Within a dipping sequence of middle Cretaceous to Eocene sediments on Broken Ridge, opal-A, opal-CT, and quartz occur as minor constituents in carbonate and ash-rich sediments. Biogenic opal-A is mainly derived from diatoms and radiolarians. Opal-A and almost all siliceous microfossils disappear within a narrow (<20-m-thick) transition zone below which authigenic opal-CT and quartz are present. These latter silica polymorphs occur together within a 750-m-thick interval, but the ratio of quartz/opal-CT increases with increasing age and depth within the pre-rift sediment sequence. The boundary between opal-A- and opal-CT-bearing sediments is also a physical boundary at which density, P-wave velocity, and acoustic impedance change. This physical transition is probably caused by infilling of pore space by opal-CT lepispheres.

Core samples taken during Leg 121 drilling aboard the JOIDES Resolution in the central Indian Ocean were analyzed for their low-molecular-weight hydrocarbon contents. Forty-three samples from the Broken Ridge and 39 samples from the Ninetyeast Ridge drill sites, deep-frozen on board immediately after recovery, were studied by a dynamic headspace technique (hydrogen-stripping/thermovaporization). Light hydrocarbons (saturated and olefinic) with two to four carbon atoms, and toluene as a selected aromatic compound, were identified. Total C2-C4 saturated hydrocarbon yields vary considerably from virtually zero in a Paleogene calcareous ooze from Hole 757B to nearly 600 nanogram/gram of dry-weight sediment (parts per billion) in a Cretaceous claystone from Hole 758A. An increase of light-hydrocarbon yields with depth, and hence with sediment temperature, was observed from Hole 758A samples down to a depth of about 500 meters below seafloor. Despite extreme data scatter due to lithological changes over this depth interval, this increased yield indicates the onset of temperature-controlled hydrocarbon formation reactions. Toluene contents are also extremely variable (generally between 10 and 100 ppb) and reach more than 300 ppb in two samples of tuffaceous lithology (Sections 121-755A-17R-4 and 121-758A-48R-4). As for the saturated hydrocarbons, there was also an increase of toluene yields with increasing depth in Hole 758A.

The Toba lake event, the Australasian microtektite event, and the Cretaceous/Paleogene boundary were analyzed on the basis of foraminifers, carbonate content, trace elements, and spherules (microtektites). The Toba ash event, recovered in Hole 758C, may have had minor influences on the foraminiferal populations. The Australasian tektite event has probably some influence on foraminiferal ecology, because the larger specimens become scarce just above the microtektite layer. Microtektites recovered from Hole 758B closely resemble spherules recovered from several Cretaceous/Paleogene boundary localities in North America. The Cretaceous/Paleogene spherules, however, are usually larger and are completely altered to goyazite in the terrestrial environment and to smectite in a marine environment. The Cretaceous/Paleogene boundary of Hole 752B does not show obvious anomalous trace-element concentrations, and iridium concentrations are below our detection limits. The trace-element pattern is dominated by the alternation of chalk with volcanic ash layers above the Cretaceous/Paleogene boundary.

In the piscicide laboratory of GosNIORKh over a series of years was carried out the ichthyological evaluation of different agricultural pesticides, used both in our country and abroad. In all more than 300 different chemical substances were tested. Here, it was established that around 10% of them possessed high ichthyotoxic properties. Experiments were conducted under laboratory conditions on aquarium fish in groups, and also on representatives of different species of lake ichthyofauna. The basic criterion of evaluation of toxicity was the death of experimental fish during 120 hours. This short paper summarises the findings of this reasearch and offers a table presenting acute toxicity of pesticides for fish.
