The Tahiti lime appears very susceptible to attack by post-harvest diseases, primarily by the fungi Penicillium and Phomopsis, and also because of its high sensitivity to storage at low temperatures. In order to reduce such damage, the present study aimed to verify the efficiency of heat treatment and disinfection of pathogens in the prevention of post-harvest chilling injury of this cultivar and to compare this treatment with other products using the conventional fungicides. The heat treatments were studied with hot-water temperatures ranging between 48 and 56° C. Water at room temperature was used as a control treatment. After treatment, the fruits were kept under cold temperature at 10° C and RH 90% for about 45 days. For comparison, three other treatments were carried out simultaneously, one using imazalil, one with baking soda, and a third with sodium carbonate, these three products being applied by baths in cold water. Two groups of fruit were evaluated, one treated by immersion considering pathogens coming from the field and another by inoculation with spores of the previously isolated pathogens. For the evaluation of physical and chemical parameters of fruits, determinations were made of the skin color, texture, weight loss, size, juice yield, soluble solids, total acidity and vitamin C content. The determination of the sensitivity of the fruit to cold was made by their exposure at temperatures inducing cold damage. The design was a randomized block design with nine treatments, analyzed by the Statgraphics statistical package. Heat treatments, especially at 52° C, were shown to be more promising in the control of pathogenic fungi and cold damage, surpassing the conventional fungicides. No changes were found in the intrinsic and extrinsic parameters in relation to the application of the different treatments.

GOALS: This research evaluated the change in arterial pressure before and after two procedures of dental prophylaxis: Jet system baking soda and conventional prophylaxis and patient's opinion regarding the comfort of each one. MATERIAL AND METHOD: Were selected 32 patients with age between 18 to 30 years old, who need prophylaxis to remove biofilm and were subjected to three different types of treatment: sodium bicarbonate jet (G1), prophylaxis conventional (G2) and placebo (G3) at intervals of one month between them. Patients were divided randomly. Arterial pressure was measured by wrist digital Omron HEM – 6111. The measurements were realized in four times: before the prophylaxis, immediately the end of procedure, 15 and 30 minutes after finished of treatment. Patient comfort was measured by a Visual Analog Scale (VAS) after the end of the treatment. The data were analyzed using the variance test. The results showed that there was statistically significant difference to the comfort of the procedures. RESULTS: There was a statistically significant difference to the comfort of the procedures, and G2 and G3 better than G1. Regarding the variation of arterial pressure there was no statistically significant difference between groups. CONCLUSIONS: The methods of prophylaxis no effect on arterial pressure, but conventional prophylaxis is more comfortable than others treatments

