This paper proposes the use of the q-Gaussian mutation with self-adaptation of the shape of the mutation distribution in evolutionary algorithms. The shape of the q-Gaussian mutation distribution is controlled by a real parameter q. In the proposed method, the real parameter q of the q-Gaussian mutation is encoded in the chromosome of individuals and hence is allowed to evolve during the evolutionary process. In order to test the new mutation operator, evolution strategy and evolutionary programming algorithms with self-adapted q-Gaussian mutation generated from anisotropic and isotropic distributions are presented. The theoretical analysis of the q-Gaussian mutation is also provided. In the experimental study, the q-Gaussian mutation is compared to Gaussian and Cauchy mutations in the optimization of a set of test functions. Experimental results show the efficiency of the proposed method of self-adapting the mutation distribution in evolutionary algorithms.

Cellular Prion Protein (PrP(C)) is a cell surface protein highly expressed in the nervous system, and to a lesser extent in other tissues. PrP(C) binds to the extracellular matrix laminin and vitronectin, to mediate cell adhesion and differentiation. Herein, we investigate how PrP(C) expression modulates the aggressiveness of transformed cells. Mesenchymal embryonic cells (MEC) from wildtype (Prnp(+/+)) and PrP(C)-null (Prnp(0/0)) mice were immortalized and transformed by co-expression of ras and myc. These cells presented similar growth rates and tumor formation in vivo. When injected in the tail vein, PrnP(0/0)raS/myc cells exhibited increased lung colonization compared with Prnp(+/+)ras/myc cells. Additionally, Prnp(0/0)ras/myc cells form more aggregates with blood components than Prnp(+/+)ras/myc cells, facilitating the arrest of Prnp(0/0)ras/myc cells in the lung vasculature. Integrin alpha(v)beta(3) is more expressed and activated in MEC and in transformed Prnp(0/0) cells than in the respective Prnp(+/+) cells. The blocking of integrin alpha(v)beta(3) by RGD peptide reduces lung colonization in transformed Prnp(0/0) cells to similar levels of those presented by transformed Prnp(+/+) cells. Our data indicate that PrP(C) negatively modulates the expression and activation of integrin alpha(v)beta(3) resulting in a more aggressive phenotype. These results indicate that PrP(C) may have main implications in modulating metastasis formation. (C) 2009 UICC

Neural phase signaling has gained attention as a putative coding mechanism through which the brain binds the activity of neurons across distributed brain areas to generate thoughts, percepts, and behaviors. Neural phase signaling has been shown to play a role in various cognitive processes, and it has been suggested that altered phase signaling may play a role in mediating the cognitive deficits observed across neuropsychiatric illness. Here, we investigated neural phase signaling in two mouse models of cognitive dysfunction: mice with genetically induced hyperdopaminergia [dopamine transporter knock-out (DAT-KO) mice] and mice with genetically induced NMDA receptor hypofunction [NMDA receptor subunit-1 knockdown (NR1-KD) mice]. Cognitive function in these mice was assessed using a radial-arm maze task, and local field potentials were recorded from dorsal hippocampus and prefrontal cortex as DAT-KO mice, NR1-KD mice, and their littermate controls engaged in behavioral exploration. Our results demonstrate that both DAT-KO and NR1-KD mice display deficits in spatial cognitive performance. Moreover, we show that persistent hyperdopaminergia alters interstructural phase signaling, whereas NMDA receptor hypofunction alters interstructural and intrastructural phase signaling. These results demonstrate that dopamine and NMDA receptor dependent glutamate signaling play a critical role in coordinating neural phase signaling, and encourage further studies to investigate the role that deficits in phase signaling play in mediating cognitive dysfunction.

