Background: Anti-lipoprotein lipase antibodies have been described in rare cases of patients with hypertriglyceridemia. However, no systematic study evaluating these antibodies in patients with this lipid abnormality has been undertaken. Objectives: To analyze the correlation of anti-lipoprotein lipase (anti-LPL) antibodies with other laboratory findings in patients with hypertriglyceridemia but no autoimmune disease. Methods: We evaluated 44 hypertriglyceridemic patients without autoimmune disease. Clinical and laboratory evaluations included analyses of comorbidities, fasting lipid profile and anti-LPL antibodies. Results: Mean patient age was 55 +/- 10 years; 46% of the patients were female and 64% were Caucasian. The mean disease duration was 94.4 months and mean body mass index 28.7 +/- 3.6 kg/m(2); 34.0% were diabetic, 25.0% were obese, 72.7% had systemic arterial hypertension, 75% were sedentary, 15.9% were smokers, 56.8% had a family history of dyslipidemia, 45.5% had a family history of coronary insufficiency, 20.5% had acute myocardial infarction, 9.0% had undergone revascularization and 11.0% angioplasty, 79.5% were being treated with statins and 43.2% were taking fibrates. Median triglyceride levels were 254 mg/dl (range 100-3781 mg/dl), and total cholesterol level was 233 +/- 111 mg/dl. High-density lipoprotein was 42.6 +/- 15.4 mg/dl, low-density lipoprotein 110.7 +/- 42.4 mg/dl and very low-density lipoprotein 48 +/- 15 mg/dl. Anti-LPL antibodies were identified in 2 patients (4.5%), both of whom had a family history of dyslipidemia, coronary insufficiency and acute myocardial infarction; one had undergone myocardial revascularization and percutaneous transluminal coronary angioplasty, and both were using fibrates and had normal triglyceride levels. Conclusions: Our findings demonstrate a correlation between the immune response and dyslipoproteinemia in hypertriglyceridemic patients, suggesting that autoimmune disease contributes to the dyslipidemia process.

Periodontal diseases are infectious diseases, in which periodontopathogens trigger chronic inflammatory and immune responses that lead to tissue destruction. It occurs through the generation of metalloproteinases and the activation of bone resorption mechanisms. Anti-inflammatory cytokines such as IL-10 seem to attenuate periodontal tissue destruction through the induction of tissue inhibitors of metalloproteinases (TIMPs) and the inhibitor of osteoclastogenesis osteoprotegerin (OPG). A high individual variation in levels of IL-10 mRNA is verified in periodontitis patients, which is possibly determined by genetic polymorphisms. In this study, the IL-10 promoter -592C/A single nucleotide polymorphism ( SNP), which is associated with a decrease in IL-10 production, was analyzed by RFLP in 116 chronic periodontitis (CP) patients and 173 control (C) subjects, and the IL-10, TIMPs, and OPG mRNA expression levels in diseased gingival tissues were determined by real-time-PCR. The IL-10-592 SNP CA (P=0.0012/OR=2.4/CI:1.4-4.1), AA (P=0.0458/OR=2.3/CI:1.1-4.9), and CA+AA (P=0.0006/OR=2.4/CI: 1.4-3.4) genotypes and the allele A (P=0.0036/OR=1.7/CI:1.2-2.4) were found to be significantly more prevalent in the CP group when compared with control subjects. Both CA and AA genotypes were associated with lower levels of IL-10, TIMP-3, and OPG mRNA expression in diseased periodontal tissues and were also associated with disease severity as mean pocket depth. Taken together, the results presented here demonstrate that IL10-592 SNP is functional in CP, being associated with lower levels of IL-10 mRNA expression, which is supposed to consequently decrease the expression of the downstream genes TIMP-3 and OPG, and influence periodontal disease outcome. Discusses the formation of urban apparatus that have characterized promote interaction, connection, inclusion and learning within the new paradigm of knowledge, which corresponds to the process of involvement/ knowledge propagation between space and urban space, caused by various combinations. Rescues the importance of physical space in the contemporary city before the increasing spread of cyberspace as one that many theorists seem to be the future of humanity. It also discusses the importance of knowledge in various fields such as Philosophy, Sociology, Education, and especially the Architecture and Urbanism, highlighting the need to think about the city according to this status of knowledge. Shows how the apparatus are found in urban public policy agenda. In this context, used as a model the polygonal 1 of the city of Vitória, consisting of eight communities that call themselves Território do Bem, focusing on how ownership and endogenous production of spaces contribute to the formation of urban apparatus. Also shows the performance of the city of Vitória through the Multiyear Plan 2010/2013, pointing out the actions and the programs that contribute to the formation of urban apparatus. The results show that the apparatus are tools of participatory urban management and city planning, contributing to the process of autonomy and social emancipation

Four cationic ruthenium(II) complexes with the formula [Ru(eta(5)-C5H5)(PPh3)(2)](+), with L = 5-phenyl-1H-tetrazole (TzH) 1, imidazole (ImH) 2, benzo[1,2-b; 4,3-b'] dithio-phen-2-carbonitrile (Bzt) 3, and [5-(2-thiophen-2-yl)-vinyl]-thiophene-2-carbonitrile] (Tvt) 4 were prepared and characterized in view to evaluate their potentialities as antitumor agents. Studies by Circular Dichroism indicated changes in the secondary structure of ct-DNA. Changes in the tertiary structure of pBR322 plasmid DNA were also observed in gel electrophoresis experiment and the images obtained by atomic force microscopy (AFM) suggest strong interaction with pBR322 plasmid DNA; the observed decreasing of the viscosity with time indicates that the complexes do not intercalate between DNA base pairs. Compounds 1, 2, and 3 showed much higher cytotoxicity than the cisplatin against human leukaemia cancer cells (HL-60 cells).

Seismic ambient noise tomography is applied to central and southern Mozambique, located in the tip of the East African Rift (EAR). The deployment of MOZART seismic network, with a total of 30 broad-band stations continuously recording for 26 months, allowed us to carry out the first tomographic study of the crust under this region, which until now remained largely unexplored at this scale. From cross-correlations extracted from coherent noise we obtained Rayleigh wave group velocity dispersion curves for the period range 5–40 s. These dispersion relations were inverted to produce group velocity maps, and 1-D shear wave velocity profiles at selected points. High group velocities are observed at all periods on the eastern edge of the Kaapvaal and Zimbabwe cratons, in agreement with the findings of previous studies. Further east, a pronounced slow anomaly is observed in central and southern Mozambique, where the rifting between southern Africa and Antarctica created a passive margin in the Mesozoic, and further rifting is currently happening as a result of the southward propagation of the EAR. In this study, we also addressed the question concerning the nature of the crust (continental versus oceanic) in the Mozambique Coastal Plains (MCP), still in debate. Our data do not support previous suggestions that the MCP are floored by oceanic crust since a shallow Moho could not be detected, and we discuss an alternative explanation for its ocean-like magnetic signature. Our velocity maps suggest that the crystalline basement of the Zimbabwe craton may extend further east well into Mozambique underneath the sediment cover, contrary to what is usually assumed, while further south the Kaapval craton passes into slow rifted crust at the Lebombo monocline as expected. The sharp passage from fast crust to slow crust on the northern part of the study area coincides with the seismically active NNE-SSW Urema rift, while further south the Mazenga graben adopts an N-S direction parallel to the eastern limit of the Kaapvaal craton. We conclude that these two extensional structures herald the southward continuation of the EAR, and infer a structural control of the transition between the two types of crust on the ongoing deformation.
