ABSTRACT: Nowadays programs defend teaching model that follows a perspective based in Science, Technology, Society and Environment, with special focus in the diversification of strategies. Outside of classroom teaching, in non-formal spaces, as in field trips, is considered one of the strategies with the highest pedagogic potential. ln this study, two field trips were made based on the Physics and Chemistry program for the 1Oth grade, with the first one as the pilot visit to Centro de Ciência Viva de Constância, and the second one as the main study, ln the Path of Renewable Energies, to Alqueva’s dam, Amareleja's Solar Photovoltaic Center, Noudar's Nature Park and Herdade do Esporão. A pre-visit was made for each one of the places to visit, contacts were made, materials were created, an itinerary and a Field Guide for both field trips, satisfaction questionaries were made to the students and the teacher also interviewed some students for appreciations about the visit. The students created posters about the field trip, and information was also showed in the school website. With this study, the benefits of a contextualized learning in a non-formal space were demonstrated. These acquisitions of knowledge were in various domains, such as cognition, social behavior and the didactic materials had a relevant role in these acquirements. Moreover, the students' motivation for the subject in question improved significantly during and after the field trip. The cooperation with the visited institutions revealed to be important in the establishment of an interface between the formal and the non-formal spaces. Making field trips is an important component in the curricula and should be encouraged and seen as a natural part of a strategy of motivation of the students for a certain subject, increasing its ability to learn matters.

The construction of the Alqueva dam has caused several landscape transformations, in the socioeconomical, ecological matter. The submersion of the old Luz village was a direct result of this construction, with the consequent construction of a new Luz village. An event, which is remarkable in the Alqueva history. The project work objective is to value the public open spaces of the new village and its surrounding space. This strategy settled on the recognition and appreciation of the existing ecological and cultural systems, and in the touristic potential that is associated with it. The work methodology includes analysis of the villages and a survey fulfilment targeting the population (habitants, occasional residents and visitors) with the intent of better answering their current desires. The work culminates with the Public Open Space Appreciation Proposal for the Luz village and nearby surrounding space, and with the Ecological and Cultural Structures Plan (urban and rural).

In order to access the effect of the lakes in the atmospheric electrical field, measurements have been carried out near a large man-made lake in southern Portugal, the Alqueva reservoir, during the ALqueva hydro-meteorological EXperiment 2014. The purpose of these conjoint experiments was to study the impact of the Alqueva reservoir on the atmosphere, in particular on the local atmospheric electric environment by comparing measurements taken in the proximity of the lake. Two stations 10 km apart were used, as they were located up- and down-wind of the lake (Amieira and Parque Solar, respectively), in reference to the dominant northwestern wind direction. The up-wind station shows lower atmospheric electric potential gradient (PG) values than the ones observed in the down-wind station between 12 and 20 UTC. The difference in the atmospheric electric PG between the up-wind and the down-wind station is ~30 V/m during the day. This differential occurs mainly during the development of a lake breeze, between 10 and 18 UTC, as a consequence of the surface temperature gradient between the surrounding land and the lake water. In the analysis presented, a correlation is found between the atmospheric electric PG differences and both wind speed and temperature gradients over the lake, thus supporting the influence of the lake breeze over the observed PG variation in the two stations. Two hypotheses are provided to explain this observation: (1) The air that flows from the lake into the land station is likely to increase the local electric conductivity through the removal of ground dust and the transport of cleaner air from higher altitudes with significant light ion concentrations. With such an increase in conductivity, it is expected to see a reduction of the atmospheric electric PG; (2) the resulting air flow over the land station carries negative ions formed by wave splashing in the lake's water surface, as a result of the so-called balloelectric effect. These negative ions will form a space-charge density (SCD) that can reduce the atmospheric electric PG. A formulation is derived here in order to estimate the local SCD.

This work aims at improving the knowledge on fog formation and its evolution in the Alentejo region (Portugal). For this purpose, brief regional fog climatology, essentially based on information from the Beja Air Base meteorological station, was produced and several numerical high resolution simulations were performed using the Meso-NH. The ECOCLIMAP database used to generate the model physiography was improved to include the Alqueva reservoir (~250 km2), filled in 2003. The model results were compared with surface and satellite observations, showing good agreement in terms of fog occurrence and persistence. Various forcing mechanisms for formation, development, and dissipation of fog were identified, confirming the influence of two small mountains that block the moist air from the Atlantic Ocean, preventing the fog from reaching innermost regions. The introduction of the Alqueva large reservoir induces changes in the landscape and environment. The effects of the water vapour addition and of the changes in mass and energy surface fluxes on fog formation and evolution were studied. It was found that the reservoir may have a direct impact on fog formation over the lake and its vicinity. Depending on the large scale meteorological conditions, their influence can be both positive and negative, in terms of spatial coverage and temporal persistence.
