Knowledge about the glacial refugia of the thermophilous European Castanea sativa Mill. (sweet chestnut) is still inadequate. Its original range of distribution has been masked by strong human impact. Moreover, under natural conditions the species was probably admixed with other taxa (such as Quercus, Fraxinus, Fagus, Tilia) and thus possibly represented by low percentages in pollen records. In this paper we try to overcome the difficulties related to the scarcity and irregularity of chestnut pollen records by considering 1471 sites and extending the palynological approach to develop a Castanea refugium probability index (IRP), aimed at detecting possible chestnut refugia where chestnuts survived during the last glaciation. The results are in close agreement with the current literature on the refugia of other thermophilous European trees. The few divergences are most probably due to the large amount of new data integrated in this study, rather than to fundamental disagreements about data and data interpretation. The main chestnut refugia are located in the Transcaucasian region, north-western Anatolia, the hinterland of the Tyrrhenian coast from Liguria to Lazio along the Apennine range, the region around Lago di Monticchio (Monte Vulture) in southern Italy, and the Cantabrian coast on the Iberian peninsula. Despite the high likelihood of Castanea refugia in the Balkan Peninsula and north-eastern Italy (Colli Euganei, Monti Berici, Emilia-Romagna) as suggested by the IRP, additional palaeobotanical investigations are needed to assess whether these regions effectively sheltered chestnut during the last glaciation. Other regions, such as the Isère Département in France, the region across north-west Portugal and Galicia, and the hilly region along the Mediterranean coast of Syria and Lebanon were classified as areas of medium refugium probability. Our results reveal an unexpected spatial richness of potential Castanea refugia. It is likely that other European trees had similar distribution ranges during the last glaciation. It is thus conceivable that shelter zones with favourable microclimates were probably more numerous and more widely dispersed across Europe than so far assumed. In the future, more attention should be paid to pollen traces of sporadic taxa thought to have disappeared from a given area during the last glacial and post-glacial period.

Our study intended to explore the potential distributionshif of Phlebotomusariasi, P. neglectus, P. perfiliewi, P. perniciosus, and P. tobbi, and some other sandfly species: P. papatasi, P. sergenti, and P. similis. We used climate envelope modeling (CEM) method to determine the ecological requirements of the species and to model the potential distribution for three periods (1961-1990, 2011-2040, and 2041- 2070). We found that by the end of the 2060’s the Southern UK, Germany, entire France and also the western part of Poland can be colonized by sandfly species, mostly by P. ariasi and P. pernicosus. P. ariasishowe the greatest potential northward expansion, from 49°N to 59°N. For all of the studied sand fly species the entire Mediterranean Basin, the Balkan Peninsula, the Carpathian Basin, and northern coastline of the Black Sea are potentially suitable. The length of the predicted active period of the vectors will increase with one or two months.

