This article presents the analysis of ultra wide band (UWB) filler designed using a symmetrical three parallel coupled line resonator in low temperature co-fired ceramic (LTCC) medium: The ground plane with an aperture incorporated in it improves the coupling. Based on circuit models, the designed UWB filter has been analyzed, and the results have been confirmed by experiments. The filter has been realized with Dupont LTCC tape DuPont 951 (that has dielectric constant of 7.8). Maximum insertion loss of the experimental filter is 1.5 dB. The group variation over the pass band of the filter is within 0.2 us. Dimensions of the experimental LTCC filter are 20 x 10 x 0.72 mm. (C) 2011 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. In this paper, we present an algebraic method to study and design spatial parallel manipulators that demonstrate isotropy in the force and moment distributions. We use the force and moment transformation matrices separately, and derive conditions for their isotropy individually as well as in combination. The isotropy conditions are derived in closed-form in terms of the invariants of the quadratic forms associated with these matrices. The formulation has been applied to a class of Stewart platform manipulators. We obtain multi-parameter families of isotropic manipulator analytically. In addition to computing the isotropic configurations of an existing manipulator,we demonstrate a procedure for designing the manipulator for isotropy at a given configuration.

In this work, one-dimensional flow-acoustic analysis of two basic configurations of air cleaners, (i) Rectangular Axial-Inlet, Axial-Outlet (RAIAO) and (ii) Rectangular Transverse-Inlet, Transverse-Outlet (RTITO), has been presented. This 1-D analytical approach has been verified with the help of 3-D FEM based software. Through subtraction of the acoustic performance of the bare plenum (without filter element) from that of the complete air cleaner box, the solitary performance of the filter element has been evaluated. Part of the present analysis illustrates that the analytical formulation remains effective even with offset positioning of the air pipes from the centre of the cross section of the air cleaner. The 1-D analytical tool computes much faster than its 3-D simulation counterpart. The present analysis not only predicts the acoustical impact of mean flow, but it also depicts the scenario with increased resistance of the filter element. Thus, the proposed 1-D analysis would help in the design of acoustically efficient air cleaners for automotive applications. (C) 2011 Institute of Noise Control Engineering.

Workstation clusters equipped with high performance interconnect having programmable network processors facilitate interesting opportunities to enhance the performance of parallel application run on them. In this paper, we propose schemes where certain application level processing in parallel database query execution is performed on the network processor. We evaluate the performance of TPC-H queries executing on a high end cluster where all tuple processing is done on the host processor, using a timed Petri net model, and find that tuple processing costs on the host processor dominate the execution time. These results are validated using a small cluster. We therefore propose 4 schemes where certain tuple processing activity is offloaded to the network processor. The first 2 schemes offload the tuple splitting activity - computation to identify the node on which to process the tuples, resulting in an execution time speedup of 1.09 relative to the base scheme, but with I/O bus becoming the bottleneck resource. In the 3rd scheme in addition to offloading tuple processing activity, the disk and network interface are combined to avoid the I/O bus bottleneck, which results in speedups up to 1.16, but with high host processor utilization. Our 4th scheme where the network processor also performs apart of join operation along with the host processor, gives a speedup of 1.47 along with balanced system resource utilizations. Further we observe that the proposed schemes perform equally well even in a scaled architecture i.e., when the number of processors is increased from 2 to 64

The present work describes steady and unsteady computation of reacting flow in a Trapped Vortex Combustor. The primary motivation of this study is to develop this concept into a working combustor in modern gas turbines. The present work is an effort towards development of an experimental model test rig for further understanding dynamics of a single cavity trapped vortex combustor. The steady computations with and without combustion have been done for L/D of 0.8, 1 and 1.2; also unsteady non-reacting flow simulation has been done for L/D of 1. Fuel used for the present study is methane and Eddy-Dissipation model has been used for combustion-turbulence interactions. For L/D of 0.8, combustion efficiency is maximum and pattern factor is minimum. Also, primary vortex in the cavity is more stable and symmetric for L/D of 0.8. From unsteady non-reacting flow simulations, it is found that there is no vortex shedding from the cavity but there are oscillations in the span-wise direction of the combustor.
