman spectroscopy was employed to investigate the origin of the difference in up-conversion luminescence in the two glasses. Compared with phonon side-band spectroscopy, Raman spectroscopy extracts more information including both phonon energy and phonon density. For the first time, our results reveal that, besides the maximum phonon energy, the phonon density of host glasses is also an important factor in determining the up-conversion efficiency. Novel Er3+-doped bismuth lead strontiam glass was fabricated and characterized, and the absorption spectrum and upconversion spectrum of the glass were studied. The Judd-Ofelt intensity parameters Omega(t)(t = 2, 4, 6) were found to be Omega(2) = 3.27 x 10(-20) cm(2), Omega(4) = 1.15 x 10(-20) cm(2), and Omega(6) = 0.38 x 10(-20) cm(2). The oscillator strength, the spontaneous transition probabilities, the fluorescence branching ratios, and excited state lifetimes were also measured and calculated. The upconversion emission intensity varies with the power of infrared excitation intensity. A plot of log I-up vs log I-IR yields a straight line with slope 1.86, 1.88 and 1.85, corresponding to 525, 546, and 657 nm emission bands, respectively, which indicates that a two-photon process for the red and green emission.

Near-infrared luminescence is observed from bismuth-doped GeS2-Ga2S3 chalcogenide glasses excited by an 808 nm laser diode. The emission peak with a maximum at about 1260 nm is observed in 80GeS(2)-20Ga(2)S(3):0.5Bi glass and it shifts toward the long wavelength with the addition of Bi gradually. The full width of half maximum (FWHM) is about 200 nm. The broadband infrared luminescence of Bi-doped GeS2-Ga2S3 chalcogenide glasses may be predominantly originated from the low valence state of Bi, such as Bi+. Raman scattering is also conducted to clarify the structure of glasses. These Bi-doped GeS2-Ga2S3 chalcogenide glasses can be applied potentially in novel broadband optical fibre amplifiers and broadly tunable laser in optical communication system.

We report near infrared broadband emission of bismuth-doped barium-aluminum-borate glasses. The broadband emission covers 1.3 mum window in optical telecommunication systems. And it possesses wide full width at half maximum (FWHM) of similar to 200nm and long lifetime as long as 350 mus. The luminescent properties are quite sensitive to glass compositions and excitation wavelengths. Based on energy matching conditions, we suggest that the infrared emission may be ascribed to P-3(1) --> P-3(0) transition of Bi+. The broad infrared emission characteristics of this material indicate that it might be a promising candidate for broadband optical fiber amplifiers and tunable lasers. The broadband luminescence covering 1.2-1.6 mu m was observed from bismuth and aluminum co-doped germanium oxide glasses pumped by 808 nm laser at room temperature. The spectroscopic properties of GeO2:Bi,Al glasses strongly depend on the glass compositions and the pumping sources. To a certain extent, the Al3+ ions play as dispersing reagent for the infrared-emission centers in the GeO2:Bi,Al glasses. The broad infrared luminescence with a full width at half maximum larger than 200 nm and a lifetime longer than 200 mu s possesses these glasses with the potential applications in broadly tunable laser sources and ultra-broadband fiber amplifiers in optical communication field. Near-infrared broadband emission from bismuth-tantalum-codoped germanium oxide glasses was observed at room temperature when the glasses were pumped by an 808 nm laser diode. The emission band covered the 0, E, S, C, and L bands (1260-1625 nm), with a maximum peak at similar to 1310 nm, a FWHM broader than 400 nm, and a lifetime longer than 200 lis. The observed broadband luminescence was attributed to bismuth clusters in the glasses. Bismuth-tantalum-codoped germanium oxide glass might be promising as amplification media for broadly tunable lasers and wideband amplifiers in optical communications. Bismuth germanate glasses are interesting materials due to their physical properties and their unique structural characteristics caused by the coordination changes of bismuth and germanium atoms. Glasses of the bismuth germanate system were prepared by melting/molding method and were investigated concerning their thermal and structural properties. The structural analysis of the samples was carried out by micro-Raman and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopes. It was observed that the glass structure is formed basically by GeO(4) tetrahedral units also having the formation of the GeO(6) octahedral units. BiO(2) was considered a network former by observing the presence of octahedral BiO(6) and pyramidal BiO(3) groups in the local structure of the samples. An absorption band observed at 1103 cm(-1) in the IR spectrum of the undoped glass was attributed to the Bi-O-Ge and/or Bi-O-Bi linkage vibration. The said band shifted to lower wavenumbers after the CeO(2) addition thus reflecting changes in the glass network. Cerium oxide was an efficient oxidant agent to prevent the darkening of the glasses which was probably associated to the reduction of Bi ions. However, CeO(2) was incorporated as a local network modifier in the glass structure even at concentrations of 0.2 mol%. (C) 2010 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

