Rising sea surface temperatures in the North Sea have had consequential effects on not only indigenous plankton species, but also on the possibility of successful colonisation of the area by invasive plankton species. Previous studies have noted the introduction and integration into the plankton community of various phytoplankton species, but establishment of zooplankton organisms in the North Sea is less well-documented. Examining continuous plankton recorder (CPR) survey data and zooplankton results from the Helgoland Roads study, the autumn of 1999 witnessed the occurrence of the marine cladoceran Penilia avirostris in large numbers in the North Sea. The rapid appearance of the species corresponded with exceptionally warm sea surface temperatures (SSTs). Since 1999, the species has become a regular feature of the autumnal zooplankton community of the North Sea. In 2002 and 2003, the species occurred in greater abundance than recorded before. It is suggested that increased autumn SSTs have proved favourable to P. avirostris, with warmer conditions contributing to the success of the species’ resting eggs and aiding colonisation.

In this work we describe the effect of classical and quantum noise on the Berry phase. It is not a topical review article but rather an overview of our work in this field aiming at giving a simple pictorial intuition of our results.

The evolution of a two level system with a slowly varying Hamiltonian, modeled as a spin 1/2 in a slowly varying magnetic field, and interacting with a quantum environment, modeled as a bath of harmonic oscillators is analyzed using a quantum Langevin approach. This allows to easily obtain the dissipation time and the correction to the Berry phase in the case of an adiabatic cyclic evolution.

The effect of fluctuations in the classical control parameters on the Berry phase of a spin 1/2 interacting with an adiabatically cyclically varying magnetic field is analyzed. It is explicitly shown that in the adiabatic limit dephasing is due to fluctuations of the dynamical phase.

We present an ab initio real-time-based computational approach to study nonlinear optical properties in condensed matter systems that is especially suitable for crystalline solids and periodic nanostructures. The equations of motion and the coupling of the electrons with the external electric field are derived from the Berry-phase formulation of the dynamical polarization [Souza et al., Phys. Rev. B 69, 085106 (2004)]. Many-body effects are introduced by adding single-particle operators to the independent-particle Hamiltonian. We add a Hartree operator to account for crystal local effects and a scissor operator to correct the independent particle band structure for quasiparticle effects. We also discuss the possibility of accurately treating excitonic effects by adding a screened Hartree-Fock self-energy operator. The approach is validated by calculating the second-harmonic generation of SiC and AlAs bulk semiconductors: an excellent agreement is obtained with existing ab initio calculations from response theory in frequency domain [Luppi et al., Phys. Rev. B 82, 235201 (2010)]. We finally show applications to the second-harmonic generation of CdTe and the third-harmonic generation of Si.

The free metal ion concentrations obtained by SSCP (stripping chronopotentiometry at scanned deposition potential) and by AGNES (absence of gradients and Nernstian equilibrium stripping) techniques have been compared and the usefulness of the combination of both techniques in the same electrochemical cell for trace metal speciation analysis is assessed. The free metal ion concentrations and the stability constants obtained for lead(II) and cadmium(II) complexation by pyridinedicarboxylic acid, by 40 nm radius carboxylated latex nanospheres and by a humic acid extracted from an ombrotrophic peat bog were determined. Whenever possible, the free metal ion concentrations were compared with the theoretical predictions of the code MEDUSA and with the free metal ion concentrations estimated from ion selective electrodes (ISE). SSCP values were in agreement with the ones obtained by AGNES, and both of them agreed reasonably with the ISE values and the theoretical predictions. For the lead(II)-humic acid, it was not possible to obtain the stability constants by SSCP due to the heterogeneity effect. However, using AGNES it is possible to obtain, for these heterogeneous systems, the free bulk metal concentration, which allows us to retrieve the stability constant at bulk conditions.
