McConnell Family Papers – Accession 340

The McConnell Family Papers consist of correspondence, land plots and deeds, Fifth Regiment “E” Company Roll of the South Carolina Volunteers, program pamphlet, journal, family papers, a photograph, and recollections by John Daniel McConnell of his service in the Confederate Army during the American Civil War. All of the material primarily relates to the McConnell family members in North and South Carolina, but also contains some material from families located in other states.

Late preterm births with a gestational age of 340/7-366/7 are physiologically, anatomically and metabolically immature and develop medical complications significantly more frequently, have a high morbidity and an elevated mortality. Consideration of this knowledge will in future require new strategies for obstretric, peripartal and neonatal management options that take into account not only maternal risks and demands but also those of the infant.

[Urinary specific gravity--comparative measurements using reagent strips and refractometer in 340 morning urine samples]

The specific gravity of urine (SG) indicates the number and weight of solute particles in urine; its measurement is helpful in interpreting proteinuria detected by dipstick tests and in monitoring adequate hydration in patients with nephrolithiasis. Four methods for measuring SG or osmolality of urine are currently available (depression of the freezing-point, urometry, refractometry, cation exchange on a reagent strip). Using a recently developed reagent strip, we have measured SG in morning urines of 340 non-selected outpatients and compared the results with SG measurements by refractometry of the same urines. In 86.2% of all urines, a good positive correlation between SG measured by reagent strip and refractometry was noted (r = 0.913, p = 0.0001). In 13.8% of the urines, however, the SG measured by reagent strip deviated by more than +/- 5 from the value obtained by refractometry; in 90% of these urines, glucosuria (reagent strip values too low or too high), proteinuria (values too high), or bacteriuria/leukocyturia (values too low or too high) could be found. In alkaline urine (pH > 7.0), SG values obtained by reagent strip have to be corrected by +5.

Sideband characterization and atmospheric observations with various 340 GHz heterodyne receivers

This paper describes sideband response measurements and atmospheric observations with a double sideband and two Single Sideband (SSB) receiver prototypes developed for the multi-beam limb sounder instrument stratosphere-troposphere exchange and climate monitor radiometer. We first show an advanced Fourier-Transform Spectroscopy (FTS) method for sideband response and spurious signal characterization. We then present sideband response measurements of the different prototype receivers and we compare the results of the SSB receivers with sideband measurements by injecting a continuous wave signal into the upper and lower sidebands. The receivers were integrated into a total-power radiometer and atmospheric observations were carried out. The observed spectra were compared to forward model spectra to conclude on the sideband characteristics of the different receivers. The two sideband characterization methods show a high degree of agreement for both SSB receivers with various local oscillator settings. The measured sideband response was used to correct the forward model simulations. This improves the agreement with the atmospheric observations and explains spectral features caused by an unbalanced sideband response. The FTS method also allows to quantify the influence of spurious harmonic responses of the receiver.

A proteçao jurídica outorgada à mulher vítima de violência doméstica e familiar no Brasil : Aspectos históricos e conceituais da lei N. 11.340 de 2006

A presente pesquisa tem como objetivo examinar as origens da Lei n. 11.340 de 2006 (Lei Maria da Penha), e evidenciar, para tanto, os dados levantados sobre a condiçao jurídica da mulher no Brasil desde a codificaçao do primeiro Código Civil do país (Lei n. 3.071 de 1916) até a atualidade. Pretende-se, também, apresentar os instrumentos utilizados no Brasil para efetivar o diploma legal, ilustrando o quadro coevo de proteçao à mulher vítima de violência doméstica e familiar, com ênfase nas iniciativas e perspectivas de açao. O procedimento metodológico constitui-se de pesquisa bibliográfica e documental, fundada na discussao teórica do vasto acervo levantado. Tem-se por resultados, em primeiro plano, a demonstraçao de que, no Brasil, somente a partir da Constituiçao Federal de 1988 e da Lei n. 11.340 de 2006, os direitos da mulher foram, de fato, reconhecidos, restando, em igual sentido, comprovada, a influência de instrumentos internacionais de proteçao à mulher como norteadores dessa nova prática. E, sob um segundo prisma, pôde-se corroborar, face às inúmeras interpretaçoes suscitadas, a dificuldade de efetiva aplicaçao de algumas das consignaçoes previstas pela Lei Maria da Penha, contudo, comprovou-se a busca por alternativas viáveis para dotar de efetividade aludida legislaçao
