In steel refining process, an increase of interfacial area between the metal and slag through the metal droplets emulsified into the slag, so-called ``metal emulsion'', is one prevailing view for improving the reaction rate. The formation of metal emulsion was experimentally evaluated using Al-Cu alloy as metal phase and chloride salt as slag phase under the bottom bubbling condition. Samples were collected from the center of the salt phase in the container. Large number of metal droplets were separated from the salt by dissolving it into water. The number, surface area, and weight of the droplets increased with the gas flow rate and have local maximum values. The formation and sedimentation rates of metal droplets were estimated using a mathematical model. The formation rate increased with the gas flow rate and has a local maximum value as a function of gas flow rate, while the sedimentation rate is independent of the gas flow rate under the bottom bubbling condition. Three types of formation mode of metal emulsion, which occurred by the rupture of metal film around the bubble, were observed using high speed camera. During the process, an elongated column covered with metal film was observed with the increasing gas flow rate. This elongated column sometimes reached to the top surface of the salt phase. In this case, it is considered that fine droplets were not formed and in consequence, the weight of metal emulsion decreased at higher gas flow rate.

The Southern Marginal Zone of the Limpopo Complex is composed of granite-greenstone cratonic rocks reworked by a Neoarchean high-grade tectono-metamorphic event. Petrographic and mineral chemical characterization of an Al-Mg granulite from this zone is presented here. The granulite has a gneissic fabric with distinct Al-rich and Si-rich layers, with the former preserving the unusual lamellar (random and regular subparallel) intergrowths of corundum and symplectic intergrowth of spinel with orthopyroxene. The Al-rich layer preserves mineral assemblages such as rutile with orthopyroxene + sillimanite +/- A quartz, Al-rich orthopyroxene (similar to 11 wt%), spinel + quartz, and corundum in possible equilibrium with quartz, while the Si-rich layer preserves antiperthites and orthopyroxene + sillimanite +/- A quartz, all considered diagnostic of ultrahigh-temperature metamorphism. Application of Al-in-opx thermometry, ternary feldspar thermometry and construction of suitable pressure-temperature phase diagrams, compositional and model proportion isopleth results indicate P-T conditions as high as similar to 1,050-1,100 A degrees C, and similar to 10-12 kbars for the Al-Mg granulite. Our report of ultrahigh-temperature conditions is significant considering that the very high temperature was reached during decompression of an otherwise high-pressure granulite complex (clockwise P-T path), whereas most other ultrahigh-temperature granulites are linked to magma underplating at the base of the crust (counterclockwise P-T path).

This paper deals with a combined forming and fracture limit diagram and void coalescence analysis for the aluminum alloy Al 1145 alloy sheets of 1.8 mm thickness, annealed at four different temperatures, namely 200, 250, 300, and 350 A degrees C. At different annealing temperatures these sheets were examined for their effects on microstructure, tensile properties, formability, void coalescence, and texture. Scanning electron microscope (SEM) images taken from the fractured surfaces were examined. The tensile properties and formability of sheet metals were correlated with fractography features and void analysis. The variation of formability parameters, normal anisotropy of sheet metals, and void coalescence parameters were compared with texture analysis.

The effect of strain rate, (epsilon) over dot, and temperature, T, on the tension-compression asymmetry (TCA) in a dilute and wrought Mg alloy, AM30, over a temperature range that covers both twin accommodated deformation (below 250 degrees C in compression) as well as dislocation-mediated plasticity (above 250 degrees C) has been investigated. For this purpose, uniaxial tension and compression tests were conducted at T ranging from 25 to 400 degrees C with (epsilon) over dot varying between 10(-2) and 10 s(-1). In most of the cases, the stress-strain responses in tension and compression are distinctly different; with compression responses `concaving upward,' due to {10 (1) over bar2} tensile twinning at lower plastic strains followed by slip and strain hardening at higher levels of deformation, for T below 250 degrees C. This results in significant levels of TCA at T < 250 degrees C, reducing substantially at high temperatures. At T=150 and 250 degrees C, high (epsilon) over dot leads to high TCA, in particular at T=250 degrees C and (epsilon) over dot=10 s(-1), suggesting that twin-mediated plastic deformation takes precedence at high rates of loading even at sufficiently high T. TCA becomes negligible at T=350 degrees C; however at T=400 degrees C, as (epsilon) over dot increases TCA gets higher. Microscopy of the deformed samples, carried out by using electron back-scattered diffraction (EBSD), suggests that at T > 250 degrees C dynamic recrystallization begins between accompanied by reduction in the twinned fraction that contributes to the decrease of the TCA.

A 2D multi-particle model is carried out to understand the effect of microstructural variations and loading conditions on the stress evolution in Al-Si alloy under compression. A total of six parameters are varied to create 26 idealized microstructures: particle size, shape, orientation, matrix temper, strain rate, and temperature. The effect of these parameters is investigated to understand the fracture of Si particles and the yielding of Al matrix. The Si particles are modeled as a linear elastic solid and the Al matrix is modeled as an elasto-plastic solid. The results of the study demonstrate that the increase in particle size decreases the yield strength of the alloy. The particles with high aspect ratio and oriented at 0A degrees and 90A degrees to the loading axis show higher stress values. This implies that the particle shape and orientation are dominant factors in controlling particle fracture. The heat treatment of the alloy is found to increase the stress levels of both particles and matrix. Stress calculations also show that higher particle fracture and matrix yielding is expected at higher strain rate deformation. Particle fracture decreases with increase in temperature and the Al matrix plays an important role in controlling the properties of the alloy at higher temperatures. Further, this strain rate and temperature dependence is more pronounced in the heat-treated microstructure. These predictions are consistent with the experimentally observed Si particle fracture in real microstructure.

