In this paper authors report the first demonstration of a diode laser powered Kerr effect device, consisting of a single birefringent fiber, able to phase-shift and switch an optical signal generated by a second laser diode. They have obtained fast, stable phase-shifting of 90° in a single fiber, at a coupled pump power of only 20 mW. Using this phase shift to induce polarization switching with resultant gating, 25% modulation of the diode laser signal has been observed, with a detection limited-rise time of 10ns.

Strong, artificial pinning centres are required in superconducting films of large thickness for power applications in high magnetic fields. One of the methods for the introduction of pinning centres in such films is substrate decoration, i.e., growing nanoscale islands of certain materials on the substrate prior to the deposition of the superconducting film. Two other methods are building up a layered distribution of a second phase and homogeneous incorporation of second phase inclusions from a compositional target. In this paper, we compare the effectiveness of these methods in terms of the type of the self-assembly of nanoparticles. The comparison is made over a large set of YBa2Cu3O7 films of thickness up to 6.6 μm deposited with Au, Ag, Pd, LaNiO3, PrBa2Cu 3O7, YBCO, BaZrO3 and Gd2Ba 4CuWOy nanoparticles. It is found that substrate-decoration self-assembly is able to provide higher critical current in low magnetic field than the incorporation of homogeneous second phase in the sample microstructure. By specific modification of substrate decoration we achieved the self-field critical current per centimetre of width of 896 A/cm at 77.3 K and 1620 A/cm at 65 K in a film of thickness of 4.8 μm. © 2010 IOP Publishing Ltd.

Combustion oscillations in gas turbines can result in serious damage. One method used to predict such oscillations is to analyze the combustor acoustics using a simple linear model. Such a model requires a flame transfer function to describe the response of the heat release to flow perturbations inside the combustor. This paper reports on the application of Planar Laser Induced Fluorescence (PLIF) of OH radicals to analyze the response of a lean premixed flame to oncoming flow perturbations. Both self-excited oscillations and low amplitude forced oscillations at various frequencies are investigated in an atmospheric pressure model combustor rig. In order to visualize fluctuations of local fuel distribution, acetone-PLIF was also applied in non-reacting and acoustically forced flows at oscillation frequencies of 200 Hz and 510 Hz, respectively. OH-PLIF images were acquired over a range of operating parameters. The results presented in this paper originate from data sets acquired at fixed phase angles during the oscillation cycle. Comparative experiments in self excited and forced acoustic oscillations show that the flame and the combustion intensity develop similarly throughout the pressure cycle in both cases. Although the peak fluorescence intensities differ between self excited and the forced instabilities, there is a clear correspondence in the observed frequency and phase information from the two cases. This result encourages a comparison of the OH-PLIF and the acetone-PLIF results. Quantitative measurements of the equivalence ratio in specific areas of the measurement plane offer insight on the complex phenomena coupling acoustic perturbations, i.e. flow velocity fluctuations, to fluctuations in fuel distribution and combustion intensity, ultimately resulting in self excited combustion oscillations.

A promising approach to the fabrication of materials with nanoscale features is the transfer of liquid-crystalline structure to polymers. However, this has not been achieved in systems with full three-dimensional periodicity. Here we demonstrate the fabrication of self-assembled three-dimensional nanostructures by polymer templating blue phase I, a chiral liquid crystal with cubic symmetry. Blue phase I was photopolymerized and the remaining liquid crystal removed to create a porous free-standing cast, which retains the chiral three-dimensional structure of the blue phase, yet contains no chiral additive molecules. The cast may in turn be used as a hard template for the fabrication of new materials. By refilling the cast with an achiral nematic liquid crystal, we created templated blue phases that have unprecedented thermal stability in the range -125 to 125 °C, and that act as both mirrorless lasers and switchable electro-optic devices. Blue-phase templated materials will facilitate advances in device architectures for photonics applications in particular.

