A series of new composite proton exchange membranes for direct methanol fuel cells (DMFCs) based on poly (vinyl alcohol) (PVA), phosphotungstic acid (PWA) and silica were prepared. The highest proton conductivity (a) of these membranes is 0.017 S/cm at ambient temperature. The methanol permeability (D) of these composite membranes ranges from 10(-7) to 10(-8) cm(2)/S. From the ratios of sigma/D, it was found that the optimal weight composition of the PVA/PWA/SiO2 membrane is PVA/PWA/SiO2=0.40:0.40:0.20 wt. Infrared (IR) spectrographic measurements indicate that the Keggin structure characteristics of the PW12O403- anion is present in the composite membranes. Cyclic voltammetry shows that the electrochemical stability window of the complex membrane is from -0.5 to 1.5 V vs. Ag/AgCl electrode. The results of differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) show that silica can improve the thermal stability of the complexes and the single Tg of the membrane indicates that the membrane is homogeneous. The complexes behave as X-ray amorphous.

Organically modified silica xerogels (OMSX) and Eu3+ (Tb3+)-doped OMSX were prepared by the reaction of (3-aminopropyl) triethoxysilane (APS) with 3-isocyanatepropyltriethoxysilane (ICPTES) followed by the subsequent hydrolysis and condensation in the presence of Eu3+ (Tb3+) via sol-gel method, which were characterized by FT-IR, XRD, fluorescence excitation and emission spectra. The as-formed OMSX shows a strong blue emission with the maximum excitation and emission wavelength at 351 and 420 nm, respectively. Due to the spectral overlap between the emission band of OMSX and f-f absorption lines of Eu3+ and Tb3+ in the UV-blue region, an energy transfer was observed from OMSX host to Eu3+ and Tb3+ in OMSX/Eu3+ and OMSX/Tb3+, respectively. Excitation at 350-360 nm resulted in a very weak emission around 420 nm from OMSX host and strong emission of Eu3+ and Tb3+ in OMSX/Eu3+ and OMSX/Tb3+, respectively. The emission spectra of Eu3+ and Tb3+ consist of D-5(0)-F-7(J) (J = 0, 1, 2, 3, 4) and D-5(4)-F-7(J) (J = 6, 5, 4, 3), respectively. Furthermore, the predicted structure of OMSX/Eu3+ and OMSX/Tb3+ is presented.

Y2O3:Sm and Gd2O3:Sm powder phosphors were prepared by carbonate coprecipitation method. The purified crystalline phases of Y2O3:Sm and Gd2O3:SM were obtained at 600degreesC, and the crystallinity increases with increase in annealing temperature. Both samples contain aggregated phosphor particles. An energy transfer (ET) from Y2O3 and Gd2O3 hosts to sm(3+) has been observed, and the ET efficiency in the latter is higher than that in the former because an energy migration process like Gd3+-(Gd3+)(n)-Sm3+ has occurred in the latter. Furthermore, an upconversion luminescence from the (4)G(5/2) level of Sm3+ has been observed in both Y2O3 and Gd2O3 under the excitation of 936 nm infrared, whose mechanisms are proposed. Both the up and downconversion emission intensities of Sm3+ in Gd2O3 are stronger than those in Y2O3.

The extraction kinetics of ytterbium with sec-nonylphenoxy acetic acid (CA-100) in heptane have been investigated using a constant interfacial area cell with laminar flow. The influence of stirring speed and temperature on the rate indicated that the extraction rate was controlled by the experiment conditions. The plot of interfacial area on the rate showed a linear relationship. This fact together with the low solubility in water and strong surface activity of CA-100 at heptane-water interfaces made the interface the most probable locale for the chemical reactions. The influences of extractant concentration and hydrogen ion concentration on the extraction rate were investigated, and the forward and reverse rate equations for the ytterbium extraction with CA-100 were also obtained. Based on the experimental data, the apparent forward extraction rate constant was calculated. Interfacial reaction models were proposed that agree well with the rate equations obtained from experimental data.

Separation of scandium(III), yttrium(III) and lanthanum(III) was performed by high-performance centrifugal partition chromatography (HPCPC) employing the stationary phase of S-octyl phenyloxy acetic acid (CA-12). The liquid-liquid extraction behavior of CA-12 for Sc(III), Y(III) and La(III), the acidity of aqueous phase, and the operation conditions of HPCPC were examined. The retention volume (V-R) increased with the order of Y(III), La(III) and Sc(III) accompanied with the elution of the mobile phase in different pH, which is lowered from 4.6 to 2.1.

Radiculopathy, a painful neuroinflammation that can accompany intervertebral disc herniation, is associated with locally increased levels of the pro-inflammatory cytokine tumor necrosis factor alpha (TNFα). Systemic administration of TNF antagonists for radiculopathy in the clinic has shown mixed results, and there is growing interest in the local delivery of anti-inflammatory drugs to treat this pathology as well as similar inflammatory events of peripheral nerve injury. Curcumin, a known antagonist of TNFα in multiple cell types and tissues, was chemically modified and conjugated to a thermally responsive elastin-like polypeptide (ELP) to create an injectable depot for sustained, local delivery of curcumin to treat neuroinflammation. ELPs are biopolymers capable of thermally-triggered in situ depot formation that have been successfully employed as drug carriers and biomaterials in several applications. ELP-curcumin conjugates were shown to display high drug loading, rapidly release curcumin in vitro via degradable carbamate bonds, and retain in vitro bioactivity against TNFα-induced cytotoxicity and monocyte activation with IC50 only two-fold higher than curcumin. When injected proximal to the sciatic nerve in mice via intramuscular (i.m.) injection, ELP-curcumin conjugates underwent a thermally triggered soluble-insoluble phase transition, leading to in situ formation of a depot that released curcumin over 4days post-injection and decreased plasma AUC 7-fold.
