Beyond Wearables : Experiences and Trends in Design of Portable Medical Devices

The use of Portable Medical Devices (PMDs) has become increasingly widespread over the last few years. A combination of factors; including advances in technology, the pressure to reduce public health costs and the desire to make health solutions accessible to a wider patient base are contributing to the growth in the PMD market. Design has a clear role to play in the current and future context of the PMD landscape. In this paper, we identify emerging trends in the design of PMDs; including changes in the form, purpose and mode of use, and explore how these trends are likely to fundamentally impact the nature of healthcare and the patient experience from an experience design perspective. We conclude by identifying a research opportunity for design within the healthcare and PMD context.

Growing food in the city: A study across interaction design and urban agriculture

The thesis offers the foundation of a design pattern language for urban gardening, as well as a prototype mobile storytelling platform through which urban gardeners can share gardening experiences. This study examined three urban agriculture communities – a city farm, a permaculture movement, and residential gardeners – in order to better understand some of the challenges in their food growing practices. The city is increasingly being rediscovered by gardeners, food activists, and local governments as an under-utilised opportunity space for land cultivation and local food production, and the findings of this research were analysed with a view to consider interactive technology and design interventions in response.

Interaction design for tablet based edutainment systems for mathematical education of primary student

Mathematics has been perceived as the core area of learning in most educational systems around the world including Sri Lanka. Unfortunately, it is clearly visible that a majority of Sri Lankan students are failing in their basic mathematics when the recent grade five scholarship examination and ordinary level exam marks are analysed. According to Department of Examinations Sri Lanka , on average, over 88 percent of the students are failing in the grade 5 scholarship examinations where mathematics plays a huge role while about 50 percent of the students fail in there ordinary level mathematics examination. Poor or lack of basic mathematics skills has been identified as the root cause.

Data definition and manipulation languages for a CAD database

In this paper the main features of ARDBID (A Relational Database for Interactive Design) have been described. An overview of the organization of the database has been presented and a detailed description of the data definition and manipulation languages has been given. These have been implemented on a DEC 1090 system.

m-SportGIS

Information technologies (ITs), and sports resources and services aid the potential to transform governmental organizations, and play an important role in contributing to sustainable communities development, respectively. Spatial data is a crucial source to support sports planning and management. Low-cost mobile geospatial tools bring productive and accurate data collection, and their use combining a handy and customized graphical user interface (GUI) (forms, mapping, media support) is still in an early stage. Recognizing the benefits — efficiency, effectiveness, proximity to citizens — that Mozambican Minister of Youth and Sports (MJD) can achieve with information resulted from the employment of a low-cost data collection platform, this project presents the development of a mobile mapping application (app) — m-SportGIS — under Open Source (OS) technologies and a customized evolutionary software methodology. The app development embraced the combination of mobile web technologies and Application Programming Interfaces (APIs) (e.g. Sencha Touch (ST), Apache Cordova, OpenLayers) to deploy a native-to-the-device (Android operating system) product, taking advantage of device’s capabilities (e.g. File system, Geolocation, Camera). In addition to an integrated Web Map Service (WMS), was created a local and customized Tile Map Service (TMS) to serve up cached data, regarding the IT infrastructures limitations in several Mozambican regions. m-SportGIS is currently being exploited by Mozambican Government staff to inventory all kind of sports facilities, which resulted and stored data feeds a WebGIS platform to manage Mozambican sports resources.