In this paper the global flame dynamics of a model annular gas turbine combustor undergoing strong self-excited circumferential instabilities is presented. The combustor consisted of either 12, 15 or 18 turbulent premixed bluff-body flames arranged around an annulus of fixed circumference so that the effect of flame separation distance, S, on the global heat release dynamics could be investigated. Reducing S was found to produce both an increase in the resonant frequency and the limit-cycle amplitudes of pressure and heat release for the same equivalence ratio. The phase-averaged global heat release, obtained from high-speed OH- chemiluminescence imaging from above, showed that these changes are caused by large-scale modifications to the flame structure around the annulus. For the largest S studied (12 flame configuration) the azimuthal instability produced a helical-like global heat release structure for each flame. When S was decreased, large-scale merging or linking between adjacent flames occurred spanning approximately half of the annulus with the peak heat release concentrated at the outer annular wall. The circumferential nature of the instability was evident from both the pressure measurements and the phase-averaged OH- chemiluminescence showing the phase of the heat release on either side of the annulus to be ≈180°apart and spinning in the counter clockwise direction. Both spinning and standing modes were found but only spinning modes are considered in this paper. To the best of the authors knowledge, these are the first experiments to provide a phase-averaged picture of self-excited azimuthal instabilities in a laboratory-scale annular combustor relevant to gas turbines. © 2012 The Combustion Institute. We provide feedback control laws to stabilize formations of multiple, unit speed particles on smooth, convex, and closed curves with definite curvature. As in previous work we exploit an analogy with coupled phase oscillators to provide controls which isolate symmetric particle formations that are invariant to rigid translation of all the particles. In this work, we do not require all particles to be able to communicate; rather we assume that inter-particle communication is limited and can be modeled by a fixed, connected, and undirected graph. Because of their unique spectral properties, the Laplacian matrices of circulant graphs play a key role. The methodology is demonstrated using a superellipse, which is a type of curve that includes circles, ellipses, and rounded rectangles. These results can be used in applications involving multiple autonomous vehicles that travel at constant speed around fixed beacons. ©2006 IEEE.

This paper presents a Lyapunov design for the stabilization of collective motion in a planar kinematic model of N particles moving at constant speed. We derive a control law that achieves asymptotic stability of the splay state formation, characterized by uniform rotation of N evenly spaced particles on a circle. In designing the control law, the particle headings are treated as a system of coupled phase oscillators. The coupling function which exponentially stabilizes the splay state of particle phases is combined with a decentralized beacon control law that stabilizes circular motion of the particles. © 2005 IEEE.

In this paper we describe the time-varying amplitude and its relation to the global heat release rate of self-excited azimuthal instabilities in a simple annular combustor operating under atmospheric conditions. The combustor was modular in construction consisting of either 12, 15 or 18 equally spaced premixed bluff-body flames around a fixed circumference, enabling the effect of large-scale interactions between adjacent flames to be investigated. High-speed OH* chemiluminescence imaged from above the annulus and pressure measurements obtained at multiple locations around the annulus revealed that the limit cycles of the modes are degenerate in so much as they undergo continuous transitions between standing and spinning modes in both clockwise (CW) and anti-clockwise (ACW) directions but with the same resonant frequency. Similar behaviour has been observed in LES simulations which suggests that degenerate modes may be a characteristic feature of self-excited azimuthal instabilities in annular combustion chambers. By modelling the instabilities as two acoustic waves of time-varying amplitude travelling in opposite directions we demonstrate that there is a statistical prevalence for either standing m=1 or spinning m=±1 modes depending on flame spacing, equivalence ratio, and swirl configuration. Phase-averaged OH* chemiluminescence revealed a possible mechanism that drives the direction of the spinning modes under limit-cycle conditions for configurations with uniform swirl. By dividing the annulus into inner and outer annular regions it was found that the spin direction coincided with changes in the spatial distribution of the peak heat release rate relative to the direction of the bulk swirl induced along the annular walls. For standing wave modes it is shown that the globally integrated fluctuations in heat release rate vary in magnitude along the acoustic mode shape with negligible contributions at the pressure nodes and maximum contributions at the pressure anti-nodes. © 2013.

Experimental demonstration of lasing in a broad area twin-contact semiconductor laser which operates as a phase-conjugation (PC) mirror in an external cavity configuration is reported. This allows "self-aligned" and self-pumped spatially nondegenerate four-wave mixing to be achieved without the need for external optical signals. The external cavity laser system is very insensitive to tilt misalignments of the external mirror in the PC regime and exhibits very good mechanical stability. The resonant frequency of the external cavity lies in the GHz range which corresponds to a subnanosecond time response of phase conjugation processes in the semiconductor laser. © 1997 American Institute of Physics.

The RF locking of a self-Q-switching diode laser is shown to reduce the jitter of a 2.48 GHz train of 1 W peak power picosecond pulses to less than 300 fs. By using direct modulation of the loss in the Q-switched laser, direct encoding of data has been achieved at rates in excess of 2 Gbit/s.

Several nanoscale silicon waveguides are phase-mapped using this approach, and the different modes of propagation are obtained via Fourier analysis. The obtained measured results are in good agreement with the effective indexes of the modes calculated by electromagnetic simulations.
