The matching coefficients for the four-quark operators in NRQCD (NRQED) are calculated at one loop using dimensional regularization for ultraviolet and infrared divergences. The matching for the electromagnetic current follows easily from our results. Both the unequal and equal mass cases are considered. The role played by the Coulomb infrared singularities is explained in detail.

A recurring task in the analysis of mass genome annotation data from high-throughput technologies is the identification of peaks or clusters in a noisy signal profile. Examples of such applications are the definition of promoters on the basis of transcription start site profiles, the mapping of transcription factor binding sites based on ChIP-chip data and the identification of quantitative trait loci (QTL) from whole genome SNP profiles. Input to such an analysis is a set of genome coordinates associated with counts or intensities. The output consists of a discrete number of peaks with respective volumes, extensions and center positions. We have developed for this purpose a flexible one-dimensional clustering tool, called MADAP, which we make available as a web server and as standalone program. A set of parameters enables the user to customize the procedure to a specific problem. The web server, which returns results in textual and graphical form, is useful for small to medium-scale applications, as well as for evaluation and parameter tuning in view of large-scale applications, requiring a local installation. The program written in C++ can be freely downloaded from ftp://ftp.epd.unil.ch/pub/software/unix/madap. The MADAP web server can be accessed at http://www.isrec.isb-sib.ch/madap/.

A semiclassical coupled-wave theory is developed for TE waves in one-dimensional periodic structures. The theory is used to calculate the bandwidths and reflection/transmission characteristics of such structures, as functions of the incident wave frequency. The results are in good agreement with exact numerical simulations for an arbitrary angle of incidence and for any achievable refractive index contrast on a period of the structure.

We evaluated the effectiveness of supplementation with high dose of oral vitamin D3 to correct vitamin D insufficiency. We have shown that one or two oral bolus of 300,000 IU of vitamin D3 can correct vitamin D insufficiency in 50% of patients and that the patients who benefited more from supplementation were those with the lowest baseline levels. INTRODUCTION: Adherence with daily oral supplements of vitamin D3 is suboptimal. We evaluated the effectiveness of a single high dose of oral vitamin D3 (300,000 IU) to correct vitamin D insufficiency in a rheumatologic population. METHODS: Over 1 month, 292 patients had levels of 25-OH vitamin D determined. Results were classified as: deficiency <10 ng/ml, insufficiency ≥10 to 30 ng/ml, and normal ≥30 ng/ml. We added a category using the IOM recommended cut-off of 20 ng/ml. Patients with deficient or normal levels were excluded, as well as patients already supplemented with vitamin D3. Selected patients (141) with vitamin D insufficiency (18.5 ng/ml (10.2-29.1) received a prescription for 300,000 IU of oral vitamin D3 and were asked to return after 3 (M3) and 6 months (M6). Patients still insufficient at M3 received a second prescription for 300,000 IU of oral vitamin D3. Relation between changes in 25-OH vitamin D between M3 and M0 and baseline values were assessed. RESULTS: Patients (124) had a blood test at M3. Two (2%) had deficiency (8.1 ng/ml (7.5-8.7)) and 50 (40%) normal results (36.7 ng/ml (30.5-5.5)). Seventy-two (58%) were insufficient (23.6 ng/ml (13.8-29.8)) and received a second prescription for 300,000 IU of oral vitamin D3. Of the 50/124 patients who had normal results at M3 and did not receive a second prescription, 36 (72%) had a test at M6. Seventeen (47%) had normal results (34.8 ng/ml (30.3-42.8)) and 19 (53%) were insufficient (25.6 ng/ml (15.2-29.9)). Of the 72/124 patients who receive a second prescription, 54 (75%) had a test at M6. Twenty-eight (52%) had insufficiency (23.2 ng/ml (12.8-28.7)) and 26 (48%) had normal results (33.8 ng/ml (30.0-43.7)). At M3, 84% patients achieved a 25-OH vitamin D level >20 ng/ml. The lowest the baseline value, the highest the change after 3 months (negative relation with a correlation coefficient r = -0.3, p = 0.0007). CONCLUSIONS: We have shown that one or two oral bolus of 300,000 IU of vitamin D3 can correct vitamin D insufficiency in 50% of patients.

Through an imaginary change of coordinates, the ordinary Poincar algebra is shown to be a subalgebra of the Galilei one in four space dimensions. Through a subsequent contraction the remaining Lie generators are eliminated in a natural way. An application of these results to connect Galilean and relativistic field equations is discussed.

The genomic era has revealed that the large repertoire of observed animal phenotypes is dependent on changes in the expression patterns of a finite number of genes, which are mediated by a plethora of transcription factors (TFs) with distinct specificities. The dimerization of TFs can also increase the complexity of a genetic regulatory network manifold, by combining a small number of monomers into dimers with distinct functions. Therefore, studying the evolution of these dimerizing TFs is vital for understanding how complexity increased during animal evolution. We focus on the second largest family of dimerizing TFs, the basic-region leucine zipper (bZIP), and infer when it expanded and how bZIP DNA-binding and dimerization functions evolved during the major phases of animal evolution. Specifically, we classify the metazoan bZIPs into 19 families and confirm the ancient nature of at least 13 of these families, predating the split of the cnidaria. We observe fixation of a core dimerization network in the last common ancestor of protostomes-deuterostomes. This was followed by an expansion of the number of proteins in the network, but no major dimerization changes in interaction partners, during the emergence of vertebrates. In conclusion, the bZIPs are an excellent model with which to understand how DNA binding and protein interactions of TFs evolved during animal evolution.

