Apsidal motion in 4U 0115+63 and orbital parameters of 2S 1417-624 and V0332+53

Be/X-ray binary pulsars have wide eccentric orbits and hence the angle of periastron of the orbit is very well defined in these sources. The presence of an X-ray pulsar allows for accurate measurements of orbital elements. A Be star usually is a rapidly rotating star and hence will deviate from spherical geometry. The tidal interaction between the neutron star and the Be star will add to the distortion of the Be star and alter its mass distribution. Thus a measurable rate of apsidal motion is expected from these systems. In this paper, we present the first conclusive detection of apsidal motion of the binary 4U 0115+63. We also present new and accurate orbital parameters of the Be/X-ray binaries V0332+53 and 2S 1417-624.

Studies on nonlinear optical materials: structure of diphenylmethyl (Z)-1-(1-methylthio-2-nitrovinyl)tetrahydropyrrole-2-carboxylate

C21H22N2045, M r = 398.5, orthorhombic, P212~21, a = 9.799 (1), b = 11.853 (1), c = 17.316(2)/~, V=2011.4A 3, Z=4, Dm=l.320, Dx=1.314Mgm -3, CuKa, A=1.5418A, Iz= 1.63 ram-1, F(000) = 840.0, T = 293 K, R = 0.055 for 1735 significant reflections. In the 1-methylthio-2- nitrovinyl moiety the C--C bond, 1.368 (7)A, is significantly longer than in ethylene, 1.336 (2)/~. The second harmonic generation (SHG) efficiency of this compound is only 0.25 of the urea standard. The correlation between the molecular packing and SHG is discussed.

Characterization and immune response of a protein produced by a cDNA clone of foot and mouth disease virus, type Asia 1 63/72

A 0.9 kb double stranded cDNA of foot and mouth disease virus (FMDV) Type Asia 1, 63/72 was cloned in an expression vector, pUR222. A protein of 38 kd was produced by the clone which reacted with the antibodies raised against the virus. A 20 kd protein which may be derived from the 38 kd protein contained the antigenic epitopes of the protein VP1 of the virus. Injection of 10-20 micrograms of the partially purified 38 and 20 kd proteins or a lysate of cells containing 240 micrograms of the proteins elicited high titers of FMDV specific antibodies in guinea pigs and cattle respectively. Also, at these concentrations, the proteins protected 5 of 8 guinea pigs and 3 of 8 cattle when challenged with a virulent virus.

Deformation dynamics of SS-316 Between 1023-K TO 1223-K In The Framework of Cottrell-Stokes Law

Kocks' formalism for analysing steady state deformation data for the case where Cottrell-Stokes law is valid is extended to incorporate possible back stresses from solution and/or precipitation hardening, and dependence of pre-exponential factor on the applied stress. A simple graphical procedure for exploiting these equations is demonstrated by analyzing tensile steady state data for a type 316 austentic stainless steel for the temperature range 1023 to 1223 K. In this instance, the computed back stress values turned out to be negative, a physically meaningless result. This shows that for SS 316, deformation in this temperature regime can not be interpreted in terms of a mechanism that obeys Cottrell-Stokes law.

EPR, thermo and photoluminescence properties of ZnO nanopowders

Nanocrystalline ZnO powders have been synthesized by a low temperature solution combustion method. The photoluminescence (PL) spectrum of as-formed and heat treated ZnO shows strong violet (402, 421, 437, 485 nm) and weak green (520 nm) emission peaks respectively. The PL intensities of defect related emission bands decrease with calcinations temperature indicating the decrease of Zn(i) and V(o)(+) caused by the chemisorptions of oxygen. The results are correlated with the electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) studies. Thermoluminescence (TL) glow curves of gamma irradiated ZnO nanoparticles exhibit a single broad glow peak at similar to 343 degrees C. This can be attributed to the recombination of charge carriers released from the surface states associated with oxygen defects, mainly interstitial oxygen ion centers. The trapping parameters of ZnO irradiated with various gamma-doses are calculated using peak shape method. It is observed that the glow peak intensity increases with increase of gamma dose without changing glow curve shape. These two characteristic properties such as TL intensity increases with gamma dose and simple glow curve structure is an indication that the synthesized ZnO nanoparticles might be used as good TL dosimeter for high temperature application. Investigation on the High Vacuum Tribological Characteristics of Surface Treated Nuclear Grade Stainless Steel Type AISI 316 LN at 25 to 500 degrees C

