This paper presents results from the first use of neural networks for the real-time feedback control of high temperature plasmas in a Tokamak fusion experiment. The Tokamak is currently the principal experimental device for research into the magnetic confinement approach to controlled fusion. In the Tokamak, hydrogen plasmas, at temperatures of up to 100 Million K, are confined by strong magnetic fields. Accurate control of the position and shape of the plasma boundary requires real-time feedback control of the magnetic field structure on a time-scale of a few tens of microseconds. Software simulations have demonstrated that a neural network approach can give significantly better performance than the linear technique currently used on most Tokamak experiments. The practical application of the neural network approach requires high-speed hardware, for which a fully parallel implementation of the multi-layer perceptron, using a hybrid of digital and analogue technology, has been developed.

Polonium-210 and Lead-210 have been measured in the water column and on suspended particulate matter during the POLARSTERN cruise ARK-XXII/2. The data have been submitted to Pangaea following a Polonium-Lead intercalibration exercise organized by GEOTRACES, where the AWI lab results range within the data standard deviation from 10 participating labs. Polonium-210 and Lead-210 in the ocean can be used to identify the sources and sinks of suspended matter. In seawater, Polonium-210 (210Po) and Lead-210 (210Pb) are produced by stepwise radioactive decay of Uranium-238. 210Po (138 days half life) and 210Pb (22.3 years half life) have high affinities for suspended particles. Those radionuclides are present in dissolved form and adsorbed onto particles. Following adsorption onto particle surfaces, 210Po especially is transported into the interior of cells where it bonds to proteins. In this way, 210Po also accumulates in the food chain. 210Po is therefore considered to be a good tracer for POC, and traces particle export over a timescale of month. 210Pb (22.3 years half life) adsorbs preferably onto structural components of cells, biogenic silica and lithogenic particles, and is therefore a better tracer more rapidly sinking matter. Our goal during ARK XXII/2 was to trace pathways of particulate and dissolved matter leaving the Siberian Shelf. The pathways of particulate and dissolved matter will be followed by the combined use of 210Po and 234Th as a tracer pair (and perhaps 210Pb) for particle flux (Cai, P.; Rutgers van der Loeff, MM (2008) doi:10.1594/PANGAEA.708354). This information gathered from the water column will be complemented with the results of the 210Po-210Pb study in sea ice (Camara-Mor, P, Instituto de Ciencias del Mar-SCIC, Barcelona, Spain) to provide a more thorough picture of particle transport from the shelf to the open sea and from surface to depth.

Network intrusion detection systems are themselves becoming targets of attackers. Alert flood attacks may be used to conceal malicious activity by hiding it among a deluge of false alerts sent by the attacker. Although these types of attacks are very hard to stop completely, our aim is to present techniques that improve alert throughput and capacity to such an extent that the resources required to successfully mount the attack become prohibitive. The key idea presented is to combine a token bucket filter with a realtime correlation algorithm. The proposed algorithm throttles alert output from the IDS when an attack is detected. The attack graph used in the correlation algorithm is used to make sure that alerts crucial to forming strategies are not discarded by throttling.

The perfect mixing model (PMM) is based on parameters derived from the equipment characteristics as well as ore breakage characteristics. Ore characteristics are represented through the appearance function. This function may be determined using JKMRC laboratorial methods or by standard functions. This work describes the model fitting process of the Carajas grinding circuit, using the JKSimMet simulator Two scenarios were used in model fitting exercises: 1) standard appearance function; and 2) appearance fund ion based on testing carried out on samples taken at circuit feed. From this assessment, the appearance function`s influence in the PMM,fit and it`s relation with the breakage rate were determined. The influence of the appearance function on the respective breakage rate distribution was assessed.

A porfíria cutânea tarda (PCT) é uma doença do metabolismo das porfirinas caracterizada por fotossensibilidade intensa, associada a lesões bolhosas cobertas por crosta de difícil cicatrização, cicatrizes atróficas e hipertricose em áreas fotoexpostas assim como alterações da função hepática. A hemocromatose hereditária (HH) é a doença genética autossómica recessiva mais frequente na população. Apresentamos o caso de um doente saudável de 38 anos, referenciado por vesículas na face, superfícies extensoras dos braços e dorso das mãos, associadas com hipertricose na região zigomática e quistos de mília no dorso das mãos. Análises laboratoriais mostraram um aumento dos níveis séricos e urinários das porfirinas, do ferro sérico e ferritina elevada. Um diagnóstico de porfíria cutânea tarda foi inferido com base na apresentação clínica, exame histopatológico e resultados laboratoriais. O estudo genético para as mutações do gene da hemocromatose hereditária revelou um doente heterozigoto composto para as mutações mais comuns: C282Y, H63D. A porfíria cutânea tarda pode ser um importante marcador cutâneo para pacientes com mutações do gene HH. A hemocromatose hereditária, se não tratada pode levar à cirrose hepática e carcinoma hepatocelular. Os sinais cutâneos podem ter um papel fundamental no diagnóstico precoce, evitando complicações futuras e possibilitando o aconselhamento genético e teste genético aos filhos dos doentes afectados.
