Owing to the increased customer demands for make-to-order products and smaller product life-cycles, today assembly lines are designed to ensure a quick switch-over from one product model to another for companies' survival in market place. The complexity associated with the decisions pertaining to the type of training and number of workers and their exposition to the different tasks especially in the current era of customized production is a serious problem that the managers and the HRD gurus are facing in industry. This paper aims to determine the amount of cross-training and dynamic deployment policy caused by workforce flexibility for a make-to-order assembly. The aforementioned issues have been dealt with by adopting the concept of evolutionary fuzzy system because of the linguistic nature of the attributes associated with product variety and task complexity. A fuzzy system-based methodology is proposed to determine the amount of cross-training and dynamic deployment policy. The proposed methodology is tested on 10 sample products of varying complexities and the results obtained are in line with the conclusions drawn by previous researchers.

We explore the salient features of the `Kitaev ladder', a two-legged ladder version of the spin-1/2 Kitaev model on a honeycomb lattice, by mapping it to a one-dimensional fermionic p-wave superconducting system. We examine the connections between spin phases and topologically non-trivial phases of non-interacting fermionic systems, demonstrating the equivalence between the spontaneous breaking of global Z(2) symmetry in spin systems and the existence of isolated Majorana modes. In the Kitaev ladder, we investigate topological properties of the system in different sectors characterized by the presence or absence of a vortex in each plaquette of the ladder. We show that vortex patterns can yield a rich parameter space for tuning into topologically non-trivial phases. We introduce and employ a new topological invariant for explicitly determining the presence of zero energy Majorana modes at the boundaries of such phases. Finally, we discuss dynamic quenching between topologically non-trivial phases in the Kitaev ladder and, in particular, the post-quench dynamics governed by tuning through a quantum critical point.

In-situ transmission electron microscopy (TEM) has developed rapidly over the last decade. In particular, with the inclusion of scanning probes in TEM holders, allows both mechanical and electrical testing to be performed whilst simultaneously imaging the microstructure at high resolution. In-situ TEM nanoindentation and tensile experiments require only an axial displacement perpendicular to the test surface. However, here, through the development of a novel in-situ TEM triboprobe, other surface characterisation experiments are now possible, with the introduction of a fully programmable 3D positioning system. Programmable lateral displacement control allows scratch tests to be performed at high resolution with simultaneous imaging of the changing microstructure. With the addition of repeated cyclic movements, both nanoscale fatigue and friction experiments can also now be performed. We demonstrate a range of movement profiles for a variety of applications, in particular, lateral sliding wear. The developed NanoLAB TEM triboprobe also includes a new closed loop vision control system for intuitive control during positioning and alignment. It includes an automated online calibration to ensure that the fine piezotube is controlled accurately throughout any type of test. Both the 3D programmability and the closed loop vision feedback system are demonstrated here.

In this paper, we investigate the effect of vacuum sealing the backside cavity of a Capacitive Micromachined Ultrasonic Transducer (CMUT). The presence or absence of air inside the cavity has a marked effect upon the system parameters, such as the natural frequency, damping, and the pull-in voltage. The presence of vacuum inside the cavity of the device causes a reduction in the effective gap height which leads to a reduction in the pull-in voltage. We carry out ANSYS simulations to quantify this reduction. The presence of vacuum inside the cavity of the device causes stress stiffening of the membrane, which changes the natural frequency of the device. A prestressed modal analysis is carried out to determine the change in natural frequency due to stress stiffening. The equivalent circuit method is used to evaluate the performance of the device in the receiver mode. The lumped parameters of the device are obtained and an equivalent circuit model of the device is constructed to determine the open circuit receiving sensitivity of the device. The effect of air in the cavity is included by incorporating an equivalent compliance and an equivalent resistance in the equivalent circuit.

A dynamic model of the COREX melter gasifier is developed to study the transient behavior of the furnace. The effect of pulse disturbance and step disturbance on the process performance has been studied. This study shows that the effect of pulse disturbance decays asymptotically. The step change brings the system to a new steady state after a delay of about 5 hours. The dynamic behavior of the melter gasifier with respect to a shutdown/blow-on condition and the effect of tapping are also studied. The results show that the time response of the melter gasifier is much less than that of a blast furnace.

This paper describes a dynamic voltage frequency control scheme for a 256 X 64 SRAM block for reducing the energy in active mode and stand-by mode. The DVFM control system monitors the external clock and changes the supply voltage and the body bias so as to achieve a significant reduction in energy. The behavioral model of the proposed DVFM control system algorithm is described and simulated in HDL using delay and energy parameters obtained through SPICE simulation. The frequency range dictated by an external controller is 100 MHz to I GHz. The supply voltage of the complete memory system is varied in steps of 50 mV over the range of 500 mV to IV. The threshold voltage range of operation is plusmn100 mV around the nominal value, achieving 83.4% energy reduction in the active mode and 86.7% in the stand-by mode. This paper also proposes a energy replica that is used in the energy monitor subsystem of the DVFM system.