The stress states in Si particles of cast Al-Si based alloys depend on its morphology and the heat treatment given to the alloy. The Si particles fracture less on modification and fracture more in the heat treated condition. An attempt has been made in this work to study the effect of heat treatment and Si modification on the stress states of the particles. Such understanding will be valuable for predicting the ductility of the alloy. The stress states of Si particles are estimated by Raman technique and compared with the microstructure-based FEM simulations. Combination of Electron Back-Scattered Diffraction (EBSD) and frequency shift, polarized micro-Raman technique is applied to determine the stress states in Si particles with (111) orientations. Stress states are measured in the as-received state and under uniaxial compression. The residual stress, the stress in the elastic-plastic regime and the stress which causes fracture of the particles is estimated by Raman technique. FEM study demonstrates that the stress distribution is uniform in modified Si, whereas the unmodified Si shows higher and more complex stress states. The onset of plastic flow is observed at sharp corners of the particles and is followed by localization of strain between particles. Clustering of particles generates more inhomogeneous plastic strain in the matrix. Particle stress estimated by Raman technique is in agreement with FEM calculations. (C) 2014 Elsevier B.V. This is the first successful attempt to produce Mg-Ce alloys of different texture through different processing routes while keeping the grain size and grain size distribution same. Tensile data shows that contribution of texture to ductility enhancement is primary and that of grain refinement is secondary. The texture resulting from multi-axial forging of extruded billets followed by annealing exhibits the highest ductility (similar to 40%) at room temperature. (C) 2015 Elsevier B.V. Plasma electrolytic oxidation coatings were produced on AM50 Mg alloy in alkaline phosphate based electrolyte with montmorillonite clay additives employing current densities of 30, 60, and 120 mA/cm(2). The effect of current density on the microstructure and corrosion properties of the coating was investigated. The clay additives got melted and reactively incorporated into the coating forming an amorphous phase, at all the current densities. However, the coating was predominantly amorphous only at 30 mA/cm(2) and with increasing current density, increasing fractions of crystalline phases were formed. Higher current densities resulted in increased thickness of the coating, but reduced the compactness of the coatings. Electrochemical impedance spectroscopy tests in 0.5 wt.% (0.08 M) and 3.5 wt.% (0.6 M) NaCl solution revealed that the coatings processed at 30 mA/cm(2) exhibited a relatively better initial corrosion resistance owing to its relatively defect-free barrier layer and compactness of the coating. However, the presence of amorphous phases in significant amounts and lack of MgO in the coating resulted in increased rate of dissolution of the coatings and degradation of corrosion resistance. Coatings produced at higher current densities exhibited initial inferior corrosion resistance due to a more defective barrier layer and increased porosity in pore band and outer porous layer. However, the increased amount of crystalline phases and an increased amount of MgO, which resisted dissolution, counterbalanced the negative effects of defective barrier and increased porosity resulting in a relatively lower rate of the degradation of the corrosion resistance. Thus, the corrosion resistance of all the coatings continuously decreased with time and became similar after prolonged immersion in NaCl solution. Increasing current density, therefore, did not prove to be beneficial for the improvement of the corrosion performance of the PEO coatings. (C) 2016 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

The microstructural evolution in localized shear deformation was investigated in an 8090 Al-Li alloy by split Hopkinson pressure bar (strain rate of approximately 10(3) s(-1)) at ambient temperature and 77 K. The alloy was tested in the peak-, over-, under-, and natural-aged conditions, that provide a wide range of microstructural parameters and mechanical properties. Two types of localized shear bands were distinguished by optical microscopy: the deformed shear band and the white-etching shear band. They form at different stages of deformation during localization. There are critical strains for the occurrence of deformed and white-etching localized shear deformation, at the imposed strain rate. Observations by transmission electron microscopy reveal that the white-etching bands contain fine equiaxed grains; it is proposed that they are the result of recrystallization occurring during localization. The deformed-type bands are observed after testing at 77 K in all heat treatment conditions, but they are not as well defined as those developed at ambient temperature. Cracking often occurs along the localized shear at ambient temperature. The decrement in temperature is favorable for the nucleation, growth and coalescence of the microcracks along the shear bands, inducing fracture.

The microstructures and the characteristics of water-atomized, nitrogen gas-atomized Al powders and ultrasonic argon gas-atomized Al-Li alloy powder were investigated by means of metallography, SEM, Auger electron spectroscopy and X-ray diffraction techniques. Rapidly solidified powders were explosively consolidated into different sized cylinders under various explosive parameters. The explosively consolidated compacts have been tested and analysed for density microhardness, retention of rapidly solidified microstructures, interparticle bonding, fractography and lattice distortion. It is shown that the explosive consolidation technique is an effective method for compacting rapidly solidified powders. The characteristics of surface layers play a very important role in determining the effectiveness of the joints sintered, and the Al-Li alloy explosive compacts present an abnormal softening appearance compared to the original powder.

Pure metal powder mixtures of W and Mg at the desired composition were milled in conventional high-energy ball mill, and amorphous alloy W50Mg50 was obtained after milling for 20 h. The structure evolution of elemental powder mixtures was studied following milling and subsequent high pressure and high temperature treatment. The amorphous alloy transform into a nanocrystalline material below 1050 degreesC at 4.0 GPa. On increasing the temperature, it transforms into a mixture of several new crystal phases under high-pressure condition. It also found that both mechanical alloying and high pressure treatment are the two necessary processes to form the nanocrystalline and the new phases.