Systemintegration mellan Java och VB.NET med webservices

I dagens näringsliv är effektiv kommunikation och informationsutbyte mellan företag en förutsättning för verksamheten. Näringslivet utmärks av förändring; företag köps upp, företag slås samman, företag samarbetar i projektform. Behovet av att integrera varandras informationssystem står i paritet med ovanstående förändringar. Ett stort problem med systemintegration är variationsrikedomen mellan informationssystemen, beträffande teknisk plattform och programspråk. Webservices erbjuder metoder att enkelt integrera olika informationssystem med varandra.I rapporten beskrivs hur webservices implementeras och vilka tekniska komponenter som ingår, samt de fördelar som webservicetekniken ger. Uppdraget från Sogeti, Borlänge var att designa och implementera en prototyp, i vilken klientapplikationer i Java och VB.NET integreras med varandra genom webservices i respektive programspråk. För analys och design har metoden UML använts. Slutsatsen av rapporten är att Java och VB.NET kan kommunicera med varandra genom webserviceteknik. Dock är integrationen mellan de två programspråken inte okomplicerad. Detta leder till slutsatsen att webservicetekniken måste standardiseras för att få ordentligt genomslag som teknik för systemintegration mellan olika programspråk.

Java applets for a WWW-HTML-based course in power electronics

This paper introduces Java applet programs for a WWW (world wide web)-HTML (hypertext markup language)-based multimedia course in Power Electronics. The applet programs were developed with the purpose of providing an interactive visual simulation and analysis of idealized uncontrolled single-phase, and three-phase rectifiers. In addition, this paper discusses the development and utilization of JAVA applet programs to solve some design-oriented equations for rectifier applications. The major goal of these proposed JAVA applets was to provide more facilities for the students increase their pace in Power Electronics course, emphasizing waveforms analysis, and providing conditions for an on-line comparative analysis among different hands-on laboratory experiences, via a normal Internet TCP/IP connection. Therefore, using the proposed JAVA applets, which were embedded in a WWW-HTML-based course in Power Electronics, was observed an important improvement of the apprenticeship for the content of this course. Therefore, the course structure becomes fluid, allowing a true on-line course over the WWW, motivating students to learn its content, and apply it in some applications-oriented projects, and their home-works.

Sviluppo di un'applicazione Android per l'accessibilità urbana degli edifici e della città

Il documento di tesi è composto da tre capitoli, che in successione analizzano gli aspetti teorici del progetto fino ad arrivare all’implementazione vera e propria dell’applicazione. Nel primo capitolo vediamo definito il tema dell’accessibilità accennando alle normative presenti in Italia e all’estero sull’argomento. Successivamente viene spiegato il concetto di Smart City e le tecniche che vengono utilizzate allo scopo di migliorare la qualità di vita nelle città. Vengono introdotti i concetti di crowdsourcing e participatory sensing, ideologie alla base delle Smart City. Al termine del capitolo viene introdotto uno studio sul grado di accessibilità degli smartphone presenti oggi sul mercato, analizzando anche le tecnologie assistive disponibili per questi dispositivi. Nel secondo capitolo si descrivono le tecnologie e i servizi utilizzati durante la creazione del progetto. In particolare viene presentato Android ed il suo funzionamento, essendo quest’ultimo il sistema operativo per cui è stata sviluppata l’applicazione. In seguito troviamo una breve analisi di tutti i servizi impiegati nel progetto: Foursquare, Fusion Table e Google Maps. Infine vengono descritte le tecnologie intermedie utilizzate per far comunicare fra loro gli strumenti spiegati in precedenza. Nel terzo capitolo viene presentata in modo dettagliato l’implementazione del progetto. Inizialmente vengono definite le classi principali create per progettare le funzionalità di base del software e per interagire con i servizi scelti. Successivamente viene descritto il funzionamento e l’aspetto dell’applicazione sviluppata insieme a degli screenshot, che permetteranno al lettore di avere un riferimento visivo di ciò che è stato esposto nel corso della tesi.

Ricostruzione 3d da immagini rgb-d su piattaforma mobile

Viene proposto un porting su piattaforma mobile Android di un sistema SLAM (Simultaneous Localization And Mapping) chiamato SlamDunk. Il porting affronta problematiche di prestazioni e qualità delle ricostruzioni 3D ottenute, proponendo poi la soluzione ritenuta ottimale.