Background -Schistosomiasis is a highly prevalent disease with >200 million infected people. Pulmonary hypertension is one of the pulmonary manifestations in this disease, particularly in its hepatosplenic presentation. The aim of this study was to determine the prevalence of pulmonary hypertension in schistosomiasis patients with the hepatosplenic form of the disease. Methods and Results -All patients with hepatosplenic schistosomiasis followed up at the gastroenterology department of our university hospital underwent echocardiographic evaluation to search for pulmonary hypertension. Patients presenting with systolic pulmonary artery pressure >40 mm Hg were further evaluated through right heart catheterization. Our study showed an 18.5% prevalence of patients with elevated systolic pulmonary artery pressure at echocardiography. Invasive hemodynamics confirmed the presence of pulmonary hypertension in 7.7% (95% confidence interval, 3.3 to 16.7) of patients, with a prevalence of precapillary (arterial) pulmonary hypertension of 4.6% (95% confidence interval, 1.5 to 12.7). Conclusions -Our study reinforces the role of echocardiography as a screening tool in the investigation of pulmonary hypertension, together with the need for invasive monitoring for a proper diagnosis. We conclude that hepatosplenic schistosomiasis may account for one of the most prevalent forms of pulmonary hypertension worldwide, justifying the development of further studies to evaluate the effect of specific pulmonary hypertension treatment in this particular form of the disease. Background: Understanding how clinical variables affect stress distribution facilitates optimal prosthesis design and fabrication and may lead to a decrease in mechanical failures as well as improve implant longevity. Purpose: In this study, the many clinical variations present in implant-supported prosthesis were analyzed by 3-D finite element method. Materials and Method: A geometrical model representing the anterior segment of a human mandible treated with 5 implants supporting a framework was created to perform the tests. The variables introduced in the computer model were cantilever length, elastic modulus of cancellous bone, abutment length, implant length, and framework alloy (AgPd or CoCr). The computer was programmed with physical properties of the materials as derived from the literature, and a 100N vertical load was used to simulate the occlusal force. Images with the fringes of stress were obtained and the maximum stress at each site was plotted in graphs for comparison. Results: Stresses clustered at the elements closest to the loading point. Stress increase was found to be proportional to the increase in cantilever length and inversely proportional to the increase in the elastic modulus of cancellous bone. Increasing the abutment length resulted in a decrease of stress on implants and framework. Stress decrease could not be demonstrated with implants longer than 13 mm. A stiffer framework may allow better stress distribution. Conclusion: The relative physical properties of the many materials involved in an implant-supported prosthesis system affect the way stresses are distributed.

Purpose: Chipping within veneering porcelain has resulted in high clinical failure rates for implant-supported zirconia (yttria-tetragonal zirconia polycrystals [Y-TZP]) bridges. This study evaluated the reliability and failure modes of mouth-motion step-stress fatigued implant-supported Y-TZP versus palladium-silver alloy (PdAg) three-unit bridges. Materials and Methods: Implant-abutment replicas were embedded in polymethylmethacrylate resin. Y-TZP and PdAg frameworks, of similar design (n = 21 each), were fabricated, veneered, cemented (n = 3 each), and Hertzian contact-tested to obtain ultimate failure load. In each framework group, 18 specimens were distributed across three step-stress profiles and mouth-motion cyclically loaded according to the profile on the lingual slope of the buccal cusp of the pontic. Results: PdAg failures included competing flexural cracking at abutment and/or connector area and chipping, whereas Y-TZP presented predominantly cohesive failure within veneering porcelain. Including all failure modes, the reliability (two-sided at 90% confidence intervals) for a ""mission"" of 50,000 and 100,000 cycles at 300 N load was determined (Alta Pro, Reliasoft, Tucson, AZ, USA). No difference in reliability was observed between groups for a mission of 50,000. Reliability remained unchanged for a mission of 100,000 for PdAg, but significantly decreased for Y-TZP. Conclusions: Higher reliability was found for PdAg for a mission of 100,000 cycles at 300 N. Failure modes differed between materials.

O historiador do teatro medieval francês.
