Assisted by a mechanical alloying and high-pressure technique, a new W4Mg intermetallic was formed. W4Mg amorphous mixture was obtained by mechanically alloying the pure metal powder mixtures at designated composition for 20 h. A new compound was found after the subsequent high-pressure and high-temperature treatment. W4Mg intermetallic was identified as a cubic structure and the lattice parameter was a=0.4150 nm. The synthesis mechanism is also discussed in this paper.

Dissolved organic carbon (DOC), stable carbon isotopic (delta(13)C) compositions of DOC and particulate organic carbon (POC), and elemental C/N ratios of POC were measured for samples collected from the lower Mississippi and Atchafalaya rivers and adjacent coastal waters in the northern Gulf of Mexico during the low flow season in June 2000 and high flow season in April 2001. These isotopic and C/N results combined with DOC measurements were used to assess the sources and transport of terrestrial organic matter from the Mississippi and Atchafalaya rivers to the coastal region in the northern Gulf of Mexico. delta(13)C values of both POC (-23.8parts per thousand to -26.8parts per thousand) and DOC (-25.0parts per thousand to -29.0parts per thousand) carried by the two rivers were more depleted than the values measured for the samples collected in the offshore waters. Strong seasonal variations in delta(13)C distributions were observed for both POC and DOC in the surface waters of the region. Fresh water discharge and horizontal mixing played important roles in the distribution and transport of terrestrial POC and DOC offshore. Our results indicate that both POC and DOC exhibited non-conservative behavior during the mixing especially in the mid-salinity range. Based on a simple two end-member mixing model, the comparison of the measured DOC-delta(13)C with the calculated conservative isotopic mixing curve indicated that there was a significant in situ production of marine-derived DOC in the mid- to high-salinity waters consistent with our in situ chlorophyll-a measurements. Our DOC-delta(13)C data suggest that a removal of terrestrial DOC mainly occurred in the high-salinity (>25) waters during the mixing. Our study indicates that the mid- to high- (10-30) salinity range was the most dynamic zone for organic carbon transport and cycling in the Mississippi River estuary. Variability in isotopic and elemental compositions along with variability in DOC and POC concentrations suggest that autochthonous production, bacterial utilization, and photo-oxidation could all play important roles in regulating and removing terrestrial DOC in the northern Gulf of Mexico and further study of these individual processes is warranted. Poly(ethylene glycol)-based aqueous biphasic systems (PEG-ABSs) have been investigated as tunable reaction media, in the example presented here, to control the oxidation of cyclohexene to adipic acid with hydrogen peroxide. The production of adipic acid was found to increase from the monophasic to the biphasic regimes, was greatest at short tie-line lengths (close to the system's critical point), and demonstrates how control of the ABS media, through changes in system composition, PEG, salt, and tie-line length, can be used to readily tune and control reactivity and product isolation in these aqueous biphasic reactive extraction systems. Challenges in using this system, including possible oxidation reactions of the PEG-OH end groups, are also discussed.

Low-energy electron diffraction, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, high-resolution electron energy-loss spectroscopy, scanning tunneling microscopy, and temperature-programmed reaction spectrometry results are reported for the structural and reactive behavior of alumina films grown on Pt(111) as a function of thickness and oxidation temperature. Submonolayer Al films undergo compete oxidation at 300 K, annealing at 1100 K resulting in formation of somewhat distorted crystalline gamma-alumina, Thicker deposits require 800 K oxidation to produce Al2O3, and these too undergo crystallization at 800 K, yielding islands of apparently undistorted gamma-alumina on the Pt(111) surface. Oxidation of a p(2 x 2) Pt3Al surface alloy occurs only at>800 K, resulting in Al extraction, These alumina films on Pt(lll) markedly increase the coverage of adsorbed SO4 resulting from SO2 chemisorption onto oxygen-precovered surfaces. This results in enhanced propane uptake and subsequent reactivity relative to SO4/Pt(111). A bifunctional mechanism is proposed to account for our observations, and the relevance of these to an understanding of the corresponding dispersed systems is discussed.

In most applications helium-based plasma jets operate in an open-air environment. The presence of humid air in the plasma jet will influence the plasma chemistry and can lead to the production of a broader range of reactive species. We explore the influence of humid air on the reactive species in radio frequency (rf)-driven atmospheric-pressure helium-oxygen mixture plasmas (He-O, helium with 5000 ppm admixture of oxygen) for wide air impurity levels of 0-500 ppm with relative humidities of from 0% to 100% using a zero-dimensional, time-dependent global model. Comparisons are made with experimental measurements in an rf-driven micro-scale atmospheric pressure plasma jet and with one-dimensional semi-kinetic simulations of the same plasma jet. These suggest that the plausible air impurity level is not more than hundreds of ppm in such systems. The evolution of species concentration is described for reactive oxygen species, metastable species, radical species and positively and negatively charged ions (and their clusters). Effects of the air impurity containing water humidity on electronegativity and overall plasma reactivity are clarified with particular emphasis on reactive oxygen species. © 2013 IOP Publishing Ltd.

This Ph.D. research focuses on asymmetric rolling (ASR), as an alternative method for improving mechanical responses of aluminium-magnesium alloy and interstitial free (IF) steel regarding industrial requirements. Aluminium alloys are attractive materials in various industries due to their appropriate properties such as low density and corrosion resistance; however, their low formability has limited their applications. As formability of aluminium alloys can be improved through texture development, part of this dissertation is dedicated to producing the desired crystallographic texture with the ASR process. Two types of ASR (i.e. reverse and continuous asymmetric rolling) were investigated. The impact of shear deformation imposed by ASR processes on developing the desirable texture and consequently on mechanical behaviours was observed. The developed shear texture increased the normal and also planar anisotropy. Texture evolution during plastic deformation as well as induced mechanical behaviour were simulated using the “self-consistent” and Taylor models. Interstitial free (IF) steel was the second material selected in this dissertation. Since IF steel is one of the most often used materials in automotive industries it was chosen to investigate the effect of shear deformation through ASR on its properties. Two types of reverse and continuous asymmetric rolling were carried out to deform IF steel sheets. The results of optical microscopy and atomic force microscopy observations showed no significant difference between the grains’ morphology of asymmetric and conventionally rolled samples, whereas the obtained results of transmission electron microscopy indicated that fine and equiaxed dislocation cells were formed through the asymmetric rolling process. This structure is due to imposed shear deformation during the ASR process. Furthermore, the mechanical behaviour of deformed and annealed sheets was evaluated through uniaxial tensile tests. Results showed that at low thickness reductions (18%) the asymmetric rolled sample presented higher stress than that of the conventionally rolled sheet; while for higher thickness reductions (60%) the trend was reversed. The texture analyses indicated that intense rolling texture components which developed through 60% thickness reduction of conventional rolling cause a relatively higher stress; on the contrary the fine structure resulting from ASR appears to be the source of higher stress observed after pre-deformation of 18%.