O objetivo do presente estudo foi verificar o efeito da adição de um prebiótico nas características de crescimento, resistência às condições do trato gastrintestinal e remoção de colesterol in vitro, das cepas de Enterococcus faecium CRL183 e Lactobacillus helveticus 416. A fonte de prebiótico foi composta por Inulina GR – Orafti, sendo testadas as seguintes concentrações: 1,0%, 2,0%, 3,0%; 4,0%; 5,0% e 6,0% p/v). Para a avaliação da resistência às condições do trato gastrintestinal, os microrganismos foram colocados em contato com um fluido gástrico simulado por 2 horas (9g/L de NaCl, 3g/L de pepsina, pH 1,8) e com um fluido intestinal simulado por 3 horas (0,9g/L de pancreatina, 12,5g/L de bicarbonato de sódio e 6,0 g/L de Oxgall). Após o período de contato com os fluidos, foram realizadas diluições seriais e plaqueamento em meios específicos. No estudo de redução de colesterol, meios de cultura contendo inulina e colesterol (1%) foram inoculados com as cepas probióticas e incubados em anaerobiose a 37°C/24h. A capacidade de redução do colesterol foi determinada pela diferença entre a concentração de colesterol adicionada ao meio de cultura e a de colesterol residual. Os resultados foram submetidos à análise de variância e teste de médias de Tukey (p≤0,05). A adição de inulina não resultou em alteração no ciclo logarítmico de crescimento dos microrganismos. Porém, quando os dados foram submetidos à análise estatística, constatou-se que a adição de 1% a 4% de inulina inibiu o crescimento de Lactobacillus helveticus 416, sendo que para as concentrações de 5% a 6% estas alterações não foram perceptíveis. A cepa de Enterococcus faecium CRL 183 apresentou crescimento superior na presença de 2% e 4% de inulina. Risk of mechanical injuries contraindicate brushing and elect chemical agents as appropriate for daily cleaning of dentures relined with resilient materials. It was evaluated the effect of denture cleansers on the wettability of denture relining material (Dentusoft, Dental Medrano). We used 20 discs of acrylic resin thermoactivated VipiCril ® with 30mm diameter and 4mm thick, covered by 2mm Dentusoft ®. Divided into 4grupos were stored in artificial saliva at 37 +1 º C for 30 days, immersed daily for 15minutes in distilled water (GI), Corega ® Tabs (GII), a solution of sodium bicarbonate (GIII) or solution of sodium hypochlorite (GIV) after which, on the soft liner were poured 2 ml of type IV gypsum (Durone IV, Dentsply). Reached the final setting of the gypsum specimens were sectioned vertically and medially, settled water with sandpaper No. 400 and mounted on suitable device for reading (in the right and left) of the contact angle Carl Zeiss microscope (precision, 001). The results were submitted to analysis, showed non-normal distribution, opting for non-parametric test. Kruskal Wallis test performed at 5% significance, there was statistical difference between the groups with lower average contact angle for GII. It was concluded that the chemical cleaning Corega Tabs ® allowed a better adaptation of relining the gypsum studied.

Ceramic materials the alumina base are large industrial applications. They are required for these products, specific characteristics obtained by following strict criteria during the manufacturing process. However, after life, not always these products are reused by a suitable waste management process. In ceramist context, advance research aimed at the reuse of waste aimed at obtaining ceramics and composite materials, with marked reduction of conventional raw materials. Aiming to generate scientific, technological and environmental contribution, this work studied to obtain a composite of alumina ceramic (Al2O3) and sodium beta alumina (NaAl11O17 ), and as starting materials the residue of the ceramic insulator of spark plugs, as a source alumina (Al2O3) powder and unusable sodium bicarbonate (NaHCO3) of fire extinguishers, as a source of sodium oxide (Na2O). The final ceramic product was obtained from a conventional mixture of sodium aluminum oxide in appropriate molar proportions. Sample spark plugs were obtained, discarded by lifetime, specific to a manufacturer, which, after passing through mechanical stress (grinding, magnetic purification, washing, drying and grinding the high energy), which resulted in residue powder with ceramic content of 84.34 % alumina (Al2O3), found by FRX chemical analysis, the phases present and identified by DRX. The dry chemical fire extinguisher, baking soda-based (NaHCO3) with expired, was obtained through direct collection of the waste generated during maintenance. Subjected to heat treatment at 120 °C , the NaHCO3 powder was decomposed in sodium oxide ( Na2O), which, subjected to chemical analysis (FRX) and mineralogical (DRX) revealed a content of 86.62 % sodium oxide (Na2O) . In the following steps the experimental procedure, chemical formulations were made on a molar basis of the starting material (1:9, 1:10 and 1:11 de Na2O/ Al2O3) inclusion of additives, milling parameters, sieve analysis, dilatometry, conformation of specimens, sintering in firing steps at 800 °C , 1000 °C and 1.200 °C with varying stays 30 , 60 and 120 minutes in each of the levels. The characterization of the final product was made by the following physical tests: water absorption, porosity, linear shrinkage, mineralogical analysis by DRX and microstructural analysis by MEV. A higher formation of sodium beta alumina (NaAl11O17), in sintered specimens in levels of 1.200 °C and 120 minutes, despite the prevailing coexistence of alpha phase alumina (Al2O3). From the results obtained opens up prospects for the reuse of waste studied in this work, the potter context and in other technological areas.