In the design of °ight control system modeling uncertainties in the form of param-eter variations is one of the major problems. It is even more critical for high performance aircrafts, since such aircrafts are purposefully designed unstable to enhance their performance (especially ma-neuverability). Hence the °ight control system needs to be quite e®ective in both assuring accurate tracking of pilot commands, while simultaneously assuring overall stability of the aircraft. In addi-tion, the control system must also be su±ciently robust to cater for possible parameter variations and inaccuracies . The primary aim of this paper is to carry out a robustness study of a dynamic inversion based nonlinear control design for a high performance aircraft, which has been developed recently [1].
Active Vibration Suppression of One-dimensional Nonlinear Structures Using Optimal Dynamic Inversion

A flexible robot arm can be modeled as an Euler-Bernoulli beam which are infinite degrees of freedom (DOF) system. Proper control is needed to track the desired motion of a robotic arm. The infinite number of DOF of beams are reduced to finite number for controller implementation, which brings in error (due to their distributed nature). Therefore, to represent reality better distributed parameter systems (DPS) should be controlled using the systems partial differential equation (PDE) directly. In this paper, we propose to use a recently developed optimal dynamic inversion technique to design a controller to suppress nonlinear vibration of a beam. The method used in this paper determines control forces directly from the PDE model of the system. The formulation has better practical significance, because it leads to a closed form solution of the controller (hence avoids computational issues).

We study the problem of optimal bandwidth allocation in communication networks. We consider a queueing model with two queues to which traffic from different competing flows arrive. The queue length at the buffers is observed every T instants of time, on the basis of which a decision on the amount of bandwidth to be allocated to each buffer for the next T instants is made. We consider a class of closed-loop feedback policies for the system and use a twotimescale simultaneous perturbation stochastic approximation(SPSA) algorithm to find an optimal policy within the prescribed class. We study the performance of the proposed algorithm on a numerical setting. Our algorithm is found to exhibit good performance.

In this paper, we consider the synthesis of decentralized dynamic compensators for large systems. The eliminant approach is used to obtain sufficient conditions for the existence of proper, stable, decentralized observer-controllers for stabilizing a large system. An illustrative example is given.

Many web sites incorporate dynamic web pages to deliver customized contents to their users. However, dynamic pages result in increased user response times due to their construction overheads. In this paper, we consider mechanisms for reducing these overheads by utilizing the excess capacity with which web servers are typically provisioned. Specifically, we present a caching technique that integrates fragment caching with anticipatory page pre-generation in order to deliver dynamic pages faster during normal operating situations. A feedback mechanism is used to tune the page pre-generation process to match the current system load. The experimental results from a detailed simulation study of our technique indicate that, given a fixed cache budget, page construction speedups of more than fifty percent can be consistently achieved as compared to a pure fragment caching approach.

Interrogation techniques for fiber Bragg grating sensor arrays need particular attention in the case of structural health monitoring applications involving dynamic strain measurement. Typically the performance of the sensing system is dependent on both the sensor type and the interrogation method employed. A novel interrogation system is proposed here that consists of different interrogation units for each sensor in the array, each unit comprising of a circulator, chirped grating and a Mach-Zehnder interferometer. We present an analysis that consists of tracking the spectral changes as the light passes through various elements in the interrogation system. This is expected to help in the optimization of sensor and interrogation elements leading to improved performance of the health monitoring system.

Over the past decade, many powerful data mining techniques have been developed to analyze temporal and sequential data. The time is now fertile for addressing problems of larger scope under the purview of temporal data mining. The fourth SIGKDD workshop on temporal data mining focused on the question: What can we infer about the structure of a complex dynamical system from observed temporal data? The goals of the workshop were to critically evaluate the need in this area by bringing together leading researchers from industry and academia, and to identify promising technologies and methodologies for doing the same. We provide a brief summary of the workshop proceedings and ideas arising out of the discussions.

The importance of air bearing design is growing in engineering. As the trend to precision and ultra precision manufacture gains pace and the drive to higher quality and more reliable products continues, the advantages which can be gained from applying aerostatic bearings to machine tools, instrumentation and test rigs is becoming more apparent. The inlet restrictor design is significant for air bearings because it affects the static and dynamic performance of the air bearing. For instance pocketed orifice bearings give higher load capacity as compared to inherently compensated orifice type bearings, however inherently compensated orifices, also known as laminar flow restrictors are known to give highly stable air bearing systems (less prone to pneumatic hammer) as compared to pocketed orifice air bearing systems. However, they are not commonly used because of the difficulties encountered in manufacturing and assembly of the orifice designs. This paper aims to analyse the static and dynamic characteristics of inherently compensated orifice based flat pad air bearing system. Based on Reynolds equation and mass conservation equation for incompressible flow, the steady state characteristics are studied while the dynamic state characteristics are performed in a similar manner however, using the above equations for compressible flow. Steady state experiments were also performed for a single orifice air bearing and the results are compared to that obtained from theoretical studies. A technique to ease the assembly of orifices with the air bearing plate has also been discussed so as to make the manufacturing of the inherently compensated bearings more commercially viable. Many problems of state estimation in structural dynamics permit a partitioning of system states into nonlinear and conditionally linear substructures. This enables a part of the problem to be solved exactly, using the Kalman filter, and the remainder using Monte Carlo simulations. The present study develops an algorithm that combines sequential importance sampling based particle filtering with Kalman filtering to a fairly general form of process equations and demonstrates the application of a substructuring scheme to problems of hidden state estimation in structures with local nonlinearities, response sensitivity model updating in nonlinear systems, and characterization of residual displacements in instrumented inelastic structures. The paper also theoretically demonstrates that the sampling variance associated with the substructuring scheme used does not exceed the sampling variance corresponding to the Monte Carlo filtering without substructuring.