Microsphere systems with the ideal properties for bone regeneration need to be bioactive, and at the same time possess the capacity for controlled protein/drug-delivery; however, the current crop of microsphere system fails to fulfill these properties. The aim of this study was to develop a novel protein-delivery system of bioactive mesoporous glass (MBG) microspheres by a biomimetic method through controlling the density of apatite on the surface of microspheres, for potential bone tissue regeneration. MBG microspheres were prepared by using the method of alginate cross-linking with Ca2+ ions. The cellular bioactivity of MBG microspheres was evaluated by investigating the proliferation and attachment of bone marrow stromal cell (BMSC). The loading efficiency and release kinetics of bovine serum albumin (BSA) on MBG microspheres were investigated after coprecipitating with biomimetic apatite in simulated body fluids (SBF). The results showed that MBG microspheres supported BMSC attachment and the Si containing ionic products from MBG microspheres stimulated BMSCs proliferation. The density of apatite on MBG microspheres increased with the length of soaking time in SBF. BSA-loading efficiency of MBG was significantly enhanced by co-precipitating with apatite. Furthermore, the loading efficiency and release kinetics of BSA could be controlled by controlling the density of apatite formed on MBG microspheres. Our results suggest that MBG microspheres are a promising protein-delivery system as a filling material for bone defect healing and regeneration.

Several specimens of Libyan Desert Glass (LDG), an enigmatic natural glass from Egypt, were subjected to investigation by micro-Raman spectroscopy. The spectra of inclusions inside the LDG samples were successfully measured through the layers of glass and the mineral species were identified on this basis. The presence of cristobalite as typical for high-temperature melt products was confirmed, together with co-existing quartz. TiO2 was determined in two polymorphic species, rutile and anatase. Micro-Raman spectroscopy proved also the presence of minerals unusual for high-temperature glasses such as anhydrite and aragonite.

A novel Zr-based bulk metallic glass composite was fabricated using stainless steel capillaries as the reinforcement. Large plasticity (14%) was achieved in the composite with a reinforcement volume fraction of 38%. The high plasticity observed can be attributed to the formation of small glass fibers encapsulated by the steel capillaries, which promotes multiple shear bands in both metallic glass matrix and the fibers themselves. A new parameter was also proposed to approximately evaluate the reinforcement efficiency.

The Raman spectrum of atelestite Bi2O(OH)(AsO4), a hydroxy-arsenate mineral containing bismuth, has been studied in terms of spectra-structure relations. The studied spectrum is compared with the Raman spectrum of atelestite downloaded from the RRUFF database. The sharp intense band at 834 cm-1 is assigned to the 1 AsO43- (A1) symmetric stretching mode and the three bands at 767, 782 and 802 cm-1 to the 3 AsO43- antisymmetric stretching modes. The bands at 310, 324, 353, 370, 395, 450, 480 and 623 cm-1 are assigned to the corresponding ν4 and ν2 bending modes and Bi-O-Bi (vibration of bridging oxygen) and Bi-O (vibration of non-bridging oxygen) stretching vibrations. Lattice modes are observed at 172, 199 and 218 cm-1. A broad low intensity band at 3095 cm-1 is attributed to the hydrogen bonded OH units in the atelestite structure. A weak band at 1082 cm-1 is assigned to  (Bi-OH) vibration.