Although some researchers have published friction and wear data of Plasma Nitride (PN) coatings, the tribological behavior of PN/PN Pairs in high vacuum environment has not been published so far In order to bridge this knowledge gap, tribological tests under dry conditions have been conducted on PN/PN Pairs for varying temperatures of 25, 200, 400 and 500 degrees C in high vacuum (1.6 x 10(-4) bar) environment. The PN coatings showed good wear resistance layer on the ring surface. The PN coatings were removed only from the pin surface for all the tests since it contacts at a point. The friction and wear were low at lower temperatures and it eliminated adhesion between the contact surfaces until the coating was completely removed from the pin surface. Growth kinetics and immune response of chimeric foot-and-mouth disease virus serotype `O' produced through replication competent mini genome of serotype Asia 1, 63/72, in BHK cell lines

Regular vaccinations with potent vaccine, in endemic countries and vaccination to live in non-endemic countries are the methods available to control foot-and-mouth disease. Selection of candidate vaccine strain is not only cumbersome but the candidate should grow well for high potency vaccine preparation. Alternative strategy is to generate an infectious cDNA of a cell culture-adapted virus and use the replicon for development of tailor-made vaccines. We produced a chimeric `O' virus in the backbone of Asia 1 and studied its characteristics. The chimeric virus showed high infectivity titre (>10(10)) in BHK 21 cell lines, revealed small plague morphology and there was no cross reactivity with antiserum against Asia I. The virus multiplies rapidly and reaches peak at 12 h post infection. The vaccine prepared with this virus elicited high antibody titres.

Variations in the cyclotron resonant scattering features during 2011 outburst of 4U 0115+63

We study the variations in the Cyclotron Resonant Scattering Feature (CRSF) during 2011 outburst of the high mass X-ray binary 4U 0115+63 using observations performed with Suzaku, RXTE, Swift and INTEGRAL satellites. The wide-band spectral data with low-energy coverage allowed us to characterize the broad-band continuum and detect the CRSFs. We find that the broad-band continuum is adequately described by a combination of a low temperature (kT similar to 0.8 keV) blackbody and a power law with high energy cutoff (E-cut similar to 5.4 keV) without the need for a broad Gaussian at similar to 10 keV as used in some earlier studies. Though winds from the companion can affect the emission from the neutron star at low energies (<3 keV), the blackbody component shows a significant presence in our continuum model. We report evidence for the possible presence of two independent sets of CRSFs with fundamentals at similar to 11 and similar to 15 keV. These two sets of CRSFs could arise from spatially distinct emitting regions. We also find evidence for variations in the line equivalent widths, with the 11 keV CRSF weakening and the 15 keV line strengthening with decreasing luminosity. Finally, we propose that the reason for the earlier observed anticorrelation of line energy with luminosity could be due to modelling of these two independent line sets (similar to 11 and similar to 15 keV) as a single CRSF.

Evaluación de la inclusión de yuca (Manihot esculenta cranz) y suero en la alimentación de cerdos en las etapas de desarrollo y engorde

Se realizó un experimento con 30 cerdos comerciales en las etapas de desarrollo y engorde, con una duración de 120 días (60 días por etapa) con el objetivo de evaluar el efecto de la inclusión de yuca y suero en la alimentación. Sobre consumo, ganancia medía diaria (GMD), conversión alimenticia y utilidad económica. Los cerdos fueron asignados aleatoriamente en 3 grupos de 10 cerdos cada uno, de pesos similares con 60 días de edad, utilizándose un Diseño Completo al Azar (D.C.A. ). Se encontró diferencias significativas (P<0.05) en las categorías de desarrollo y engorde en cuanto a ganancia medía diaria del tratamiento T 1 respecto a los tratamientos T2 y T3. Las raciones experimentales estaban constituidas por: T1 (testigo) concentrado comercial, T2 base (50% maíz., 50% semolina y sal) y suero y el T3 la misma base, suero y yuca. En la etapa de desarrollo los consumos de alimento, ganancia media diaria y conversión alimenticia promedio por cerdo fueron de: 63.48, 189.57 y 218.45 kg; 384.33, 174.33 y 158.33 gramos/día; 2.75, 19.95 y 20.88 para T1, T2 y T3 respectivamente. En la etapa de engorde, los consumos de alimento, ganancia media diaria y conversión alimenticia promedia por cerdo fueron de: 164.98, 343.44 y 355.87 kg; 822.03, 398.65 y 328.80 gramos/día; 3.34, 14.36 y 18.03. El análisis económico evidencia que las mejores utilidades se obtuvieron con el T2 en la etapa de engorde con C$90.61/cerdo. Se concluye que se puede suministrar raciones para la alimentación de cerdos en engorde con subproductos lácteos y agrícolas con el fin de disminuir los costos por alimento.