Ancient Lake Ohrid, located in the southern Balkan Peninsula in Macedonia and Albania is characterized by a high degree of endemism and it is considered to be the oldest lake in Europe. But its exact age (between one and ten million years) and also its origin are so far not known. To unravel these uncertainties an ICDP (International Continental Scientific Drilling Program) drilling project (Scientific Collaboration On Past Speciation Conditions in Ohrid (SCOPSCO)), started in April 2013. In addition to the investigations about the age and origin, other paleolimnological studies, e.g., the reconstruction of past climate and of past lake level changes, should be performed with the drilled cores. Used proxies in such paleolimnological studies are, e.g., ostracodes because they respond sensitively to environmental changes but an accurate knowledge of their preferences and tolerances to specific environmental conditions is necessary for this purpose. So far, this knowledge about the, mostly endemic, Ohrid ostracodes was limited. Thus, within the framework of this thesis, ostracodes and a multiplicity of environmental data were collected in Lake Ohrid and its adjacent waters during four field campaigns. In a total of 47 ostracode species could be detected in the entire study area and 32 of them were found alive in Lake Ohrid. Multivariate statistic identified that water depth, salinity, conductivity, pH, and dissolved oxygen were the main determining factors for ostracode distribution in the entire study area. In Lake Ohrid, the distribution was mainly controlled by water depth, water temperature, and pH. Some ostracodes were identified as strong indicator species for important environmental variables, e.g., water temperature and water depth. A distinctive feature of Lake Ohrid was the finding of the ostracode genus Amnicythere whose species normally inhabit oligo-(meso-)haline waters and this could point to a marine origin of the lake. So far, the specialized endemic ostracodes show the highest abundances and the greatest spatial distribution in Lake Ohrid but during the sampling eight widespread species were found for the first time in the lake. They inhabited mainly the northern part of the lake, where two cities are located and industry and agriculture play a major role, and they were limited to water depths above 50 m and this could be an evidence for an increasing anthropogenic pressure because widespread ostracode species often replace endemic species. To unravel the human impact on Lake Ohrid during the last decades short sediment cores were taken and the multi-proxy study indicated that the lake productivity between the early 1920s and the late 1980s was relatively low. Diatom assemblages indicate a rising productivity in the southern part of Lake Ohrid since the mid 1970s and geochemical proxies and ostracodes point to an increasing productivity since the late 1980s in the southern and in the northern part. A slight increase in the productivity continued until 2009. Noticeable is the fact that since the early 1990s, the increasing productivity and the increasing concentrations of heavy metals correspond to a decreasing number of ostracodes in the northern part of Lake Ohrid. Perhaps, this indicates that living conditions in this lake part became less favorable for the mostly endemic ostracode species. Furthermore, the sediment samples from the cores show relatively high concentrations of arsenic, iron, and nickel. Fluctuations in ostracode assemblages from three longer sediment cores, the longest spans approximately 136 ka, taken in Lake Ohrid, correspond to fluctuations in the productivity, in the carbonate content, of the lake level, and of climate changes. Between the marine isotope stage (MIS) 6 and MIS 2 the number of ostracode valves is very low or the valves were completely absent. This corresponds to a low lake productivity, a low carbonate content, and a low lake level. At the onset of the Holocene, the number of valves increased markedly and this correlates with an increased productivity and carbonate content and a warmer climate. But during the Little Ice Age (LIA), the number of valves dropped again and species which prefer warmer waters disappeared completely. This drop corresponds also to a low productivity. After the LIA, the number of species increased again but since 1895 AD a strong and abrupt decrease is visible. A reason for this could be an increase in the heavy metal concentrations.

In this study, we investigated the relationship between vegetation and modern-pollen rain along the elevational gradient of Mount Paggeo. We apply multivariate data analysis to assess the relationship between vegetation and modern-pollen rain and quantify the representativeness of forest zones. This study represents the first statistical analysis of pollen-vegetation relationship along an elevational gradient in Greece. Hence, this paper improves confidence in interpretation of palynological records from north-eastern Greece and may refine past climate reconstructions for a more accurate comparison of data and modelling. Numerical classification and ordination were performed on pollen data to assess differences among plant communities that beech (Fagus sylvatica) dominates or co-dominates. The results show a strong relationship between altitude, arboreal cover, human impact and variations in pollen and nonpollen palynomorph taxa percentages.

Integrative taxonomy tests the validity of taxa using methods additional to traditional morphology. The existence of two different morphotypes in specimens identified as Chrysotoxum vernale Loew (Diptera: Syrphidae) prompted their taxonomic study using an integrative approach that included morphology, wing and male-surstylus geometric morphometrics, genetic and ecological analyses. As a result, a new species is recognised, Chrysotoxum montanum Nedeljković & Vujić sp. nov., and C. vernale is re-defined. A lectotype and paralectotypes are designated for C. vernale to stabilize this concept. An additional species, Chrysotoxum orthostylum Vujić sp. nov., with distinctive male genitalia is also described. The three species share an antenna with the basoflagellomere shorter than the scape plus pedicel and terga with yellow fasciae not reaching the lateral margins. This study confirms the value of integrative approach for resolving species boundaries.