We calculate the chemical potential ¿0 and the effective mass m*/m3 of one 3He impurity in liquid 4He. First a variational wave function including two- and three-particle dynamical correlations is adopted. Triplet correlations bring the computed values of ¿0 very close to the experimental results. The variational estimate of m*/m3 includes also backflow correlations between the 3He atom and the particles in the medium. Different approximations for the three-particle distribution function give almost the same values for m*/m3. The variational approach underestimates m*/m3 by ~10% at all of the considered densities. Correlated-basis perturbation theory is then used to improve the wave function to include backflow around the particles of the medium. The perturbative series built up with one-phonon states only is summed up to infinite order and gives results very close to the variational ones. All the perturbative diagrams with two independent phonons have then been summed to compute m*/m3. Their contribution depends to some extent on the form used for the three-particle distribution function. When the scaling approximation is adopted, a reasonable agreement with the experimental results is achieved.

A generic prediction of inflation is that the thermalized region we inhabit is spatially infinite. Thus, it contains an infinite number of regions of the same size as our observable universe, which we shall denote as O regions. We argue that the number of possible histories which may take place inside of an O region, from the time of recombination up to the present time, is finite. Hence, there are an infinite number of O regions with identical histories up to the present, but which need not be identical in the future. Moreover, all histories which are not forbidden by conservation laws will occur in a finite fraction of all O regions. The ensemble of O regions is reminiscent of the ensemble of universes in the many-world picture of quantum mechanics. An important difference, however, is that other O regions are unquestionably real.

Thermal fluctuations around inhomogeneous nonequilibrium steady states of one-dimensional rigid heat conductors are analyzed in the framework of generalized fluctuating hydrodynamics. The effect of an external source of noise is also considered. External fluctuations come from temperature and position fluctuations of the source. Contributions of each kind of noise to the temperature correlation function are computed and compared through the study of its asymptotic behavior.

We investigate the phase behavior of a single-component system in three dimensions with spherically-symmetric, pairwise-additive, soft-core interactions with an attractive well at a long distance, a repulsive soft-core shoulder at an intermediate distance, and a hard-core repulsion at a short distance, similar to potentials used to describe liquid systems such as colloids, protein solutions, or liquid metals. We showed [Nature (London) 409, 692 (2001)] that, even with no evidence of the density anomaly, the phase diagram has two first-order fluid-fluid phase transitions, one ending in a gas¿low-density-liquid (LDL) critical point, and the other in a gas¿high-density-liquid (HDL) critical point, with a LDL-HDL phase transition at low temperatures. Here we use integral equation calculations to explore the three-parameter space of the soft-core potential and perform molecular dynamics simulations in the interesting region of parameters. For the equilibrium phase diagram, we analyze the structure of the crystal phase and find that, within the considered range of densities, the structure is independent of the density. Then, we analyze in detail the fluid metastable phases and, by explicit thermodynamic calculation in the supercooled phase, we show the absence of the density anomaly. We suggest that this absence is related to the presence of only one stable crystal structure.

In a national study released in 2007 by The Sentencing Project, Iowa tops the nation for imprisoning African Americans at a rate of 13.6 times that of whites. In addition, African Americans in Iowa are much more likely to be unemployed, lacking a high school diploma, and earning less than white Iowans. And African American offenders’ return-to-prison rates are higher than for white offenders.

The mechanisms sustaining high blood pressure in conscious one-kidney, one-clip Goldblatt rats were evaluated with the use of SK&F 64139, a phenylethanolamine N-methyltransferase inhibitor capable of crossing the blood-brain barrier and of captopril, an angiotensin converting enzyme inhibitor. The rats were studied 3 weeks after left renal artery clipping and contralateral nephrectomy. During the developmental phase of hypertension, two groups of rats were maintained on a regular salt (RNa) intake, whereas two other groups were given a low salt (LNa) diet. On the day of the experiment, the base-line mean blood pressure measured in the LNa rats (177.4 +/- 5.2 mm Hg, mean +/- S.E., n = 15) was similar to that measured in the RNa rats (178.7 +/- 5.4 mm Hg, n = 16). SK&F 64139 (12.5 mg p.o.) induced a significantly more pronounced (P less than .001) blood pressure decrease in the RNa rats (-25.6 +/- 3.6 mm Hg, n = 8) than in the LNa rats (-4.3 +/- 3.3 mm Hg, n = 7) during a 90-min observation period. On the other hand, captopril (10 mg p.o.) normalized blood pressure in LNa rats (n = 8), but produced only a 13.4 mm Hg blood pressure drop in RNa rats (n = 8). RNa rats treated with SK&F 64139 were found to have decreased phenylethanolamine N-methyltransferase activity by an average 80% in selected brain stem nuclei when compared with nontreated rats. No significant difference in plasma catecholamine levels was found between the RNa and LNa rats. These results suggest that, in this experimental model of hypertension, the sodium ion might increase the model of hypertension, the sodium ion might increase the vasoconstrictor contribution of the sympathetic system via a centrally mediated neurogenic mechanism while at the same time it decreases the renin-dependency of the high blood pressure.
